So why are we debating a bill to give our government the same power? In George Orwell‘s classic “1984,” the control of information and its flow was critical to Big Brother‘s maintaining his grip on the people and manipulating their passions. Authoritarian governments and dictators worldwide know that lesson well. The ability to see how others live and to exchange ideas is a catalyst to dissent and unrest. The ability to choke off that flow is a necessity for authoritarian governments. The Internet and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have helped fuel democratic movements from our own Tea Party to the Iranian dissidents. It was no surprise that when unrest poured onto the streets of Egyptian cities, the Internet was a major way for protesters to communicate and organize. It was also no surprise that the Egyptian government moved quickly to shut things down.Organizations that track Internet traffic worldwide reported the virtual collapse of the Egyptian Internet at 5:20 a.m. last Thursday, as more than 88% of Egyptian Internet access was shut down.Christopher Williams, technology correspondent for England’s Telegraph newspaper, reports the withdrawal of more than 3,500 of what are called Border Gateway Protocol routes by Egyptian Internet service providers.Excerpt Read more at investors.com …

Many people assume I must be overstating the case and have summarily dismissed my thesis without bothering to read the arguments and even attacking a third party for defending it. The U.S. Department of Justice weighed in on the controversy during the Murfreesboro mosque hearings.U.S. Attorney Jerry E. Martin said his office and the Department of Justice had been watching the lawsuit unfold and couldn’t sit idly by as the opponents questioned whether Islam is a religion or a political movement bent on supplanting United States laws with Muslim laws.“All three branches of government have repeatedly recognized Islam as a religion,” Martin said Monday during an afternoon press conference. “Presidents, as far back as Lincoln and Jefferson and as recent as President George W. Bush, have, indeed, publicly recognized Islam as one of the world’s largest religions.”Excerpt Read more at newenglishreview.org …

Notable is the number of younger members to watch, especially those swept into prominence by the tea party surge. Because this House freshman class – 96 strong, including 87 Republicans – is the largest since 1992, those who speak for them, or claim to, have a leg up. So do those Democrats nimble enough to engage them. Here are ten to watch.Excerpt Read more at csmonitor.com …

James Antle, IIIPosted on Monday, January 31, 2011 4:43:30 PM by SharpRightTurnRand Paul is trying to comprehend Washington’s bizarre customs, starting with the Senate breaking so soon after he was sworn in. “I told people back home in Kentucky that now that I’m a federal employee, I showed up for an hour and they told me to go home for two weeks,” the new Republican senator quipped. But instead of taking it easy, Paul has already engaged in a flurry of legislative activity. ….Paul’s most ambitious effort so far has been the bill he introduced last week to cut $500 billion from the federal budget in one year. You read that correctly — billion with a “b” taking place in a single year. That’s five times more than what the Republican leadership has promised and reduces the current deficit by more than even the Republican Study Committee‘s proposal. The Departments of Education, Energy, and Housing and Urban Development are abolished entirely, with federal energy and housing spending totally zeroed out of the federal budget. The Interior Department sees a 78 percent decrease in funding, State 71 percent, the Commerce Department 54 percent, and Homeland Security 43 percent.Foreign aid, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Government Printing Office, Amtrak, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Commission on Fine Arts are just a few of the programs and agencies that are gone, completely wiped out by these spending cuts. The Smithsonian is privatized…..Paul is also testing the seriousness of those who claim to favor fiscal responsibility and limited government. His bill cuts more in a single year than the president hopes to save after freezing non-defense discretionary spending for five years…..Excerpt Read more at spectator.org …

Corporate US Media’s Woeful, Sanitized Egypt Coverage Amounts To Censorship
Anti-government mass uprising? What anti-government mass uprising?Steve WatsonPrisonplanet.comMonday, Jan 31st, 2011Corporate US Medias Woeful, Sanitized Egypt Coverage Amounts To Censorship 310111mediaWhile the ailing dictatorship government in Egypt is busy rounding up and arresting Al Jazeera journalists in an attempt to control the release of footage and accounts of the mass uprising going on throughout the entirety of the country, the disgraceful corporate American media has once again shown itself to be just as strictly regulated in terms of the content it provides to viewers. In Britain and Canada anyone interested in following the mass unrest in Egypt can simply turn on the television and tune into the English version of Al Jazeera, which has round the clock reports and uninterrupted live footage from journalists on the ground in Cairo and around the rest of the country. The channel has been running and offering its content worldwide since 2006, yet unless you live in certain parts of Ohio, Vermont or Washington, D.C., you cannot even access the channel in the US, because the cable carriers are not interested in allowing you to see it.Occasionally, if you are lucky, Fox News, CNN or MSNBC might break away from reporting on some mindless fluff to show you a short loop of some footage that appeared on Al Jazeera English a few hours previously…

Whether or not they were strict, or whether they were around to discipline at all. But have you ever thought of your parenting style as leaning conservative or liberal?Conservative and liberal philosophies go much deeper than who you vote for. It is a lens by which the world around you is viewed, and how you react to people and to circumstances. Parenting is at its core, the act of passing down your values and preparing your children to enter into society as participating adults.Let’s do a little situation ethics test and see where you fall.Let’s say little Billy and Steve is sitting around the table, playing a game of “Sorry” while you, their mother sits close by.Billy begins to cry. Fear the Muslim Brotherhood
Free RepublicBrowse · Search Pings · Mail News/ActivismTopics · Post ArticleSkip to comments.Fear the Muslim BrotherhoodNational Review ^ | Andrew c. McCarthyPosted on Monday, January 31, 2011 1:10:29 PM by ventanax5At the Daily Beast, Bruce Riedel has posted an essay called “Don’t fear Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood,” the classic, conventional-wisdom response to the crisis in Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood is just fine, he’d have you believe, no need to worry. After all, the Brothers have even renounced violence! One might wonder how an organization can be thought to have renounced violence when it has inspired more jihadists than any other, and when its Palestinian branch, the Islamic Resistance Movement, is probably more familiar to you by the name Hamas — a terrorist organization committed by charter to the violent destruction of Israel. Indeed, in recent years, the Brotherhood a.k.a., the Ikhwan has enthusiastically praised jihad and even applauded — albeit in more muted tones — Osama bin Laden. None of that, though, is an obstacle for Mr. Riedel, a former CIA officer who is now a Brookings scholar and Obama administration national-security adviser. Following the template the progressive and bipartisan foreign-policy establishment has been sculpting for years, his “no worries” conclusion is woven from a laughably incomplete history of the Ikhwan.By his account, Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna “preached a fundamentalist Islamism and advocated the creation of an Islamic Egypt, but he was also open to importing techniques of political organization and propaganda from Europe that rapidly made the Brotherhood a fixture in Egyptian politics.” What this omits, as I recount in The Grand Jihad, is that terrorism and paramilitary training were core parts of Banna’s program. It is by leveraging the resulting atmosphere of intimidation that the Brotherhood’s “politics” have achieved success. The Ikhwan’s activist organizations follow the same program in the United States, where they enjoy outsize political influence because of the terrorist onslaught.Excerpt Read more at nationalreview.com …
WHAT THE SECOND AMENDMENT MEANS…”That’s what “keep and bear” means – own and carry.””
Free RepublicBrowse · Search Pings · Mail News/ActivismTopics · Post ArticleSkip to comments.WHAT THE SECOND AMENDMENT MEANSboblonsberry.com ^ | 01/30/11 | Bob LonsberryPosted on Monday, January 31, 2011 8:51:21 AM by shortstopI believe in the Second Amendment.I believe that when it says “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” that it means exactly that.I believe it is an individual right – just like the rights listed through most of the Bill of Rights – and that it specifically means Americans have a constitutional right to own and carry guns. That’s what “keep and bear” means – own and carry.I believe it as absolute and important a right as the freedom of speech or religion or the press. It stands next to the right to a jury trial and the protection against cruel and unusual punishment. It is as precious as our Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure and our Fifth Amendment protections against self-incrimination and uncompensated government taking of our property. The Constitution isn’t a buffet. Government can’t pick and choose which parts it wants to follow. It is, every bit of it, our founding and defining document, and governmental disregard for it is a fundamental act of tyranny.I believe the Second Amendment is a civil right and the effort to protect the right to keep and bear arms is a civil rights movement. But not everyone feels that way.Snide politicians and professors and pontificators claim that the Second Amendment is about the National Guard, that it is a right given to states, not individuals. They claim that somehow the Founding Fathers thought slipping a states rights issue into a listing of individual rights was a good idea. They claim that the right of the people to keep and bear arms meant that states were authorized to have maintain armies.I think that’s a bunch of crap.I think it’s typically a purposeful distortion of the historic record and common sense in an effort to advance a political agenda. I think people put forward that twisted interpretation of the Second Amendment because they don’t agree with the Second Amendment. They think the people ought not to have guns. And they are free to think that. But they are not free to subvert or pervert the Constitution. Any federal official who does so is violating his oath of office.I believe that the best way to understand what the Second Amendment means today is to look at what it meant when it was written. To help do that, I would like to refer to a document produced in Poughkeepsie, New York, in July of 1788.

“We the People” or We the Judges
Free RepublicBrowse · Search Pings · Mail News/ActivismTopics · Post ArticleSkip to comments.“We the People” or We the JudgesRight Side News ^ | 1/31/2011 | Ronald R Cherry MDPosted on Monday, January 31, 2011 9:51:12 AM by IbJensenRepresentative Henry Waxman D-Calif. recently stated:“When I went to law school they said the law’s what a judge says it is. Whether it is constitutional or not is going to be whether the Supreme Court says it is.”Such an opinion runs counter to that of our Founding Fathers. The men who wrote our Constitution believed that “We the People” should ultimately decide whether or not a law is Constitutional because “We the People” did “ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Our Constitution was not ordained or established by “We the Judges” and therefore Supreme Court Judges should not be the “ultimate arbiters of all Constitutional questions.” Thomas Jefferson specifically refuted the opinion of Henry Waxman in his 1820 letterto William Jarvis:“You seem to consider the judges the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions; a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy… The Constitution has erected no such single tribunal, knowing that to whatever hands confided, with the corruptions of time and party, its members would become despots… I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society, but the people themselves…” Thomas JeffersonIn Marbury vs. Madison the Supreme Court delegated to its self, under Article III, a power to strike down the laws of Congress if the Court believed them to violate our Constitution. This is fine and well, but the question then arises…

What happens in a public place where a group is gathered. Do they lock up half a minibus?’And how about at meetings where it is difficult to pinpoint ‘culprits’?'Children will openly deny having passed bad air and point at an elder. Culturally, this is very embarrassing,’ she said.Another said: ‘We have serious issues affecting Malawians today.
