How Did This Happen?
How did America in the twenty-first century end up with a government that is so highly centralized that the president alone can order the expenditure of hundreds of billions of dollars without the consent of Congress, let alone the public? How did we end up with a government that creates severe economic hardship for average citizens while showering big, politically-connected businesses with literally trillions of dollars in “bailout” money? Is this the real purpose of the Fed, as opposed to all of its happy talk about its supposed duty to “stabilize” the economy? And why is it that the Constitution is completely ignored, if not ridiculed, by the same Washington politicians who all that take an oath to defend the Constitution?
How did the federal judiciary become mere accomplices in our government-for-the-privileged-only “democracy” that routinely tells citizens to get lost whenever they inquire about how their tax dollars are being spent? And is it really desirable to have over half of the entire adult population “on the government dole” in one form or another so that they never oppose an expansion of the state for fear of losing their own subsidies? How and when was this system created?
The answer to all of these questions is that ideas do matter, and that the vast majority of Americans long ago abandoned the Jeffersonian ideas that “that government is best which governs least”; that if we are to have a central government, it must be “bound by the chains of the Constitution”; that the only possible way of controlling the federal Leviathan state is by empowering the citizens through political communities organized at the state and local level (“states’ rights”); that citizens, if left to their own devices, will prosper by pursuing their own self-interests under a rule of law; and that the only legitimate purpose of government is the protection of our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

For many of those years, Republicrud bosses whined that if the people would only give them control of the federal government, they would undo Democrud damage and restore Free Enterprise. Finally, the people gave it to them. Remember? The Republicruds controlled the House, the Senate and the Oval Office long enough to turn the country around. What happened? The Republicruds made our problems much worse. Their spending made the profligate drunken sailor look like Scrooge. They deserved it when the people kicked them out. They lost all credibility.
Yes, there is Dr. Ron Paul. But Dr. No is a political aberration. Time and again, he stands alone. He has neither men’s room problems nor woman problems. He doesn’t take congressional retirement. He actually returns “money” (computer entries) to the federal treasury. He proposes abolishing the Fed and the income tax and replacing them with nothing. In foreign affairs he suggests that we mind our own business. Imagine! But, again, he is an aberration.
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to improve regulation and regulatory review, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. Policy. (a) Wise regulatory decisions depend on public participation and on careful analysis of the likely consequences of regulation. Such decisions are informed and improved by allowing interested members of the public to have a meaningful opportunity to participate in rulemaking. To the extent permitted by law, such decisions should be made only after consideration of their costs and benefits (both quantitative and qualitative).
(b) Executive Order 13563 of January 18, 2011, “Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review,” directed to executive agencies, was meant to produce a regulatory system that protects “public health, welfare, safety, and our environment while promoting economic growth, innovation, competitiveness, and job creation.” Independent regulatory agencies, no less than executive agencies, should promote that goal.
(c) Executive Order 13563 set out general requirements directed to executive agencies concerning public participation, integration and innovation, flexible approaches, and science. To the extent permitted by law, independent regulatory agencies should comply with these provisions as well.
Sec. 2. Retrospective Analyses of Existing Rules. (a) To facilitate the periodic review of existing significant regulations, independent regulatory agencies should consider how best to promote retrospective analysis of rules that may be outmoded, ineffective, insufficient, or excessively burdensome, and to modify, streamline, expand, or repeal them in accordance with what has been learned. Such retrospective analyses, including supporting data and evaluations, should be released online whenever possible.
(b) Within 120 days of the date of this order, each independent regulatory agency should develop and release to the public a plan, consistent with law and reflecting its resources and regulatory priorities and processes, under which the agency will periodically review its existing significant regulations to determine whether any such regulations should be modified, streamlined, expanded, or repealed so as to make the agency’s regulatory program more effective or less burdensome in achieving the regulatory objectives.
Sec. 3. General Provisions. (a) For purposes of this order, “executive agency” shall have the meaning set forth for the term “agency” in section 3(b) of Executive Order 12866 of September 30, 1993, and “independent regulatory agency” shall have the meaning set forth in 44 U.S.C. 3502(5).
(b) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:
(i) authority granted by law to a department or agency, or the head thereof; or
(ii) functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(c) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(d) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.
THE WHITE HOUSE, July 11, 2011.
“…I have little question that as long as this president is in the Oval Office, a real solution is unattainable…”
“[A]fter years of discussions and months of negotiations, I have little question that as long as this president is in the Oval Office, a real solution is unattainable,” McConnell said. “I was one of those who had hoped we could do something big for the country. But in my view the president has presented us with three choices: smoke and mirrors, tax hikes or default. Republicans choose none of the above. I hoped to do good — but I refuse to do harm.”

DOWNLOADABLE FLYER DETAILS CRIMES COMMITTED BY OBAMA PUNISHABLE WITH PRISON TIME
by Neil Turner
Why would anyone in the White House claim a forgery as a copy of his original birth record? Why is Congress pretending that a crime has not been committed?
(Jul. 12, 2011) — This is to notify you of a ‘high Crime’ criminal act that was recently performed (and is still ongoing to date) in plain sight before all of America, and that it now becomes incumbent upon every American Citizen so notified herewith that they have a civic duty to pursue prosecution of this crime, lest they themselves be chargeable with 18 USC Sec. 1028, Part I, Chapter 1, Section 4: Misprision of Felony.
On April 27, 2011, the person commonly known as (but without any proof thereof) Barack Hussein Obama (aka Barry Soetoro), did, with malice and aforethought, publicly display on the official White House website, a blatantly forged document that he claimed to be a copy of his Hawaiian Certificate of Live Birth – in order to obtain and maintain his continued employment within our Federal Government.
One of the crimes (among others) enabled by that forgery is Mispersonization of Identity – a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison. And that same punishment would apply to all those who have aided and abetted in the commission of just this crime alone.
NOTE: This publicly committed and ongoing crime has nothing to do with whether or not Mr. Obama/Soetoro is a natural born Citizen, as required by Article II of the Constitution to be eligible to the Office of President. The actual ‘Birth Certificate’ or location of birth, therefore, is irrelevant to this crime. This is not a ‘Birther’ issue.
Saying the “Senate will absolutely not be a party to a default,” McConnell described a procedure allowing Obama to formally request a debt ceiling increase, for Congress to consider with a “motion to disapprove.”
Only one-third-plus-one votes in the both houses would be needed to raise the debt limit under the plan.
McConnell said spending cuts would not necessarily be a part of the deal, which would raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion in three tranches before the 2012 election.

Independent insurance agents are raising concerns over a General Motors promotion that offers car buyers in the Pacific Northwest a year of free liability and damage insurance from MetLife Auto & Home.
Hoping to put more drivers in Oregon and Washington behind the wheels of its late model cars, General Motors last week announced that drivers in these states who take delivery of a new 2010, 2011 or 2012 GM car, truck or crossover before Sept. 6 will receive a year’s coverage from MetLife Auto & Home, a company which does business through independent agents.

EL PASO – A judge has rejected a plea deal that would have resolved Willie Nelson‘s marijuana possession case in West Texas with a fine, saying the country singer shouldn’t get what she considers special treatment.
Nelson was arrested in November after a Border Patrol agent said 6 ounces of marijuana were found on Nelson’s tour bus.
Judge Becky Dean-Walker told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she rejected prosecutor Kit Bramblett’s suggestion that Nelson resolve the case by pleading guilty and paying a $500 fine for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Dean-Walker claims the prosecutor “doesn’t do that for anybody else.”
The judge says Nelson should be charged with the misdemeanor marijuana possession, which carries up to a year in jail.
In the religious ecstasy of early 2009, when Barack Obama was yet in mid-ascension operating the “Office of the President-Elect” (complete with custom-made seal), he was campaigning hard for his stimulus plan.
On January 10 of that year, the Obama “administration-in-waiting” released a report by its chief economists Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein titled “The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.” The thrust of the report was to show how the stimulus plan was far preferable to doing nothing.
“In the absence of stimulus, the economy could lose another 3 to 4 million more [jobs],” Romer and Bernstein estimated. With the stimulus, “we believe a reasonable range for 2010Q4 is 3.3 to 4.1 million jobs created.”
The report included a handy graph (ours being such a visually motivated society) that showed exactly the choice we faced. Without the recovery plan, unemployment would peak at a whopping and then-unfathomable 9 percent through the first three quarters of 2010.
With the recovery plan, however, unempl

GOP tax pledge causes media meltdown … If moves forward with specific cuts on entitlement programs and Pentagon expenses, Republicans must work aggressively to close loopholes that favor billionaires and multinational corporations. I am quite confident that even tea party members would be fine with Warren Buffett paying more than a 14 percent income tax rate and would be happy to see the world’s largest corporation, GE, pay more in taxes than their own household. There is room for compromise. There is still hope for a grand bargain. But launching hyperbolic attacks at for staying true to their campaign promises only keeps us further away from that final deal. – Politico/Joe Scarborough
Dominant Social Theme: Democrats simply don’t understand the anger that American conservatives feel.
Back in 1776, a group of regional politicians launched an illegal revolt in North America to create a far more lucrative tax jurisdiction, which was then sold to the voters by the marketing slogan of “liberty.” It was officially dedicated to the proposition that all males are created equal, other than kidnapped Africans and their descendants.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether this tax jurisdiction, or any tax jurisdiction so justified and so marketed, can long endure, especially in the face of another group of regional politicians who are trying to pull off a similar stunt in the name of the same slogan.
We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for members of the Union Army who here gave their lives, that this tax jurisdiction might expand. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate – we can not consecrate – we can not sanctify this ground. Half of the brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which half of those who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this jurisdiction, under penalty of perjury, shall have a new birth of revenues, and that government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations, shall not perish from the earth.
“THE PATRIOTIC REVOLUTION…IS HAPPENING NOW”
Do “We the People” need to declare ourselves independent of the government we now have?
(Jul. 12, 2011) — Congress, you are continuing down the path of destroying America. Please realize that we do not need you in our lives as much as you think we do. You are “sucking the oxygen” out of America and its people with all this legislation and big government. Enough is Enough……! Balance the Federal Budget, create a surplus and eliminate our national debt. No more games. No more rhetoric. Eliminate 47 % of our Federal government of structure and bureaucracy. Stop foreign aid until we start running surpluses in our budget. Stop funding the United Nation. We need term limits on elected officials more now than ever. We need resignations of all those that are corrupt and inept. As well, start eliminating Federal Legislation that violates our Constitution and the “Sovereignty” of our States and Local authorities. Start now in de-legislating and eliminate all unnecessary rules and regulations. Start a ‘Fair Tax” as you eliminate the IRS. Dissolve the Federal Reserve (nothing but a money cartel) and move the responsibilities to the Department of Treasury. Go to work to reduce government and spending NOW! Disallow all lobbyists and special interests groups. You work only for the People, no one else! And while you are at it, close down the Department of Energy, Homeland Security, Department of Education, EPA. If only I were President for a month!
Ron Paul Will Not Run for Congress Again
Ron Paul, the amazing and principled politician, is not running for Congress again. It’s the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one. But why is Ron not running, after finally getting a little of what he is due with his monetary committee? He has been thinking about this for some time, and wants to concentrate on the presidential campaign and future and enhanced educational efforts that will blow your socks off. Also, he has had it – to name just a few items – with: twice weekly groping by the TSA (since he has metal knees and is selected for the full feel-up every time); dealing with the crooks and creeps in Congress, especially in the rotten Texas delegation; and the deadly new district the Republicans have placed him in. There are sad aspects to this, of course. He has been the greatest congressman in American history, by many leagues. But I predict that he will have even more and even more lasting influence as he uses his moral authority for teaching freedom, peace, and Austrian economics outside of politics. More later.

Despite the continued protestations by Obama/Soetoro supporters and professional liars in the dominant media, there is no question the usurper camped out in the White House was never eligible to run for president of these united States of America. All the huffing, puffing, vile name calling and protesting does not and cannot alter the legal fact that Obama/Soetoro was born with dual citizenship. It is his father’s citizenship status at the time Obama/Soetoro was born that clearly makes him ineligible to be president.
We’re all aware of the 40 or so lawsuits filed to expose Obama/Soetoro’s perfidy and the decisions rendered by cowardly federal judges using the cop out – “standing” – as their justification in tossing the lawsuits. We’re all aware that even though tens of thousands of Americans demanded the electoral college not certify the vote for the impostor on the ballot, they also proved to be gutless cowards or political hacks who value party loyalty over the U.S. Constitution. The final stop on the way to certifying an ineligible candidate was the U.S. Congress who sat on their cowardly backsides, January 9, 2009, knowing full well there were millions of Americans questioning the legitimacy of Obama/Soetoro’s eligibility. Yet, not a single member of Congress (and that includes Ron Paul) stood up on the floor and objected. There is an orderly procedure that could have been triggered had one member of the Outlaw Congress stood up. Instead, they all stood down and here we are today with a constitutional crisis that is not going away.
As Obama/Soetoro clearly was never eligible to run for the presidency, once he “took” office, he legally became a usurper. That action is defined as: to seize and hold (a position, office, power, etc.) by force or without legal right: The pretender tried to usurp the throne.
Now, we either believe in the supreme law of the land or we pursue an alternative path that sets a horrible legal precedent. What do I mean by that? You cannot impeach a usurper. To do so (even if the House were to file charges) would be to give legitimacy to Obama/Soetoro holding the office of president. That already happened once in our history with Chester Arthur. We cannot allow it to happen again no matter how frustrated and enraged we are about the actions of that empty suit sullying the people’s house. To give legitimacy to his presidency would cement all the bills he signed into law as if they were valid under the U.S. Constitution.
“In a free society, government reflects the soul of its people. If people want change at the top, they will have to live in different ways. Our major social problems are not the cause of our decadence. They are a reflection of it.” — Cal Thomas
You’ve undoubtedly heard the old wives’ tale about frogs and boiling water. If you toss a frog into boiling water, he’ll immediately jump out — but supposedly, if you increase the temperature just a bit at a time, the frog will sit comfortably in the water until he’s cooked alive. Is that true? No. However, if you apply that story to the way that human beings behave, there’s a lot of truth to it. The world is extraordinarily complex and human beings are remarkably adaptable; so it’s entirely possible that if changes are incremental enough, people will adjust to “the way the world is” without truly examining the size of the shift that’s changed their world.
In the last few decades, our country has spiraled downward into decadence in ways that are genuinely threatening the continuance of the American Dream.
1) Our legal system is broken: There’s nothing just about our legal system anymore. Liberals have pushed the idea of a “living constitution,” which means nothing more than implementing left-wing policies and calling it constitutional law. Every constitutional case is now decided by the number of judges who still believe in the Constitution that happen to be on the bench for the trial. Laws are no longer applied equally either. If the people running the government don’t like certain laws, say against illegal immigration, they simply refuse to enforce it.
Getting beyond that, because lawyers have become a corrupt parasitic class in America, innocent people can be crushed by the cost of defending themselves in court, even if
Back in 1791, when the First Amendment was adopted, little did our forefathers know how History would develop and how progress would go, beyond their wildest imagination.
Something is sure: the men who brought about the First Amendment in its integrity would never have done so if they would have imagined the irresponsible approach taken by our society, that has made acceptable an ugly mood of intolerance that is, to say it mildly, not only blurring our mind, but also undermining our judgement blocking our ability to defend ourselves, our people, our country, against a silent and creepy Islamic invasion of America -with our governments’ tacit help.
Origins Creating The US Department Of Homeland Security, By Executive Order Was Illegal November 20, 2007 Gunny G (Reblog)
Origins Creating The US Department Of Homeland Security, By Executive Order Was Illegal
Origins Creating The US Department Of Homeland Security, By Executive Order Was Illegal
The sole branch of this government that is responsible for creating legislation is the legislative branch the Congress of the United States. However – the US Department of Homeland Security was created directly by Presidential Executive Order No 13228, below.
“By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:”
George W. Bush is claiming a “right under the Constitution” that does NOT exist!
Article One, Section 1. of the United States Constitution says: ” All legislative powers herein shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.” There is no mention anywhere of the “right” of the Executive to create anything like the largest single agency this government has ever had – as this ‘department’ absorbed 22 separate existing agencies (that were created by congress) into one that answers only to the executive.
Therefore the ‘creation’ of Homeland Security – is in direct violation of Article One, Section 1, of the US Constitution, as the executive branch had no authority to create any legislation – much less whole departments of the government – only the congress can do this under the Constitution: Therefore – this Executive Order is itself unconstitutional on its face and must be rescinded! Please see the full text of this illegal order below, as issued by the White House on Oct. 8, 2001
As Obama hands America’s trucking industry to dangerous Mexican trucks Hoffa bleats like a sheep « Coach is Right
Not content with soaring unemployment numbers and destroying our banking housing healthcare auto making and oil drilling industries (to name just a few) Barack Obama has just handed Mexico virtual control of the American trucking industry.
One of Obama’s most useful idiots, putative Republican U.S. Secretary Transportation Ray LaHood, traveled to Mexico City to sign the “agreement” far from our gaze as he made certain America’s humiliation was complete.
By ratifying a so-called “pilot” program to allow Mexican junk wagons disguised as long haul trucks onto the highways we pay for Obama has handed his pal Felipe Calderón another way to sneak undocumented fraudulent Democrat voters all over our nation.
Unless a lawsuit brought by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is successful, within weeks Mexican trucks, many of which are American fleet castoffs, will be found in every corner of our country.
Mexican Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL) the essential document for all truckers do exist, but they are just as easily purchased on Mexican streets as any other phony documents. Drug testing of Mexican drivers will be done by Mexican laboratories not a single one of which in the whole of Mexico is certified to American standards.
At a time when violence in Mexico is at catastrophic levels and pressure to escape is reaching explosive highs why would Obama want to help provide a way to funnel more illegal aliens into our nation at the risk of infuriating unionized truckers?
One obvious answer is
It is no secret that government schools across the United States have become indoctrination centers for the spreading of a social gospel that is anathema to the values of the majority of American parents. Public education is largely run by union bosses and liberal school boards protecting incompetent educrats who push an agenda that has nothing to do with teaching children how to think and everything to do with teaching them what to think. Hitler, Stalin and Mao would be proud.
You may be surprised to learn that this disease of so-called progressive education has spread far beyond the borders of blue states and big cities, and is now infecting even the most conservative areas of the country. Thanks to 21st century communications combined with a desire to be considered tolerant, diverse and multi-cultural, and facilitated by a dictatorial federal Department of Education, local school boards across the fruited plain are joyfully leaping into the propaganda business in direct defiance of the will of the people they purport to serve. In fact, this clash of standards has been brought to the heartland in one of the reddest of our red states.

Facebook – the CIA conspiracy … Facebook has 20 million users worldwide, is worth billions of dollars and, if internet sources are to be believed, was started by the CIA. The social networking phenomenon started as a way of American college students to keep in touch. It is rapidly catching up with MySpace, and has left others like Bebo in its wake.
But there is a dark side to the success story that’s been spreading across the blogosphere. A complex but riveting Big Brother-type conspiracy theory, which links Facebook to the CIA and the US Department of Defence. The CIA is, though, using a Facebook group to recruit staff for its very sexy sounding National Clandestine Service.
The story starts once Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had launched, after the dorm room drama that’s led to the current court case. Facebook’s first round of venture capital funding ($US500,000) came from former Paypal CEO Peter Thiel. Author of anti-multicultural tome The Diversity Myth, he is also on the board of radical conservative group VanguardPAC.
The second round of funding into Facebook ($US12.7 million) came from venture capital firm Accel Partners. Its manager James Breyer was formerly chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, and served on the board with Gilman Louie, CEO of In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm established by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1999. One of the company’s key areas of expertise is in “data mining technologies.”
A few weeks ago Norman Lear productions using the “free-enterprise system” had a “reunion” of the characters in “All In The Family” and for one solid hour ran hilarious clips of previous programs. When they were on during the Nixon era (latter 60s and early 70s), I had trouble watching it. This time I laughed at bigoted old Archie Bunker played by Carroll O’Connor and wondered if Archie wasn’t sort of a harbinger to “hate” legislation because everything he disliked is the “political correct” agenda today.
Norman Cousin, a New Age guru with the human potential movement believes laughter is the best medicine and in his 1999 book Fighting Cancer says some hospitals have put laughing rooms in the oncology department. In William M. Bowen, Jr.’s 1984 book Globalism – America’s Demise, he identified Cousins as a member of Norman Lear’s “People for the American Way.” I didn’t like obstinate Archie when the series first ran. The voice of Edith, his wife, played by Jean Stapleton was annoying. At the beginning of each program she is playing the piano and singing a duet with Archie, “Those Were The Days” when men were men and girls were girls (today we can’t tell the difference) and there was no welfare state and every body pulled their weight. Those were the days! Now TV Land is running three old programs each week day night so I’ve been watching and comparing what people may have said then as to what they say today.

(Sorry – Source Unknown)
I tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to
Ever heard the phrase – you can’t get blood from a turnip…? Sounds like a silly old analogy from days gone by, but it happens to remain true today. People who can’t pay taxes don’t pay taxes, and that’s why people, who can pay, will always pay for everyone. Fairness isn’t even part of the equation.
In his July 11 Part III of his Economic Vision statement, presidential candidate Herman Cain does his best to pitch the “Fair Tax” – a libertarian economic proposal that offers to replace the federal income tax with a national sales (consumption) tax.
The Fair Tax concept would replace a federal tax on gross income with a national sales tax on everything you purchase. The allure is the idea of no more withholdings from your paycheck and that idea is embraced by a lot of people who are sick and tired of working 1/3 of their job for the federal government and then watching the federal government waste their earnings and then some.
But the problems with a national sales tax are significant
• The tax rate would be at least 30% in order to deal with the insane level of federal spending
• A direct 30% tax on consumer activity will absolutely reduce consumer activity
• A consumer driven economy must have healthy consumer activity
• We would pay taxes…………………………
The freshman senator has also warned that the United Nations would force the U.S. to “CONFISCATE and DESTROY” all “unauthorized” civilian firearms and wants to build a massive, highly-guarded wall along the Mexican border.
The Southern Poverty Law Center also included U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce (R) on the list of extremists. Most of those on the list are prominent neo-Nazis, white supremacists, anti-government militiamen, and Klu Klux Klansmen.
The quarterly Intelligence Reports have monitored radical right hate groups and extremists in the United States since 1981.
What is it going to take to convince Republicans in the House that raising the debt ceiling is the wrong thing to do, no matter what?
Maybe a few polls?…
How about this, Obama, Pelosi and Reid rammed Obamacare down our throats while we protested, marched, emailed, called and pleaded with them not to. The American public was consistently against that bill, but they did it anyway.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that only 1 in 4 high-school seniors scored at least “proficient” in knowledge of U.S. citizenship. Civics and history were American students’ worst subjects. Professor Damon said that for the past 10 years, his Stanford University research team has interviewed broad cross sections of American youths about U.S. citizenship. Here are some typical responses: “We just had (American citizenship) the other day in history. I forget what it was.” Another said, “Being American is not really special. … I don’t find being an American citizen very important.” Another said, “I don’t want to belong to any country. It just feels like you are obligated to this country. I don’t like the whole thing of citizen. … It’s like, citizen, no citizen; it doesn’t make sense to me. It’s, like, to be a good citizen – I don’t know, I don’t want to be a citizen. … It’s stupid to me.”
A law professor, whom Damon leaves unnamed, shares this vision in a recent book: “Longstanding notions of democratic citizenship are becoming obsolete. … American identity is unsustainable in the face of globalization.” Instead of commitment to a nation-state, “loyalties … are moving to transnational communities defined by many different ways: by race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, and sexual orientation.” This law professor’s vision is shared by many educators who look to “global citizenship” as the proper aim of civics instruction, de-emphasizing attachment to any particular country, such as the United States, pointing out that our primary obligation should be to the universal ideals of human rights and justice. To be patriotic to one’s own country is seen as suspect because it may turn into a militant chauvinism or a dangerous “my country, right or wrong” vision.
I am describing a run on the United States government. This will be a withdrawal of cash financing from the U.S. government. This is the ultimate credit crisis upheaval. This will be accompanied by mass social unrest and political reorganization. Stock and bond prices will fall sharply. The S & P 500 will lose at least 60 percent. Government bonds will yield at least 10 percent. This event is foreseeable. It is also avoidable, but not without much pain and travail. Hence, although foreseeable and avoidable, it may still occur.
Whether we like it or not, we are all currency speculators now. This is hardly a burden we can relish.
Whether or not a run on the United States government occurs is in the hands of its creditors. It depends on their trust in the dollar. Their trust depends on their understanding of America’s political economy.
One explanation for this surely is the wave of foreclosures on subprime mortgages, a large share of which were held by African-Americans.
Ominously, things are likely to get worse, because Bill Clinton’s assertion, “The era of big government is over!” is today palpably true.
Not only in Wisconsin, Ohio and New Jersey, run by Republicans, is this so, but in liberal mega-states like New York and California. There, Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Jerry Brown run the show, and government payrolls are also being slashed and government pensions pared back.
The subject that I am appointed to discuss is the theory of education in the United States. This discussion has its difficulties. It brings us face to face with a good many serious disappointments. It calls for the re-examination and criticism of a good many matters which seemed comfortably settled, and which we would rather leave undisturbed. The most discouraging difficulty about this discussion, however, is that apparently it cannot lead to any so-called practical conclusion; certainly not to any conclusion, as far as I can see, which will at all answer to the general faith in machinery as an effective substitute for thought, and the general reliance upon machinery alone to bring about any and all forms of social improvement.
If Socrates had come before the Athenians with some fine new piece of machinery like a protective tariff, workmen’s compensation, old-age pensions, collective ownership of the means of production, or whatnot – if he had told them that what they must do to be saved was simply to install his piece of machinery forthwith, and set it going – no doubt he would have interested a number of people, perhaps enough to put him in office as the standard-bearer of an enlightened and progressive liberalism. When he came before them, however, with nothing to say but “Know thyself,” they found his discourse unsatisfactory, and became impatient with him.
So if a discussion of our educational theory could be made to lead to something that we might call “constructive” – that is to say, something that is immediately and mechanically practicable, like honor schools or a new type of housing or a new style of entrance examinations – one might hope to make it rather easily acceptable. There seems no way to do this. The only large reforms indicated by a thorough discussion of the topic are such as must be put down at once as quite impracticable on general grounds, and the minor mechanical changes that are indicated seem also impracticable on special grounds, besides having the appearance of uncertain value and therefore being unlikely to command interest.
Turns out, you’re not imagining it.
Yellow intervals have been shortened at traffic lights in many areas around the country, courtesy of the government officials responsible for writing national transportation guidelines. Some signals stay yellow only about 70 percent as long as they did 15 years ago. And here’s a curious thing: The change in signal timing intervals coincides with the much-discussed rise in the incidence of red light-running.
Put another way, more people are getting caught in the middle of an intersection after the light has changed from yellow to red. Is it a coincidence that decreased yellow timing and “red light running” track together?
Certainly, there are people who deliberately run red lights – irrespective of the yellow interval. These are the jerks who enter an intersection when the light is already red. But the majority are people who entered the intersection when the light was still yellow – but didn’t get through before it cycled to red. Many probably decided that they could not come to a stop safely (and without risking being rear-ended by the car behind them) before the light transitioned from yellow to red.
So they keep on going – because of the shortened yellow interval, which gives them neither time to stop safely nor enough time to clear the intersection before the light changes.
They “run” the light.
And, if there’s a camera around, they’ll get a ticket in the mail a week or so later.
Okay, Chip Reid of CBS News asked the President a couple of tough question yesterday and here is the exchange, unless you were watching C-Span you surely did not see it on CBS News later in the evening. This exchange goes on from 11:47-18:48 in the video on C-Span web site. I wrote a sloppy draft here but you can go over to C-Span and view the whole exchange. Now, what fate will Chip Reid suffer for challenging the President since the rest of the media cheer leading squad were on their knees as usual.
