US to send 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan
By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago
The Pentagon is preparing to send at least 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan in April to bolster efforts to hold off another expected Taliban offensive in the spring, military officials said Wednesday.
The move represents a shift in Pentagon thinking that has been slowly developing after months of repeated insistence that the U.S. was not inclined to fill the need for as many as 7,500 more troops that commanders have asked for there. Instead, Defense Secretary Robert Gates pressed NATO allies to contribute the extra forces.
Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said Wednesday that a proposal will go before Gates on Friday that would send a ground and air Marine contingent as well as a Marine battalion — together totaling more than 3,000 forces — to southern Afghanistan for a “one-time, seven-month deployment.”
Gates, he said, will want to review the request, and is not likely to make a final decision on Friday.
“He will take it and consider it thoroughly before approving it,” said Morrell. “I just want to get people away from the idea that this is going to be imminently approved by the secretary.”
He said Gates “has some more thinking to do on this matter because it’s a serious allocation of forces.”
Morrell added that Gates’ thinking on the issue has “progressed a bit” over time as it became clear that it was politically untenable for many of the NATO nations to contribute more combat troops to the fight.
“The commanders need more forces there. Our allies are not in the position to provide them. So we are now looking at perhaps carrying a bit of that additional load,” the spokesman said.
Morrell said the move, first reported Wednesday by ABC News, was aimed at beating back “another Taliban offensive” that is expected this spring — as has occurred in previous years.
When Gates was in Afghanistan last month, commanders made it clear they needed the additional forces.
Last year was the most violent since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The number of attacks has surged, including roadside bombings and suicide assaults.
Currently there are about 27,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, including 14,000 with the NATO-led coalition. The other 13,000 U.S. troops are training the Afghan forces and hunting al-Qaida terrorists.
Morrell said that while the Marine ground and air contingent would be put in place to prevent a spring Taliban offensive, the Marine battalion likely would be used to train Afghan forces.
The shift in U.S. thinking on sending more combat forces to Afghanistan has appeared inevitable in recent weeks, based on the political realities in many of the NATO nations.
In meeting after meeting during his Afghanistan visit in early December, Gates heard pleas from both Afghan and U.S. military leaders for up to 7,500 more forces, with about half needed for training.
About a week later, Gates was asked by a reporter after a NATO meeting in Scotland whether the Bush administration was considering sending more troops to Afghanistan, in the event that the shortfalls are not bridged by NATO allies. Gates replied, “Not in the short term.”
But by Dec. 21, Gates acknowledged during a press briefing that the Pentagon would “be looking at the requirement ourselves.”
Bush administration officials pressed NATO allies for months to fill gaps in troops levels in Afghanistan, but many allied governments face public opposition to deeper involvement there.
Gates said at the Scotland meeting that the administration had decided to tone down its appeals to allies, taking into account “political realities” faced by some European governments whose citizens may see less reason to intervene in Afghanistan.
The Bush administration has launched a wide-ranging review of its policy in Afghanistan to ensure that gains made since the radical Islamist Taliban regime was ousted in 2001 are not lost and to bolster Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s nascent government.

Why wasn’t Bill O’Reilly TASERED for using profanity and assaulting an Obama staffer?
Why wasn’t Bill O’Reilly TASERED for using profanity and assaulting an Obama staffer? Larry Simons
Real Truth Online
Tuesday January 9, 2008
Some people get tased for SPEAKING at political events, but Billo SHOVES and shouts profanities at a political event and gets away with it?
Where were the police in New Hampshire on Saturday? Where were the tasers? How is it even possible that a big fat bully like Bill O’Reilly can waltz into a political forum and shove and shout profanities at one of the staff members of a Presidential nominee and nothing happens?
Of course, the Sultan of Spin in his spinning ways lies about the incident. Here is the video clip of O’ Liar LYING about the incident after it happened this past Saturday. Billo says, “so I asked him (the Obama staffer) fairly nicely, you’re blocking our shot sir, you need to move a little bit…so I had to gently remove him from that position”.
Then Brian Wilson asked, “there are reports that there was a scuffle, was there a scuffle?” O’ Liar says, “No, there was no scuffle at all, I just removed him from uh, in front of the camera”. Then Wilson asked, “there are reports there may have been profanities uttered, were there profanities uttered?” Billo says, “Uh, I might have called him an SOB…possible (laughs), but nothing more than that”. Then Loofah boy concluded, “No one is going to block a shot on the O’ Reilly factor…..it is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN”.
Oooooooo. Tough guy.
How do I KNOW the account in the above clip is a lie? An attack by the Daily Kos? Media Matters? Olbermann? Any other “smear merchants”?? NOPE, but from BILLO HIMSELF, as evidenced in THIS CLIP:
Gotta give Mr. Falafel credit for airing the clip that contradicts his OWN account given to Brian Wilson just two days prior. So, we see here that Billo did not “GENTLY remove him from that position”, as we see Billo shoving the staffer yelling, “Don’t block the shot! Don’t block the shot…got it??” The staffer said, “I’m working here”, in which Billo said, “No you’re not! You’re blocking the shot! Get him out of here!” Then Billo points at him and says, “That’s really low class sir!”
So, we clearly see that Billo told the truth on just about….nothing. He can’t even get the facts right when he reports stories about HIMSELF! How do you expect him to get it right on ANY other story?
What I found really interesting is what he said about the guy who was tasered by the police at a John Kerry speech back in September:
BILLO: “He wanted to disrupt the forum, and to me, I think he should be prosecuted.” Later adding, “What about disrupting the peace? You know, this is what…look, the guy goes in there, he’s totally inappropriate in every way…there isn’t one appropriate thing the man did. He wants to disrupt the forum. Security has an obligation not to allow the forum to be disrupted.”
Watch the video:
OK, Billo. YOU disrupted a political forum! Do YOU think you should be prosecuted and tasered??? Hmmm? All the guy did at the John Kerry speech was stand up and speak. YOU, on the other hand, SHOVED a staff member of a Presidential candidate and shouted profanities at him. So, YOU resorted to VIOLENCE, whereas the man tasered did NOT. Why didn’t any cops taser YOU Billo? Hmmmm? Why aren’t YOU arrested? Hmmm? Why aren’t YOU being prosecuted? Hmmm???
Once again, Billo, you do something MUCH worse than someone else, in whom you advocated harsh punishment administered, and you don’t apply the SAME (or greater) punishment to yourself! You’re a hypocritical, lying scumbag!
Well, Billo, although you were able to escape the taser, the arrest and the prosecution, you was not able to escape the ridicule of Olbermann in the latest installment of puppet theater:

THOUGHTS ON THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY: A SPOOKY, THORAZINE PASSIVITY
By Michael A. Hoffman II | January 9, 2008
www.RevisionistHistory.org
The New Hampshire primary, in spite of being a disappointment, has much
to teach.
But if they donated those huge sums because they thought Rep. Paul could
be elected president, then they were deluded. He couldn’t even do well
in New Hampshire, which Buchanan won in 1996, and which has a more
honest voting system than most states, and a population widely regarded
as among the most libertarian in America. If Paul can’t win in New
Hampshire, where else is he likely to prevail?
It is unfortunate that Great White Hope politics occlude the vision of
its proponents. A genuine victory is possible, through education and
community.
The millions that went into Ron Paul’s campaign could have been used to
build “Ron Paul University” instead, with a brick and mortar campus and
degrees in American history, law, economics, journalism and education,
to start. Graduates would take their place in the lower courts, in
business, in the media and as teachers in the high schools and college
classrooms of the U.S.
Next would come the building of a community of like-minded persons. Yes,
it’s slow and decidedly not as “sexy” a process as elections, which
dangle the hope of “our man in the White House.” Every four years that
chimera is tossed at us like cotton candy in front of kids, and we grab
for it. After our candidate loses and our money gets flushed, we go back
to another four years in our cocoon. Is this a picture of victory?

Gods Among Mortals by John Markley
Gods Among Mortals
by John Markley
Exclusive to STR
January 9, 2008
On September 14th of last year, Utah State Trooper John Gardner was caught on tape attacking motorist Jared Massey with a taser because Massey questioned why he was pulled over, refused to sign a speeding ticket, and generally failed to be sufficiently sniveling in the face of Gardner’s authority. The footage ended up on Youtube (see it here), where it helped spark public interest in the case.
Thuggish behavior and brutalization of innocent people by America ‘s increasingly militarized police is, sadly, nothing new or shocking, and a seasoned libertarian should be surprised neither by Gardner ‘s behavior or the fact that he suffered no punishment for his actions. State proposes to take control of home temps (North County Times)
| Wednesday, January 9, 2008 |
||
|
State proposes to take control of home temps California utilities would control the temperature of new homes and commercial buildings in emergencies with a radio-controlled thermostat, under a proposed state update to building energy efficiency standards. Customers could not override the thermostats during “emergency events,” according to the proposal, part of a 236-page revision to building standards. The document is scheduled to be considered by the California Energy Commission, a state agency, on Jan. 30. The description does not provide any exception for health or safety concerns. It also does not define what are “emergency events.” During heat waves, customers crank up the air conditioning, putting severe strains on the state’s power supply. By giving utilities the power to automatically adjust power demand by reducing air conditioning, the hope is that more severe interruptions, such as rolling blackouts, can be avoided. However, both the Utility Consumers Action Network, a consumer rights group, and the Riverside County Chapter of the Building Industry Association said customers should be allowed to override the thermostat. State and utility spokespersons said utilities will provide health and safety exemptions, although that is not specified in the document. Imminent threats of blackouts would qualify as emergency events, they said. Final adoption of the revised standards is scheduled by April 2009. The document, available at http://tinyurl.com/225htc, outlines the mandatory use of Programmable Communicating Thermostats on page 64: “Upon receiving an emergency signal, the PCT shall respond to commands contained in the emergency signal, including changing the set-point by any number of degrees or to a specific temperature set-point. The PCT shall not allow customer changes to thermostat settings during emergency events.” The PCT specifications require them to include a “non-removable Radio Data System device that is compatible with the default statewide DR (Demand Response) communications system, which can be used by utilities to send price and emergency signals.” The mandatory nature of the proposal was described in a Jan. 4 article in the American Thinker, an online political magazine with a conservative bent. The article, which denounced the plan as overly intrusive —- and economically counterproductive —- is at http://tinyurl.com/29q2tp. Michael Shames, UCAN’s executive director, called the directive “a stunner” in an e-mail. “These ‘advanced’ energy technologies have the potential to be used for both good and evil.ÝIt looks like the California Energy Commission wants it both ways … good and evil.” Shames wrote that allowing external control of thermostats can help customers better manage their energy use, which he supports. “However, it is repugnant and entirely unacceptable to mandate that the customer loses control over the device that will be mandatorily placed in their homes,” Shames wrote. Borre Winckel, executive officer of the Riverside building association, said the mandatory aspect of the proposal smacks of “Big Brother” governmental planning. “This is not too different from certain voices we’ve heard from the water world … where if somebody were to use too much water, the water agency can (by) remote control turn your water off,” he said. “What’s there to keep people from deciding you’ve had your lights on too long?” Winckel continued. “This really does go very deep into government control into how we lead our lives.” The thermostat control would be exercised only in cases of need, and is the latest refinement of a 30-year-old building energy conservation program, said Adam Gottlieb, a spokesman for the California Energy Commission. Thanks to efficiency standards, California’s demand for electricity has remained flat since the late 1970s even as its population has doubled, Gottlieb said. Utilities know how to interpret the new mandate, he said, and when to apply it, even though the definitions are not specified in the document. According to Gottlieb, though, the phrase “emergency events” refers to a Stage II event or higher as defined by the California Independent System Operator, which manages the state’s electrical grid. A Stage II event occurs when electricity reserves, or the surplus of supply over demand, fall below 5 percent. A Stage III event takes place when reserves drop below 1.5 percent, and customer power may be shut down involuntarily. “Any emergency event would be a limited-time occurrence to prevent an imminent outage,” Gottlieb said. The terms “Stage II” and “Stage III” are not defined in the document, Gottlieb said. “It’s more a term of art that the utilities are familiar with.” Rachel Laing, a spokeswoman for San Diego Gas & Electric Co., said the proposals are in the early stage of consideration, and explicit exemptions for health and safety would be adopted later. “I think you’re right, that it doesn’t have in this proposal what the exemption criteria would be,” Laing said. “This proposal is the start of the whole long process of several hearings, and those hearings are meant to identify issues just like this one. We expect that the final plan will have exemptions.” Laing said SDG&E notifies those with medical needs beforehand of rolling blackouts. “Their account is flagged, and when we have a rolling blackout, a message is sent out in advance to those folks,” Laing said. – Contact staff writer Bradley J. DEMAND: NH STATE HIGHLY SCRUTINIZED RECOUNT. NOW!!!!!!!!
By Ken | January 9, 2008
Bev Harris, of BlackBoxVoting.org, has verified in Sutton that Ron Paul had 31 votes but the city clerk admits they “accidentally” put 0 (zero) on final tally sheet. That is just one town! *oops*
If Trevor Lyman needs to put up a page to raise the $67K outside of the official campaign office to accomplish this, then let’s do it! Also suspicious is high numbers of votes under the “Other” column, and also that these high numbers occur much more on GOP side than Dem side. Nothing more to say.

Hand-Made Ron Paul Posters & Stickers FOR SALE!
By ArtForTruth | January 9, 2008
Hello fellow Freedom Fighters!
This is very exciting! I’ve never seen such wide and fast-growing support for a politician in my entire life! Together we can get this great man elected and make some dire changes in this country that are long over due.
In a nutshell, I’m a struggling artist who’s made some promo materials for Ron Paul as my primary way of taking action (among other methods). I DO NOT profit off of these items. ALL PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY TO THE RON PAUL CAMPAIGN! So far I’ve been able to sell enough items to donate $75 to the campaign and I would like to give much more.

Vote Fraud CONFIRMED – Paper vs. Electronic Ballots
By greves | January 8, 2008
A Ron Paul fan has put together this wonderful little table that shows precisely what happened in the towns with paper ballots vs. the towns with Diebold Accuvote optical scanner electronic voting machines.
http://ronrox.com/paulstats.php
You can see clearly by looking at the column in red how much the electronic voting machines gave or took away from a candidate. Ron Paul lost 2%+, whereas Giuliani got a 0.5% boost, stealing 4th from Ron Paul. You can also see that Mitt Romney really didn’t have 31%, but something closer to 25%, a throw of 6% in his favor.

Greenville Vote Discrepancy SAME as Sutton
By AnalogDan | January 9, 2008
We have caught Sutton red-handed. However, there are other other tonwships that have been reporting 0 votes, including Greenville, as sourced here:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/county/#val=NHREP9
Moreover, when Sutton had been found out, they quickly added 31 votes, and cited ‘human error.’ What is their excuse for this source, now showing Greenville at 25 votes:

Ron Paul Republicans must run for Senate and House seats!!!
By Ken | January 9, 2008
This means YOU! The supporters of Ron Paul are the people who must take over Congress, whether he becomes President or not. In fact, it could be much easier for us to take over Congress. Those races are not so focussed and not as easily managed and controlled.
Think about it. Let’s assume Ron Paul does not become President. Are YOU willing to represent your district and stand beside Ron Paul in the House of Representatives and co-sponsor his bills and vote with him? If Ron Paul gets elected to the position of President, are YOU willing to be in Congress to be able to help create, sponsor, co-sponsor and pass legislation in support of his and your/our desire to return our nation to the proper Republic of the many sovereign States? It is up to us all to take back our country. Not only by supporting and voting for Ron Paul. WE MUST TAKE OVER CONGRESS!!!

ORGANIZE
By emeraldmorn | January 9, 2008
What we, as the true patriots of America need to do is organize. To combat the voter fraud, all the Ron Paul supporters/voters need to organize and register with a central website ect. We need to find the Paul supporters and have one at each voting station across the whole US for each primary stopping the voters and recording all the ones voting for RP. This would be ideal because then we have PROOF of all that voted instead of just guessing. First, however we should create a website or something for ALL of the RP supporters to register with. I know you can register to volunteer and get connected with other Paul supporters on http://www.ronpaul2008.com, but I think we as the people wronged should be the ones to cry out the greatest instead of Dr. Paul. To avoid room for hungry media fingers that would love to discredit Ron Paul and his campaign, we as the people should organize our own enlistment of Paul supporters separate from RP’s campaign.

The World Is Counting On You!

GO RON PAUL!! I am a Canadian closely watching the 2008 elections and am a huge supporter of Ron Paul and his message. He speaks the truth. As ugly, horrific and unbelievable the facts are, they are true. People of America, it is time to see your leadership for what it is. A corrupt and evil system. And dont get me wrong, it isn’t just America, it is in Canada and Europe and Asia. I am only commenting on America specifically because of the current elections and the fact that this is a critical time in the U.S.A to make a historical change. There is proof of frauding of votes in the Town of Sutton in New Hampshire!! This is top news!! Though I don’t see it on any main news pages. For all of you out there who believe in the electoral system and the right to fairness….how dare you sit back and allow this sort of lying to occur?? Even if you are a Hillary or Obama supporter… you must stand for truth and fairness. The New World Order is coming down hard on the U.S from a thousand different angles. They know that if they can bring the people of the “free” and “democratic” country of the world, down to their knees in compliance and submission, the rest of the globe is a cakewalk. Please dont let it go down like that. The world is counting on you!

It’s Not Just Us or Ron Paul, Its the Message
By nyletterpress | January 9, 2008

Daily Liberty Research
I can’t believe some people are willing to concede to defeat so fast after the New Hampshire results. I’ve seen a blog saying “the revolution is over,” or one said “the polls are correct” (as if to suggest we never had a chance).
As of right now Ron Paul has more delegates than Giuliani or Hunter, and more total votes than Giuliani, Hunter, and Thompson. There’s a chance that victories in other states could still make Paul eligible for the nomination. It’s not over. Many in our nation are calling for real leadership and Dr. Paul has already given that to us. Let’s double our peaceful, grassroots efforts and spread the message of hope.

Keene, NH restricted citizens access to polling grounds
By Amir | January 9, 2008
Amir from WeAreChange.org here. I, Vin, John Paul, Justin and Ford were canvassing across no man’s land in New Hampshire over the weekend, and by mere chance arrived in the small town of Keene, NH – famous for being the bedrock of the Free State Project – on Monday January 7th. As if god’s hidden hand was guiding us there, within 10 minutes of arriving a convoy of Secret Service vehicles had covered the area, clearing the room for an unexpected visit of ex-US president Bill Clinton. What a great opportunity to heckle(truth)! Standing this close to Bill and his agents left me with an overwhelming feeling of organ penetrating evil, the likes of which I have never felt before. There I had also met Tom, a state wide organizer for the 1988 Ron Paul presidential candidacy, standing strong in the blizzard cold weather, carrying the same message for nearly 20 years. What an inspiration. A true testament that evil is always met with good.

Guy says he saw the count for Paul go down
By Alawn | January 9, 2008
A guy says he saw the Paul count go down on CNN last night.
“Votes were definitely being skimmed off RP totals. I watched CNN last night for several hours for the sole purpose of watching the counts. They had the counts flipping at the bottom. Did anyone see Paul’s numbers get adjusted? I did… .. one shot had RP at 1185 then the next seconds following showed 1165….examples like this were numerous.”

Greetings from Big Horn County, Wyoming
By Observed45 | January 9, 2008
I finally decided to post what I saw at my local Republican caucus.
After three(3) secret ballots by the caucus delegates, the vote came to: Mitt Romney, sixteen(16) votes; Ron Paul, fifteen(15) votes. By the rules handed down to the county parties, this is a push, no winner. The rules used requires that the winning candidate receive 50% of the vote plus one vote. With thirty-one seated delegates or alternates, this requires a candidate to gain seventeen votes.
In the interest of fairness to the local party, the vote started with Romney getting fifteen(15) votes and Ron Paul coming in second with six(6). As the voting progressed: Romney got sixteen(16) while Ron Paul got twelve(12); finally Romney-sixteen(16), Paul-fifteen(15).

Six candidates to appear at GOP debate
Six candidates to appear at GOP debate
By Robert Morris
The Sun News
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, former Massachussetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee have all accepted their invitations, said Rob Godfrey, spokesman for the state Republican Party.
“The stakes couldn’t be higher this election, and we couldn’t be more excited to extend a warm South Carolina welcome to six White House hopefuls who are seeking the Republican nomination,” said Katon Dawson, chairman of the state GOP.
To be invited, candidates must have placed in the top 5 positions in the New Hampshire poll — McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Giuliani and Paul — or be polling at least 5 percent nationally, such as Thompson.
Several of the candidates already have early-state wins under their belts heading into Thursday’s debate, leaving the competition wide open. Huckabee won the Iowa caucus, Romney won a primary in Wyoming and McCain won in New Hampshire. Giuliani is campaigning on a national strategy that relies on his wide name-recognition, while Thompson is staking his campaign on Southern conservatives and Paul has an ardent base of supporters and very succesful fundraising.
Meanwhile, Thompson has several Horry County stops scheduled today on his bus tour across the state. Other candidates have planned events Thursday.
The debate will be broadcast live at 9 p.m. by FOX News from the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Brit Hume, the channel’s Washington managing editor, will moderate the debate. Anchor Chris Wallace and White House correspondent Wendell Goler will ask questions.

SECRET
DIVISION COMMANDER’S FINAL REPORT ON THE
GUADALCANAL OPERATION
PHASE IV
(20 August – 18 September)
Introduction
While the action at Matanikau on 19 August had effectively dispersed the last of the original enemy garrison on Guadalcanal, there were strong indications that an effort would be made to regain possession of the island with fresh troops. However the total lack of aircraft prevented effective reconnaissance except of the limited areas within reach of ground patrols and it was not until 19 August, when a combat patrol wiped out a party of Japanese a days march to the east, that an attack appeared imminent. At that time four of our battalions were holding prepared beach defences and a short flank extension along the Tenaru, the remaining battalion being kept in hand for counterattack. Patrolling and security measures were increased, particularly on the eastern flank.
Battle along the Tenaru
During the early hours of the night 20-21 August listening posts established east of the Tenaru fired flares and fell back to the main position reporting enemy movement to the east. This was followed by a small amount of rifle fire but neither fact was considered of particular significance as minor affrays with small enemy parties were of almost nightly occurrence.
At 0310 however heavy firing was heard from the mouth of the river where its channel, in dry weather, is blocked from the sea by an exposed sand spit some 100 yards in width, This bar was covered by a 37mm gun of the Special Weapons Battalion supported by a few machine guns and a small group of riflemen of 2nd Bn 1st Marines (Pollock) which garrisoned the sector. It was against these light defences that the enemy delivered their first assault – a quick surprise thrust across the bar by some 200 enemy infantry attacking in mass formation.
The position was not wired in and the enemy at first gained some success, breaking into the position and securing possession of some of the emplacements. In this initial assault the enemy lost heavily from the effect of the canister and machine gun fire which swept his exposed route of approach. Positions which were not overrun maintained their fire and the Japanese were unable to reorganise or extend their foothold within our lines. Shortly thereafter Company G, in Battalion reserve, reached the point of contact and launched a counterattack which succeeded in restoring the position and driving the enemy back across the bar.
Additional forces were soon involved on both sides and the action developed into a fire fight at close range. The Japanese placed heavy concentrations of artillery, mortar and machine gun fire on our positions at the end of the sand bar in an effort to blast a gap in the defences. On the other side of the river the 2nd Battalion strengthened its positions and, taking advantage of the opportunity for enfilade afforded by the re-entrant trace of the river, swept the enemy line with the flanking fire of their infantry weapons. At 0400 and again at 0515 prepared artillery concentrations were placed on the Japanese positions by 3rd Bn 11th Marines. Although observation was difficult because of the darkness the fire appeared to be well placed and effective.
By daybreak it was apparent that the 2nd Battalion, although seriously outnumbered at the actual point of contact, had gained definite fire superiority due to its advantage of position and strong artillery support. The enemy force did not appear to exceed one reinforced battalion and it was decided to pass the division reserve battalion across the river to effect envelopment. Accordingly 1st Bn 1st Marines (Creswell) was ordered to cross the river at a point upstream from the enemy position and move against the enemy’s exposed left flank and rear. The order was executed promptly and at 0950 the battalion commander was in position to begin the first phase of his attack a movement to the north and northwest to gain the hostile rear.
Company C (Stevenson) advancing to the right, reached the beach in the vicinity of Block Four Village where it encountered an enemy force of one platoon with machine guns. Company C advancing the attack, rapidly moving one platoon to the left to isolate the enemy group from the main body at the Tenaru. The hostile reaction took the form of the customary bayonet charge which was beaten off with heavy losses. Thereupon Company C closed in and bayoneted the survivors.
Company A (Brush) on the left, moved north and then northwest without opposition. By 1230 both companies changed direction to the west to reach the rear of the main enemy position. On the left a detachment of Company D was employed to prevent a hostile movement to the south. As the advance continued the enemy was forced into a confined position at the mouth of the Tenaru. Several efforts to break through towards the south were stopped by the Company D detachment and by 1400 the enemy was completely encircled. Some attempted to escape out to sea but were picked off by rifle fire. Before the manoeuvre was completed several groups attempted to make their way eastward along the beach but were destroyed or turned back by fighter aircraft which had arrived the previous day.
To conclude the engagement before nightfall a light tank platoon (Case) crossed the sand spit at 1500 and attacked the enemy position with canister and machine gun fire. Two tanks were disabled, one by an anti-tank mine, but the crews were rescued by the close supporting action of other tanks. Following the tank attack the infantry closed on the position and mopped up the remaining resistance.
By 1700 the operation was completed with almost complete annihilation of the enemy. It is estimated 900 Japanese were killed. One surrendered and fourteen were taken prisoner. Only two of the prisoners were unwounded. Our losses were thirty-four marines killed and seventy-five wounded.
The following items of enemy material were captured;
10 Heavy Machine Guns.
20 Light Machine Guns.
20 Heavy Grenade Throwers.
700 Rifles.
20 Pistols.
Undetermined number of sabres and hand grenades.
3 70mm Battalion Guns.
12 Flame Throwers (never used in operation)
Demolition equipment including large quantities of prepared TNT charges, anti-tank mines and Bangalore torpedoes.
Mopping up operations following the engagement along the Tenaru indicated that the enemy force of about 1100 men had been almost entirely destroyed. Those who survived were reported drifting to the east and pillaging native gardens to obtain food. However, it soon became apparent that the Japanese had by no means abandoned their basic design of recovering the airfield. Air patrols indicated that hostile surface vessels were making regular trips to Guadalcanal, and at sunset on 24 August scout bombers attacked a hostile surface force of cruisers, destroyers and transports 150 miles northwest of Guadalcanal. They inflicted heavy damage, probably sinking a cruiser and a large transport, and damaging other vessels. At 0200 2 September a second enemy task force was attacked near Taivu while engaged in landing troops. Meanwhile the intensity of enemy air attacks on our positions was steadily increased.
It was plain that the enemy was building up a second and larger force to the east of Lunga Point and it was equally clear that some form of offensive action on our part would be necessary. The means and methods were the only questions. The remaining Battalion of the Fifth Marines rejoined from Tulagi on 21 August and consideration was given to employing it in an operation to the east. However the enemy was again showing strength in the Matanikau area and there were indications that he had reinforced his position there with fresh troops. A renewed attack thus might assume the nature of simultaneous assaults on both flanks. The left (west) flank of the position was not a strong one and could be easily turned by a force moving along the open ridges in the defensive gap between the terminus of the flank extension and the Lunga River. The additional battalion was for these reasons assigned as a mobile reserve for the Fifth Marines, then holding the sector west of the Lunga.
Kokumbona Operation
Pending the development of plans for a new operation, a battalion of the Fifth Marines participated in a minor and unsuccessful action near Kokumbona on 27 August. This was a shore to shore operation which involved landing the battalion west of the village while an additional company moved overland by trail to intercept any hostile withdrawal inland. Artillery support was provided. The success of the operation depended upon the rapid movement of the battalion after the landing in order to strike the enemy from the west before he had time to bring about a redistribution of forces to cover his rear. However, the movement of the battalion was incredibly slow and its leadership irresolute and faltering. Little effort was made to utilize the terrain by moving a portion of the battalion along the open ridges inland from the beach to outflank the enemy from high ground. Instead, and contrary to plan, the main body was committed to a frontal assault which soon broke down. At the direction of this headquarters the regimental commander proceeded to the scene late in the afternoon, relieved the responsible officers and assumed tactical direction of the operation. The attack was resumed at daybreak the following morning, but the opportunity was gone, the enemy having withdrawn during the night. Our losses were 5 killed and 18 wounded. Only 20 enemy dead were counted. The operation had accomplished nothing beyond establishing the fact that the enemy to the west was not in great force.
Tasimboko Operation
Meanwhile preparations were made for an operation to the east. Native scouts reported that 200 – 300 well armed, well equipped troops held Tasimboko with defensive works west of the village faced to meet an attack from the west along the coast or astride the government track.
Fresh troops were available on Tulagi and authority was obtained to employ APD’s (destroyer transports) in a minor landing operation. In accordance with this plan the First Raider Battalion and the First Parachute Battalion were moved to Lunga Point. Both units were rested but under strength, the parachute battalion being particularly handicapped by a shortage of senior officers, resulting from casualties incurred on 7 August. In view of this shortage the battalion was attached by companies to the raider battalion under the command of Colonel Edson.
As the APD’s were to be available for only a limited period of time, it was necessary to complete the operation in a single day. As in the Kokumbona operation the plan entailed a landing beyond the objective (Tasimboko) followed by a movement designed to strike the enemy from the rear. On the eve of the operation additional information from native sources indicated a hostile strength of several thousand and this necessitated a reconsideration of the entire plan. It was considered that while the enemy had unquestionably been reinforced by night landings the figure reported by the native scouts was excessive and the decision was reached tom carry out the operation as scheduled.
The landing was made at dawn on 8 September without detection by the enemy. Unguarded arms and equipment were found near the landing beach and circumstances indicated that additional enemy forces had landed at the same point during the night. The landing force took up an attack formation and advanced to the west toward Tasimboko. Contact was made shortly after daybreak and the initial assault overran the enemy rear guard and succeeded in capturing a battery of artillery. The attack was maintained in the direction of the village with continuous air support by scout bomber and Army P-400′s. Resistance increased as the outskirts of the village were reached and it appeared that the engagement might have to be broken off. However, as the attack was pressed home, the Japanese evacuated the village, leaving behind them large stores of rice, medical supplies, arms and ammunition and a number of landing boats and barges. Contact was lost at 1230 and Colonel Edson destroyed the village together with the abandoned stores before withdrawing. Our losses were two killed and 6 wounded. Twenty-seven enemy dead were counted by the raiding force.
The action at Tasimboko resulted in the destruction of the enemy’s base, the loss of part of his artillery, and a large part of his essential supplies. This was to have a favourable effect on the operations to follow. The conduct of the Japanese on this occasion is difficult to understand. They were present in the Tasimboko area in overwhelming number (3,000 – 4,000) yet they abandoned their vital base after an indecisive action involving only a fraction of their troops. In explanation it may be offered that this failure may have been only a manifestation of the peculiar Japanese system of command, which, it has been stated, does not embrace the principle of mutual assistance by neighbouring units except at the direction of a common superior.
Following this operation patrols and native scouts reported on enemy movements which showed unmistakably that strong columns were moving west and southwest from Tasimboko along routes leading to bivouac areas to the south and southeast of our main positions. Small patrol encounters were of daily occurrence and it became increasingly difficult to penetrate the area to the east. In preparation for attack our right flank extension was completed and strengthened and the Raider Battalion, in division reserve, was charged with the development of a defensive position on an open ridge south of the airfield which constituted a dangerous avenue of approach to our rear. To the right rear of the Raiders’ position the Pioneer Battalion was bivouacked near the Lunga and established a covering position to intercept any attempt at a movement down the right (east) bank of the Lunga. The Engineer Battalion was bivouacked in echelon to the left rear of the Raider Battalion to afford some protection against any movement through the heavy jungle east of the ridge. None of these positions were complete or well organised as the dense jungle represented a terrific obstacle to be overcome only by weeks of labour at a time when it was all too obvious that only days remained to us.
Little could be done to close the defensive gap from the Lunga westward to the sea. The Pioneers established a strong point on a hill just east of the river, and in the centre of the gap a detachment of the Amphibian Tractor Battalion organised a strong point on an open ridge which commanded the main overland approach from the west. These measures were not altogether promising of a successful defence against a well coordinated attack but they represented the utmost that could be accomplished with available troops operating in extremely unfavourable terrain. A penetration of the position was almost a certainty but it was expected that the reserve could be employed to contain and breakthrough before it reached the vital area surrounding the airfield. (Annex J Defensive dispositions on 13 September).
By 11 September activity was increasing rapidly in that area east of the Lunga lying to the south and southeast of our position. On the 12th the Raider Battalion undertook a reconnaissance in force along the ridge and met strong resistance. During the night of 12 September there was a continuous and confusing series of encounters along the sketchy position held by the Raiders. At one point there was a breakthrough and lateral contact was not re-established until the following afternoon. Apparently the fact of the breakthrough was not known to the enemy commander for he failed to exploit it. There was also some activity along the Lunga and to the west and our position was subjected to a prolonged bombardment by naval gunfire.
On the morning of the 13th the Raiders again attempted to advance. Hard fighting took place during the day but the enemy resistance was strong and results wee inconclusive. The troops were utterly exhausted by their prolonged period of sustained combat and it was obvious to a staff officer who visited them on the afternoon of the 13th that their situation would become increasingly grave during the night. In the late afternoon the Raiders suspended their attack in order to re-establish their line for the night in a slightly withdrawn position. The new line had the advantage of stronger ground and tended to deceive the enemy by presenting a different front from the one offered the previous night. On the right this withdrawal permitted the establishment of a tenuous connection with the Pioneer Battalion but the left was still uncovered. Positions were hastily organised and every effort was made to establish a defence prior to nightfall.
Meanwhile, in view of the situation of the Raider Battalion, it was decided to effect their relief the following morning. Accordingly the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines (Whaling) in division reserve west of the Lunga, was moved across the river to a position along the southern edge of the airport disposed in depth with respect to both the Raider and Pioneer Battalions preparatory to relief on the following morning.
Battle of Edson’s Ridge
The situation confronting the Raider Battalion at sunset on 13 September was far from promising. Their lines were intact and their communications restored but the Battalion itself was faced with the necessity of holding a long and vulnerable front with a reduced strength of men already exhausted and shaken by forty – eight (48) hours of gruelling combat. The bare ridge extending normally to their front formed the backbone of their position and was held by Company B. On the left, where the main line of resistance dropped sharply away to a dense, unbroken jungle flat two small companies of parachutists were disposed to protect the open left flank. On the right, Company A held the area between the ridge and the Lunga maintaining a tenuous contact with the Pioneer Battalion which held both banks of the river. Company C was held in Battalion reserve.
A continuous cordon defence was impossible due to the terrain and the small numbers of the holding garrison. Units were organised in small combat groups of about platoon strength disposed at intervals along the main line of resistance. There were open fields of fire only in the centre of the position where the main line of resistance crossed the ridge but even here the abrupt slopes and broken ground made coordination of fires difficult. In the remaining hours of daylight the troops dug foxholes and cleared limited fields of fire: by nightfall the position was consolidated but under the circumstances was neither continuous nor complete, certainly to the extent necessary to resist a strong attack.
During the 13th the increasing enemy air activities of the previous days were brought to full pitch. The first attack at daylight, was turned back but at 1020, 1320 and again at 1750 bomber flights with strong zero escorts were pressed home. The field and the vicinity of the ridge were subject to repeated and intensive bombardment.
As soon as it was dark the enemy began his attack. The main enemy force, moving down the ridge, engaged the centre of Colonel Edson’s position frontally while a strong detachment moved through the jungle west of the ridge and struck on a narrow front against the position held by the right flank platoon of Company B. The platoon was surrounded and almost overwhelmed but succeeded in fighting its way to the ridge where it joined Company C in battalion reserve. This resulted in isolating the right flank company and exposing the vital central ridge to attack from the west by troops moving through the gap thus created.
The enemy was quick to follow up this advantage and moved strong parties through the opening to positions on the right flank of Company C. Additional and smaller groups infiltrated at other points disrupting wire communications and rendering control difficult. Since it was obvious that the ridge had become the immediate point of attack, Company B’s lines were re-established by refusing the right flank along the western slopes to forestall the inevitable attempt at envelopment.
Meanwhile the main enemy thrust down the ridge was growing in proportions. By 2200 the battalion commander estimated that the two under strength parachute companies and Company B (less one platoon) were opposed by at least two enemy battalions attacking in full force. Our artillery fire was growing in intensity as additional batteries were brought in but minimum range considerations prevented its full effectiveness in breaking up the oncoming formations which were launching repeated assaults against the small force of some 300 Marines who clung stubbornly to the ridge.
At 2230, the enemy launched a coordinated attack against the positions held by the parachutists on the left. The attack was preceded by a violent mortar barrage and the enemy advanced under cover of a smoke screen shouting “Gas Attack!”, “Gas Attack!” in English in an effort to demoralise the defenders. The attack drove the parachutists from their positions and they fell back along the ridge exposing the left flank of Company B which now found itself ringed by the enemy on three sides. Captain Sweeney who held the position now had but sixty (60) men available for its defence.
The battalion commander decided to withdraw the remainder of Company B and reform his position in the vicinity of the battalion reserve line. Here the ridge is dominated by a commanding hill which afforded a strong position and a natural rallying point in the darkness. Company C which held the position was used as a defensive nucleus and additional elements withdrawing from the forward positions were reformed and assigned to the position. There was an unavoidable intermingling of units and some confusion but through the efforts of senior battalion officers the position was re-established successfully.
Their reformation of lines was covered by Company C (Bailey) and by a standing barrage of 150mm which interdicted the approaches and assisted Major Bailey’s men in breaking up repeated attacks. Major Bailey, wounded at Tulagi and wounded again on this occasion was later to lose his life on the Matanikau. On this night by his coolness, energy and great personal bravery he did much to hold our last position intact during the critical periods of reorganisation. The artillery was likewise highly effective. With its communications disrupted and operating under technically disadvantageous circumstances it pounded incessantly at every target and placed its protective curtain of steel at every threatened point. It was the most intensive concentration of the campaign and the 2,000 rounds of ammunition expended did much to break up the successive enemy assaults.
By 0230 the battalion commander was confident that his position could be held although the attacks were continuing with unabated ferocity. Each was announced by a red rocket flare fixed to indicate the objective and direction of attack. Using this signal as a point of reference, our artillery combed the area and shortened its fire to cover the point of assault. When the enemy penetrated the barrage they would halt momentarily to illuminate our positions with calcium flares thrown by hand and then, breaking into the traditional “Banzai” cheer, would storm up the slopes toward our positions. Our reply was an intense volume of automatic fire reserved for close range and delivered in the space of a few seconds as the enemy attempted to cross the last few yards of open ground in front of our positions.
Before sunrise it was obvious that the fresh enemy impulses were growing successively weaker. At daylight the attacks ceased altogether, being replaced by a large volume of sniper and light machine gun fire from all sides. Our attack aviation began support missions at daylight and by 0700 there remained only the desultory fire of individual snipers who had infiltrated during the night and now found themselves cut off.
The action and conduct of those who participated in the defence of the ridge is deserving of the warmest commendation. The troops engaged were tired, sleepless and battle weary at the outset. Throughout the night they held their positions in the face of powerful attacks by overwhelming numbers of the enemy. Driven from one position they reorganised and clung tenaciously to another until daylight found the enemy again in full flight. To Colonel Edson, the battalion commander, is due the greatest of praise for the leadership, personal courage and intrepidity which inspired his exhausted men to remain faithful to their trust and to prevail in one of the most sanguinary encounters of the campaign.
The enemy force employed against the ridge undoubtedly exceeded 2,000 men. More than 600 enemy dead were found on the battlefield and many more were killed in mopping up operations to follow. This takes no account of the wounded, most of who died or were abandoned along the trails as the enemy fell back through the difficult terrain of the upper Lunga. Our losses were one () officer and thirty (30) men killed, five () officers and ninety-eight (98) men wounded and nine (9) missing or approximately twenty percent of the troops actually engaged.
In addition to the fight for the ridge our forces were engaged in another sector during the night of September 13 – 14 when the enemy attempted to break through the position held by Third Battalion, First Marines (McKelvey). This battalion held the extreme right of the right flank extension. In this area the Tenaru is no longer an obstacle and the position could be approached from the front or turned by a movement around the right flank which was entirely “in the air”. The line occupied by the battalion was sited along the edge of the jungle and overlooked a wide flat plain affording an ideal field of fire. The position lacked depth of any sort but the main line of resistance had been thoroughly prepared for defence. It was covered by continuous bands of tactical and protective wire, the grass had been burned off the plain and the plan of fires was well coordinated.
At midnight the enemy launched an attack across the plain against the front of the extreme right flank company. It failed to penetrate, but the fire fight continued for several hours. In the morning it was apparent that the edge of the woods across the plain was held by a force of at least one battalion with some artillery. Tanks were employed against the position, at first with some success. However, the mistake was made of attempting repeated sorties along the same route. Enemy anti-tank weapons were soon put into position and a subsequent sortie was met with close range fire which destroyed three tanks. Thereafter the fighting in this sector resolved itself into a desultory fire fight across the plain which continued intermittently until 16 September when the enemy withdrew. Enemy losses here were estimated at 200.
There was also an encounter on the extreme left flank where the short flank extension of the Fifth Marines terminated on a ridge commanding the coastal road leading to Matanikau. This position was held by Third Battalion, Fifth Marines (Biebush). The attack came without warning on the late afternoon of the 14th and for a time it appeared that the hill would be carried, as there were only small forces in position at the point of attack. However prompt reinforcement and timely artillery support eventually drove the attackers down the slopes and into the jungle. The attack was not renewed although there was considerable anxiety during the night due to the lack of reserves to support this area or to prevent a movement around its exposed flank.
Enemy Conduct of Operations
From an examination of captured documents it appeared that the Japanese plan was to launch three simultaneous assaults at remote points in an attempt to disrupt our defences. These attacks were to be supported by naval bombardment and strong air attacks. The plan failed through lack of coordination and timing. The naval bombardments were ineffective; Fire was delivered indiscriminately and sometimes fell in areas occupied by their own troops. Determined air assaults were made, but the strongest of these, a dive bombing attack on Henderson Field, was not delivered until sunset 14 September, too late to have had any effect on ground operations. The attack on the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, was almost twenty – four hours late and was not a sustained effort.
The plan was likewise complicated and gave little consideration to the difficulties to be encountered in night attacks delivered over rugged jungle country. There appears to have been a failure to reconnoitre our positions to detect the weak spots and the numerous gaps which existed in our defences. The preconceived scheme of manoeuvre was rigidly adhered to, despite the fact that it was obviously based on information of our defences as they existed at the time of the Tenaru battle. In action subordinate commanders ignored opportunities to improvise manoeuvres to fit the actual circumstances of terrain and defensive dispositions.
It is estimated that almost 8,000 enemy were engaged in these operations. The original intention doubtless was to employ a much larger force, for the toll of losses incurred from our air attacks on troops in transit must have been extremely heavy. Losses of supplies at Tasimboko likewise may have seriously impaired the main effort.
In an operation of this character a force may approach a defensive system under the limitless cover of the jungle without fear of detection. The defender is constrained to se dispose his forces that he is strong nowhere and lacks adequate reserves. To this extent the attacker enjoys a great advantage, for he may concentrate in overwhelming numbers at any selected point. Consequently he does not necessarily require superior forces to achieve success. In these operations, however, the enemy grossly underestimated our strength, our fighting qualities or both. It may be that his earlier successes against white troops in eastern theatres had induced a state of contempt for our capacity or willingness to fight. In any event he was thoroughly beaten at every point of contact and in the final analysis showed that he was utterly incapable, intellectually and morally, of meeting the requirements of modern warfare.
Subsequent Operations
Immediately following the battles of 12 – 14 September the division undertook a series of local offensives to clear the area of organized enemy forces and to destroy bands of survivors and stragglers. On 18 September First Battalion, First Marines (Cresswell) successfully engaged a strong enemy force to the south, driving it up the Lunga with heavy losses. Our losses were eighteen (18) killed and wounded. Similar engagements and minor patrol actions were of daily occurrence until the end of the period. Large quantities of abandoned arms, ammunition and equipment were captured. In one instance two complete batteries of field artillery were found abandoned in place and in their firing positions. All signs pointed to the complete demoralization of the enemy. Such forces as remained to him drifted to the west across the Lunga, thence to the headquarters of the Matanikau via Mambula, the mountain which forms the watershed between the two rivers.
Air Operations
For purposes of clarity little mention has been made of the tremendous contribution of aircraft to the success of the defense during this period. Even in the original order for the defense of the islands, prepared during the approach to the Solomons, it was stated that the primary means of defense would be aircraft and this concept was never departed from throughout the period of our occupation. The defense was to be reciprocal. The mission of the air force was to be that of disrupting attempts at a major landing. The mission of the ground forces was to protect the airfield by destroying hostile forces ashore and, by unceasing vigilance, to prevent a surprise attack from the sea by night. Both forces succeeded substantially, if not completely in carrying out their assigned tasks.
Bombardment elements undertook continuous operations to seek out and destroy approaching hostile surface vessels while fighter elements protected the area from the constant attacks of hostile bombers. Both united to support the ground forces as opportunities presented themselves. There was at all times a complete coordination and a perfect understanding between the ground forces and the Army, Navy and Marine Corps units which made up our efficient, if heterogeneous, air force.
Hostile night landings made from high speed destroyers were difficult to intercept. Approaching vessels did not enter the effective radius of action of our aircraft until late afternoon. This confined our retaliatory action to a single bombing mission before nightfall, except on clear moonlit nights when it was possible to continue attacks throughout the night. The heavy toll of enemy vessels damaged and destroyed I these attacks had the general effect of cutting down his naval superiority in the South Pacific and the local effect of reducing the strength of his landing forces with consequent detriment to their moral and effectiveness.
The fighter units were invariably successful in the unending series of encounters over Henderson Field. Losses of five enemy aircraft to one of our own were the usual ratio. When shot down in combat a large proportion of our pilots were rescued, whereas enemy personnel were almost always killed or captured. The offensive spirit of the fighter pilots was magnificent and inspiring. Odds were never counted. For example, on August 30 only eight (8) fighters were available on the island. From 1220 to 1400 they engaged in a continuous fight with a large force of Zeros. Eighteen (18) Zeros were shot down, but our effective fighter strength was reduced from eight to four. While these four remaining fighters were being serviced a second formation of enemy planes attacked, sinking the CALHOUN, a destroyer transport. The four fighters immediately took to the air and gained altitude in time to engage the third enemy flight. In this second engagement eight enemy planes were shot down without further loss to ourselves. Annex includes a summary of aerial combats during the period.
The Army P-400 types were especially valuable in supporting ground activities although dive bombers were also employed on occasion. Both types were used with good effect in support of the Tasimboko raid in spite of poor air-ground communications. Thereafter steps were taken to improvise air liaison parties. These proved a distinct improvement but there remained a need for regularly organized air-ground communication teams within Infantry Regiments. At the battle of the ridge P-400s took to the air at daylight on 14 September and drove the last remaining enemy forces from their positions along the ridge. Thereafter they engaged in a continuous series of independent operations against hostile landing craft, bivouacs, and troop formations.
Logistics
The supply problem greatly improved during this period. In addition to small destroyer transports, it was found practicable to bring larger ships into the area as well. This was largely due to the high order of performance of our interception fighters which almost invariably were able to break up hostile bombing formations before the latter had opportunity for delivering a coordinated attack. Small reserves of ammunition, defensive materials and rations were landed and it was evident that for the time being at least our lines of communications could be maintained. At the end of the period full rations were restored for all troops except headquarters units. (Annex C Logistics).
Lessons and Conclusions – Phase IV
1. A major landing operation such as the Guadalcanal – Tulagi attack will be followed by a period of minor operations for purposes of defense, mopping up and seizure of small outlying bases. To accomplish these tasks successfully landing equipment must remain available to the landing force for tactical purposes. During the entire Guadalcanal operation the use of attached landing craft for tactical purposes was, of necessity, subordinated to their administrative employment in the unloading of supply vessels. Likewise the few APD’s available were usually assigned to escort duty for which they were ill adapted. Three were lost on such duty during the period covered by this report. These factors had an extremely adverse effect on the conduct of the entire operation. Only limited operations involving the use of small numbers of craft could be planned. In repeated instances it was necessary to cancel planned operations due to the unexpected arrival of supply vessels or non-availability of APD’s. To execute the Tasimboko landing, for example, it was necessary to shuttle the raiding force from Lunga in two echelons a procedure that exposed the advance force to the danger of defeat in detail. Future operations should make provision for a force of landing craft and APD’s to remain with the landing force at all times for purely tactical missions.
Organization and Training
2. (1) The 11th Marines (Artillery) on 21 August and again on 13 September showed great proficiency and technical skill in the use of its artillery in close support of defensive operations.
(2) Prior to the Solomons operation some doubt was entertained as to the practicability of employing the 105mm in jungle warfare in view of its lack of mobility. It is now considered that this weapon has a definite place in future operations in the Pacific. Since large scale operations will almost invariably centre on the seizure or defense of installations on or near the sea, ramp boats and amphibian tractors can be employed to move artillery. In this same connection it should also be noted that the coastal terrain of the Pacific islands often includes areas of flat ground permitting free movement of guns and normal prime movers, The superior effectiveness of this weapon and its desirable ballistic characteristics were clearly demonstrated on the night of 13 September. It is considered highly desirable that these advantages be retained by continuing to include this type of artillery in all large operations.
(3) Tanks were employed with some success on two occasions. An analysis of these actions indicates:
(a) That the jungle is generally unfavorable for tank action.
(b) That tanks in small numbers can operate effectively in areas
occupied by coconut plantations.
(c) That the tanks must operate at slow speed and with extremely
close infantry support.
-
(d) That wherever possible medium tanks should be employed due to
-
the extreme vulnerability of the light models.
(4) During this period it was necessary to employ pioneers and engineers on
Infantry missions. The results clearly vindicated the Marine Corps policy of thorough training of such units in weapons and tactics.
(5) There appeared a distinct need for regularly organized air support parties to accompany ground forces foe liaison and control purposes in connection with the use of supporting aircraft.
(6) The presence of a limited number of qualified interpreters to translate enemy documents and examine prisoners of war was of great value in ascertaining enemy intentions and in studying his habits of combat.
Equipment
3. (1) The absence of sufficient defensive material was a severe handicap throughout the period. None was landed initially and only small amounts were received in subsequent shipments of supplies. It is recommended that a higher landing priority be assigned to a small portion of such material. As a result of this experience the present landing operations procedure of this division prescribes that ten (10) per cent of such supplies shall be assigned landing priority “X” – Variable” (i.e. so embarked as to be accessible for landing on call at any time during the ship to shore movement).
(2) A proportion of the defensive wire carried by the division should be of the prepared concertina type. It will often be necessary to pass to the defensive on such short notice as to preclude erection of double apron fence prior to attack. Wired in defenses are highly desirable particularly in the event of night attack. This division contemplates carrying sixty (60) percent concertina in all future operations.
(3) Since it is obvious that the enemy will always resort to night attack there is an urgent need for night illumination material in defensive operations. This should take the form of parachute flares for illuminating beaches and a hand thrown flare for illuminating the immediate foreground of jungle positions.
Command
4. Before entering combat all officers who do not appear to possess the requisite command ability should be relieved of command. It is better to enter combat with limited shortage of officers than to be faced with the necessity of relieving the incapable in the presence of the enemy.
Enemy
5. The enemy demonstrates a high state of training with respect to night operations: movement and control were excellent. However, he underestimates the disadvantages accruing to this type of attack particularly with respect to the effectiveness of the prearranged night fires of the defense. To preserve direction he followed the conventional practice of moving dense columns of infantry along terrain lines leading to the objective. These were interdicted as a matter of course by the deep supporting fires of our artillery and mortars. In consequence severe losses were inflicted upon many enemy columns during the approach march.

SECRET ANNEX H
AVIATION ACTIVITIES ON GUADALCANAL
The first combat aircraft arrived on 20 August 1942 when VMF 223 and VMSB 232 began their memorable tour of duty at Henderson Field. Much of the success of the Guadalcanal operation was due to the tireless efforts of these two squadrons and especially to their commanding officers Major. R. C. Mangrum and Captain J. L. Smith. Beginning operations the very next day the first of many Japanese planes was shot down. From that time on aviation became a sore spot to the Japanese. All aircraft arriving at Henderson Field subsequently carried out operations as efficiently as the first group but under much better conditions. The forward echelon of Marine Air Group 23 arrived without any ground crews and no equipment. Service and maintenance was performed by a small detachment of men from CUB 1 assisted by all and any marine who happened to be handy. To these men should go the credit for air operations in the first stages of the Guadalcanal campaign. As equipment and personnel arrived the operations took on a more organized aspect and the results improved accordingly. This force was composed of Marine, Army, Navy and finally by New Zealand Air Force personnel and equipment.
Activity at the Pagoda increased and it finally became the control centre for the entire air force on Guadalcanal until naval bombardment forced it to be abandoned.
The newly arrived air arm distinguished itself immediately on the first day of Phase IV by attacking Japanese forces at Tenaru and by engaging enemy aircraft.
Throughout the remainder of the Division occupation aircraft carried on all types of operations including aerial combat, strafing and bombing of enemy ground positions, reconnaissance both land and sea, attacks on surface vessels, food and message drops and utility missions between the islands including the rescue of stranded aviators and flights between the islands with various officials.
During the First Marine Division’s stay on Guadalcanal aviation based there destroyed 416 Japanese planes, sank 21 Japanese vessels with the loss of 78 planes in combat; the crews of about 50 per cent being saved.

Marianne Pernold was called by Clinton’s campaign ahead of time to go to the coffee shop in Ft. Smith New Hampshire (older woman-democrat). She was invited by Terry Norelli of Hillary’s campaign. Questioner thinks that Hillary was sincere because the question was personal. Marianne says that immediately after the crying, Hillary resumed the political face.

CIA Diary

p37
… what the Agency [CIA] does is ordered by the President and the NSC [National Security Council]. The Agency neither makes decisions on policy nor acts on its own account. It is an instrument of the President.
… the question of Congressional monitoring of intelligence activities and of the Agency in particular. The problem resides in the National Security Act of 1947 and also in its amendment, the Central Intelligence Agency Act of 1949. These laws charged the DCI [Director of Central Intelligence] with protecting the ‘sources and methods’ of the US intelligence effort and also exempted the DCI and the Bureau of the Budget from reporting to Congress on the organization, function, personnel and expenditures of the CIA – whose budget is hidden in the budgets of other executive agencies. The DCI, in fact, can secretly spend whatever portion of the CIA budget he determines necessary, with no other accounting than his own signature. Such expenditures, free from review by Congress or the General Accounting Office or, in theory, by anyone outside the executive-branch, are called ‘unvouchered funds’.
By passage of these laws Congress has sealed itself off from CIA activities, although four small sub-committees are informed periodically on important matters by the DCI. These are the Senate and House sub-committees of the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, and the speeches of their principal spokesman, Senator Richard Russell, are required reading for the JOT’S.
There have been several times when ClA autonomy was threatened. The Hoover Commission Task Force on Intelligence Activities headed by General Mark Clark recommended in 1955 that a Congressional Watchdog Committee be established to oversee the CIA much as the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy watches over the AEC. The Clark Committee, in fact, did not believe the sub-committees of the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees were able to exercise effectively the Congressional monitoring function. However, the problem was corrected, according to the Agency position, when President Eisenhower, early in 1956, established his own appointative committee to oversee the Agency. This is the President’s Board of Consultants on Foreign Intelligence Activities, whose chairman is James R. Killian, President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It can provide the kind of ‘private citizen’ monitoring of the Agency that Congress didn’t want. Moreover … the more Congress gets into the act the greater the danger of accidental revelation of secrets by indiscreet politicians. Established relationships with intelligence services of other countries, like Great Britain, might be complicated. The Congress was quite right at the beginning in giving up control – so much for them, their job is to appropriate the money.

In addition to discovering ordinary state secrets, the CS is responsible for obtaining the most complete and accurate information possible on the global manifestations of Soviet imperialism, that is, on local communist parties and related political groups. The exceptions to the world-wide operating charter of the CS is the agreement among the US, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand whereby each has formally promised to abstain from secret operations of any kind within the territory of the others except with prior approval of the host government. The governments of all other nations, their internal political groups and their scientific, military and economic secrets are fair game.

Outspoken Wash Critic/Quit CIA Agent Agee Dies In Cuba….
Ex-CIA Agent Philip Agee Dead in Cuba
HAVANA (AP) — Philip Agee, a former CIA agent who became an outspoken critic of Washington’s Cuba policy, has died in a Havana hospital following ulcer surgery, state media reported Wednesday. He was 72.
Agee quit the CIA in 1969 after 12 years working mostly in Latin America at a time when leftist movements were gaining prominence and sympathizers. His 1975 book “Inside the Company: CIA Diary,” cited alleged CIA misdeeds against leftists in the region that included a 22-page list of purported agency operatives.
Granma, Cuba’s Communist Party newspaper, said Agee died Monday night and described him as “a loyal friend of Cuba and fervent defender of the peoples’ fight for a better world.”
Bernie Dwyer, a journalist with state-run Radio Havana, said in a Tuesday message posted to a Cuba e-mail group that Agee’s wife called him to say he had died in the hospital, where he has he been since Dec. 15.
“He had several operations for perforated ulcers and didn’t survive all the surgery,” Dwyer wrote, adding that Agee was cremated Tuesday and that friends planned a memorial ceremony for him Sunday at his Havana apartment.
In 2000, with European investors and a state-run travel agent as his partners, Agee opened a travel Web site designed to bring U.S. tourists to Cuba. The site, cubalinda.com, offers package tours and other help with Cuban tourism that is largely off limits to Americans.
There was no word of Agee’s death on the site Wednesday.
The author of several other books besides “Inside the Company,” one of Agee’s last essays was published in Granma International newspaper in 2003 and came shortly after a Cuban government crackdown led to the arrest of 75 leading dissidents and political activists.
“To think that the dissidents were creating an independent, free civil society is absurd, for they were funded and controlled by a hostile foreign power and to that degree, which was total, they were not free or independent in the least,” he wrote.
Agee has also been accused of receiving up to $1 million in payments from the Cuban intelligence service. He denied the accusations, which were first made by a high-ranking Cuban intelligence officer and defector in a 1992 report.
Barbara Bush, the wife of former President George H.W. Bush — himself a one-time CIA chief — in her autobiography accused Agee’s book of exposing a CIA station chief, Richard S. Welch, who was later killed by leftist terrorists in Athens in 1975. Agee, who denied any involvement in the killing, sued her for $4 million for defamation, and she revised the book to settle the case.
Agee’s U.S. passport was revoked in 1979. U.S. officials said he had threatened national security. After years of living in Hamburg, Germany — occasionally underground, fearing CIA retribution — Agee moved to Havana to open the travel site.

The Essence of Liberty #218, The Trouble With France

Chapter 4: Judges: Power-Hungry from the Beginning The trouble with France The French Revolution began in 1789 and took and took a nasty turn when the king and queen were deposed and killed. Hamilton did not want to become embroiled in a world war. He felt that America was too week and any involvement would mean an interruption of trade with England . This, in turn, would mean a major disruption in federal tax revenue because most if it came from tariffs (taxes on imports). Jefferson noted that America had, since 1778, been under treaty to come to France ‘s assistance if it were attacked. Thus, under the law of nations, France had every moral and legal right to expect military assistance. But, Hamilton pointed out that the treaty was between the uS and Louis XVI who was deposed in 1792. Thus, since the treaty had lapsed, America was under no moral or legal obligation to assist Washington took Hamilton’s position and issued a proclamation to the effect that any citizen who aided either side would be prosecuted. To Republicans, that proclamation was an executive branch usurpation. Constitutionally, the president was to execute policy, not make it. Partisan tension was high within the states as well as among them. In 1794 some northern senators tried to convince John Taylor of Caroline that the political divide between North and South was irreparable, and that they, therefore, should broker a permanent scission. Taylor rejected the idea and said that, if Hamilton ‘s financial program were repealed, inter-sectional grievances would end. But the idea stayed in his mind. Major allegations of vote fraud in New Hampshire are circulating after Hillary Clinton reversed a mammoth pre-polling deficit to defeat Barack Obama with the aid of Diebold electronic voting machines, while confirmed votes for Ron Paul in the Sutton district were not even counted.
According to a voter in Sutton, New Hampshire, three of her family members voted for Ron Paul, yet when she checked the voting map on the Politico website, the total votes for Ron Paul were zero.
With 100% of precincts now reporting, the map still says zero votes for Ron Paul as you can see below.
CLICK FOR ENLARGEMENT
It’s not as if Sutton had a handful of voters like some other districts – a total of 386 people voted yet we are led to believe that not one voted for Ron Paul? Judging by the Iowa results, around 10% of residents would be expected to vote for the Congressman, returning a total of around 38 votes in this district. Let’s be ultra-conservative and say just 5% support Paul – he’d still get 19 votes – but he got absolutely none whatsoever. Is there something wrong with this picture?
Greenville also tallied 144 votes yet not one for Congressman Paul.
Anyone else in Sutton who voted for Ron Paul needs to go public immediately with the charge of vote fraud and make it known that they were cheated out of their right to vote.
Diebold voting machines also did Congressman Paul no favors last night – compared to hand counted ballots Giuliani gained just short of 0.5% from electronic voting whereas Paul lost over 2%, which was the difference between finishing 4th and 5th, as this graph documents.
Mitt Romney profited the most from the Diebold swing, he received 7% more votes compared to hand counted ballots.
In the Democratic race the Diebold voting machines clearly swung the primary in Hillary Clinton’s favor at the expense of Barack Obama, who had a commanding lead over the New York Senator going into the contest.
Zogby polling numbers had Obama leading Clinton by a whopping 42/29 per cent, yet Clinton eventually took the primary by three per cent.
“If I was Barack Obama, I’d certainly not have conceded this election this quickly,” writes The Brad Blog. “I’m not quite sure what he was thinking. And as far as offering an indication of whether he understands how these systems work, and the necessity of making sure that votes are counted, and counted accurately, it does not offer a great deal of confidence at this hour.”
“While I have no evidence at this time — let me repeat, no evidence at this time — of chicanery, what we do know is that chicanery, with this particular voting system, is not particularly difficult. Particularly when one private company — and a less-than-respectable one at that, as I detailed in the previous post — runs the entire process.”

Clinton would not have beat Obama without the aid of Diebold voting machines. In precincts where electronic voting machines were used, Clinton got a 7% swing over Obama, having gained 5% in comparison to hand-counted ballots and Obama losing 2%.
As we reported yesterday, the contract for programming all of New Hampshire’s Diebold voting machines, which combined counted 81 per cent of the vote yesterday, is owned by LHS Associates, whose owner John Silvestro has gone to great lengths to deflect accusations that the machines can easily be rigged.
After purchasing a Diebold 1.94w machine, the same system used in New Hampshire, a computer repair shop employee picked at random by Black Box Voting was able to zero in on the system’s vulnerable memory card within just ten minutes. Hacking expert Harri Hursti testified in front of the New Hampshire legislature that the machines were wide open to fraud.

THE CANDIDATE CAFÉ….(“If you’re sober, sane and still care, your portion is anger and disgust”)
THE CANDIDATE CAFÉ
Dr. Eugene Narrett, Ph.D
January 9, 2008
NewsWithViews.com
It’s always on in the airports, too; must be a coincidence.
It was Wild Card weekend but that didn’t stop the other part of the distraction machine from grinding out its alternate fare. And speaking of fair, there was Hillary Clinton at a virtually spontaneous “lunch at a diner” meeting with some “typical” denizens of New Hampshire whose “first in the nation” primary used to be in February. But in the rush of these times they’ve moved it up so it still will precede Super Sunday which is a bit after the Super Bowl, for now.
You can’t tell the players without a program…
At the diner, Mrs. Clinton sat at the head of a long table, gesturing like a President and trying to appear natural: it wasn’t pretty. Grim-faced couples tried to smile. The ones who grinned looked worse than the others. A bouncy middle-aged gal who just happened to be sitting next to the Senator asked what book she had most recently read “for pleasure, just for your self”: Uh, Justine or, perhaps, the Diary of Lesbia Brandon? The candidate was still winding her way toward an answer, looking more spontaneous all the time when this writer trudged off to the stretching mats and tried to forget everything.
Stretch it out, ride a bike, stretch again, shower, car, make and eat dinner, one step at a time: the darker it gets, the simpler one tries to keep it, — before they take it all away. Mozart, a little football; it’s boring, though some distraction helps; you’re addicted and the world is painful. A hovel’s better than the moor on a night like this. But in the perennial campaign the candidates are having a “debate.”
The red team went first. The inquisitor from central control was like a ten degree day: it hurt the eyes to see and the ears to hear him build the corral for discussion. At his mercy were six persons on stage enshrouded in a smog of clichéd categories of “thought” and slogans that worked like Novocain. The writer dimly remembers his mind struggling against the undertow. After the Reds (they inverted the historical reference of the colors about a dozen years ago) the Blue team came on. It was smaller, more lithe and quirky and showed that famous diversity about which one has heard.
If you’re sober, sane and still care, your portion is anger and disgust. Thank heaven for the ability to write and try to squeeze a smile out of Orwell’s nightmare fulfilled…
It’s sad to see how far discussion has regressed into slogans, remnants of thought even more tired than Fred Thompson’s or Mrs. Rodham-Clinton’s faces. Thompson looked avuncular and defeated; Mrs. Clinton looked tired and angry. She probably knows the Group has earmarked her for rough water in this part of the schedule. But then, she’s a tough gal. In her scripted arguments with Mr. Obama the younger fellow was consistently more cogent. His suavity seemed less sinister, less disturbingly artificial and made-in-a-lab; or perhaps the observer just grows tired and numb. He explained the evolution of his position on health insurance though not what its results would be: the only one who really touched on that, to my surprise was the former mayor of New York who sharply criticized “socialized medicine”: good for him! But “words without deeds do not to heaven go…”
Is John Edwards real? Kind of an unfair question since three-dimensionality is not the purpose of the perennial campaign – distraction machine (or of much else in this virtual time). But this fellow – the ambulance-chaser who loves the middle class, how did he get here? Is all the voting in his state by electronic balloting? Have all the people there been podded? He says he has a somewhat different schedule for withdrawing all our troops from “Iraq” than Mrs. Clinton does. Edward’s bookend was the cadre who used to run the machine in New Mexico and whose current role as a “serious” candidate seems to be deflecting heat from Ms. Clinton, and the other blues by being more egregiously to the internationalist left in that gravel-voiced, blunt-talking vapid way the Democrats long have honed for bit-parts like his.
Mrs. Clinton, or the pod playing her, who used to say “when I wake up in the morning I never know who I’m going to be today” now talks about the importance of principles and solid accomplishments; she’s not just for “change” like the other candidates claim to be, one of the perennial mega-slogans coming around the carousel again. She mentioned that she’s been “getting things accomplished for thirty-five years.” She was in Law School then, germinating the notions and relationships that eventually sprung from the crypt under the rubric of “it takes a village” of lawyers to seize your children and destroy their hopes, minds, lives and society. But you can’t say that on TV…
Repeatedly the viewer felt a Rip van Winkle sensation as decades swirled in the fog of slogans. Was it 1962, ’72, ’82 or ’92? The Blues talked a lot about “nuclear non-proliferation and fretted that Bush had flubbed it. No one asked how Putin, China or others might be induced to comply. Please: this is the anesthetic clinic. They moaned about “disarmament” which means unilateral American disarmament. Are the Reds and Blues both commies? Is the sky blue? (Not in Massachusetts: it’s purple).
Oil prices are too high; we ought to build a refinery. We need to develop alternate fuels, solar, wind, gas…they were sawing wood and gassing good. Heck, it’s just a Punch and Judy show. Maybe a dictator President could cut taxes 80%; maybe DC will melt: s* happens; sometimes it amounts to progress.
Every word, category of policy and “issue” arrives in a comic strip bubble above heads of implausible but official contenders. They all talked about “health care”; the phrase and reality of “the practice of medicine” is gone, off the table. Mr. Huckabee said we spend too much treating diseases and not enough on prevention; he’s right. He criticized “the Pharmaceuticals” and sleepy Ted objected. None of the pods discussed, nor did the inquisitor prod them to discuss the fact that states like the one Mr. Romney pretended to govern now force people to buy care (unless you’re an illegal alien) that’s unaffordable for most and then penalize them via taxes if they fail to bow to the State’s demand that they buy the machine that beggars them. Obama approached this nasty point but reined up. No one mentioned this frightening coercion; the long-time epidemic of divorce, a genuine issue that must not be broached; a candidate in Massachusetts was targeted by disbarment proceedings after noting “the terrible way fathers are treated in divorce courts.”
The enormous size and intrusive power of the government was never questioned, as it used to be. Results are another matter but at least the thought and words once existed in national politics. “Affirmative action” and “preferences” were not questioned; the ruin of education by Momism and “peer-oriented” “collaborative student-centered learning” was not mentioned. Didn’t there also used to be some forceful statements about cutting taxes and the size of the Federal government? The bad thing about older people is that they remember too much of when things were very different, when there was affordable and truly accessible medical care (not “health care”) and we learned history, multiplication tables and converting to fractions.
How little ground even then remained beneath our feet…
But we have “politics” – that’s what “democracy” is, right? Elections and debates…Like sodden paper, the Constitutional Republic comes to pieces like the border.
No one mentioned that the main overt policy goal of this administration is creating a “Palestinian” State in Judea and Samaria and the “Gaza strip” or that its main covert goal is forming a North American union as part of a regionalized World State. No borders there, no borders here, no borders anywhere. Telecom ads croon, “know no boundaries.”
Rip didn’t hear the gang even talk about “fixing” social security; that’s good: a bit less pretense. The Blue Team did not talk about securing the southern border. Though some reds still say the word Mr. Tancredo has gone away to facilitate the synthesis of the teams in a purple mélange. He’s smart: when you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything!
We did not hear all two or three hours of the back to back, belly-to-belly zombie jamboree. Rip’s pain threshold is not that high. Is there a high-low or over-under on the campaign-machine? He can’t recall discussion of how many of us will have to die in the next thirteen years to save the environment™.
John McCain has experience™ and I believe he and the Mayor and Mr. Romney believe General Petraeus has done great things with the surge. The Red Team mostly agreed that it was crazy to tell an armed enemy when upcoming deployments will occur while Ms. Blue Team vowed, sawing the air that “when I’m elected President, the troops will be withdrawn in sixty days.” Fiat lux said Persephone; or maybe Rip dreamed it.
Several members of Team Red hinted that withdrawing our forces would leave a vacuum that would be filled by Iran. True, though none mentioned that this was a main reason for the invasion of Mesopotamia. One or two of them has learned enough history to know that there are three very disparate regions in the artificial, British-created state. None of them mentioned that Iran is the Group’s partner in the overarching dialectic in the region. Governor Bill grumbled that the President is a dictator and then said we should tell Pakistan when and how to have elections. Mrs. Clinton angrily decried the failure of port security under the Bush-fronted regime: and when she was co-President what happened?

Mr. Huckster-be mentioned abortion and the sanctity of life two or three times but seemed otherwise ill at ease and out of his depth: did someone hand him “the black spot” before the event? Oprah makes two and a half million $/day, John D. Rockefeller is worth two and half billion (the rest must be in the mattress foundation), Bill Gates scores of billions and Ted Turner owns twelve million or so acres of land and bison burgers [1]. Can’t they teach Johnny to read? He, Dick and Jane are hot streaming video on their cell phones and staring at double-screen I-pods.
In the brave new world, you are your I-pod: who says the puppeteers lack humor?
Okay: Romney wins, Obama wins, the media tell us what it means and increase our handicap. The winners should marry: it’s all about synthesis. Imagine the power couple flavors and options. And there would be one party for one world of love…
A reader wrote that they especially liked the hug-fest in between the “debates” when the members of both teams got on stage together. It was like the last sentences of Animal Farm, like a prim-mouthed, ten-horned flying purple people eater. Good night.

Let’s Talk About ‘Low Blows’ (McCain)
Let’s Talk About ‘Low Blows’

Joe: As to your outrage over McCain ( “low blow after what he went through”) . Because of his father’s status (Commander of Pacific fleet) was afforded ‘medical care’ that other POW didn’t (therefore died). There are not many (like none) veterans who have a memorial erected to them in HANOI.
I suggest that before you waste a lot of time over McCain you do some research of just how McCain was treated in Vietnam – (his own testimony) – and his bizarre actions towards families (I was there – were you?) of POWS in the ’91 hearings. He stunned everyone when he rushed to the witness table and HUGGED North Vietnamese, Col. Bui Tin (responsible for POW deaths and torture). He has had his own records sealed and those of other (legislation) POWS. He HUGS a killer/torturer of our men and called the families of those LEFT BEHIND – ‘charlatans, whiners, vultures, lunatic fringe’
Tell me, this is SANE? He insisted they ‘be investigated’ by the Justice Dept. John had visitors as a POW (nobody else did). He certainly wasn’t living in a bamboo cage (like others). He was afforded (after he told them who his father was) the best of medical attentions. Some people, are FOREVER, unhuggable under any circumstances. Besides the atrocities against OUR MEN – the North Vietnamese were responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths against innocent civilians. Who the hell would HUG a KILLER and mock American families? What a ‘low blow’.

Now if you’ve got a problem with ‘low blows’ how about BUSH in S.C. (2000) and his buddy Karl Rove. Did you write to the White House? He was identified in fliers handed out at churches as “The Fag Candidate”. It was circulated amongst the ‘gullible’ church going Southerners; that his adopted daughter from Bangladeshi was black – and that his wife was a drug addict. Rove suggested that McCain committed TREASON while a POW and on and on the smear went. Apparently all this was forgiven (?) with McCain hugging Bush in 20004. Gosh, accused of TREASON? I’d want to set that record straight! He didn’t. Then we have Bush delivering McCain a birthday cake in the middle (2005) of Katrina?
Meantime our veterans are living under bridges in our nation’s CAPITAL – or in shanties they’ve built in the woods. I worked for YEARS with homeless veterans. John wasn’t there pleading their cause. I found (WWII) Joe in a car with maggots eating out his foot. James (Korea) was living under a bridge with rats. Denis lived in a plastic tent in the park (near yacht club). He was beaten to death for his ‘canning’ money. Mr. Christanson was beaten to death in his car (where he lived) for his disability money. Mr.Elliott (WWII Naval photographer) was beaten to death in his wheelchair by an illegal immigrant (dishwasher) in an alley behind an upscale restaurant. This boutique town wanted to charge him $5.00 a night for their 12 person (token) shelter. Bob, Vietnam, burned to death in an abandoned house. On and on and on ( I could tell you dozens of stories). Don’t tell me what JOHN’S been through. A couple thousand were left behind (read the McCain POW hearing transcripts for an eye opener) to ROT in jungle cages. Let’s not even address KOREA and those missing. Those who came home have been kicked to the curb – and made to BEG for benefits.
Luis – age 21 doesn’t even get a PURPLE HEART. He was permanently paralyzed when a statue of Saddam he was ordered to tear down fell on him~
Let’s talk about ‘low blows’. These are our newest veterans. I imagine that you’ve read the investigative stories in the Washington Post on the deplorable treatment of vets at Walter Reed ( a few miles from the Capital). Low blows? These men and women were sent into battle in Humvees with NO armor. They had to put sandbags on the floor of their vehicles to try and survive! Ty (the burned Marine above ) had to fight a (like all the vets) bureaucratic maze to get disability (also a missing arm). John (blind) lives in a trailer in West Virginia. Most don’t realize that services have now been OUTSOURCED to profit making companies. If these men and women had been traveling in a Presidential motorcade through the streets o f Tuscon they would have had ARMOR.
Visit our nation’s CAPITAL and meet the veterans in the pocket park on K Street ( Lobbyist’s Mecca). A mile away the Legislatures are building themselves a $500,000 to one billion dollar bunker/visitor’s center. This so that citizens who visit can be scanned, x-rayed, and searched, before entering the Capitol building. Visit the weeping WALL – Darn, McNamara (Defense Secretary) wrote in his book that Vietnam was ‘a mistake’……….That’s a “low blow” for the 58,000 + names doncha think?
As Marine General ( 34 years) Smedly Butler said “War is a Racket”. The young die…shredded for fat rich men who rake in the profits. Halliburton (now moved to tax free Dubai) has made BILLIONS while a kid in battle is paid the wages of a McDonald’s manager. No automatic cost of living increases in their checks like Legislators pensions. Oil profits are at unheard of multi-billions in profits. Who, pray tell, will care for the youngster above (now here’s life long suffering – no heiress for him) missing three limbs? Rumsfeld said ‘you go to war with what you have.’ But then, he couldn’t even protect the Pentagon on 911…former CEO of Searle Pharmaceuticals that he was. Wars have long echoes. -JM. Read the below…

Another hack journalist intent on making a name for himself in the establishment media peanut gallery is the latest to spuriously attack presidential candidate Ron Paul, making completely baseless claims that the Congressman is a racist and a white supremacist sympathizer, going as far as comparing Dr. Paul to Charles Manson.
On Tucker Carlson’s MSNBC show yesterday, The New Republic‘s Jamie Kirchick ludicrously claimed that Ron Paul personally called Martin Luther King a “gay pedophile,” and stuffed 20 years’ worth of “Ron Paul” newsletters full of “racist, anti-semitic, homophobic invective.”
Kirchick also spewed idiotic claims that Paul “called black people animals,” and spoke at a “secessionist conference” in a New Republic article.
(Article continues below)
Notice that when Carlson asks Kirchick if he ever heard Ron Paul make a racist remark he says “No.” But then he announces: “BUT,” he DID attend a conference on secession in 1995!!
Did Ron Paul attend such an event? Seemingly yes. Does this make him a racist? NO.
A fellow attendee and speaker at that same conference, Thomas DiLorenzo, explains just how off the mark the ignorant hack is with this attempted slander:
The proceedings of the conference, which the pimply-faced youth is obviously ignorant of, were published as a book: Secession, State and Liberty, edited by Dr. David Gordon, whose Ph.D. from UCLA is in the field of intellectual history. It includes essays by scholars and professors from Emory University, Florida State University, UNLV, University of Montreal, University of South Carolina, and even a lawyer from Buffalo, New York. It was published a few years after the Soviet empire imploded as the result of eleven separate acts of peaceful secession, which made it especially relevant to social scientists.
In fact, secession remains a lively topic of academic discourse, something that the PFY is obviously unfamiliar with. A few weeks ago a secession conference sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities was held in Charleston, South Carolina, featuring some thirty historians and legal scholars. In little Jamie Kirchick’s empty mind, the NEH must necessarily be a hotbed of pro-slavery sentiment. (A friend in academe tells me that the participants in this conference spanned the ideological spectrum from left/liberal to Marxist).
Only an ignorant conspiracy theorist like Jamie Kirchick would assume that anyone who studies secession in a scholarly way is necessarily some kind of KKK-sympathizing kook. He knows that Ron Paul will not sue him for defamation because he is a public figure. I, however, am not a public figure.
Tucker Carlson himself acted as if he was somewhat shocked to hear the claims, like he did not know what his own guest was going to talk about. However it is clear that this was another pathetic attempt to smear Ron Paul by the same guy who turned up to a Ron Paul event with hookers and a pimp claiming they were fellow supporters.
Carlson also claims that Ron Paul campaign has recently “apologized on the phone” to him personally about comments made in the same newsletters referred to by Kirchick, something that the campaign would have no interest in doing given that they have already publicly distanced themselves from the writings, 99.9% of which are not written by Ron Paul and have no direct connection to him whatsoever.
Ron Paul’s voluminous writings are freely available to anyone who wishes to look. There is not a scintilla of evidence in any of his personal writings that he is in any way shape or form racist. Kirchick knows this full well, but has hand-picked a dozen or so statements from articles not written by Ron Paul to launch a vitriolic guilt by association slur.
Ron Paul is a gentleman, he has served in Congress over the course of three decades and his record does not have one blip against it. Anyone who has followed Paul for any modicum of time will tell you that to imagine him calling Martin Luther King a “gay pedophile” is the most patently ridiculous claim that could possibly be made.
As one respondent to the New Republic hit piece comments, “That’s the problem Ron Paul presents to those trying to smear him, you have to go back 20 years and try to twist somebody else’s words to try to make him look bad. With all the other candidates you can just look at what they themselves have actually been doing in the recent past and even the present.”
Guilt by association is the only recourse for those who savage the Congressman in search of a pat on the head and a job offer from one of the corporate media monsters. Last time out we had to debunk a similar flailing attack when it was claimed that Ron Paul was a secret Neo-Con because he once co-authored a book with someone who went on to become a Neo-Con fifteen years later.
The New York Times was forced to issue a retraction when they printed an article that claimed Ron Paul regularly met with white supremacists at a restaurant in Arlington, Va., a completely baseless accusation intended to smear the Congressman as a racist sympathizer. In light of the fact that numerous people are now considering suing Kirchick for his libelous garbage, we also expect a swift retraction.
The key to unraveling Kirchick’s smear is the complete inaccuracy of his central claim – the contention that Ron Paul hates Martin Luther King and advocates the comments of others who inferred that King was a sexual pervert and a pedophile.
If Kirchick had bothered to actually check Ron Paul’s voting record (real research doesn’t seem to be his forte) he would have learned that on one of the very rare occasions when the Congressman has voted for something that is not explicitly authorized in the Constitution, it was for America to recognize Martin Luther King day as a public holiday.
“In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he voted to authorize the continuing operation of NASA and to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on the third Monday in January,” writes Politifact.com.
Why would the Congressman, who is loathe to vote for anything that isn’t authorized by the Constitution, go to such lengths to break his consistency in celebrating the contribution of Martin Luther King to society if he thought the legendary activist was a “gay pedophile”.
The fact that Ron Paul has also made numerous public first person references, as oppose to 20-year-old articles written by other people, to Martin Luther King being one of his “heroes” is also ignored by Kirchick.
Most of these lies stem from an article that was written by one of Paul’s aides fifteen years ago about crime figures and black people in LA – another feeble jab that fizzled into nothing.
Indeed, the very publishers of many of the newsletters that Kirchick alludes to in his hit piece publicly admitted six months ago that Ron Paul had no influence over their content.
“Ron Paul didn’t know about those comments, or know they were written under his name until much later when they were brought to his attention. There were several issues that went out with comments that he would not ordinarily make. He was angry when he saw them,” said one publisher.
Since Ron Paul is as clean as a whistle and unlike Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani has no skeletons in the closet, the establishment media are forced to resort to the dirtiest trick in the book – guilt by association.
This was not the only appearance the shifty eyed New Republic hack Kirchick made yesterday.
He also appeared on the albino vampire John Gibson’s radio show to spew more of his vile lies. In his introduction Gibson admits to having “been after Ron Paul because I think he is a 9/11 truther”. The pair then go on to declare the Congressman an outright racist once more on the back of the same newsletters.
Kirchick states, “From 1978 onwards practically every issue is devoted to conspiracy mongering about the Trilateral Commission, first of all when someone mentions the Trilateral Commission in nefarious terms you know they are a little kooky.”
Excuse me? This is the same Trilateral Commission founded by David Rockefeller who wrote in his own memoirs that he and his family have been conspiring against the United States. He expresses his hostility to Americans who seek “first and foremost to serve the national interests of the United States.” Is any American citizen who opposes this “a little kooky”?
Kirchick continues, “The Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderbergers, I mean that’s like a real out there conspiracy theory”.
No sir, the notion that the Bilderberg Group does not exist and does not play a major role in policy making and lobbying was dispensed with by even the most aggressive mainstream hacks years ago.
What have these issues got to do with allegations of racism against Ron Paul anyway? It becomes clear that Kirchick is grasping at thin air.
The pair then go on to make several extreme slurs against Ron Paul, even comparing the Congressman to Charles Manson, by citing quotes they falsely claim are written by him. They even suggest that when Ron Paul talks about “the international banking elite” he is talking about Jews and is therefore anti-Semitic.
They throw in quotes from material unconnected to Ron Paul and mix it up with selected Paul quotations which are taken completely out of context, such as past criticism of Israeli military aggression. The disgusting pair end by calling Paul a “Dirty Bigot” and “Nazi scum”.
Kirchick also refers to the farcical “Stormfront Donation” saga which forced the New York Times to issue a retraction last month admitting to several errors in a post it published which carried assertions that Ron Paul meets regularly with white supremacist groups. Kirchick should be forced to issue the same retraction, Gibson and Carlson should also be brought to task for allowing known lies and smear to be broadcast on their shows.
Lew Rockwell has provided a succinct background on The New Republic in wake of the smear attempts:
TNR has a long and checkered history of pro-fascism, pro-communism, and pro-new dealism. Founded to promote the rotten progressive movement of militarism, central banking, income taxation, centralization, and regulation of business, it naturally hates and fears the Ron Paul Revolution. The mag is also famous for having published a slew of entirely made-up articles by Stephen Glass, which it passed off as non-fiction. Through the 1950s it was an important magazine, of significant if baleful influence, but it long ago declined in circulation and significance, like all DC deadtree ops. Long close to Beltway libertarians, for whom its politically correct left-neoconism is fine and dandy, TNR once published a cover story literally comparing Ross Perot to Adolf Hitler when he was running for president. That is the publication’s style–hysterical smears aimed at political enemies.
Ron Paul is a hero. He stands for uncompromised integrity and unwavering adherence to the core principles of the Constitution. He also represents real Republican principals, which is why he is coming under so much attack from neoconservatives and their bootlicking media whores, who rightly recognize him and the reach of his message as the greatest threat to their usurpation of the Republican party and the values of America as a whole.
RON PAUL’S RESPONSE
Ron Paul has already responded to these ridiculous accusations and slammed them as political haymaking to coincide with the New Hampshire primary.
“The quotations in The New Republic article are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed. I have never uttered such words and denounce such small-minded thoughts. In fact, I have always agreed with Martin Luther King, Jr. that we should only be concerned with the content of a person’s character, not the color of their skin. As I stated on the floor of the U.S. House on April 20, 1999: ‘I rise in great respect for the courage and high ideals of Rosa Parks who stood steadfastly for the rights of individuals against unjust laws and oppressive governmental policies.’
This story is old news and has been rehashed for over a decade. It’s once again being resurrected for obvious political reasons on the day of the New Hampshire primary. When I was out of Congress and practicing medicine full-time, a newsletter was published under my name that I did not edit. Several writers contributed to the product. For over a decade, I have publicly taken moral responsibility for not paying closer attention to what went out under my name.”
Another clue to Kirchick’s completely disingenuous agenda is the fact that he approached Alex Jones to be interviewed for the New Republic article by claiming he was “doing a story on the momentum behind the Ron Paul for President campaign”. In a telephone conversation he also claimed that the article “wasn’t a hit piece” when repeatedly asked by Jones.
At the end of Kirchick’s piece, he takes an Alex Jones quote astronomically out of context by claiming Alex says the elite want to develop themselves into “superhuman” computer hybrids able to “travel throughout the cosmos”. The fact that Jones himself is paraphrasing the dreams of transhumanists in clarifying their agenda as bizarre and elitist is not explained by Kirchick who, in attributing the quote directly to Jones, attempts to associate him with its incredulity.
As one respondent accurately summarizes, “So where’s the evidence? Like some photocopies of the actual newsletters? I’m not familiar with any of Ron Paul’s newsletters but I am familiar with Alex Jones and your description of Endgame is completely spun so it puts your entire article into question. Alex Jones has interviewed many famous figures that do not share his views. So what? If you can’t present some evidence then how do we know that you haven’t taken these excerpts completely out of context? It’s hard to trust any attack on Ron Paul’s character coming from a Neoconservative publication like yours that vigorously defends any criticism of the precious war in Iraq and “global war on terror”. Furthermore, it’s very difficult to align your allegations with the character of Ron Paul that is presented in his countless speeches, interviews and books. Not a trace of any bigotry and he has many times directly attacked the idea of collectivism that leads to bigotry.”
We invite readers to share their views on Mr. Kirchick’s article by e mailing him at james.kirchick@gmail.com.

NOT ALL WHOPPERS ARE BURGERS
PART 1 of 2
By Jon Christian Ryter
January 9, 2008
NewsWithViews.com
In one of most egregious speeches made by President Bill Clinton before an African American congregation while he was in office, was the one in which he claimed to have personally witnessed the Ku Klux Klan bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 15, 1963. Clinton, who would have been 17 years old at the time, was in Hope, Arkansas when the attack happened. Not all whoppers are hamburgers. But this type of whopper is more popular with political candidates than those from Burger King.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney claimed that he watched his father (former Michigan governor George Romney) march with Martin Luther King. Yet the Romney Campaign has been unable to offer any evidence to support Romney’s claim. Recently he admitted the statement was “figurative.” (The word “figurative” is an upscale millionaire’s synonym for “lie,” or for “…he woulda if he coulda.” In poor man’s rhetoric, a lie is simply a lie. You either did it or you didn’t. Marching with Martin Luther King in the spirit is not marching with Martin Luther King. It’s claiming you did something you didn’t do. That’s the type of thing America’s only black president, Bill Clinton, claimed to have done and, time after time when he got caught in his lie, the media simply gave him a pass.
Over the weekend someone started a rumor which purportedly came from the Thompson camp. Fred Thompson, according to the rumor, supposedly said if he didn’t do well in Iowa he was going to throw in the towel and back McCain. Sen. It would appear on the surface that the McCain camp wouldn’t have started the rumor. Huckabee? He was the big winner in Iowa, logic would also suggest that the Huckster was not too concerned about Thompson who was not making enough waves in Iowa to swamp anyone in that race. That only left Romney since he appeared to be the only candidate who was concerned about Thompson when you look at the national numbers.
Or at least, that’s what it was supposed to look like. In reality, the plot was hatched between Huckabee and McCain to “knock off Romney” in New Hampshire. The plot appears to have been hatched by Huckabee to get rid of the rich guy, making it easier for him to knock of McCain on Super Tuesday where his only real competition would be Thompson and McCain. Romney, unfortunately helped create the appeaance of guilt by jumping in and hiring Thompson’s Maryland Campaign director the morning the rumor surfaced. Upset by the report, Thompson angrily responded that he was in the race until the last day. I suspect Thompson—like me and most people who watch the race through the spectacles of logic and not candidate passion—thought Romney was the logical pick as the guy who started the Iowa rumors. But the rumor-monger was “honest” Mike Huckabee.
Rev. Huckabee should be smart enough to know that once he gets into the real world where people are not only computer literate but actually research the candidates instead of buying the media hype, Huckabee is going to be revealed as the social liberal parasite he’s been for years. For some reason, politicians believe they can deny their recorded words and accuse their detractors of making up stories about them when their past inconsistencies are dredged up for all the world to see and hear. Huckabee won Iowa because respected but misguided Christian pastors forgot that politics is about politics, and chose to reduce the politics of Iowa into a Baptist-Mormon debate. Looking only at those two men—and their moral character and integrity—I think if God was voting in Iowa, He would have cast his vote for Mitt Romney and not Mike Huckabee.
Myself, had I been voting in Iowa, I would have cast my vote for Fred Thompson. In my mind, he has the type of character president’s require. As a US Senator, Thompson made a career-changing decision to expose Chinagate and the financing of the 1996 Clinton-Gore Campaign by the People’s Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China.
When he began his investigation, Thompson thought he was dealing only with a dishonest president, his ambitious wife (who is still has a penchant for illegal foreign money) and a dishonest Vice President who was independently taking money from Chinese Intelligence from 1988 when he battled Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis for the Democratic nomination. Gore dropped out of the race with a massive campaign debt. He received a contribution from a communist agent, Maria Hsia and was invited to go on a fact-finding trip to Indonesia funded by Mochtar Riady (who also funded the Clintons in 1984). Gore’s trip to Indonesia included a stopover in Taiwan where he visited Master Hsing Yun of the Fo Kuang Shan Buddhist Monastery (which was the headquarters for Red China’s spy system in Taiwan). The Thompson Committee Report noted that when Gore returned from Taiwan Maria Hsia began doing fund-raisers for Gore to retire his debt. It was in Taiwan where the Buddhist monastery “community outreaches” were created to provide laundered Chinese contributions for Gore’s planned presidential run in 1992.
Much to Thompson’s surprise, when he launched his investigation, he ran into as much opposition from Republicans as he did from Democrats. The Chinese government’s funding of liberal Senators (both Democrat and Republican) through Sen. Alan Cranston [D-CA] began in 1984. Cranston was the recipient of millions of dollars of laundered Chinese yuan as the head the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The Chinese were determined to defeat Ronald Reagan in 1984 and increase the social progressives’ grip on both Houses of Congress. (As a reporter prior to World War II, Cranston authored an abridged version of Mein Kampf—deleting Hitler’s anti-Semitism to make him appear human. Hitler sued him for copyright infringement and won. In 1945 Cranston, who was now more socialist than fascist, wrote a book entitled “The Killing of Peace,” arguing the United States was responsible for all world tension because they refused to join the League of Nations.) Financed by Chinese money, Cranston jumped into the presidential race in 1984, becoming the first announced candidate in 1983. He lost the race for the nomination to Walter Mondale who, with running mate Patricia Schroeder. lost to Reagan in the biggest electoral upset since James Monroe won all but one electoral vote against John Quincy Adams in 1816.

Thompson exposed the graft in the Clinton Administration, but only the Washington Times, Insight on the News, American Spectator and Newsmax magazine gave the story full court press. They became the foundation of what Hillary Clinton labeled the “vast right wing conspiracy.” The mainstream liberal media lightly covered the Thompson Committee hearings and the evidence produced by Larry Klayman who was, at that time, the general counsel of Judicial Watch. But, as usual, the liberal media covered the story like they cover any story that makes their side look evil. In the end, while they had enough evidence to convict the Clintons of accepting money from a foreign government, Congress decided to impeach the president over a semen-stained blue dress. Thompson lost his taste for the good ol boys on the Hill and decided not to seek a second term in the US Senate.
Why is he running for President? Because when you want to fix a system that is broken, you can only fix it from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue since the keys to the bureaucracy are held not by Congress but in the Oval Office which tacitly controls it since the unelected 4th branch of government is part of the Executive Branch of government. In actuality, the bureaucracy is more controlled by the views of the Council on Foreign Relations than by their constitutional bosses—the Secretaries who are appointed by the President but must kiss the royal behinds of Senators in order to be confirmed for their jobs. That’s why so many of the second tier bureaucrats seem to float so easily from Democrat to Republican administrations and, effortlessly, back to Democratic regimes.
Hillary Clinton, who is for-and-against pulling troops from Iraq—depending on her audience—has a leaflet circulating in New Hampshire that promises that “…Hillary will begin immediate phased withdrawal [from Iraq] with a definite timetable to bring our troops home.” Yet, in Iowa, the Clinton rhetoric was slightly different. In Iowa the Senator did not think it’s wise to commit to bringing US troops home before the end of her second term. (What you can steal once, you can steal more easily a second time.) Hillary’s mistake was promising the voters an “experienced Clinton,” and, at the same time, something “new” in Washington. It was an oxymoron Iowa just didn’t understand.
She came in third. I was wishing that Dennis Kucinich beat her, too. That would have made Iowa worth the TV coverage.
For all of you history buffs, when President Bill Clinton sent US troops to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, he promised that he would have the troops home by Christmas. Twelve Christmases have passed and the troops are still there. Yet you don’t hear the antiwar groups complaining about those troops, or the troops who have been along the 38th parallel in Korea for 57 years.
Presidential candidate Joe Biden claims to his supporters that, in 1979, he led a delegation of 19 senators who negotiated the START II agreement with Leonid Brezhnev. (It was actually a follow-up on the SALT II meetings after the Treaty was signed,) Biden was part of a senatorial delegation, not the State Department delegation that actually negotiated the treaties.) Biden’s group did not meet with Brezhnev, but with Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin whose job it was to meet with nuisance bureaucrats. And, there were only six senators in the group, not 19.
What Biden and his group were doing was haggling with the Soviets over a couple of minor points before the Democratically-controlled Senate would agree to ratify the Salt II Treaty that was already signed by Brezhnev and Jimmy Carter. When Biden returned to Washington, the Senate ratified the Treaty which was never signed by the Soviets—even though the United States abided by its terms. It was not until George W. Bush took office that anyone realized that the Soviets had never signed it. Since a one-sided treaty is not a treaty, Bush announced he was going to proceed with Reagan’s nuclear umbrella. At that point Vladimir Putin hurriedly signed the treaty that the Soviets had not observed for 22 years. As it tuirned out, Joe Biden’s committee and the worst president in the history of the United States, Jimmy Carter, signed a one-sided treaty that obligated only the United States to reduce its nuclear defense system. Yup, Biden’s really qualified to lead the nation. In my view, he’s barely qualified to handle a Whopper—the hamburger.
The least qualified—or rather, the only completely unqualified candidate for President—former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, noted to the media that he is “…probably one of the four or five best known Americans in the world.” If Giuliani believes being well known qualifies him to be the leader of the free world, then he is obligated to believe that Paris Hilton and Britany Spears—both of whom are much more well known than him—will also be qualified to be President if they don’t die of drug overdoses before they reach 36-years of age since the average idiot on the street will recognize their names before Giuliani’s. Considering only political people, Giuliani still falls far below almost every GOP candidate on the recognition scale—even Ron Paul who, prior to this election season, was a virtually unknown Texas congressman who was known only by the anti-IRS, anti-Fed far right conservatives who remembered him as a renegade Libertarian presidential candidate in 1988—whose campaign went no-where fast.
This time around, Paul, who is polled 11% in Iowa, and is polling around 8% nationwide, still polls better than Giuliani who is polling around 6%. Paul will outlast Giuliani only because when you only came along for the ride, you’re going to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts because it fills the scrap book with pleasant memories the grandchildren will enjoy after you’re gone. “the real FDA job, as prioritized by top FDA management, is to protect the sales of Big Pharma and create new market opportunities for Big Pharma and Big Biotech while using Americans for experimental purposes”
By Byron J. Richards, CCN

NewsWithViews.com
The New Year brings a surprise for the FDA – a lawsuit filed by Public Citizen seeking to force the FDA to do its pretended job of protecting American citizens from the dangers of drugs. Of course, the real FDA job, as prioritized by top FDA management, is to protect the sales of Big Pharma and create new market opportunities for Big Pharma and Big Biotech while using Americans for experimental purposes.
The current suit revolves around the dangers of toxic fluoride-containing antibiotics. The two brand names involved are Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin and Bayer’s Cipro. The German company, Bayer, has a long and colorful history of injuring Americans while its executives laugh all the way to the bank.
These dangerous antibiotics cause ruptured and damaged tendons. Public Citizen had petitioned the FDA for a clear black box warning, rather than a warning buried deep in the fine print that no person fighting an illness would have the energy to read. The FDA refused to force the drug companies to make the warning clear, knowing that such a warning would reduce sales of the drugs and open the companies to lawsuits by those who have been injured.
Now the FDA will get a chance to defend its pro Big Pharma anti-American position in court. Happy New Year, FDA. Hopefully this is the start of a new trend.
Here are some of the other top headlines featuring the ineptitude going on in our health care system.
Pfizer – Lipitor Suit Moves Forward while Officials Flee the Law in Nigeria
Lipitor for lowering cholesterol (a statin) is the best selling drug of all time. A newly unveiled lawsuit based on information provided by a top former Pfizer exec now turned whistleblower is showing that this stroke of marketing genius was based on blatantly illegal marketing and pushing the drug on Americans who really did not need it. As the poster child for the statin scam Pfizer has likely damaged the health of millions of Americans. Now there is an attempt to hit them where it counts, in the pocket book.
Meanwhile, the morality of Pfizer continues to shine around the world as three top executives try to flee the law in Nigeria after killing and injuring children while conducting drug experiments. Such brutal experimentation in third world countries is common practice by Big Pharma, where regulation is lax and bad results commonly don’t show up in the scientific literature and are not included as part of the drug’s history when it is presented to the FDA for approval. Pfizer is facing 2 billion in damages in the Nigerian case and some of its top executives are literally on the run from the law. Hopefully the judge on the Lipitor case will take note of the flight risk and hold top Pfizer execs without bail.
The recent Lipitor ads featuring the inventor of the artificial heart, Dr. Robert Jarvik, are now drawing the attention of lawmakers looking into the illegal nature of these ads.
Corn – When is Food No Longer Food?
Farmers growing corn for ethanol are no longer farmers in any traditional sense; they are part of the oil industry. It is now being reported that the millions of pounds of nitrogen-based fertilizer needed to grow the corn are entering the Mississippi and going out into the gulf wherein they create a 7,900-square-mile “dead zone” void of oxygen wherein fish, crabs and shrimp suffocate and hostile algae grow.
Idiots on Capital Hill, with the full support of the Bush administration, just passed a bill that will dramatically boost ethanol use, making this problem much worse for years to come.
There are other side effects in the agricultural market, such as driving up the cost of food as it is now more expensive to feed animals. Then there is the issue that this means big profits for genetically modified seed producers like Monsanto. The issue of the safety of GMO foods like corn has never been verified and is an incredibly dangerous experiment on our entire food supply and the health of humans.
Maybe it is a blessing in disguise that corn can be used for fuel. It is no longer safe to eat. Let’s just hope that winds don’t blow too much corn pollen into the neighboring crops and cross-contaminate what is left of a real food supply.
Dietary Supplement Trade Group Promotes Food Coloring Use
The International Alliance for Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) is actively supporting the use of food coloring in dietary supplements, guidelines that are being written up for the proposed Codex guidelines that pose a grave threat to free access to dietary supplements in America.
“Our aim is to ensure that the adopted levels are both safe for consumers and consistent with those widely used by the global food supplement industry,” said David Pineda, IADSA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs.
Excuse me Mr. Pinhead, food coloring comes from coal tar and is a poison. It has no business being in dietary supplements in any amount. The only people who put it in dietary supplements are big drug companies that make vitamins (Bayer – One-A-Day and Wyeth – Centrum). I wouldn’t put food-color containing vitamins in my body even if they were the last supplements left on earth – which is the goal of Codex. It is obvious that IADSA and Codex are nothing but European drug company efforts to control the sales of nutrients in America and around the world, ensuring that garbage synthetic vitamins are sold as natural and junk chemicals are allowed in products.
When will the traitors in the U.S. trade groups wake up. The Natural Products Association (NPA, formerly NNFA) is a member of IADSA and has supported the IADSA/Big Pharma positions. NPA is leading its members down a booby-trapped path that has nothing to do with the principles of natural health. NPA is failing to warn its members regarding the extreme dangers CODEX poses to Americans.
Spotlight Shines on Ineptitude of Medical Sinus Treatments
The Journal of the American Medical Association has just published a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study showing that the use of antibiotics and nasal steroids is ineffective at treating sinusitis.
Each year there are 25 million visits to a doctor in the United States to treat sinus problems; the overwhelming majority are viral in nature. Despite repeated warnings of germ resistance from antibiotic prescription overuse, U.S. physicians still prescribe an antibiotic at least 85 percent of the time. Now there is iron-clad scientific proof that this strategy does not work.
What is not discussed in this study is the rampant epidemic of Candida Albicans that is caused by this flagrant malpractice of medicine. Physicians routinely cause life-long infections with Candida Albicans which seriously deteriorate the health and quality of life of their patients who receive repeating doses of antibiotics.
It is now also quite clear that repeated doses of antibiotics in infants is a cause of the epidemic of asthma in children (mostly as a side effect of Candida infection).
It is becoming painfully obvious to everyone that medical doctors cannot be trusted to do a competent job and are guilty of practicing medicine with a useless license. Thankfully, many natural remedies can easily take care of sinus problems without damaging a person’s health for life.
Common Diabetes Drug Causes Bone Loss – Medical Profession in a Funk
The commonly used and much maligned diabetes drug, Avandia, just took another spill down the stairs. A new mouse study shows that the drug weakens bones and is likely to cause osteoporosis in the millions of users in the United States. The drug was shown to get directly in the way of healthy bone function, causing accelerated bone loss and slowed bone growth.
Senior study author Ron Evans, not wanting to step on GlaxoSmithKline’s toes, had this to say about Avandia “We do not recommend that people stop their treatment. You must balance the benefits against the complications.”
So how do the millions of people taking this drugs balance the risks against the benefits? Well maybe they go to the FDA website where they will find that in May the FDA warned of “a potentially significant increase in the risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths in patients taking Avandia.” Yes, that is a 43% increased risk.
So now we have a drug that causes serious bone disease and heart disease. The FDA has left it on the market so that you the consumer and your too-busy doctor can sort out if this poison is right for you.
The drug-pushing quick-fix paradigm of Western Medicine, existing almost solely to prop up the profits of multi-national drug companies and rape the American public of wealth, is a scam gone wild.
Doctors are overworked and generally inept at fixing anything without drugs, especially a complex and labor-intensive problem like diabetes. Consumers are naive to think that years of poor choices and a polluted food supply can be fixed by drugs.
Diabetes is a project. There are no quick fixes. Individuals must be consistent with many healthy habits if they are to have a chance of recovering their health.

Marine Ex-Recruiters Say Higher-Ups Share Blame
5 men say use of stand-ins to take tests was an established tactic
By Dane Schiller, Houston Chronicle
Five former Marine recruiters punished for fraudulently enlisting recruits from the Houston area said they were part of a web operating with tacit approval of some superiors.
The men confirmed they helped would-be recruits sneak past an exhaustive test by using a tactic established before they’d joined the Corps, served in Iraq or hit the streets as recruiters.
“I love the Marine Corps; I don’t want to be spitting on the Marine Corps,” said a former sergeant, who said he left the service after seven years to avoid facing military justice and the possibility of a bad-conduct discharge.
Eight others were removed from recruiting duty, according to Marine Corps officials, and were handed punishments including fines.
“The people in charge of me while on recruiting duty didn’t stand up for me,” he continued.
The scandal comes as the Marine Corps and other military services are under increasing pressure to find recruits as wars continue in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Marines are aiming to bulk up from about 184,000 troops to 202,000 by September.
The former sergeant acknowledged his own actions were improper but insisted higher-ranking Marines share the blame.
The Marine Corps said late Tuesday that a Marine with supervisory responsibilities over some of the disciplined recruiters was recently removed from recruiting duties, but it remains to be seen whether he will face any charges.
A staff sergeant “has been relieved of his recruiting duties and has been assigned administrative duties,” said Capt. Beatriz Yarrish, a spokeswoman for the 8th Marines Corps District, which is based in Fort Worth and includes all of Texas and other areas.
“The investigation with regard to (the sergeant) has been completed, and the commanding officer is currently deciding what course of action he will pursue.”
Yarrish wouldn’t share details of the case.
Not implicated at first
All were apparently snared in an investigation that began in the spring and was made public in November after the Houston Chronicle learned nine Marine recruiters were snared for using stand-in substitutes to take a military entrance exam for potential recruits who might not otherwise qualify for service.
During the initial inquiry none of the nine disciplined recruiters implicated their superiors in the scam, said Capt. Carlos Sotomayor, who investigated the recruiters last April through June.
Any violation of the rules was unacceptable, Sotomayor said, and the recruiters had the chance to tell what they knew.
“We teach them the right way,” he said. “If they choose to do it the wrong way, the Marine Corps will hold them accountable.”
The Marine Corps punished four recruiters nationwide in 2006 for testing irregularities, said Maj. Wesley Hayes of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command in Virginia.
“It is extremely rare that these incidents happen,” said Hayes.
The Marines are not alone in such problems.
In an entrance-exam scandal involving the Army National Guard in Arizona, test examiner Christine Thomas was sentenced to probation in July 2007 for a scam in which she conspired with recruiters to falsify results for about 70 applicants, according to court documents.
The Department of Defense is developing a system relying on electronic fingerprint readers as part of an effort to prevent potential recruits from using test takers to stand in for them.
The original investigation that snared the nine Houston-area recruiters was launched when someone noticed a signature on a test form didn’t match with a signature on other recruiting documents, Sotomayor said.
Marine officials would not disclose the time period during which the stand-in test takers were used.
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, known as the ASVAB, is a lengthy test used to place recruits in military jobs to which they are best suited.
Results could determine whether a person meets a minimum threshold to enter the service, as well as whether that person marches and fires a weapon, sits at a desk or takes up other duties.
Unsure how widespread
The Marine Corps declined to release the names of the recruiters or discuss specific details of the scheme, which resulted in eight recruiters being disciplined, a ninth leaving the service, and an unclear number of people entering the military based on test scores that weren’t their own.
Although officials said they are unsure how widespread the practice was or where the recruiters learned of the technique, the fraud was traced to at least 15 incidents that went through the Military Entrance Processing Station in downtown Houston.
Of the nine recruiters, four worked at the Memorial City substation; two in Baybrook; two in Houston; and one in Lake Jackson, according to the Marines.
“We have pursued all individuals involved in the incident,” said Sgt. Robert Jones, a public affairs spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruiting Station headquarters in Houston, which includes the men’s superiors.
Yarrish said Marines who served as enlisted supervisors at the recruiting substations and their supervisory office when stand-in test takers were used have been advised not to talk to the news media at this time. A Chronicle request to interview them was denied.
‘Wink, wink, nod, nod’
Five former recruiters contacted by the Chronicle confirmed stand-in test takers were used with the approval of higher-ups. Two who spoke at length asked their names not be published to avoid possible retribution.
Interviewed separately, they said they wanted to make it clear they didn’t act alone or without approval.
The man who left the Marine Corps said he was a recruiter for more than two years and put about 65 people in the service but used test takers six times.
“It was one of those, ‘wink, wink, nod, nod’ — they knew,” he said. “It was not an isolated thing — it is something that was going on for years and they all knew about it.”
He said loyalty stopped him from reporting other Marines. The Marine Corps has declined to release any portion of its investigative report.
The other person who spoke with the Chronicle at length said he was fined and removed from recruiting duties but stayed in the service.
He recalled an incident in which a higher-ranking enlisted Marine said a “tester” was needed to get a recruit into the Corps.
When looking for a tester, sometimes they would find someone who had already been recruited and previously passed the test, or a friend or family member of a potential recruit, he said.
“I wouldn’t say it was ordered, but it was like, ‘Hey, this is the way things are done,’” the former recruiter said.
“If you are out there recruiting a lot, you are going to come across kids that this is the only push they need, and it is easy to do something,” said the Marine, noting that anyone who enters the Corps still has to complete boot camp and an advanced training school.

Afghan Civilians Were Killed Needlessly, Ex-Marine Testifies
By Paul von Zielbauer
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A former member of an elite Marine combat unit that operated last year in eastern Afghanistan testified Tuesday that his comrades appeared to have needlessly killed civilians after their convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomb.
Nathaniel Travers, a former Marine intelligence sergeant assigned to the 30-man Special Operations convoy that was patrolling on March 4 last year, testified in a military court here that a few marines fired at civilians and other unarmed noncombatants after the suicide bomber struck.
No marines have been charged with a crime in the episode. The hearing was held to determine whether troops had violated the laws of war.
The three judges on the Marine Corps court of inquiry are examining the actions of two officers who led the elite unit, Company F, Second Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. They are Maj. Fred C. Galvin, the company commander, and Capt. Vincent J. Noble, the platoon leader.
Shortly after the March 4 shootings near Jalalabad, Company F was ordered to leave Afghanistan by Lt. Gen. Frank Kearney of the Army, the commander at the time of all Special Operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
Weeks later, an Army Special Operations commander in Afghanistan publicly apologized to the families of 19 people who he said had been unjustifiably killed by members of the Marine unit.
But the Army apology, given before military investigators had concluded their inquiry, was later condemned by senior Marine commanders as inappropriate and premature.
Mr. Travers, the first witness to testify, said the unit’s trip from its base at Jalalabad to the Pakistani border and back was uneventful until a minivan detonated near the convoy’s second Humvee. After the blast, Mr. Travers said, he heard gunfire and saw bodies in at least two vehicles as the Marine convoy sped away.
Only a few gunners in the heavily armed convoy fired, he said, until Captain Noble radioed a command to the entire convoy to stop firing.
The account by Mr. Travers, who left the Marines last year, contrasts sharply with those given by the American military and the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.
The commission, which conducted its own inquiry, said marines had fired indiscriminately at pedestrians and people in cars, buses and taxis over a 10-mile stretch of road after the attack. No marines were seriously wounded in the suicide bombing.

Will Work for Taxes |
|
|
“Instead of the town saying, ‘Oh, my God! What kind of ravenous vampires have we become?’ and lowering their…damned taxes, ‘The town is pushing a program that would let seniors work part-time…to help pay off some of their property taxes.’”
From AP, we can’t believe our eyes when we read, “Plan Would Let Seniors Work to Pay Taxes”. It seems that in Greenburgh, N.Y., the damned local government is eating the financial guts out of its citizens. For example, a 76-year old woman named Audrey Davison lives alone, gets a $620 Social Security check per month ($7,440 a year), and has to pay $12,000 a year in property taxes on the house that she has lived in for 43 years! Instead of the town saying, “Oh, my God! What kind of ravenous vampires have we become?” and lowering their damned spending and the damned taxes, “The town is pushing a program that would let seniors work part-time, for $7 an hour, to help pay off some of their property taxes.” Some bozo named Scott Parkin, who for some reason is the spokesman for the National Council on Aging, said that the program “sounded interesting” to him, “as long as it wasn’t limited to menial work.” Apparently, easy “make-work” labor for old people is insulting, but gulag-style, back-breaking forced-labor is okay! With whips! Hahaha! “And if they fall under the load, grind them into pet food and take their houses!” He doesn’t answer my question directly, but with a little clever editing, I can make it appear that way when I now insert his quote, “It’s certainly in line with what we stand for, keeping seniors involved in work or volunteering as a part of healthy aging.” Hahaha! Forcing old, sick people to work to pay their taxes is “in line with” what the National Council on Aging stands for! Hahaha! Even more astonishing, he went on to say that he would, “Eventually…like to see the county and the local school districts adopt similar plans!” I can’t believe what I am reading! I thought that I had misread it, but then he said, “If we got seniors working for the schools, there might be a more intergenerational feeling there”, and apparently with all the forced labor to do the work, “It might be easier to pass the school budgets.” JMR Wayne T. agrees with me when he says, “This is surely in the top 5 most horrible examples of Government abuse of its citizens I have ever seen. This is beyond Communism, this is serfdom.” In case you were wondering why in the world your own government would be trying to enslave you or kill you with inflation, the answer is not, “Because they are evil scumbags who hate you and who want to see you dead”, but because, as Daniel R. Amerman of InflationIntoWealth.com explains in his essay titled “Inflation Index Manipulation: Theft By Statistics”, the purpose of the government ruining your life, the dollar, and the economy of the USA is, “through the manipulation of both inflation and inflation indexes, the government can simultaneously repay existing government obligations at 15 cents on the dollar, while repaying inflation-protected promises (in full) at a mere 27 cents on the dollar.” I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, “Wow! What a scam! How can I get in on a little of that action?” The answer is, “Buy gold. Right now. Lots of it.” Well, not satisfied with my glib answer, he actually shows the effect of 10% inflation in prices, versus the government’s 3% increase in Social Security over a 19-year period from 2008 to 2027, which is particularly pertinent to you if you are planning on retiring in 2008 and living for another 19 years. Anyway, the bottom line is found, literally, on the bottom line of his chart, and it reads, I am sorry to say, “Beneficiary Loss to index ‘Management’: -73%”. Wow! In terms of buying power, you are going to love this… By the government lying to you about inflation so that they don’t have to pay you so much in Cost-Of-Living-Adjusted Social Security benefits for 19 years, the effect is that you can buy four things at the Dollar Store with your Social Security benefit right now, but at the end of 19 years you will be able to buy only one thing. Hahaha! “We’re from the government and we’re here to help you!” Hahahaha! Mr. Amerman asks, “Can you really fool all the people with a combination of inflation and inflation index manipulation? Some might say, ‘No way! People are way too smart for that, and the professors and media would quickly expose the fraud.’” Which I think is really funny because Ben Bernanke himself was the head of the economics department at Princeton, and not only did he NOT “quickly expose the fraud”, he said nothing, and is now the one committing the fraud! And don’t get me started on the criminal complicity of the government-lapdog media, as I really start getting steamed, and the next thing you know, I am quoting Thomas Jefferson about how we need a little revolution every generation or so, so that we can round up newspaper publishers and throw them, as an “extraordinary rendition”, into some stinking prison in some hell-hole country where the guards are sadistic and they will let me go into the cells and kick the living hell out of all of them whenever I am in the mood, which is pretty much whenever I think of their perfidy and treason and the misery and suffering they’ve caused, which is pretty much all of the time, which means I am going to need some steel-toed safety boots to prevent injury to myself! And it’s too late for Santa Claus this year! Mr. Amerman is aghast at the sudden appearance of the Vicious Nature Of The Mogambo (VNOTM), and trying to get back to some semblance of sanity and human decency, says, “The problem for retirees, inflation-indexed workers and general investors is that the above strategy works like a charm from a governmental perspective. Indeed it works better than any other alternative from a political perspective, as it allows much of the damage to be hidden behind statistics and economists, even as promises are legally kept, while being broken in substance.” Sort of like Bill Clinton famously declaring, “It all depends on how you define ‘is’” and The Mogambo saying, “I’ll pay you back!”; we all know there is a lie in there someplace. Mogambo sez: With all the losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index is now sporting a price-to-earnings ratio of 47. You have probably concluded by the way my face is ashen and my breath comes in ragged gasps that something is wrong, because this means that the price of the Dow would have to fall to half to bring the P/E ratio back to 23, which is also unnaturally high, and due to fall some more! And bonds? Hahaha! Bonds are so highly priced that they are literally yielding less than the rate of inflation as it is! But this is all not just wrong, it is more than wrong; it is insane! Hahaha! Insane! Insane, I tells ya! And that is why I cling to gold and silver with such force, measured in sheer firepower, which is the only sane thing left to do in a world gone mad! And that is not just me talking like I am such a smart guy who has figured out something new and exciting, but the sum total of all of the world’s history, which proves over and over and over again that everyone always turns to gold at the end. Always. The smart ones first. P.S.
