There are two reasons why Broun’s career is worth examining closely. The first is Broun himself. He compares himself happily to Rep. Ron Paul R-Texas, the anti-war libertarian presidential candidate: Both men are physicians who carry pocket Constitutions and often find themselves on the losing side of congressional votes. Broun likes Paul, but he doesn’t share Paul’s views on Iraq and won’t make a presidential endorsement. The day he was sworn in, Broun joined just 13 other Republicans and 150 Democrats in supporting a bill to call off raids by the Drug Enforcement Administration on medical marijuana distributors. He was one of only four congressmen to oppose the Drug Endangered Children Act, which allocated $20 million to take care of children living among drugs and drug dealers, and one of three to vote against establishing a new registry to keep track of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis “Lou Gehrig’s disease”.
Asked about both votes, Broun hauls out his Constitution and flips it open to Article I, Section 8. “We don’t have authority to create things like that,” he says. “This lists the functions of the federal government, and it’s about a page and a half long. I’d say most of the things this Congress does, we don’t actually have the authority to do.”Broun worries that interpretation of the Constitution has been off for a very long time. “Maybe it was when they decided Marbury v. Madison when the courts hijacked the Constitution,” he says. “I think you can go back to John Adams with the Alien and Sedition Acts that passed when he was president. The thing is, human nature is such that people want to garner more power. What fuels the great growth of government—and I’m talking about more and more centralization from local governments to state governments, from state governments to the federal government—is that basic human nature.”Broun doesn’t share his party’s thinking on what the U.S. should be doing during a “war on terror.”
Asked if he agrees with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney that the biggest threat facing the country is Islamic terrorism, he shakes his head. “No,” he says, “our biggest threat is a lack of understanding of what the Constitution says and what the Founding Fathers meant for it to say. We’ve left that behind.”

President Obama is signaling the Egyptian opposition that their time has come. In a terse statement last night, Mr. Obama announced a “moment of transformation” had arrived in Egypt, “the status quo is not sustainable” and a new government must begin to form “now.” An administration official later reiterated, “the key part of the statement was ‘now.’ ” Today the formerly peaceful protests in Egypt turned violent. It turns out that words do have consequences.Egypt is at a crossroads, a time of suspense when change could come gradually and peacefully, or quickly with maximum instability. The White House has chosen to back the latter course, which will play into the hands of the best organized, most radical factions, which in this case is the America-hating Muslim Brotherhood.The Obama administration is strangely adamant that Muslim religious parties have to play a key role in the new government, and U.S. officials reportedly are reaching out to the Muslim Brotherhood behind the scenes. White House wishes aside, an Islamist government is not in Egypt’s interest and certainly not in the interest of the United States. The Muslim Brotherhood seeks to increase the influence of shariah worldwide and reverse the progress Egypt has made in becoming a more Western, more secular state. Monday’s ruling by federal Judge Roger Vinson that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — a k a ObamaCare — is unconstitutional is a signal event in modern American history. For the first time since FDR browbeat the Supreme Court into accepting most of his New Deal, the Leviathan known as the federal government has been rocked back on its heels.If the administration and the Senate Democrats had any sense, they’d take Judge Vinson’s ruling as a gift, not a setback. Because, whether they know it or not, the judge just handed them an opportunity to get health care right.The House Republicans took a dramatic step forward last month when they passed repeal, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced yesterday that he’ll attach a repeal amendment to a bill authorizing funding for the Federal Aviation Administration as the Senate’s next order of business.Good for him. He didn’t suggest he’s in favor of it. I think what’s important here — what I think he tried to do is to basically express solidarity with the Egyptians in the street, thinking absence of that it would alienate Egyptians and demonstrators. At least you want to make a statement of support. That’s important. There was nothing specific here. The real stuff is happening behind the scenes with the visit of Frank Wisner, the former ambassador who obviously is advising the Egyptians or giving them our input. S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York, working in conjunction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, seized the Web addresses Tuesday. The seizure affidavit was unsealed Wednesday.The websites, which include channelsurfing.net and Spain-based rojadirecta.org, were said to illegally provide access to content from the major professional sports organizations, namely the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. The sites do not host the pirated sporting content themselves, but instead provide links to other websites where people can access it illegally.Government officials argue that the sites are not only distributing pirated content illegally, but in the process, are also denting the revenues of the professional sports leagues and broadcasters as well as negatively impacting viewers.Full story here.
