At the appropriate moment, the Commandant of the Marine Corps walked with dignity to the lectern and recited the moving words of Jesus, as recorded in the tenth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel, beginning at the eleventh verse … ironically, the same reading he had chosen several weeks before, excerpts of which are printed here:”He who enters by the door is the shepherdof the sheep.
To him the gatekeeper opens;the sheep hear his voice, and he calls hisown sheep by name and leads them out.When he has brought out all his own, hegoes before them, and the sheep followhim, for they know his voice. A strangerthey will not follow, but they will flee fromhim, for they do not know the voice ofstrangers. I am the good shepherd. Thegood shepherd lays down his life for thesheep. He who is a hireling and not ashepherd, whose own the sheep are not,sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheepand flees … He flees because he is ahireling and cares nothing for the sheep.I am the good shepherd; I know my ownand my own know me …”
