PORTLAND, Ore. - Learning to brew your own beer in Portland, a.k.a. Beervana, would seem to be pointlessness personified. Yet 80 homebrewers and brewers-to-be spent a rainy Saturday morning doing just that in a stark warehouse warmed only by two boiling kettles.

“It’s not pointless at all,” said Michel Brown, a well-known Portland homebrewer who began making his own beer 38 years ago at the age of 17. He was teaching the advanced class in the back room at F.H. Steinbart, the 91-year-old brewers supply store. Steinbart regularly offers free classes such as the one Saturday.

“By brewing your own, you can make just the beer you want,” Brown said. “When was the last time you saw an ordinary bitter on tap in a pub? When did you last see a 60-shilling Scottish ale or a peanut butter porter?”

NEW YORK — A former editor for the New York Post has sued the newspaper, saying she was fired for labeling as racist a cartoon that critics said likened President Barack Obama to a dead chimpanzee.

Sandra Guzman sought unspecified damages in the discrimination lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The lawsuit said she had worked at the newspaper as associate editor since July 2003, repeatedly receiving glowing performance evaluations.

The cartoon was published in February and referred to the killing two days previously of the violent chimpanzee by Connecticut police. It depicted the carcass of the chimp and two police officers with the caption: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

A Colorado sheriff whose deliberate non-compliance with the politically correct attitude of his county over previous Christmas seasons has made headlines today honored the U.S. Marine Corps on its 234th birthday, and said his comments apply equally to members of other military services, to be recognized on Veterans Day this week.

And he implored them to be vigilant now as ever, since their service is not over.

The comments come from Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden, who occasionally releases a personal column called the BullsEye.

He was in the news over recent Christmas seasons when he scoffed at politically correct county rules about using neutral themes like penguins for Christmas decorations, and staged the display of his own traditional Christmas tree and accompanying American themes and decorations at his department’s facility in Fort Collins, Colo.

The lies begin with the name itself. The bill is titled: Affordable Health Care for America Act.

In fact, the bill’s primary purpose has absolutely nothing to do with providing “affordable health care.” The purpose is to extract as much money as possible from “ordinary” Americans — and to do so at the point of a gun (what do you think those financial penalties and even possible prison time are, if not a gun pointing directly at your head?) — and shovel it directly to already-engorged insurance companies. Americans will be forced to buy insurance, which as we all know, many of us through deeply painful personal experience, has nothing whatsoever to do with health care. And Americans will be forced to spend money for largely useless insurance — which insurance will often be entirely useless just when they need it most critically — in amounts that may devastate them and their families.

The very next paragraph is going to make the nut jobs on the far left excitable beyond belief. I am not referring to all Democrats or even a majority of liberals. I am singling out the “they’ve-lost-all-touch-with-reality” crowd. This includes Media Matters for America led by the admitted hit-and-run, drunk-driving serial liar.

The group includes the unshaven, bathrobe-clad unemployed who live in their mother’s basement and are devout followers of MoveOn.Org. It is also the bitter, aging spinster working at the New York Times, the morbidly obese documentary film maker, and cable TV news’ resident drama queen who hosts MSNBC’s Countdown. They are about to simultaneously suffer from brain aneurisms. So without further delay, I’ll say it.
