Pencils and Liberty by Gary North
Back in 1958, Leonard E. Read wrote what has become the most popular essay ever written in defense of the free market. It was better than Frederic Bastiat‘s 1850 essay on a broken window as destructive, not productive. It was as clever as Bastiat’s humorous petition of the candlemakers calling for laws against the ruinous competition from the sun. Milton Friedman recommended it highly.
Leonard Read’s delightful story, “I, Pencil,” has become a classic, and deservedly so. I know of no other piece of literature that so succinctly, persuasively, and effectively illustrates the meaning of both Adam Smith’s invisible hand – the possibility of cooperation without coercion – and Friedrich Hayek‘s emphasis on the importance of dispersed knowledge and the role of the price system in communicating information that “will make the individuals do the desirable things without anyone having to tell them what to do.”
For over half a century, this essay has stuck in the collective craw of Keynesians, who regard the free market as in need of government regulation and extensive government ownership of natural resources. But Keynesians tend to write turgid, incomprehensible articles. They do not have the gift of satire. One Keynesian has attempted to refute Read’s essay by an appeal to government ownership of forests and government regulation of industry. This is what made pencils possible, he says.
So, I have updated Read’s essay.
Self-Defense Against a Violent Flash Mob
Wyatt Earp disbursed many a lynch mob with his resolute demeanor standing behind his Colt .45 six shooters or a shotgun. Was his threat overkill? I don’t think so! It worked and usually, not a shot was fired. Check that thought. What about a “flash mob?”………………………………
George Pataki: This Administration Has Never Understood the Meaning of 9/11
The White House is now defending some of its talking points over how it will mark the tenth anniversary of September 11th, namely by minimizing references to Al Qaeda in an effort to show the terror group is increasingly less relevant. A former staffer of Vice President Dick Cheney spoke out against the move, saying “I think the fact that you would actually instruct government officials to speak differently about 9/11 simply based on where they’re standing is not just insulting to American audiences and to foreign audiences, but again I think its a little bit of a window into how they look at national security issues.

Steven Seagal Threatened With Lawsuit Over Police Raid Taped for Reality Show
Steven Seagal is being threatened with a lawsuit over his part in a police raid that was taped for his A&E reality show, TMZ reported.
The actor, who has served as a reserve deputy sheriff since the mid-’80s, was part of a team that arrived at Jesus Sanchez Llovera’s Arizona house in March with a tank and armed in full riot gear, Llovera alleges in his legal documents.
VIDEO: Steven Seagal Arrives for Police Bust in Tank
Llovera claims that the raid, carried out by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, was “unfounded” because they believed Llovera was raising roosters for illegal cockfighting. But he says the roosters are only “for show.”
Llovera — who served both Seagal and Sheriff Joe Arpaio with an official notice of claim, the first step toward a lawsuit — says his 11-month-old puppy was shot and killed during the raid and that police also killed more than 100 of his roosters.

New body ‘liquefaction’ unit unveiled in Florida funeral home
Excerpt only website: A Glasgow-based company has installed its first commercial “alkaline hydrolysis” unit at a Florida funeral home.
The unit by Resomation Ltd is billed as a green alternative to cremation and works by dissolving the body in heated alkaline water.
The facility has been installed at the Anderson-McQueen funeral home in St Petersburg, and will be used for the first time in the coming weeks. It is hoped other units will follow in the US, Canada and Europe.
The makers claim the process produces a third less greenhouse gas than cremation, uses a seventh of the energy, and allows for the complete separation of dental amalgam for safe disposal.

The Age of Helicopters
We live in an age of babies. It’s official. And I HATE it. Today, as I was fundraising for the YAF 9/11 Never Forget Project, I was pulled into the office of my head of school. I was told to take down the posters we had up, that read “Never Forget” with pictures of various attacks on Americans, such as 9/11, the bombing of the Marine barracks, and a picture of Daniel Pearl with a gun to his head. Now, my head of school said that the picture with the gun was inappropriate. Granted, I do go to a school with kids from Pre-K to 12th. Still, this is a perfect opportunity to educate all children on violence, and the violence committed against Americans. Censorship is part of the problem in this country. What we allow is violence in music, video-games, TV and movies. What we don’t allow, is showing real life violence and what its consequences are for innocents.
This is a problem that is plaguing this country, these “helicopter” parents. I know I was subject to it once, because I remember 9/11, but I never understood it until about 5th grade. Parents have become too protective, but in all the wrong ways. Parents have dulled the outside world, playgrounds, schools, extracurriculars etc, so much, that kids go inside. Those studies that say we’re addicted to the internet? We’re addicted to movies and TV? We’re violent because of video-games? Good job worried parent. That’s probably your fault. You censor useful things, like literature (Harry Potter etc.) and instead let your kids play Call Of Duty, to go blow a Russian’s head off.
This is the epidemic that contributes to America’s problem. You know how all us conservative complain on government dependency and such? Well, part of that is due to the fact kids aren’t allowed to grow up anymore. They can’t go break an arm on the playground, because the playground is plasticized and “safe.” They can’t learn about violence because God forbid we teach about violence in school, we’ll just let kids get desensitized at home without any moral or ethical basis for them to understand what they’re watching. The point is, again, kids don’t grow up anymore. Therefore, when they’re older, and their parents don’t want to support them anymore, they turn to Big Daddy, a.k.a., the government.
Yes, this may seem pointless, and rambling, and I am sorry. This is my first post in quite some time. I’ve been on a school retreat, fundraising for 9/11, at church and taking care of some personal matters. No worry, I should be back now.

Chuck Baldwin — Government Gunrunners:
…..Seriously folks, have you ever known of any federal agent being brought to justice for even the most egregious violations of life and liberty?
Where was the first federal agent brought to justice for the murders of over 80 mostly old men, women, and children outside Waco, Texas? Was agent Lon Horiuchi brought to justice for murdering Vicki Weaver? That monster shot Vicki in the face with a high-powered, scoped rifle as she stood in her kitchen holding her little baby. Not only was this creep not punished, he was later promoted and continues to work in law enforcement today.
(Horiuchi was charged with manslaughter in Idaho State court, but US District Judge Edward Lodge dismissed the case. In justifying his horrific ruling, Lodge said that the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution “grants immunity to federal officers acting in the scope of their employment.” Way to go judge! Heil Hitler!)
Oh! And by the way, Horiuchi was a federal sharpshooter at Waco, too……………………………………….

ALERT: Congressional Black Caucus ObamaThugs Call for Race War to keep Obama in power
“THE PUREST FORM OF TREASON”
by Sher Zieve, ©2011
Robert Mugabe became president of Zimbabwe by popular vote. He seized farms owned by whites and redistributed them to blacks in an effort to fight capitalism and colonialism, after which Zimbabwe’s economy suffered a serious downturn.
(Aug. 31, 2011) — Since usurping the US presidency, the Marxist-Leninist Obama syndicate has committed treason after treason upon the USA and its people. Note: See my past columns for more information. Now, however, it is moving into the next and, as predicted, extreme violence phase. The CBC is going from city to city nationally and demanding “Beyond Zimbabwe change!” As the TEA Party has attempted to rein in Congressional spending, the CBC has become more vicious in its rhetoric against it. Members of the radical Congressional Black Caucus are now spewing hatred against TEA Party members by comparing their efforts to stabilize the US economy to ‘enacting Jim Crow laws’ and ’seeing us [blacks] hanging on a tree’! This is not only unconscionable but, it is the equivalent of Islamists calling for and implementing the overthrow of the US government by force. Apparently the Marxist CBC, speaking for all of “black America,” has now declared war on the “white” TEA Party. By the way, Jim Crow laws and Ku Klux Clan lynchings were effected by Democrats. And, as Obama’s poll numbers continue to drop, his methods to retain power (a la Robert Mugabe?) become more and more malevolent.
We are already witnessing the coordinated “black flash mob” phenomena occurring in cities across the USA. These mobs are attacking white people, at will, and recently gained notoriety for unprovoked attacks on whites and their property at the Wisconsin State Fair. Obama’s US Attorney General Eric Holder’s election “civil rights” division has determined that white people no longer have the protection of US law. Only minorities (if they vote “left”) can now count on the misnamed “Department of Justice” to dole out anything resembling fair treatment. So, the Fourteenth Amendment’s “equal protection under the law” clause has now been eliminated for white folk whom Holder says ‘haven’t suffered enough’.
Is there anyone left in Congress who hasn’t been completely corrupted by bribes and power? Is there anyone left in that once-noble body who still cares about the survival of this country? Anyone? Has CBC member Rep. Allen West (R-FL) spoken out against this? If not…why not?
Folks, with this latest assault on We-the-People we have almost reached the end of the country. Either we stop these goons (calling for race riots is NOT free speech) or we die (literally) by their hands. As I have warned–and most of us already knew in our guts–we must fight or submit to the oppressors…and submission means both physical and spiritual death. The Obama syndicate–via its CBC mouthpieces–have now on-the-record declared war on the people of the United States of America. This consists of “high crimes” and is the purest form of treason. If you’re not willing to fight for Liberty, you doom yourself to die under Tyranny…………

Reid, Pelosi silent on ‘Jim Crow’ accusations
Democratic Congressional leadership remains silent about a Democratic congressman’s claim that Tea Party members of Congress would “like to see [black Americans] hanging on a tree.”
The top-ranking Democrats in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives – Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., – have not responded to The Washington Examiner‘s requests for comment on this issue. They have not supported or contradicted, or even acknowledged, the accusation leveled by Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind., that their Tea Party colleagues in Congress would like to see Carson murdered.
Repeated efforts to contact Minority Leader Pelosi about her caucus-member’s claim produced no response, except that The Examiner was told that her press secretary would respond “at his discretion.”
Carson accused his congressional colleagues of virulent racism at a Congressional Black Caucus town hall meeting:
“This is the effort that we’re seeing of Jim Crow. Some of these folks in congress right now would love to see us as second class citizens. Some of them in Congress right now of this Tea Party movement would love to see you and me hanging on a tree.”

Politico: Rep. Allen West considers quitting CBC (Black Caucus)
The lone Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus said Wednesday he’s thinking of quitting the group over fellow members’ comments trashing the tea party.
“I think that we heard the president talk about some of this over-the-top rhetoric and we should move away from that,” Florida Rep. Allen West said on “Fox & Friends.”
“When you start using words such as lynching, I was born and raised in Georgia and my folks were from southern Georgia, born in the ’20s and ’30s, that’s a very reprehensible word and we should move away from using that type of language. And I have to tell you, one of the things I’m starting to think about is reconsidering my membership in the Congressional Black Caucus because I don’t think that they’re moving towards the right manner in which we’re going to solve the problems not just in the black community but all across the United States of America.”
West’s comments come after Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) told a CBC gathering in Miami that “some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me … hanging on a tree.” Last week, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) told Los Angeles constituents that “as far as I’m concerned — the tea party can go straight to hell.”

The Jungle Has Now Become Mainstream!
One statistic that has absolutely floored me was that America dominates the world today in Internet pornography use. As our once moral society is burning frantically out of control today with the unbridled passions of godless men, what are we as a nation to do? Once America is removed off the world stage what restraining influence will there be in this oppressive world?

Today, in every facet of our American culture and society there is nothing found that is NOT untainted or unsoiled……………………
Could Bill O’Reilly Drag Fox News Into the Hacking Probe?
Rupert Murdoch is working hard to contain the fallout from the hacking scandal that has engulfed his U.K. newspapers. His nightmare scenario right now would be the coming to light of anything to suggest that the bad behavior that was so (allegedly) commonplace at the News of the World also happened with any frequency in the U.S. That means not just interception of voicemails but also use of shady private investigators and improper relationships with, or payments to, law enforcement officials.
How unfortunate for Bill O’Reilly, then, that new accusations against him involve exactly those things. According to Gawker, the top-rated Fox News host is the prime mover behind a highly irregular police investigation in his Long Island hometown. A detective working for internal affairs was allegedly asked to meet with private investigators who were trying to build a case against another detective, who had become romantically involved with O’Reilly’s wife while the two were separated. This, by the way, is the promised bombshell that prompted Fox News’s bizarre and dishonest reports about how Gawker is “dying.”
Assuming Gawker’s sources are correct, it’s unclear exactly what, if anything, O’Reilly himself did here. The former police commissioner who allegedly ordered the investigation denies that O’Reilly requested it. O’Reilly was reportedly dangling a large potential donation to the police department’s charitable fund at the time, but there’s no evidence that he ever made one. At this point, all that can be deduced for sure is that it looks bad. (Fox News and News Corp. haven’t replied to my requests for comment, nor did they respond to Gawker’s.)

Clarence Thomas: Liberal nightmare on Obamacare:
In the glossy pages of the New Yorker, in graceful prose and with good reporting, the dreams and nightmares of the admirers of President Obama and his policies lay exposed.
The dreams include Ryan Lizza‘s report last April in which he quoted an Obama adviser saying the president’s policy on Libya was “leading from behind.” This week, as Tripoli seemed about to fall, the magazine’s editor David Remnick hailed Obama’s “calculated modesty.”
The nightmare appeared in last week’s issue, in Jeffrey Toobin‘s lengthy article on Supreme Court jurisprudence, titled “Partners” and subtitled “Will Clarence and Virginia Thomas succeed in killing Obama’s health-care plan?”………………………….

Obama Siding With U.N. Against Reforms Proposed in U.S. House
Even as the Obama administration admonishes the United Nations for an “unwarranted” pay hike for staffers, it is going to bat for the United Nations against proposed legislation proposed in Congress that would revolutionize the way America finances international institutions and give Washington better leverage over them.
Proponents of the legislation, offered today by the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican of Florida, say that no matter how hard the administration fights against it, the current political climate presents an opportunity to rethink how American taxpayers finance Turtle Bay.
“This is the only way to create real reform, especially given U.S. budgetary stringency,” the former ambassador to the U.N., John Bolton, told the Sun. “This is the time to act,” he added. “The State Department may lobby hard” against Ms. Ros-Lehtinen’s proposal, “but the times they are a changin’.”
Mr. Bolton has long advocated reforming the way America pays its dues to the world body. He has called for Washington to finance only those U.N. units and programs it deems to advance America’s interests, rather than pay according to an assessment made by the General Assembly. His initiative is widely considered the basis for Ms. Ros-Lehtinen’s bill.
State Department officials say that voluntary-based U.N. dues would cut the amount of American contribution to the U.N. by half and undercut its world leadership….

Watching A Green Fiction Unravel
Science: Experiments performed by a European nuclear research group indicate that the sun, not man, determines Earth’s temperature. Somewhere, Al Gore just shuddered as an unseasonably cool breeze blows by.
The results from an experiment to mimic Earth’s atmosphere by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, tell researchers that the sun has a significant effect on our planet’s temperature. Its magnetic field acts as a gateway for cosmic rays, which play a large role in cloud formation.
Consequently, when the sun’s magnetic field allows cosmic rays to seed cloud cover, temperatures are cooler. When it restricts cloud formation by deflecting cosmic rays away from Earth, temperatures go up.
Or, as the London Telegraph‘s James Delingpole delicately put it:
“It’s the sun, stupid.”
This new finding of 63 scientists from 17 European and U.S. institutes from an experiment that’s been ongoing since 2009 is, if we may paraphrase Vice President Joe Biden, a big deal. Which is exactly why the mainstream media, with so much invested in global warming hysteria, is letting last week’s announcement from CERN pass like a brief summer shower, ignoring it.
Even CERN’s own director general, Rolf-Dieter Heuer, is trying to avoid the meaning of the findings.
He told Germany’s Die Welt Online that he’s “asked the colleagues to present the results clearly, but not to interpret them. That would go immediately into the highly political arena of the climate change debate.”

“THE TICKET TO INSURE FREEDOM”
by One Pissed-off Vietnam Vet
Pol Pot was dictator of Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, during which 21% of the population died as a result of executions and malnutrition
(Aug. 30, 2011) — There was a time not too long ago when kings ruled the land. Some kings were good to their subjects, which was rare, but as long as the subjects were satisfied or didn’t know any other way, the king had nothing to fear, although most, if not all, had a food taster.
Then, I think, a time came when crowns went out of fashion, and who ever heard of a crownless king? So the crownless kings started to call themselves rulers. But after a while, the word “ruler” lost its edge. Go ahead: say “ruler” out loud. Nice word, as far as your mouth and tongue go; really smooth, which is why the rulers needed a new word, a harsher-sounding word. So they came up with “dictator.” Now there’s a word to please even the most ardent ruler. “King” had a few harsh sounds, but “dictator” has even more.
But in order to qualify for the moniker “dictator,” they had to exhibit certain traits. For example, they had to be egomaniacs to the nth degree. Anyone questioning their thought process was likely to be erased, and dictators were always imagining complicated plots against them. Well, maybe they weren’t imagining and maybe the plots weren’t all that complicated, which is why there never has been a “benevolent dictator.” Today, when we refer to a person in power as being a dictator, we mean he’s not all there, he’s not put together quite right, he thinks he knows better, he suffers delusions, is paranoid, and, last but certainly not least, the dictator goes so far as to fantasize that the people actually like him.
Whether you call the person calling the shots a king, ruler, or dictator, there comes a time when the subjects, people, and lesser beings get sick and tired of being abused, so they are forced to start a revolution. Most revolts are short-lived because the dictator is so incompetent that even his closest advisers can readily support his removal. And then there are revolts that can last years, and those are caused by the police and the military fighting for the dictator and against the people, which is the most wasteful because there can be but one outcome: the people always win, and by the time they do win, they are so upset they are very likely to hang the dictator from a lamp post, as the Italians did to Mussolini.
Once the king is removed, some form of government must take its place: enter the United States Constitution, a document designed to ensure the rights of the individual, to ensure that America will no longer be ruled by a king, to ensure the peace and tranquility without a dictator. The Constitution ensures liberty over tyrants, freedom over abuse, and justice over lawlessness. The Constitution is the ticket that all patriotic Americans have to insure their freedom. Without that ticket, we subject ourselves to a dictator who circumvents the Congress, and thereby the people, as, for example, by the implementation of the “Dream Act.” It is impossible to support Obama remaining in office and support the United States Constitution at the same time. You either have a dictator OR you have freedom; it’s that simple……………………
