I don’t see how the president’s position and popularity can survive the oil spill. This is his third political disaster in his first 18 months in office. And they were all, as they say, unforced errors, meaning they were shaped by the president’s political judgment and instincts.

There was the tearing and unnecessary war over his health-care proposal and its cost. There was his day-to-day indifference to the views and hopes of the majority of voters regarding illegal immigration. And now the past almost 40 days of dodging and dithering in the face of an environmental calamity. I don’t see how you politically survive this.

The president, in my view, continues to govern in a way that suggests he is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of his countrymen. This is a terrible thing to see in a political figure, and a startling thing in one who won so handily and shrewdly in 2008. But he has not, almost from the day he was inaugurated, been in sync with the center. The heart of the country is thinking each day about A, B and C, and he is thinking about X, Y and Z. They’re in one reality, he’s in another.

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― North Dallas resident Micah Harleaux has nothing but fond memories of his best friend who was killed in a drunken driving accident.

“Carl was an extremely funny individual, he had a biting sense of humor,” Harleaux said. “He was full of life.”

Carl Lotspeich was killed nearly a year ago when a drunken driver slammed into the 25-year-old’s car on the Dallas Tollway. The driver, who also died, was heading the wrong way.

“There are advancements in automobiles like seat belts and air bags to protect not only the driver but also those around them,” Harleaux said. “I think this would be something that would be tremendous for the safety of every individual that gets behind a wheel.”

Here is video of Lt. Col. Ralph Peters on “The O’Reilly Factor” where he blasted the New York Times for publishing details of a memo from Gen. David Petraeus ordering that “covert military operations be expanded in the Middle East.” Peters says this is just another example of the NYT hurting the nation.

Peters said this kind of action makes it “much harder” for our agents to carry out their work on the ground in places like Iran. Essentially, the New York Times has tipped the enemy off as to what we are planning to do.

Peters said NYT Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. is “a man with no regard for his country, a citizen of the world – one of the global elite.” Peters stopped short of saying Sulzberger “hates” his country, but he said it is clear “he and his paper are damaging our country.”

Thousands of census workers, including many temporary employees, are fanning out across America to gather information on the citizenry. This is a process that takes place not only every decade in order to complete the constitutionally-mandated census; but also as part of the continuing “American Community Survey” conducted by the Census Bureau on a regular basis year in and year out.

What many Americans don’t realize, is that census workers — from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee — are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for “the collection of statistics.” If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00.

That’s right — not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether you’re there or not, in order to gather whatever “statistics” the law permits.

In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding — and receiving — private cell phone numbers…

If you’re born in the U.S.A., you’re an American citizen. Some lawmakers, however, plan to challenge that basic assumption.

In what might be the next great flash point in the nation’s ongoing debate about immigration policy, legislation has been introduced in Congress and a pair of states to deny birth certificates to babies born of illegal-immigrant parents.

“Currently, if you have a child born to two alien parents, that person is believed to be a U.S. citizen,” says Randy Terrill, a Republican state representative in Oklahoma who is working on an anti-birthright bill. “When taken to its logical extreme, that would produce the absurd result that children of invading armies would be considered citizens of the U.S.”

Bills to challenge the fact that citizenship is granted as a birthright in this country have been perennial nonstarters in Congress, although the current legislation has 91 co-sponsors. As with other issues surrounding immigration, however, some state legislatures still might act, if only in hopes of bringing this issue before the Supreme Court.

This seems to be the philosophy of the Veterans Services (VA) administration. Just recently I interviewed Dick Phenniger vstnow.org, a leading, whistle blower, former vet and business man, who has investigated health care abuse to our veterans for many years at the hands of the VA. He shared enough violations and horrors with the VA against our troops that I couldn’t help thinking about the dreaded IRS. In my view, both should be gutted and started again with an emphasis in common sense, real service and ethics. Oh…..but back to the bigger than life problem.
