This power grab is illegal. Republican Sen. Judd Gregg (NH) had been chosen to head Commerce. He had accepted the invitation from Obama, but withdrew last week over concerns including the Census Bureau being removed from…

When Dictatorship Came to America

The presidential oath of office contains a pledge to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, and by implication the liberties of the American people that the document is intended to preserve. In light of this, can you name which of the delegated powers in the U.S. Constitution allow the president to invade his own country, mass murder his own American citizens, and bomb, burn and plunder their cities? Can you explain how such acts would be consistent with protecting the constitutional liberties of those unfortunate citizens? If you think you can, then congratulations, you are a Lincoln Scholar. If not, do not despair. You are in decent company, including the five living past presidents as of 1861, namely, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan. Lincolns predecessor, President James Buchanan of Pennsylvania, stated the truth when he said the following:

Has the Constitution delegated to Congress the power to coerce a State into submission which is attempting to withdraw . . . from the Confederacy [of states]? If answered in the affirmative, it must be on the principle that the power has been conferred upon Congress to declare and to make war against a State. After much serious reflection, I have arrived at the conclusion that no such power has been delegated to Congress or to any other department of the federal government (Senate Journal, 36th Congress, 2nd Session, 4 December 1860, 15–16).

Unlike Lincoln, James Buchanan was a constitutionalist. His opinion that a president has no constitutional right to invade his own country and murder his fellow citizens has relegated him to the bottom of every ranking of American presidents by the American history profession for generations. This doesnt mean he was wrong, only that a large segment of the history profession is hopelessly corrupt. Buchanan understood, as did nearly everyone prior to Lincoln, that the states did not give up any of their sovereignty when they ratified the Constitution; they merely delegated several distinct powers to the central government that was designed to act for their mutual benefit.

The Misesian Vision

This talk was delivered at the Jeremy Davis Mises Circle in Houston, Texas, on January 23, 2010.

I’m finding it ever more difficult to describe to people the kind of world that the Mises Institute would like to see, with the type of political order that Mises and the entire classical-liberal tradition believed would be most beneficial for mankind.

It would appear that the more liberty we lose, the less people are able to imagine how liberty might work. It is a fascinating thing to behold.

  • People can no longer imagine a world in which we could be secure without massive invasions of our privacy at every step, and even being strip-searched before boarding airplanes, even though private institutions manage much greater security without any invasions of human rights;
  • People can no longer remember how a true free market in medical care would work, even though all the problems of the current system were created by government interventions in the first place;
  • People imagine that we need 700 military bases around the world, and endless wars in the Middle East, for “security,” though safe Switzerland doesn’t;
  • People think it is insane to think of life without central banks, even though they are modern inventions that have destroyed currency after currency;
  • Even meddlesome agencies like the Consumer Products Safety Commission or the Federal Trade Commission strike most people as absolutely essential, even though it is not they who catch the thieves and frauds, but private institutions;
  • The idea of privatizing roads or water supplies sounds outlandish, even though we have a long history of both;
  • People even wonder how anyone would be educated in the absence of public schools, as if markets themselves didn’t create in America the world’s most literate society in the 18th and 19th centuries.

This list could go on and on. But the problem is that the capacity to imagine freedom – the very source of life for civilization and humanity itself – is being eroded in our society and culture. The less freedom we have, the less people are able to imagine what freedom feels like, and therefore the less they are willing to fight for its restoration.

Down With the Presidency by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

Down With the Presidency

by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.
by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

This speech was delivered near the imperial capital on October 6, 1996.

The modern institution of the presidency is the primary political evil Americans face, and the cause of nearly all our woes. It squanders the national wealth and starts unjust wars against foreign peoples that have never done us any harm. It wrecks our families, tramples on our rights, invades our communities, and spies on our bank accounts. It skews the culture toward decadence and trash. It tells lie after lie. Teachers used to tell school kids that anyone can be president. This is like saying anyone can go to Hell. It’s not an inspiration; it’s a threat.

The presidency – by which I mean the executive State – is the sum total of American tyranny. The other branches of government, including the presidentially appointed Supreme Court, are mere adjuncts. The presidency insists on complete devotion and humble submission to its dictates, even while it steals the products of our labor and drives us into economic ruin. It centralizes all power unto itself, and crowds out all competing centers of power in society, including the church, the family, business, charity, and the community. I’ll go further. The US presidency is the world’s leading evil. It is the chief mischief-maker in every part of the globe, the leading wrecker of nations, the usurer behind Third-World debt, the bailer-out of corrupt governments, the hand in many dictatorial gloves, the sponsor and sustainer of the New World Order, of wars, interstate and civil, of famine and disease. To see the evils caused by the presidency, look no further than Iraq or Serbia, where the lives of innocents were snuffed out in pointless wars, where bombing was designed to destroy civilian infrastructure and cause disease, and where women, children, and the aged have been denied essential food and medicine because of a cruel embargo. Look at the human toll taken by the presidency, from Dresden and Hiroshima to Waco and Ruby Ridge, and you see a prime practitioner of murder by government.

Grassroots’ Coffee Party Organizer Exposed as Obama Political Operative

Latest Obama Deception: The Coffee Party

By Bob Parks  Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Whaddaya know about that… the Coffee Party isn’t a group of “concerned citizens” (as we were led to believe) after all…

‘Grassroots’ Coffee Party Organizer Exposed as Obama Political Operative Surprise! Surprise! It turns out that the “grassroots” organizer of the “progressive alternative” to the Tea Parties, the Coffee Party, has been exposed as an Obama political operative. If you had read the profiles of the Coffee Party founder Annabel Park (video) in the Washington Post or New York Times you wouldn’t have had a hint as to her extensive political activity in the 2008 Obama campaign. Park is a former Strategy   Analyst at the NY Times who was one of organizers and operators of the United for Obama video channel at YouTube.

Google “coffee party” and see how many stories describe Ms. Park as a documentary filmmaker, with not one word of her affiliation to the Obama campaign. This is coordination from the White House and a bunch of unwitting, yet willing dupes being used again. Obama must be really desperate to have to rely on the flakes again.

Lies and distortions of Obama’s speech

How Effing Stupid Does He Think We Are?

By Neill Arnhart  Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Just when you think he couldn’t be any worse.

I got so mad when I heard the President’s speech on his “compromise” (snicker, snicker, chortle, chortle) health care plan, that I vented on facebook, and my mother posted a reply telling me to watch my language.

I’m fifty two years old, and I have mother who tells me to watch my language.

Thanks, mom, for that, and all of the other ways that you taught me not be an idiot.  I guess I’m never too old to be reminded.

To start off with, the President dressed the stage with people in white coats, representing doctors and nurses.  But are they really doctors and nurses, or were they non medical people in white coats put up for show, like last time?

You know, they were probably real this time, but we shouldn’t even have to wonder.  But when he has dishonestly dressed the stage before, there is no reason to take it for granted that he is being truthful this time.

I know it’s a small thing.  The point I’m trying to make is that when Obama speaks, it’s never too early to start looking for deception.

Apples and oranges

The President spoke of bills that have been pushed through by republicans by reconciliation, but has comparisons were dishonest at best.

He compared it to welfare reform, but welfare reform passed with 78 votes.  It had strong bipartisan support.  Reconciliation helped speed up something that was going to happen anyway.  He also mentioned the Children’s Insurance Program as a point of comparison.  That passed with 85 votes.  Not much of a nail biter there.  Reconciliation didn’t subvert the will of the people.  It expedited it.
