I just watched David Axelrod, the top ranking political advisor in the White House, and Robert Gibbs, the President’s spokesman on “Meet the Press” and “This Week” respectively. Neither of them was willing, even after repeated questioning, to offer a single negative word about Van Jones. Not one word. A 9/11 Truther and defender of Mumia-Abu Jamal is not radical enough for this White House to distance itself from the man in any way. Again and again, this White House has been offered chances to condemn the man’s views and they have willfully and quite deliberately refused.
Compare this to the controversy over Lani Guinier, President Clinton’s nominee to run the civil rights division at the Justice Department. When her views came to light, president Clinton disavowed her. “This has nothing to do with the political center,” Clinton insisted, “This is about my center.” Who would have guessed that there’s a case for saying Bill Clinton’s center had more intellectual integrity than Barack Obama’s?
Now, there’s reason to believe that Clinton was lying when he said he was unaware of her views when he picked her, but at least Clinton understood that he couldn’t claim to be a centrist and associate himself with her views if they became widely known.
Van Jones’ views are now widely known. And as far as anyone can tell reading the newspapers this morning or watching the Sunday shows, this White House and this President have nothing but praise for Jones and think he’s a fine, self-sacrificing, public servant who simply took one for the team.
I can’t think of a more succinct, discrete, example illuminating why Obama’s claims to centrism are a fraud.
Update: Oh and the conversation between Tom Brokaw and Tom Friedman about the lessons of Van Jones was a complete scandal. One of Friedman’s key take-aways from this whole affair is that too many people will self-censor themselves so they can get government jobs. What a tragedy that fewer people will support cop-killers and anti-American conspiracy groups because of poor Van Jones chilling effect on the culture.
Oh, and listening to Friedman and Brokaw disparage the internet as a useless news medium, makes them sound like cranky old monks lamenting that flash-in-the-pan printing press.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are taking a fresh look at one of the seedier Chicago stories from Barack and Michelle Obama’s past in ratcheting up the debate on Obamacare: the University of Chicago Hospital’s “Urban Health Initiative,” which Michelle Obama ran prior to her taking a leave of absence to campaign with her husband in 2007.
Because of the medical center’s location on the South Side of Chicago, a large number of indigent patients, without health insurance, were using the hospital’s emergency room for care. The nonprofit hospital, which in 2007 made more than $100 million in profits, largely because its beds and facilities were used by paying patients and those fully insured, paid Mrs. Obama to oversee the Urban Health Initiative program that identified indigent patients and then steered them to other area medical facilities. In fact, some of those profits came from Canadian citizens who traveled to the U.S. for medical procedures they could not get due to Canada’s restrictive national health care programs.
It wasn’t just Obama’s wife who was involved in creating the program. Senior White House adviser and political strategist, David Axelrod, and his PR firm in Chicago were retained to develop a media campaign to encourage area residents not to use University of Chicago as a medical facility. Senior White House official, and Obama friend, Valerie Jarrett served on the board of directors of the hospital and approved the plan for the Urban Health Initiative, and the hiring of Axelrod. And on the recommendation of then Senator Obama, Dr. Eric Whitaker, was named director of the Initiative in late 2007, after serving as the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, a job he got after Obama recommended him to then Gov. Rod Blagojevich via another Obama crony, Tony Rezko, a fund-raiser for Obama and now a convicted felon on federal corruption charges. Candidate Obama thought enough of the program to tout it as an example of how health care reform should be done….

Continuing President Obama’s outreach to Muslims, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett spoke at the Islamic Society of North America’s 46th Annual Convention. The Convention, themed “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” brought together thousands of Muslim Americans to our nation’s capital over the July 4th weekend.
The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) maintains that it is the largest Muslim American organization in the United States. It was founded more than forty years ago and aims to serve as a meeting place for people and ideas, while building bridges of understanding and cooperation.
In her remarks, Jarrett spoke of the importance of President Obama’s Cairo speech, where he emphasized that the United States and Muslim communities share fundamental values, such as justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of human beings.
She quoted the President:
“Since our founding, American Muslims have enriched the United States. They have fought in our wars, served in government, stood for civil rights, started businesses, taught at our universities, excelled in our sports arenas, won Nobel prizes, built our tallest building, and lit the Olympic torch.”
She continued by emphasizing that:
I will tell you, it is not always easy to identify American “Muslim” business leaders, scientists, artists, athletes, and so on. Not because there aren’t any, but because there are too many, and they are known for their talents and character – not simply their religion. This is a great thing. It is a reflection of the American dream, which is ultimately rooted in these values that we all share – values that are common to all of humanity. And just as we share common values, we also share common dreams – for security, progress, and opportunity.

With a scheduled hearing date looming Tuesday, Lucas Smith, the man who tried to sell an alleged Barack Obama Kenyan birth certificate on eBay, has filed court papers in a high-profile eligibility case insisting – under threat of perjury – that the Obama birth certificate in his possession is the genuine article.
Smith filed his affidavit through California attorney Orly Taitz, who has spearheaded several lawsuits challenging Barack Obama’s constitutional eligibility to serve as president, as part of a case that includes as plaintiff former presidential candidate Alan Keyes.
Taitz posted on her blog Smith’s declaration, which claims he obtained the alleged birth certificate from Coast General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya, and insists it’s real.
“The true and correct photocopy of the birth certificate obtained is attached to this affidavit as Exhibit A,” the declaration reads. “I declare, certify, verify, state and affirm under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the foregoing statements of fact and descriptions of circumstances and events are true and correct.”
Smith’s affidavit, which includes a copy of the certificate, has been filed with Judge David Carter of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Carter is scheduled to preside over a hearing on the case on Sept. 8.

An essay that appeared in Science magazine back in the 1960′s explains clearly and concisely the self-destructive path we’re on in our country today.
The essay, “The Tragedy of the Commons”, showed how individuals, rationally pursuing their self-interest, could unintentionally destroy their own common existence.
A simple problem is put forth: A common grazing field is available to a community of herders. Everyone brings his or her cows there. Because there is no clear ownership, the only incentive each herder has is to bring all of his cows to graze and consume as much as possible.

The web is covered in stink today because of a reporter for the Associated Press, Julie Jacobson, who photographed the death of a Marine whose legs had just been blown off. The kid was Joshua Bernard, a Lance Corporal of 21 years. When the photo appeared, Robert Gates, the Secretary of Defense [sic] furiously tried to get the AP to quash the photo. It didnt, to its everlasting credit. To quote one of many accounts on the web:

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights sent a letter in August to Attorney General Eric Holder, issuing a stinging rebuke to the Obama administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ).
A footnote in the letter criticized the DOJ’s dismissal of a Philadelphia voter intimidation case against a group called the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (NBP). The footnote called the DOJ’s voluntary dismissal of the case “even more corrosive to the rule of law than the dismissal without comment.”
The DOJ filed a lawsuit in January under the Voting Rights Act against the NBP and three of its members alleging the defendants intimidated voters last election day. The complaint, filed in federal court in Philadelphia, alleged that NBP members Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson were standing at a polling location wearing a military-style NBP uniform while Mr. Shabazz repeatedly brandished a “police-style baton weapon.”
The complaint said NBP Chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz confirmed that the placement of Mr. Shabazz and Mr. Jackson was part of a nationwide effort to deploy members at polling locations. The Justice Department initially sought an injunction to prevent any similar future actions.

I’ve caught some heat since election night when I made my first reference to the person whom I expected would turn out to be our first punk president.
As I noted in a related February column, there was plenty of pre-election justification for concern that the most powerful elected office in the world was about to be occupied by, at the very minimum, a “a young, inexperienced person” who lacks major elements of maturity one would expect in someone about to take on such a serious responsibility. Normally, these traits would be acquired in one’s life as a result of running a business, working in the private sector, serving in the military, or occasionally through wide-ranging experience in political office. Barack Obama brought in none of these four attributes.

Superintendent Says He’s Ordered Students To Watch Address
NEW ORLEANS — Orleans Parish School Board Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said Friday he’s ordering teachers, staff and students to watch President Obama’s address designated for schools on Sep. 8.
The directive impacts students and staff at four Orleans parish schools. And the Superintendent said he’s encouraging charter schools within the district to allow students to watch President’s address.
“Not only will the President’s speech address civic engagement and personal responsibility, both pillars of Louisiana education goals, it will also allow our students to participate in interdisciplinary lessons and discussions,” Kilbert said.
The President’s planned speech has raised some concern for students and parents who worry the speech will be used for political purposes. But Kilbert said he believes the President will delivered a focused speech aimed at preventing kids from dropping out of school.
Kilbert said teachers will be encouraged to include themes from the President’s speech during their classes.

A documentary on US President Barack Obama’s late mother Stanley Ann Dunham will soon be made.
The documentary titled Stanley Ann Dunham: A Most Generous Spirit, will look into her work in microfinance.
It will focus on her decision to send her 10-year-old son from Indonesia to live in Hawaii with her parents out of fear that her politically sensitive work might endanger his life.
Aloe Entertainment will produce the film, while the company topper Mary Aloe will exec produce.
“According to Barack Obama himself, his mother was his single biggest influence in his life,” Variety quoted Aloe as saying.
Charles Burnett will direct the film.
He has helmed documentaries including Killer of Sheep, Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Wedding in the past.
Dunham died at the age of 52 of cancer in 1995.

Former California Rep. Barry Goldwater Jr. says President Barack Obama’s big-government reforms are “potentially jeopardizing future generations,” admitting to Newsmax.TV that “It scares the hell out of me.”
Goldwater, the son of Republican icon Barry Goldwater, warns in an exclusive Newsmax.TV interview that Obama’s plans for a government-run health insurance scheme overlook one a crucial fact: There’s no historical evidence the federal government can effectively operate such a massive government program.
Goldwater, who worked as a stockbroker and business executive before he won his first congressional campaign in 1969, believes the insurance business is best left to the private sector. But he adds that citizens are right to “insist that insurance companies do a better job of meeting their responsibilities.”

Yes they are major contributors especially since they mixed this poison throughout the financial system of the entire world. However if you watch Cops like they say there is his side, her side and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. In that vein lets examine what led to the implementation of the crisis. Back in 2005, Fannie and Freddie were, after years of dominating, on the ropes. They were enmeshed in accounting scandals that led to turnover at the top. At one telling moment in late 2004, captured in an article by my American Enterprise Institute colleague Peter Wallison, the Securities and Exchange Comiission’s chief accountant told disgraced Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines that Fannie’s position on the relevant accounting issue was not even “on the page” of allowable interpretations. Then legislative momentum emerged for an attempt to create a “world-class regulator” that would oversee the pair more like banks, imposing strict requirements on their ability to take excessive risks. Politicians who previously had associated themselves proudly with the two accounting miscreants were less eager to be associated with them. The time was ripe.

On Friday morning, a caller complained before the Highlands Today’s office opened, and another sent an e-mail and attached a photo of the sign.
“I was in town visiting my parents when I drove past the Wild Turkey sign,” said Zane Thomas, a former Sebring resident. “I was aware of the bigotry that exists, but this surprised me… Racism is alive and well in Highlands County.”
Mike Reark, the Wild Turkey’s owner, didn’t view his message as bigoted or racist.
“Our entire lifestyle is under attack by a vicious socialist-leaning organization,” Reark said on Friday morning. “They are out to crush almost every freedom that we have.”
Free enterprise is one of those freedoms, Reark explained. At first, he likened President Obama to a Nazi, then revised his remarks to explain that his message was a metaphor. The Jews represent the American people, and it is Americans who are going into the Nazi ovens, he said.
Obama is taking over the investigation of terrorists, and he’s letting them go, Reark complained. The administration is also investigating the torture of terrorists, and critics are suggesting that CIA officers may be prosecuted if they tortured suspects.
“He’s undermining everything,” Reark said.

Nearing his 90th birthday, Richard Keech is confined to a medical unit at the High Desert State Prison in Susanville.
His family says he stays alive on Ensure, a nutritional drink, and on weekly letters sent from Long Beach by his wife, Kay. Prison staffers read the letters to her husband, whose sight is failing.
The 1997 trial of Keech made area headlines. A prisoner-of-war during World War II, the one-time Marine defended the murder of his son-in-law, calling it a consequence of post-traumatic stress syndrome brought on by his incarceration in a Japanese prison camp.
“My father is in prison because he killed my abusive husband to protect my son, my mother, and me,” his daughter Nancy said in a recent advertisement she ran in the Press-Telegram.
With the family trying for a compassionate discharge that would give their patriarch a brief stay at home, the ad sought letters of support from readers.
In response, says Nancy, “Our family received 43 letters and 32 e-mails of support for my dad.” In the ad, she had also said, “My father is in prison, because he killed my abusive husband (Nicholas Candy) to protect my son, my mother, and me.”
After Candy’s death, Nancy went back to her maiden name.
Dying behind bars
As an aging prisoner, Keech has suffered from a number of ailments, including bone deterioration, skin cancer, spinal stenosis, a torn retina and damage to a femur that has been broken twice.
