The latest outrage coming from Canada shows that Muslim women don’t have to lift their veils or prove that their face matches their ID’s. The Homeland Security Newswire writes:”The issue came to light through a video taken by Mick Flynn of Bradford, England. Flynn was boarding a flight at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport when he witnessed two women with their faces covered board an Air Canada Heathrow-bound flight without being asked to remove their veils.

In fact, in the video that Flynn has posted online, a man traveling with the women hands in all the passports and is the only one to interact with airline staff while two veiled women simply walk through.“I complained at the desk — and again as I boarded the plane — asking if the pilot was happy that two women boarded without being identified,” Flynn told QMI News Agency. “Both members of staff whom I spoke to were flustered and clearly embarrassed.”Lilley and Bryn Weese write that Flynn’s communication with Air Canada and his video posting have resulted in a threatened lawsuit from the airline. As for answers from the company about security procedures, their response reveals holes in Canada’s air security.”How absolutely stupid we have become. We’ve just handed the enemy a plan. On July 22, the Defense Business Board task force recommended that the Secretary of Defense reduce the DoD civilian workforce by more than 111,000, and laid the groundwork for potential future recommendations to cut spending on military retirement, health care, family support, and other programs.

Additionally, the task force recommended drastic reductions in combatant command staffing, hiring freezes, and elimination of organizational duplication. These preliminary recommendations will be followed in October by additional cost-cutting proposals.

For the last year, the Defense Business Board has predicted major problems for the Defense budget as the nation deals with deficit reduction efforts, the economic slowdown, escalating health care and personnel costs, and the potential exit from two wars.

I like the book, Soldiers Of The Sea, by Robert Debs Heinl, Jr., Colonel, USMC, for many reasons.

I personally consider it to be the most thorough and detailed account of the Marine Corps as it was. And, I also like it, if for no other reason, the opening pages contain the photograph by Lou Lowery of the actual flag raising at Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on 23 February 1945–not, mind you, the photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the “replacement” flag raising which occurred later that same morning.

And, the scope of Heinl’s book is from 1775 thru 1962–just as well, after 1962…well, things began to change in many ways for the old Corps soon after that. In any case, this author presents a most thorough and detailed account of Corps history with information on topics of interest that I’ve seen in no other writings.I was surprised to read that Colonel Heinl referred to the service hat, or campaign hat as it is more popularly known, as the “old slouch hat.” Prior to my reading of that I had thought of that term soley as a reference to the Australian campaign-type hat; and this caused me to look into the matter a bit further.

Lately, notice has been taken of several recent news articles regarding the U.S. Army.
First, there was an article a few months ago indicating that the Army has decided to begin requiring all its Soldiers to be both trained and ready to assume duties as basic riflemen. Then, more recently, there was an announcement that the Army Chief Of Staff would require the capitalization of the word “Soldier.” These two articles have been e-mailed around, and posted to numerous Marine messageboards/forums with lengthy discussions ensuing. Some Marines have even gone so far as to think that “hey, they’re copying us again.” But, everybody seems to have an opinion on these topics, and they freely voice their opinions.

The words soldier, sailor and airman denote a person who might be a civilian, or the word could also be generic. There are sailors, sailing profesionally and taking cargo ships to all parts of the globe. A soldier is anyone who could be in any military, or even civilian, force. Airmen could be civilian flyers as well as participating in a flight piloted by others. A Marine, however, denotes a person who is a specialized professional in a specialized job. He is a soldier of the sea. No one else can make that claim. There is no civilian word to describe anyone that is a “marine.” So, its MARINE! this is my description.

In regard to the Every Soldier A Rifleman issue, the Marine Corps has always considered all its Marines riflemen, regardless of specialized duties assigned. “Every Marine A Rifleman” has been the emphasis and focus of all Marine training. Nothing new there for the Marine Corps.

And Marines, who consider and claim MARINE as our title, have been capitalizing the word Marine’s first letter M, since, to the best of my recall, the late 1950s, possibly the very early 1960s, when a change was effected to the Marine Corps Personnel Manual (MCPM) requiring this.

The rank of the venerable Gunnery Sergeant is now unique to the Marine Corps. In 1775 the basic enlisted ranks of private, corporal and sergeant were used by Marines. Later, at varying times, the more senior ranks of Sergeant Major, First Sergeant, Master Sergeant, etc. were adopted.

But the Marine Gunnery Sergeant rank adopted in 1898 has remained distinctive to the Marine Corps.After the World War, the Marine Corps added to its rank structure the ranks first used by the army of Staff Sergeant, Technical Sergeant, and Master Sergeant. The Marines’ rank of Master Technical Sergeant, for instance, came about by combining the rank titles of two previous ranks.

Ever wonder where some of the most common items of our Marine Corps history came from? Things like the term “Jarhead,” etc.? Most of these things are pretty well known by all Marines. But, then, there are also numerous cases where our accepted history is just plain inaccurate. For instance, Major Devereaux’s last message from the besieged Wake Island in early World War Two–”Send Us More Japs”–or that the red stripe on the blue uniform trousers of officers and NCOs (sometimes referred to as bloodstripes) commemorates the Marine blood spilled at the battle of Chapultapec in 1847. These two items are not true, and there are many more things like this that I have addressed elsewhere on my websites.

This bold power grab is directed at immigration, which is predominantly a domestic-policy matter, where unilateral presidential authority is inherently weak. Obama’s efforts appear to be driven by crass political considerations, making them all the more unprecedented and unfortunate.

The principles of separation of powers and federalism comprise the foundation of America’s constitutional structure. Separation of powers enables Congress to play a dominant role in domestic affairs and the president to enjoy robust authority in military and foreign affairs. Federalism limits the authority of the federal government and allows the states to wield ample police powers.

The Obama administration’s immigration policy provides a vivid example of blatant disregard for separation of powers and federalism.As its first order of business, the administration canceled state and local law-enforcement programs designed to help federal authorities arrest illegal aliens. Next, it proceeded to rewrite federal immigration laws. A recently leaked Department of Homeland Security memo describes a detailed plan for back-door amnesty for illegal aliens; it explains how to enact “meaningful immigration reform absent legislative action.”

Finally, under White House direction, the Department of Justice has challenged Arizona’s new immigration statute — because Arizona actually took existing federal immigration law seriously and decided to enforce it.

Semper Fidelis: Jerry McConnell at Guadalcanal

It was 68 years ago today that Jerry McConnell landed with the 1st Marines on a beach at Guadalcanal, in 1942. It would be over four months before Jerry got to take a deep breath, and step back from the constant strain of fighting the Japanese. When he departed “the ‘Canal,” he weighed 35 pounds less than when he left America. He was weak from dysentery, wracked with malaria, and had seen and done things that he never imagined before Guadalcanal. He was 18 years old.Before getting any deeper into Mr. McConnell’s experiences on Guadalcanal, I would like to thank Kent Cooper, and the folks at Seacoast Marines. It was Mr. Cooper who, a few years ago, persuaded Jerry that it was important for future generations that he write down “…a period of my life that had been put behind me to be forgotten. Administration spokesman Robert Gibbs’ angry retort that left-wing critics of President Obama ought to be “drug tested” because they are “crazy” marks a crucial benchmark in the accelerating evisceration of Obama’s public support, even amongst liberals who, having exalted Obama as some kind of savior, are now realizing that he is merely a servant to the banking elite.

WHY THE TITLE “GLOBE and ANCHOR”? Many have asked why I have not indicated, eagle, globe and anchor, rather than just “GLOBE and ANCHOR,” implying that I have erred. No error, it reads as I intended. Apparently unknown to most Marines of today, there was a time in the Corps when Marines referred to their emblem EMBLEM, not “ega”–but that’s yet another story as simply the “Globe and Anchor,” and there are still some old timers and writers around who use the term.

There are many writings available, most of them older writings, but some more recent, where you will find this. One of the best examples of this, perhaps, may be–and there are many more–a quote in the recent book by Colonel Jon T. Hoffman, USMCR, Chesty. It reads as follows: “Colonel Robert D. Heinl, the premier historian of the Old Corps and a former subordinate of Puller, believed that Chesty was one of the greatest raconteurs that ever wore the Globe and Anchor.” Random House, 2001, Preface, page xi Globe and Anchor was still a common expression even in this old boot’s first days in the Corps of the early 1950s.

I find the term similar to the term used by the Royal Marines for their emblem, known as the Globe and Laurel. Matter of fact, I do not recall our emblem being specifically referred to as an eagle, globe and anchor until the very late 1950s or early ’60s, on TV recruiting promotions, ads, etc. To be sure, the popular term has now become eagle, globe and anchor, and considered by the majority to be the correct term, and, apparently, anything else being incorrect in their eyes.

Not this Marine, as always, I’ll fall in w/the old salts. Besides, “Globe and Anchor” has a fine ring to it, it clicks!

During his tenure as President, the First Couple has enjoyed lavish parties, state dinners, multiple vacations, concerts, golfing trips and expensive Broadway dates. It has been one non-stop party at our expense. Over the last 19 months, the First Couple has been living as monarchs instead of public servants. This opulent lifestyle has not been earned, but is being financed by suffering American taxpayers.

A poll called “where were you really born that day?” summoned this up into question.The persistent theory boosted heavily by conservative activists that Obama was not born in Hawaii, but that he was born outside of the country of the U.S.

The CNN/Opinion research Corp. survey said 27 percent of responsive people doubt that Obama’s father is telling the truth or that his birth certificate is real. 42% have no doubts, 29% said he probably was born in Hawaii, but couldn’t give a sure answer. Democrats backed Obama more than Republicans. 14 percent of Republicans said he was NOT born in the United States. This issue began over Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign and has become a topic of interest with Rush Limbaugh and the so called ‘Birther’ movement. Hawaii has already released a “certified” copy of Obama’s birth certificate. The 1961 archives of two local newspapers in Hawaii also show his birth announcements! A little over a year ago, I wrote a column suggesting that due to the blatant hostility the National Education Association was expressing towards Christians, it was time for Christian teachers to withdraw their membership from the NEA. As it turns out, the focus of my call to abandon this radically left lobby group was a bit too narrow.

As evidenced by its own website, the NEA is not merely anti-Christian, they are anti-American as well.How else can you explain the plan that appeared on the NEA’s “Diversity Calendar” instructing teachers to make October 1st a special recognition of the Communist revolution in China?

According to an article by Channing Turner in the independent, Washington-based news site Main Justice, attorney Robert Driscoll, of Alston & Bird, LLP, who represents Arpaio, has described the Justice Department’s threat to sue the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office as premature and has indicated that Arpaio will cooperate with certain elements of the probe.

But Driscoll also claimed that Arpaio had previously handed over thousands of documents in a lawsuit involving allegations that Arpaio’s deputies had racially profiled Hispanics, and that arguments contained in the Perez letter “conflated the legal boundaries between two separate and ongoing investigations.

On this day in 1863, Frederick Douglass R-MD met with President Abraham Lincoln R-IL for the first time. Senator Samuel Pomeroy R-KS escorted Douglass to the War Department building. On arrival, Douglass urged Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to allow equal pay for African-American soldiers in the U.S. Army. Though sympathetic, Stanton said that would require congressional approval, which he supported.Next, Douglass was introduced to the president at the White House. Lincoln stood and shook his hand “just as you have seen one gentleman receive another,” Douglass later recounted.

“I at once felt myself in the present of an honest man — on whom I could love, honor and trust without reserve or doubt… Mr. Lincoln was not only a great president, but a great man — too great to be small in anything. Okay, but what about his emotional age?Last week marked Obama’s 49th birthday. The celebration began Wednesday evening at a dinner in Chicago with Oprah Winfrey and officially ended on Sunday at the White House with a barbecue.In between he did run around to various Democratic fundraisers and gave another upbeat speech at a Ford auto plant touting his economic plan as a boon to creating jobs.

Plus I know people at GM who love cars and worked diligently on this car, even if they thought it an answer to a question no one asked. While the Volt looks like smart product planning and business management to the Obama regime – people who don’t know or care about cars – unfortunately, it fails on several levels.Start with a $41,000 list price and with the $7500 Federal tax credit it drops to $33,500. The original thirteen colonies had expanded west to the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, and MA, CT, VA and GA covered much more territory than they do today.Aug. 9, 2010 — America started out as thirteen unfunded yet chartered British colonies, went along for many years in a relatively benign condition of neglect by Britain, developed their own methods of survival, and managed to thrive and prosper in the New World quite well – all without British assistance. As the American colonies thrived, however, Britain started to look at them differently, and sought increasing control over them.

The maturing colonies, however, consistently rejected what they perceived as unrepresented interference and taxation by Britain, and through their Declaration of Independence and open military conflict with Britain, sought for themselves to become free and independent of Britain. The colonists were working toward the freedom and independence of statehood. Early definitions defined the statehood clearly – A State was a sovereign political entity, not simply a territory of a government.

Tony Hayward Was Right. Rush Limbaugh Was Right. Everyone Else Was Wrong

Early in May, Rush Limbaugh said that the Gulf oil spill would resolve on its own: “You do survive these things. I’m not advocating don’t care about it hitting the shore or coast and whatever you can do to keep it out of there is fine and dandy, but the ocean will take care of this on its own if it was left alone and was left out there,” Limbaugh said. “It’s natural. It’s as natural as the ocean water is.” This was met with scorn, of course: “But this spill is of very large dimensions. And the capacity of any natural system has its limits. The oil is in a form that makes it very destructive when it gets to shore… You’re left with residue that is goopy and floats. It’s a story of mousse. If it hits a marsh, or shore, or the beach, it gloms on to everything. We’ve all seem images of birds caught up and it’s devastating to them,” he said. And then poor Tony Hayward made his prediction: ‘The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean,’ he said. ‘The volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.’
