There’s good reason the masses are revolting

My best friends are wonderful people – talented, accomplished, generous, smart and caring. So it’s hard to see them in such fear and pain. The way they see it, the Visigoths have battered down the gates of Rome, and the Vestal Virgins had better scramble for cover.

In the aftermath of Toronto’s election rout, their only consolation is that Rob Ford is probably too stupid and incompetent to completely sack the place. If only they lie low for the next four years, sanity will surely return to city politics.Like my friends, the people who work in much of the major media – the CBC, the Toronto Star, even my own beloved paper – were stunned by the Ford tsunami.

After all, the polls had predicted a squeaker. But there’s another reason they didn’t see the big wave coming. Very few of these people live or work outside downtown Toronto. Very few ever hang around with someone who voted for Mr. Ford and will own up to it. They remind me of the super-smart editorial writers at The New York Times who are sincerely convinced that Tea Partiers are dangerous crackpots – even though they’ve never met any.The media think they understand why people voted as they did. As one Toronto Star pundit helpfully explained, the voters – Ford voters, that is – “were full of largely pointless rage.”

Only pointless rage could explain why voters ignored the editorial endorsements of two leading newspapers, as well as a long line of former mayors who begged them, in the name of decency, to vote for George Smitherman. Even Justin Trudeau’s twinkle dust didn’t work….

In America today, we have become so spooked by “terror threats” that now we will submit to just about anything in the name of security.  At this point, we are allowing ourselves to be treated as little more than cattle.  Procedures that would once be considered an affront to human dignity are now accepted as “the new normal”.  If you want to get on an airplane in America today, you must either go through one of the incredibly intrusive full body scanners that are going into all U.S. airports and let airport security gawk at your exposed body, or you must allow airport security to feel you up using the new “enhanced pat-down” techniques they are being instructed to employ.  As you will see below, these new pat-down procedures are incredibly intrusive.  If anyone tried to touch us like that out on the street they would be put in prison.  But this is the new America where all of us must give up all of our privacy and all of our dignity just so that everyone can feel a little bit safer.

Up until this week, many Americans were not that concerned about the new full body security scanners going into airports across the nation because they still had the alternative of opting for a minimally intrusive pat-down.  But now that has all changed.  It turns out that too many Americans were opting for the pat-down, so now the TSA is rolling out their new “enhanced pat-down” procedures.

Obama Justice Dept. Denies Military Vote, Blames GOP

The head of the Obama Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Tom Perez, admitted this week that he has no real intention of trying to assure that members of our military are afforded their right to vote, and will not attempt in a timely fashion to enforce the MOVE Act Military and Overseas Voter Empower Act intended to make sure that our soldiers get their ballots with time enough to return them so that they can be counted on election day.

Obama to the American people: Let me tell you what your problem is

First, notice that “everything that’s wrong is somebody else’s fault.” Obama mainly blames Republicans. But Republicans have been in the minority in both houses of Congress since 2006. Obama complains that Republicans have not cooperated with him, but he fails to acknowledge that his First Great Experiment TARP was passed with Republican votes.

He fails to mention that except for Cap and Trade, which got derailed by Democrats after the email scandal, he got virtually everything he sought from Congress. What his projection of blame does not consider is that his policies have, for the most part, been failures. Even his top staff, many of whom are bailing out now, have admitted as much.Secondly, and what we would suggest is most telling about his view of the world, is how he views voters. He has repeatedly expressed contempt toward members of the Tea Party Movement. He basically, as expressed in the article linked above, believes the voters are ignorant and more than a little bit looney. And this apparently is endemic in his thinking. You will recall his comments, way before the wheels came off his economic program, about how the masses rely on religion and their guns for solace in tough times. Yet not once have we heard him concede that just maybe the masses are correct.[SNIP]While he complains about the “failed policies of the past that got us in this mess” he shows no understanding that his policies have not worked and no one on his staff is even contending now that they will work, or at least not any time soon.
