Is America Caught In The Closed Mind Trap? : Information Clearing House: ICH
A reader responded to my recent column about how the US president was becoming a Caesar with a question: “Wouldn’t a Caesar be preferable to a democracy in which the people are too ignorant, disinterested, and stupid to engage in self-government?”
Before I became a widely read columnist with many reader responses, I would have disagreed with the reader’s characterization of the American people. Today, I cannot answer the reader’s question with a “no” as confidently as I would like.
I receive appreciative words from many readers who are well aware of what is going on.
I also hear from many who are so partisan and have such strong emotional responses that they are unable to follow an argument. I don’t know what percentage these groups comprise in the population, but there seem to be a number of Americans, both on the left and the right, who are prepared to censor and even to kill in order to defend their illusions and delusions.
I remain a suspect bogyman for some on the left, because of my association with the Kemp-Roth bill and Reaganomics. As I, and others, have explained so many times, Supply-Side economics reversed the monetary/fiscal policy mix in order to cure stagflation. But some leftists persist in their insistence that it was all a trick to cut taxes for the rich–the rich being those with more money than they. A stressed-out $100,000 a year guy with a family in a high-cost city is thrown into the rich class with the hedge fund manager who paid himself one billion dollars.
To give the leftists their due, at least they know that I was a member of the Reagan administration. However, the right-wing zealots think that I am a pinko-liberal-commie.
Recently I wrote an article pointing out that the Republicans had picked a bad time, when the world was already concerned about US financial credibility, to make an issue over the routine increase of the debt ceiling, thus creating an impasse that threatens default. The Republicans see in the debt ceiling issue an opportunity to cut social spending as the price of allowing an increase in the national debt.

A senior officer in General David Petraeus’s support staff, who was fired for publicly criticising the US military’s “PowerPoint culture”, has issued a fresh broadside against what he says is a bloated, ineffective bureaucracy at America’s headquarters in Afghanistan.
Colonel Lawrence Sellin was fired from his role after he wrote a column attacking the system for using relentless slide-show presentations to “cognitively challenged” generals instead of formulating coherent policy.
Col Sellin, a 61-year-old army reservist, said he had no regrets about his action and that others at the main base of the International Security Assistance Force in Kabul congratulated him for speaking out. “I am not sorry at all. I think there are a lot of people who feel this way even on Petraeus’s own staff,” he told Army Times. “Colonels came up to me and shook hands and said ‘you were right’.”

I wish I could support John McCain and as a fellow returned POW. I have found I am expected to support him, but I cannot. If I cannot support him, then the next best thing I find is that I am expected to remain mute and say nothing. As I have proven in a terrible jungle prison, I have the ability to remain mute in the face of those who wished to trade me my very life for just a few words. My remaining mute then, is the driving factor behind my feeling compelled to speak out now.
When John was blown from the sky over that lake in Hanoi, did the enemy already know whose son he was? No, they did not until John told them. He was seriously hurt in his ejection and he needed medical attention. In exchange for what the rest of us would call “First Class” care, he talked. He not only told them who his father, the Admiral was, but he expounded in detail on the Chain of Command and then built himself up by describing himself as one of the “very best pilots”. You will not find this form of “resistance” in the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) or in the Code of Conduct. As a matter of fact, it is expressly forbidden. Now, if the US Navy wants to give John a pass on this, it is all right with me, but that free pass negated John’s pointing fingers at others, or at least it should have. Just ask Robert Garwood, or anyone else who crosses him, if he is a finger pointer. He is the worst.
After McCain was recovered from his wounds, did he cease and desist from making propaganda? The answer is an emphatic “NO”. So we go back to the same question again: Should John get a free pass on this from the Navy? Well, the Navy and some of the Air Force got together and supported the “Return with Honor” scenario….

A Conservative Revolt in Full
For conservatives, President Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment prohibiting Republicans from engaging in internecine warfare is no longer inviolable.
What for months had been a quiet campaign to pressure the GOP into a more conservative footing has, over the course of the debt limit negotiations, blossomed into a full-blown insurrection, led by Republican Steering Committee Chairman Jim DeMint (S.C.) in the Senate and Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (Ohio) in the House.
And at a Wednesday Conference meeting, the conflict was exposed raw, as Republicans dressed down Jordan for his tactics.
According to aides familiar with the situation, Paul Teller, the RSC’s executive director, and top DeMint aides, including Communications Director Wesley Denton, have worked closely for years in coordinating their work.
DeMint has led efforts to coordinate with the House Republican Study Committee.
“We’ve worked a lot with the House guys,” DeMint said, particularly with regard to raising the debt ceiling. “I think a lot of the [conservative] folks feel like the plans that are being presented are more political than they are solving our debt problem.”
To a large degree, the cooperation makes sense: The RSC and the Steering Committee act as the conservative caucuses for their respective chambers, and the groups view themselves as the “conscience” of the GOP.
“A lot of us are frustrated that a few people go behind closed doors and try to make all of the decisions. I am not sure that is going to work, because it’s not just us, but I think it is a whole lot of people around the country feel left out of the process. We try to be their voice here,” DeMint said, adding, “I think we’ve created our own table. I am not sure we have a seat at the table as much as we have another table.”

For at least the past half-century Christian pastors and churches have been all but neutered. In reality, the American church today, on the whole, is not even a church. It is a government corporation whose loyalty is offered first to Caesar, not to Christ, and whose message is first politically correct before it is Biblically correct.

CALLER: Rush, what if all the things that they say are going to happen, happen? It will be blamed on the Republican Party, and it will be four more years of Obama. With this, we at least have fought the good fight. We have another election in 2012. We get more people in that think like we do, and we make the real changes that need to be made.
RUSH: I don’t know. If we do the wrong plan here we’ve just reelected Obama.
CALLER: No. Rush, this is a step in the right direction. We’ll still be able to run. All of our leaders will be able to say, “We would have done more if we had more of the right people in government,” but they’re just not there, Rush. We don’t have the Senate, don’t have the White House.
RUSH: I guarantee if they say that, it’s hello third party, ’cause it’s Obama who’s on the ropes.
CALLER: Rush, third party equals Obama reelection.
RUSH: I know! That’s exactly what I’m telling you.
CALLER: Everybody in the Tea Party needs to understand that, that third party equals Obama reelection.
RUSH: I know, and you’re giving me the architectural mechanism to create a third party here.

My FRiends, it’s becoming more and more obvious every day that Obama and the Democrats are out to purposely destroy America. They’re using crisis mode to piece by piece dismantle the constitution. First it was the too big to fail crisis that led to the unconstitutional TARP program, the feds unconstitutionally taking over private sector corporations, the unconstitutional bailouts and the unconstitutional trillion dollar porkulus package. Follow that with the unconstitutional federal takeover of our healthcare system and his unconstitutional bypass of the senate’s advice and consent function regarding presidential appointments (czars). Then it was thumbing his nose at the congress by conducting and continuing war in Libya without congressional approval.
Now, his multi-trillion dollar big spending programs have led to a so-called “debt crisis.” It’s not a debt crisis, it’s a spending crisis. And it’s now clear that the president has no intention of working with the congress to decrease spending or use a constitutional solution to the debt. He has avoided stating any plan to the American people because he has no valid constitutional plan. Instead, he plans on invoking (twisting) the 14th amendment by executive order to raise the debt limit by presidential decree. He plans to completely ignore the constitution and bypass the U.S. Congress!
This would be the constitutional crisis of the century. We ain’t seen nothing yet. This would make Nixon look like a Boy Scout and the constitutional crisis of the 70′s a church picnic. If Obama does this, political blood will flow in the streets. Impeached or not, this will be political suicide for Obama and the democrats. Bring it on!!
And still, the Republicans are falling all over each other trying to come up with a bipartisan plan to solve the “debt crisis” when all they really need to do is pass a budget that gets spending under control. We don’t need higher taxes, we don’t need an increase in the debt limit, we don’t need a balanced budget amendment and we don’t need wimpy spending cuts that are scheduled to take place some time in the future. And we sure as hell don’t need to bend over for the democrats. The Republicans control the House and the House controls the spending, the taxes, the deficit and the debt.
So, control it, already! Hold the line! Reinforcements are coming in 2012! Do not retreat, do not surrender, do not cave, do not make a deal with the devil. Congressional deadlock would be far better than capitulation or continuing down the current bankruptcy path. Worst case, no debt limit increase would force spending cuts.
In our current crisis, government is not the solution; government is the problem. –RR
This is no time for the Republicans to lose faith in conservative principle or go wobbly. Please call or write your congressional reps and urge them to hold the line!!
And if Obama dares trying to rule by executive order, let the games begin!!

Laura Ingraham got the man of the hour on her show this morning, who confirmed that he did indeed tell the House Republican caucus to “get their asses in line” to pass his debt-ceiling proposal — once the rewrite comes in. Speaker John Boehner also explained how he and Mitch McConnell would keep the deficit-reduction commission it creates from raising taxes, especially — as Boehner reminds us — some tax hikes are already in place. Boehner explains that he wants to push the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, but he wants to make sure that he and a Republican Senate can present it to a Republican President in 2013:

The key in this decision by Boehner seems to be his assessment that the GOP will lose leverage the closer we get to the deadline — whenever that might be. If that’s true, then Boehner is making a smart play by consolidating what rhetorical gains the GOP has made in this debate and getting to a rapid conclusion. After watching the Gang of Six play last week in the Senate take the momentum out of the CCB Act, it’s not hard to see why Boehner came to that conclusion. Can Boehner succeed in whipping his caucus to get the needed majority to pass his plan? At the moment, that seems iffy — but Boehner has had a good track record in holding his caucus in line over the last four years.

News media using Beck to smear Israel?
EL AVIV – Scores of major news media outlets published pictures of Glenn Beck in Israel while reporting on the radio host’s seemingly unrelated controversial comments regarding a Norwegian summer camp that was the site of a shooting massacre last week.
In a radio segment Monday morning on “The Glenn Beck Program,” the former Fox News star described the deadly attack “as a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like the Hitler Youth. I mean who sends their kids to a political camp?”
Beck was referring to the shooting last week allegedly carried out by Anders Behring Breivik at a Norwegian Labor Party youth camp, killing at least 68 people, many teenagers, and wounding 66.
It was the second attack blamed on Breivik that day. He is also accused of exploding a car bomb in downtown Oslo, near the offices of the Norwegian prime minister and several other governmental buildings. The explosion killed eight people and wounded 26.
Beck’s remarks about the summer camp received a significant amount of news media coverage.
Some major media outlets reporting on the comments published images of Beck in Israel even though none of the reports mentioned the Jewish state.
Beck visited Israel earlier this month to address the Knesset, the country’s parliament. On Aug. 24, Beck is planning a rally in Israel called “Restoring Courage.” The event is purportedly a follow up to Beck’s massive “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington, D.C., last summer.

Tea Party leader calls for John Boehner to step down (“He is in the process of surrendering”)
Tea Party Nation leader Judson Phillips called on House Speaker John Boehner “to go” and be replaced by a “Tea Party Speaker of the House” in a blog post Wednesday morning, the same day that Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, said that her group was looking into the same idea.
“Now Boehner is in the process of surrendering again. He is surrendering not to [President] Obama, but to the status quo in Washington,” Phillips wrote. “The House passed Cut, Cap and Balance, which would cut $111 billion from the budget. It would cap spending and set a good course for the future.”
Martin sounded a similar theme at a breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor, saying that in a just-completed poll of their members, four-fifths are not satisfied with Boehner and nearly three-quarters would like to have a new Speaker of the House.
“Maybe we should see about a different Speaker right away,” she said.
Philips was more strident in his criticism. “Boehner has no real interest in solving the problems this country faces. … He worships at the altar of massive spending,” he wrote. “We need a Speaker who is a leader. We need someone with courage and vision. Boehner has none of those qualities. He is not a leader.”
Phillips urged readers to call their legislators and advocate for Boehner “to go” and be replaced by a “Tea Party Speaker of the House.”

Obama’s ineligibility: Prepare to defend America – Time to act
Every federal official, who swore to support and defend the Constitution, has violated that oath by allowing an ineligible individual to usurp the office of President.
If that was not bad enough, the entire government has ignored overwhelming evidence that Obama has committed felonies both before and during his occupation of the White House; in particular, the Certificate of Live Birth presented by Obama on April 27, 2011 being a forgery.
By allowing Obama and his extreme left-wing supporters to violate the Constitution and conduct criminal behavior in such a brazen and arrogant manner, those cowardly and complicit government officials have set precedents of illegality of such magnitude, which, if not checked now, will eventually destroy the country.
Basically, the government has accepted the premise that certain people under certain circumstances are indeed above the law.
It isn’t a speed bump; it’s a train wreck. We are already on a slippery slope toward lawlessness, chaos and fragmentation.

How the Heat Wave Started
The recent, record-setting heat wave appears to have been triggered by a little-noticed patch of storm activity off the western coast of Central America.
Descriptions abound of the so-called heat dome, a zone of high atmospheric pressure that pushed warm air down over the central and eastern United States, then held it for a sweltering week.
But with the average evening news weather map ending at U.S. borders, the heat dome seemed to come from nowhere. Of course that’s not the case.
“Subsiding” — descending — “air over the United States is associated with the heat wave. Where is the air subsiding from? There has be upwards motion somewhere,” said Kevin Trenberth, head of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

President Obama is targeting critics in the media. As his poll numbers continue to decline and his re-election chances grow dimmer by the day, he is increasingly resorting to authoritarian tactics. His latest move: The Justice Department is preparing subpoenas as part of a preliminary investigation into News Corp.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. is on a witch hunt. He is seeking to intimidate and smear some of the administration’s most articulate opponents. Mr. Holder’s investigation represents a direct assault upon basic press freedoms. It aims to expand the government’s involvement in how journalists operate, attempting to probe the practices of media outlets – especially those that refuse to mouth the administration’s radical liberalism.

Mr. Obama’s impulses are those of an authoritarian socialist. He has publicly demonized Fox News, referring to it as “an illegitimate” media organization. He has called for the Fairness Doctrine to be imposed, which would muzzle conservative talk radio. He wants to create a national civilian police corps answerable to the president. He is waging an illegal and unconstitutional war in Libya. He has appointed countless policy “czars” who possess vast Cabinet-level powers without the Senate’s advice and consent. He has seized and nationalized vast sectors of the economy.
Mr. Obama’s approach to the law, to the media and to his opponents is Nixonian – a flagrant and contemptuous disregard for the Constitution. Mr. Obama embodies a perverse mix of Saul Alinsky and Nixon, one a rabid leftist activist and the other a political street thug. News Corp. is simply his next victim unless a public outcry stops him.

The rhetoric was heightened yesterday when White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer warned that the GOP’s inability to compromise “could potentially put us towards a depression,” adding, “we are seven days away from an unprecedented financial event in this country’s history.”
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who has been busy hyping the inevitability of a default for weeks, again told news shows Sunday that the government would be unable to pay its bills if an agreement is not reached, a talking point that has been enthusiastically parroted by President Obama.
However, that tone doesn’t quite match with what the Obama administration is simultaneously telling top executives at major U.S. banks, assuring them that “such an event won’t happen.””

President Obama has said that he will not resort to the various powers open to him to keep the government running should Congress fail to deliver a debt ceiling increase. This is a suspicious statement, as it is not credible that a president would leave troops at war unpaid and without supplies, Social Security checks unsent and stand aside while the US dollar collapses and the credit rating of the US government is destroyed.
There are national security directives and executive orders already on the books, as well as the 14th Amendment, that Obama can invoke to set aside the debt ceiling. Congress would sigh with relief that Obama had prevented the lawmakers from destroying the country.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Monday that he is giving Congress ten days to pass a constitutional amendment that would make raising taxes nearly impossible. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, he will do everything in his power to force the U.S. to default on its debts.
“Okay, in ten days you want to change the United States Constitution by two-thirds vote in both houses?” Matthews asked. “That’s what you’re demanding.”
“Yes,” Lee admitted. “If possible we can’t change the Constitution just in Congress but we can submit it to the states. Let the states fight it out.”
“You want the Democratic Senate, by a two-thirds vote, to pass a constitutional amendment or you want the house to come down?” Matthews pressed.
“Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying and I’ve been saying this for six months,” Lee said.
Lee’s amendment would require a two-thirds majority to raise taxes, making future tax hikes nearly impossible. He would also require spending to return to 1996 levels.
