David Cameron on Thursday blamed Britain’s economic crisis on a Labour-led era of “big government”, in a sombre and sometimes emotional speech aimed at convincing the nation he is a prime minister in waiting. Mr Cameron warned that he was about to turn off the tap on public spending, and caused concern to some in the City when he said that “sometime soon” the country would have to stop “printing money” if it wanted to head off inflation.

Many of us assumed that the mainstream media outlets would cheer Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize award today, but as Byron York notices, they seem as stunned as everyone else — and also as skeptical. For instance, the Washington Post reminds readers that two other sitting American Presidents have won the Nobel, but only in their second terms, and only after they’d, er, actually achieved something: Obama is the third sitting U.S. president–and the first in 90 years–to win the prestigious peace prize. His predecessors won during their second White House terms, however, and after significant achievements in their diplomacy….

White House sources say President Obama was presented with a crown Thursday evening by employees of a DC area Burger King restaurant. Mr. Obama was given the iconic paper headgear during what was described as a “date night” there with first lady Michelle. Reading from a teleprompter, the president said he considered the crown a “call to action” that he hoped would spur a “new era of cooperation”. He concluded his remarks by saying that he did not feel he deserved the crown. However, White House staff were reported to have seen Mr. Obama wearing the crown for at least…

The American Historical Association has named President Barack H. Obama the “Father of Our Country” at its annual convention in New York. The title was formerly held by the first president of the United States, George Washington. Washington served as commander-in-chief of American forces in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he presided over the Philadelphia convention that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787 and he became the first president of the United States in 1789. Obama told reporters in the White House Rose Garden that he wasn’t sure he had done enough to earn the title, or deserved…

Tomorrow, October 10th, marks the anniversary of an event nearly 1,300 years ago that if not for its successful outcome there would not exist today a Judeo-Christian West, nor would there be a United States, and Europe would quite possibly look much like Afghanistan. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Battle of Tours. In the 500s A.D., Jordan, Syria, Egypt and the surrounding regions were the heart of Christian civilization, with beautiful cities and an advanced society on par with Europe at the time. In the 600s, Islamic armies spread throughout the land converting all by the sword, and…

UPDATED: The announcement Friday that President Obama was awarded the Nobel Prize has resulted in mixed reactions from across Washington and around the world. “The real question Americans are asking is:’What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ ” said Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. “It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working toward peace and human rights. One thing is certain — President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.” Mr. Obama received the award after winning…

President Obama, typically cowering from those in uniform, awarded himself the esteemed Medal of Honor. When asked for comment, he concluded, I only thought about it and, lo and behold, I was awarded it. I often fantasize about feats of courage and since I think and pretend about it, it qualifies me for this Medal. After all, I am the Commander and Chief. Besides, just thinking about something was good enough for a Nobel, right?
