Barack Obama: I’ll steamroll health reforms through Congress

President Obama declared for the first time yesterday that he was prepared to steamroller his troubled health reform legislation through Congress with only Democratic support; a move Republicans denounced as the “nuclear option”.

Signalling that his patience had snapped after a year-long fight, Mr Obama laid the ground for Democrats in Congress to muscle the Bill through using a high-risk legislative manoeuvre known as reconciliation, which overrides a Republican filibuster. Although he did not use the word “reconciliation”, Mr Obama made it clear that that was the route he intended to take.

Democrats will, as a result, be able to get the health reform package through the Senate with a simple majority. Mr Obama’s party ceded their 60-stong majority in the upper chamber after losing the late Teddy Kennedy’s Massachusetts seat in January.

That shock defeat was due, in large part, to growing public hostility to Mr Obama’s health reforms, which many see as too expensive at a time of soaring deficits. Ramming the Bill through Congress is, therefore, a high-risk strategy that Republicans vowed to exploit.

Is Obama Stupid?
Patriot Room ^ | 3/3/10 | Clyde Middleton

I’m being absolutely serious right now. Listening to his speech on Health Care, he states that the only reform that Republicans have offered are “deregulation” and “starting over.” As every single person who has spent any time on the Health Care, that is simply a lie. He is also promoting reconciliation, which he said was tyrannical just five years ago. Also, he clearly believes that people in white lab coats make his case stronger.

With the lies and the unarguable hypocrisy, I truly must ask whether Obama is stupid. What person with a shred of common sense or decency would do these things? Or is he just playing politics (poorly)?

In the entire health care debate, among all the competing lawmakers, politicians, experts and pundits, there’s just one person who has seen things from both sides of the political aisle. That is Rep. Parker Griffith of Alabama, who was elected as a Democrat in 2008 and was part of the House Democratic caucus until last Dec. 22, when he switched sides to become a Republican. (Republican-turned-Democrat Sen. Arlen Specter doesn’t count, because he switched parties in April 2009, before the current health care debate got underway.) Given Griffith’s unique perspective — he is also a doctor, with 30 years’ experience…

Tea Party ‘Extremists’ Take Center Stage
Publius Forum ^ | 03/03/10 | Warner Todd Huston

The liberal media’s newest meme is to claim that the tea party movement is made up exclusively of John Birchers, militia types, racists, and “birthers.” Politico, for instance, had an extensive story about how legitimate conservatives are coming to realize that they’ll have to conduct a Buckley styled purge of the extremists if they expect the tea party groups to be taken seriously. Of course, the left has had its extremists for decades, unlike the right has never conducted any such purges, and has also benefited from a news media that has never highlighted the left’s worst nuts.

The whole idea that conservatives have to purge their wackier, more fringe members is something that at one level is obvious but at another is proof that the left and the Old Media are nothing but hypocrites. At still a third level there is part of the attitude exhibited by some of these far right elements that is a root motivation of the tea party movement, fringe or no.

As clownish left-wing commentators such as Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, John Stewart or Stephen Colbert point fingers and guffaw at the fringes of the right and as the New York Times and Politico stroke their chins and look down their noses at the unruly tea party movement, it must be noted that none of these folks ever uttered a cross word against the Code Pink wackos, the communist infiltrators, anti-war hippies, Stalinist apologists, pro-abortion extremists, Euro-trash half-wits, eco-terrorists, and outright anarchists that have filled the left’s ranks since the birth of the new left after WWII…

Politically Correct Killing?

The increase in targeted killings makes urgent the need for Obama to clarify his whole anti-terrorism policy.

By all accounts, President Obama has vastly increased the number of Predator drone strikes during his 13 months in office and expanded the theater of missile operations by thousands of square miles. Indeed, since inauguration day, 2009, Predator and Reaper drone attacks may have killed over 500 suspected terrorists in Waziristan and Pakistan.

In January of this year alone, the United States conducted ten strikes, and may have killed some 70 suspected al-Qaeda or Taliban terrorists — along with additional unknown others in their vicinity. When we killed Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of the Taliban in Pakistan, last summer, eleven others were blown up with him, among them his wife and father-in-law — and, earlier, dozens of others were killed in strikes that failed to target him. In the first two months of 2010, the Obama administration conducted almost half the number of strikes that were conducted in all of 2008, the last full year of the Bush administration.

Why has Obama expanded a killing program that seemingly is at odds with his own past statements (“We’ve got to get the job done there, and that requires us to have enough troops so that we’re not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there”) — as well as with his general efforts to envision the war on terror as more a criminal-justice operation where terrorists are tried in civilian courts and given their Miranda rights?

First, drone aircraft reflect our technological superiority and sensitivity about suffering casualties — and give the U.S. enormous advantages in an asymmetrical war that often favors the enemy. Drones are far cheaper than conventional attack planes, and if they are downed, they cost no American lives.

Second, because of improved technology in the Predator program, a substantial increase in the number of our drones, and increased cooperation from the Pakistani government, the United States is now able to target far more suspected terrorists — and kill them — than ever before.

Third, killing suspected terrorists is far easier than capturing and detaining them. Apparently the Obama administration has concluded that dead men need no cells in Guantanamo, no interrogations, no Miranda rights, no sympathetic ACLU lawyers, and no trials in New York.

Fourth, the Obama administration apparently has been won over to the Bush notion that the number of terrorists is finite. Just as the Bush administration believed that the killing of top al-Qaeda operatives in Iraq — Abu Musab al-Zarqawi for one — weakened the insurgency, so too the Obama administration now believes that key individuals are unique, and that their lost terrorist expertise is not automatically replaced.

Fifth, the Obama administration apparently understands that there will be few political attacks from the Left on the Predator targeted-killing policy of the sort once voiced by candidate Obama. Obama understands that most of the loud leftwing criticism of the Bush anti-terrorism policy was less principled than political in nature, part of a larger effort to discredit the administration in general. Thus, the Constitution-shredding Bush-Cheney protocols of yesteryear — renditions, military tribunals, intercepts, wiretaps, troops in Iraq, Guantanamo — are apparently no longer subversive, but instead are considered useful tools in maintaining U.S. security.

Note that the characterization of the attacks as “assassinations” is not hyperbole; it is a more descriptive term than “bombings.” We are not always focusing on generic terrorist training camps and compounds to eliminate anonymous killers, but often targeting specific individuals whose names and profiles we know — just as, say, the 1943 American P-38 fighter-squadron assassination of Admiral Yamamoto in the Pacific (“Operation Vengeance”) was different in character from the usual fighter and bomber missions against unknown Japanese.

So plenty of issues are raised by the Obama administration’s escalation of targeted assassinations that heretofore have not been fully voiced.

(1) The most obvious is the contradiction not just between the rhetoric of candidate Obama and President Obama (that is now old hat, as we have seen with renditions, tribunals, Guantanamo, etc.), but between Obama’s refashioning of the war on terror itself and the new greater reliance on targeted airborne assassinations. Investigations of Bush-administration officials who approved the waterboarding of three known terrorist masterminds responsible for thousands of American deaths seem incompatible with the more lethal tactics of executing suspected terrorists (and their families) in Pakistan and Waziristan. One difference, of course, as noted above, is that terrorists we execute are not technically in our custody. True, but in today’s sophisticated technological world, once the televised image of someone in Waziristan is beamed into Nevada, the soldier with his hand on the firing button seems to have more jurisdiction over a suspected terrorist than a jailer does over a known one in Guantanamo.

(2) I think the Obama administration will have to cease the commonplace U.S. criticism of targeted assassinations abroad, such as the objections we used to make to the Israelis’ missile attacks on Hamas officials. When one removes the word “war” from “war on terror,” and begins Mirandizing would-be mass murderers such as the Christmas Day bomber, then conflict devolves into the realm of espionage and criminal justice. Thus the line between a team of Israeli agents executing a known Hamas kingpin in Dubai and a squadron of Predators taking out dozens of suspected terrorists in Pakistan seems somewhat blurred. Was the conflict in Gaza and its aftermath any less a “war” than our own efforts in Afghanistan? More to the point, in the context of Obama’s voicing sharp criticism of the previous administration, promising Mr. Abdulmutallab his Miranda rights, and planning to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York, his administration’s assassination plans strike a false note. One expects Texans in loudly announced “wars on terror,” not Nobel peace laureates in “overseas contingency operations,” to order the summary execution of suspects — and anyone unlucky enough to be nearby when the Hellfire missile hits.

The Obama File ^ | 3/4/10 | Beckwith

The following announcement was on The Obama File this morning:

I would like to thank the 7 people who contributed to the support of The Obama File in the last 48 hours.

I hate to put that reminder on this site, and I only do it once a month.

I have decided to convert The Obama File into a subscription only site because of lack of support.

If you don’t care, I don’t care.

I don’t know how long it will take, but I am suspending posts until the conversion is complete.

I will direct my activities today to returning all 10 contributions received in the last two weeks and contacting a consultant who can perform the necessary work to convert this site to subscription only.

Anyone who has contributed to the support of The Obama File in the last six months will be automatically enrolled as life subscribers, and will never need to pay another dime.

This is a done deal.

Any contributions received after this notice is posted WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

And please don’t send me any emails telling me how important it is to continue operations, and how much this site will be missed.

Beckwith . . .

It’s a sad day when the excellent Obama data base, The Obama File, which the United States Library of Congress selected for inclusion in its historic collection of Internet materials, folds because we were too miserly and uncaring to donate a few dollars a month to our fellow FReeper, Beckwith, to help with maintainance expenses for his website. Now the public will be deprived of the best Obama data base on the net.

An Opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal today flatly calls President Obama’s plan to jam ObamaCare through the U.S. Senate using the ‘Nuclear Option’ “Reconciliation Process” an “Abuse of Power.” The article lays out very clearly how this will be the first time the process created in 1974 has ever been used to pass sweeping legislation like Obama’s Health Care Plan. Though the White House is trying to make people think it is no big deal – that it has been used before like this – the Democrats’ own Sen. Robert Byrd has said it would be wrong to…

TP to Bill Colombo Clinton:

Come and Get Us!

By Judi McLeod  Wednesday, March 3, 2010

The Obama Administration is about to come down like the proverbial ton of bricks on the fast growing Tea Party.

Ever since Sept. 12, 2009 when the Pocket Messiah flew over the 1.5 (or more) million strong, cheering, flag waving patriot resistance to Big-Government-Going-Socialist, Big Gov’s   been in a right snit.

Having seen it with his own eyes, Barack knew. Michelle knew, Oprah and Valerie Jarrett knew.  Taking long drags on their reefers even the Czars, who know nothing much about anything else, knew.

It was only a matter of time before the do-anything-to-stay-in-power-or-Hillary-will-kill-me ex-Prez Bill Clinton would be dispatched to find the right scandal to smear the Tea Party Movement off the electoral map.

You just know it’s the Night of The Long Knives when, (a) Clinton turns Colombo; (b) Nancy Pelosi claims cause with the Tea Party and (c), MSNBC conducts an “interview” on Tea Party activist Mark Williams, ranting and raving that the Tea Partiers want to shoot black people and Jews.

Perfect storms and tsunamis don’t form out on the ocean, no matter what CNN’s Rick Sanchez says.  For Democrats-cum-Marxists they emerge from the steam of a witch’s cauldron.

Timing is everything if you are a sent-to-destroy-the-Republic Obama.  A time to be born, in his case at least on paper; a time to best Madonna as everybody’s Material Girl in a self-serving autobiography,  or enter the sphere in a Billy Ayers’ biography.

Another new twist in birth certificate story: Hawaii “paper copy was destroyed in a fire”
World Net Daily ^ | March 2, 2010 | Joseph Farah

The Hawaii Department of Health claims to have an original copy of Barack Obama’s birth certificate, right?

In fact, it is this established “fact” that has persuaded so many people there is nothing to the question of eligibility.

After all, an official in Hawaii has made a public pronouncement that she has inspected the document and declared on her own authority that Obama is a “natural born American” and thus eligible to serve as president.

For many Americans, that settles the question.

However, now a new version of the story is emerging.

The United Kingdom’s Sky News reported Saturday: “Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama’s birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state’s archives.”

Which is it?

Does Hawaii actually have an original long-form, paper birth certificate for Obama, or was it destroyed in a fire?

It seems the story is ever-changing.

And that’s why it’s time for Obama to come clean.

There is little question the heavily Democratic state of Hawaii has no interest in providing any information that would disqualify the first president claiming to be from that state.

If indeed the state has a copy of the original birth certificate, as Director of Health Dr. Chiyome Fukino claims, it should be no problem for Obama to give her permission to release it publicly – and, once and for all, settle the controversy that has resulted in that state being inundated with inquiries from curious American citizens.

Fukino has released two public statements on this matter.(continued)

Outside View: Prime Minister Obama?
UPI ^ | March 3, 2010 | HARLAN ULLMAN

Posted on Wednesday, March 03, 2010 8:10:51 AM by maggief

WASHINGTON, March 3 (UPI) — Whether through dramatic events or the power of personality, presidents change the course of the nation. Lincoln (the Civil War); FDR (The New Deal and winning World War II); and LBJ (The Great Society, civil rights and the Vietnam debacle) are prime examples.

Now, President Barack Obama could join this select group. And, for better or worse, the consequences will be profound.

President Obama could become de facto Prime Minister Obama.

The current cliche in Washington is that government is broken. Actually, the condition is far more acute. The political foundation of the United States was predicated on a representative democracy manifested through a system of checks and balances in which Congress in Article I of the Constitution was meant to be the dominant branch. Political parties were unmentioned.

Of the potential systemic flaws, two are particularly relevant. First, was the emergence of the presidency as the most important arm of government. Second, was that this construct was dependent upon political parties that ultimately could compromise.

But after three or four decades, the weight of Vietnam, Watergate, campaign financing and the radicalization and influence of the extreme wings of both parties has made compromise increasingly difficult. Indeed, the ideologically hardening of both Republicans and Democrats means that checks and balances have frozen the functioning of government. A dysfunctional system is now virtually inoperable when it comes to governing.

Van Jones, President Obama’s former “green jobs” czar and a newly appointed Princeton lecturer, has a history of sparking protests against universities and previously slammed non-activist students as “worthless people” obtaining “worthless degrees,” WND has learned.

Jones also implied a university education must help students become “revolutionaries.”

Jones resigned in September from his post as adviser to the White House Council on Environmental Quality after it was exposed he founded a communist revolutionary organization and signed a statement that accused the Bush administration of possible involvement in the 9/11 attacks. Jones also called for “resistance” against the U.S. Jones previously stated his advocacy for green jobs was part of a broader movement to destroy the U.S. capitalist system.

Princeton last week announced Jones has been appointed a visiting fellow in the Center for African American Studies and the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the university’s Wilson School.

An updated investigation report on the scandal known as “Walpingate” adds fuel to the suspicion that President Obama may have fired Gerald Walpin, an independent inspector general, as an illegal act of political cronyism and revenge.

“Throughout our investigation of Mr. Walpin’s removal, the White House has repeatedly communicated that the president was not motivated by inappropriate political reasons,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., one of the authors of the updated report. “The fact is Gerald Walpin led an aggressive investigation of a political ally of President Obama that successfully recovered taxpayer dollars. While firing an investigator who uncovered the abuse of funds by a political ally might be considered an act of ‘political courage’ in Chicago politics, for most Americans it raises troubling

Pelosi laid groundwork for Obama’s Transformation of America
By Judi McLeod
imageThe clock ticking toward midnight in the well orchestrated Fall of America is Nancy Pelosi’s shining hour.

Rational people may ponder how Pelosi can urge Democrats to vote for ObamaCare even if it means the end of their careers.

Like Pelosi, many of her Dem cohorts including Senators Barbara Boxer, Harry Reid, Diane Feinstein among others,  are long past their due date.  In ending their careers for ObamaCare they have nothing to lose.  How many of them will live out the rest of their lives in fabulous wealth?  Are Dems being paid off with funds stolen from the American till during the destructive Obama administration?

Citibank needs seven days?
By Marilyn Barnewall
imageLate last week, a slight furor arose when it became public knowledge that Citibank sent the following notice to customers:

“Effective April 1, 2010, we reserve the right to require seven (7) days advance notice before permitting a withdrawal from all checking accounts. While we do not currently exercise this right and have not exercised it in the past, we are required by law to notify you of this change.”

In my opinion, this was not just a notice about Citibank or Citigroup.  It was a notice to people that all banks are undercapitalized and all have the right to take up to seven (7) days to clear a check or to give you all the money in your checking account if you demand it.

Thoughts on part one of “A Concurring Opinion,” Part 1
I welcome the opportunity to have an ethereal discussion with Timothy Baldwin—it will not be a “debate”, as we agree on too much—concerning “secession”, not only because of the intrinsic value of the subject, but also because of Mr. Baldwin’s erudition and gentlemanly manner.

Short sellers steal working class wealth
Remember when America learned that AIG (America International Group), one of the companies to receive billions in bailout dollars from working class taxpayers, used $165 million of that money to pay bonuses to hedge fund sellers?

Bill Sizemore, the only Gubernatorial Candidate that can save Oregon
The Republican Party machine has always been pretty much worthless to candidates, but this year they are actually working against their best known candidate. Sizemore told me that if he wins the primary, he will probably have to run against four opponents: the media, the Democrats, the public employee unions, and the politically correct wing of the Republican Party………

The Media, Extremists and Conspiracies, Part 2
The Politico piece, “Conservatives Target Their Own Fringe,” attempts to identify various extremists within the conservative movement, including the “militia” movement. Writer Kenneth P. Vogel suggests that they include the Oath Keepers who helped co-sponsor the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). But Vogel’s effort to link this group to the militia movement, which some people associate with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, is a charge not backed up by any evidence…….

Allegedly the corrupt crook, Rick Perry…By: Devvy

March 3, 2010 Leave a comment

Allegedly the corrupt crook, Rick Perry won our primary for governor with 53% of the vote. How putrid a one world government, smarmy parasite like Perry would win this primary.

Debra Medina allegedly has 16%.

But, it’s all over.

Perry declared the winner in an hour.

In a massive state like this with only 13% of the vote “counted,” he is declared the winner. Every election, same old story.

Kay “Bail Outs” Hutchinson supposedly got 30%

My husband and I voted today using paper ballots. The cattle in line behind me listened (I have such a soft voice don’t ya know?) as I explained that I don’t trust the machines and I wanted to make sure my votes were counted as I entered them on the ballot.

The lemmings all took their voting card and dutifully went to the machines. Brain dead. Eyes glazed over. The herding technique.

The whole time we were there, we were the only ones who asked for a paper ballot. When we got done, we put them in the envelope for paper ballots. There was only one other paper ballot from all day.

March 3, 2010 – Few people have heard of the Battle of Baghdad. They might remember Iraq’s information minister, Mohammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, warning of a surprise awaiting invading U.S. troops if they attacked Saddam International Airport. Later, al-Sahhaf claimed that the Iraqi Republican Guard had slaughtered U.S. troops and was in control of the entire facility. His claims were mostly true, but were countered effectively by a U.S. military-media campaign of evasions and distortions that switched the subject from the airport action to Private Jessica Lynch, while ridiculing al-Sahhaf as “Baghdad Bob.”

What came to be called the Battle of Baghdad Cover-Up (BOBCUP) was an illegal deception of the American people, as well as an immoral desecration of the military men who had fought and died there, only to be pushed into the memory hole by Big Brother Bush. Captain Eric H. May, a former U.S. Army intelligence and public affairs officer, was outraged. He responded by declaring himself to be self-activated on a mission of conscience, then investigated and confirmed BOBCUP. Next, he reported it to the Army Inspector General and to the mainstream media, only to discover that both entities were complicit in the cover-up.

To meet the Obama administration’s targets for increasing fuel taxes, researchers say that Americans will have to pay $7 for a gallon of gasoline; about 17 percent more than drivers in green-conscious and generally highly taxed Sweden. In their study, researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs devised several combinations of tax increases to address 70 percent of the oil used in the United States. The combinations were selected to match fuel consumption reduction targets. Most of their models assumed an economy-wide carbon dioxide tax starting at $30 a ton in 2010 and escalating to $60…
