Cut White House national security advisor James Jones in as part of the Obama administration’s shock-a-day style of operation.

Americans,  says this retired 4-star Marine General,  will feel “a certain shock” when they read an account being released later today of the missed clues that could have prevented the “alleged” Christmas Day bomber from ever boarding the plane. (Susan Page, USA Today, Jan. 7, 2010).

“President Obama ‘is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on,’ Jones said in an interview Wednesday with USA TODAY.

“That’s two strikes,” Obama’s top White House aide on defense and foreign policy issues said, referring to the foiled bombing of the Detroit-bound airliner and the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, in November.  In that case, too, officials failed to act when red flags were raised about an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hassan.  He has been charged with killing 13 people.

“Jones said Obama “certainly doesn’t want that third strike, and neither does anybody else.”

How can you tell, Gen. Jones, when it took the president three days to check in on the foiled terrorist attack from his latest Hawaiian vacation?

My order at my favorite Chinese takeout was taking too long. I stopped into the men’s room. There I witnessed a common scene: the modern toilet disaster. An otherwise clean business had a restroom calamity on its hands, one so grim that I hesitate to describe it.

The conjectural history is not difficult to reconstruct. The toilet apparently had trouble flushing. There was a plunger by the toilet, of course, as we see everywhere today. The toilet was plunged to get rid of the obstruction, while the obstruction itself spilled all over the floor and stuck to the plunger too.

The customer probably left the ghastly scene in a rush. Management knew nothing. But now customers were coming and going into this bathroom, surely losing all inspiration to eat or order food.

It would be easy to blame the restaurant owners. What is with these people and why can’t they at least have a clean restroom? But reacting this way would be unjust. The hidden hand behind this unsanitary calamity is the US government. The true origin of the mess was not in the hour before I arrived but back in 1994, when Congress passed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.

A year ago, I was privileged to be one of several guests at a dinner with President-elect Barack Obama. One thing that struck me and others, aside from his courtesy and fluency, was his air of self-confidence. The man who had risen in just four years from state senator to president of the United States seemed sure he could master the job.

I wonder if he is as sure now. It seems to me that two assumptions that Obama carried into the White House — assumptions that were shared by many who hadn’t voted for him — have proved to be unfounded.

The first is that economic distress would lead more Americans to favor big government policies. The second is that Obama’s personal characteristics and his repudiation of many of his predecessor’s policies would change the minds of America’s critics and enemies.

Any doubts that these assumptions were mistaken were dispelled at Christmastime. On Christmas Eve, the Senate passed a massive health care bill that according to every public opinion poll is opposed by most Americans. And on Christmas Day, Nigerian terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab came close to destroying an airliner as it was preparing to land in Detroit.

The unpopularity of the stimulus package, cap-and-trade legislation and the various health care bills probably surprised the congressional Democratic leaders who put them together and the president who, with surprising passivity, indicated he would sign them. After all, weren’t these ways to spread the wealth to ordinary people, as Obama put it to Joe the Plumber?

But through most of our history, Americans have preferred policies that enable and help them to amass wealth rather than those that purport to transfer someone else’s wealth to them. The biggest outpouring of political sentiment this year came from those who thronged to “tea parties” and denounced increases in the national debt as stirringly as did the first Democratic president, Andrew Jackson, who actually paid it all off.

On foreign policy, Obama imagined that confessing past American sins, announcing the closing of Guantanamo and abandoning enhanced interrogation techniques would make Islamist terrorists think better of the United States. He thought he could induce the leaders of enemy nations to change their ways by referring respectfully to regimes like Iran’s and downplaying all talk of human rights abuses.

It turns out that just as the financial crisis and recession did not much change Americans’ fundamental attitudes on the balance between government and markets, so emollient talk and confessions of past American sins did not much change the behavior of those who consider America a sworn enemy. The mullahs still want their nuclear bomb.

American officials could stop talking about a “war on terror” and speak instead of “man-caused disasters.” But that did not disarm the Islamist terrorist who shot up the recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark., or the Muslim psychiatrist who opened fire at Fort Hood or the pampered Nigerian who tried to bring down Northwest flight 253 over Detroit.

Obama did manage to abandon his statement that the Detroit bomber was an “isolated extremist” and admit that he was in touch with al-Qaida terrorists in Yemen. Yet his administration quickly sent him into the civilian justice system, where he predictably clammed up, and until a reversal yesterday, proclaimed that it would keep sending Guantanamo detainees to Yemen.

We have all experienced the cognitive dissonance that comes when it turns out that the world doesn’t work the way we assumed it would. It’s hard to give up your assumptions and easier often to believe that unexpected events and results were an aberration from norm that would quickly snap back to what we expected.

Midcourse corrections in these circumstances are often awkward and difficult to execute, the more so when all eyes are on you and any change in direction is the subject of universal comment and adverse criticism.

Getting elected president of the United States must be an enormously confidence-building experience: So many people wanted the job, and you got it. Being president can be more chastening when events don’t turn out as you anticipated.

The great presidents — Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt — faced events no one expected and in response changed policies and priorities without ever, so far as we know, losing their nerve. Lesser presidents, including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, did so as well. Will Barack Obama?

The F-4 Phantom II lives. But the life it leads today is an odd one.

It still flies in other countries; in northern Iraq, for example, the Turks use it in combat with the Kurds. But in the United States, it leads a twilight existence. It’s a warplane, but it no longer fights. Its mission is weapons testing, but no pilot flies it. Mostly, you’ll find these F-4s either sitting in the desert or lying at the bottom of the sea.

The F-4 entered service in 1960, flying for the U.S. Navy. After studying its potential for close air support, interdiction, and counter-air operations, the Air Force added the F-4 to its fleet in 1963. Eventually the Phantom ended up even in the U.S. Marine Corps’ inventory. In four decades of active service to the United States, the aircraft set 16 world performance records. It downed more adversaries (280 claimed victories) than any other U.S. fighter in the Vietnam War. Two decades later, it flew combat missions in Desert Storm.

In 1996 the aircraft was retired from the U.S. fleet. But the venerable McDonnell design has one last mission to perform for the military: to go down in flames.

Since 1991, 254 Phantoms have served as unpiloted flying targets for missile and gun tests conducted near Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. The use of F-4 drones (designated QF-4s) is expected to continue until 2014.

This morning on “Fox & Friends” there was a report that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt really died of a brain tumor, not a stroke, and his brain tumor was concealed for political purposes.

What strikes some (or even most) as unbelievable (or “dumb”) may be true.

Beck calls radical Obamaton and ACORN 8 leader his “Rosa Parks,” so his own capacity for “dumbness” is not in doubt.

Beck just proved that again this year by joining the big dog at Fox News, Bill O’Reilly, in mocking the “birthers.”

I don’t know where Obama was born, but I believe that “birthers” are right to respect the United States Constitution and demand proof that Obama is eligible to be President and the burden of proof on that issue belongs on Obama.

In 2008 John McCain quickly produced his birth certificate, but Obama still has not done so.

Obama’s refusal to produce his birth certificate is NOT proof that he was born in Kenya, but it IS a strong sign that he’s hiding SOMETHING.

A war reporter who was detained, interrogated and handcuffed at Seattle airport for refusing to answer personal questions about his income has warned that Americans need to start standing up to TSA thugs because entering the country is now a more stifling experience than some of the worst police states on the planet.

“No country has ever treated me so badly,” Michael Yon wrote in a Facebook message. “Not China. Not Vietnam. Not Afghanistan. Definitely not Singapore or India or Nepal or Germany, not Brunei, not Indonesia, or Malaysia, or Kuwait or Qatar or United Arab Emirates. No county has treated me with the disrespect can that can be expected from our border bullies.”

“Yon was taken aside by the TSA and asked a series of questions, many of which seemed to have no bearing on national security. Finally when asked what his personal income was, he refused to answer because he felt it was none of their business. At this point they handcuffed and detained him until he was eventually released by Port Authority police because the TSA had no legitimate grounds to hold him,” reports Blog Critics ^[2].

Yon said that his experience was par for the course when entering America and not a manifestation of the Christmas Day attack. He told Breitbart.tv about a similar experience endured by his friend who was forced to give TSA agents her email password, who then proceeded to read her emails while she was in security.

Bucking a national trend, violent crime in Buffalo is on the rise. 2009 ended with a 60% rise in homicides over the previous year, surprising “[c]ity and police officials.” They “predicted the city was headed in the right direction.”

So what can be done? From The Buffalo News:

“Buy a gun,” a member of a recently busted inner-city gang told The Buffalo News last week when asked what could be done to curtail homicides. “Hey, I’m just being honest. You asked.”

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The U.S. government is using $25 million in stimulus money to buy and install full body scanners in airports this year, in an effort to ramp up security and create jobs.

The Transportation Security Administration is using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase 150 of the full body scanners, according to TSA spokeswoman Sarah Horowitz.

These “backscatter” scanners, which use X-rays to provide detailed images of hidden objects in or under a person’s clothing, are manufactured by Rapiscan, a subsidiary of Hawthorn, Calif.-based OSI (OSIS ^[2]). The scanners cost from $150,000 to $180,000 apiece, according to the company.

In order to protect the public’s delicate sensibilities, conservative Netherlands-based Christian publisher WordBridge Publishing has reprinted Joseph Conrad’s The N*gger of the Narcissus as The N-word of the Narcissus. According to the publisher’s website, “the past needs to [be] translated into the present.”

The book, now on sale via Amazon for $9.99, includes this description from the publisher:

WordBridge Publishing has performed a public service in putting Joseph Conrad’s neglected classic into a form accessible to modern readers. This new version addresses the reason for its neglect: the profusion of the so-called n-word throughout its pages. Hence, the introduction of “n-word” throughout the text, to remove this offence to modern sensibilities. The N-word of the Narcissus tells the tale of a fateful voyage of a British sailing ship, and on that voyage the ability of a lone black man to take the crew hostage. The ability of this man to manipulate an entire ship’s crew can no longer be seen as a mere exercise in storytelling. Conrad in fact appears to have been the first to highlight the phenomenon of manipulation based in white guilt.

As hard as it is to swallow this latest version of Conrad’s book, author John G. Peters makes a good point in The Cambridge Introduction to Joseph Conrad (Cambridge University Press):

The unfortunately titled The N*gger of the Narcissus (titled Children of the Sea in the first American edition) is Conrad’s best work of his early period. In fact, were it not for the book’s title, it undoubtedly would be read more often than it is currently. At one time, it was one of Conrad’s most frequently read books.

Where to draw the line between “public service” and censorship? Is it better to read this strangely titled version rather than the original? Judging by the one-star Amazon reviews and the reaction of the online community, maybe not.

*Note: I don’t like using the offensive word myself and didn’t want to risk being banned for posting the original word so I edited it. The story itself is one of Conrad’s best and should be recommended reading.

Harsh words indeed.

Readers assuming that they were taken from some “right-wing” website may be shocked to find them coming from Allan Nairn, award-winning journalist and activist, and yesterday’s guest on Democracy Now!, the voice of American Marxism. Host Amy Goodman, chairman of that network’s politburo, may herself have been a bit taken back by the savagery of Nairn’s attacks on President Barack Obama. Responding to questions posed by herself and that of her co-host Anjali Kamat, Nairn came out with both guns blazing.

First came the left’s favorite tactic: the invocation of George W. Bush.

Nairn has decided that Obama is even worse than the former president in that he has killed more people than Bush:

ALLAN NAIRN: Well, in this respect, on matters I was just talking about, there’s no substantive difference. In fact, as far as one can tell, Obama seems to have killed more civilians during his first year than Bush did in his first year, and maybe even than Bush killed in his final year, because not only has Obama kept the machine set on kill, but he had his special project, which is Pakistan and Afghanistan. He used this to get elected.
