Editorial: Is A Weaker U.S. Part Of Debt Deal?

National Security: With his boss on vacation, Vice President Joe Biden has a very important job to do. He’s in China, begging communist officials to please keep buying our bonds. If they do, what’s he giving them in return?

Sending Biden to China, pardon the phrase, raises red flags about what we might commit to while he’s there. What is Biden, the gaffemeister in chief, authorized to give the Chinese?

Officially, the White House says Biden’s in China to sell its leaders on the U.S. debt-ceiling deal that will trim $2.5 trillion from the expected deficits of $10 trillion over the next decade.

But with S&P downgrading us from AAA to AA+ just a week ago, Biden wouldn’t seem to have much standing to argue that it’s a good deal. Fiscally, we’ve never been in worse shape. So how can Biden persuade the Chinese — who already hold $2 trillion or so in dollar-based assets — that more debt is a good deal for them?

Will he tell China’s apparatchiks that a half-trillion, maybe more, of the cuts in the debt deal come out of defense? Or that the cuts were so severe that even new Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has warned of going too far — and possibly hollowing out the military? If so, China may agree it’s a good deal.

The administration has signaled as much. On the eve of Biden’s trip, the White House suddenly announced it wouldn’t sell F-16 jets to Taiwan — a huge strategic favor to the Chinese. Was there a quid pro quo?

Two new videos recently released by the Department of Homeland Security add to the mountain of evidence that proves Big Sis has now dispensed with all pretense of the war on terror being focused on Al-Qaeda Muslims, as tools that were designed to catch foreign terrorists are now being targeted against Americans who are opposed to big government.

The two recent PSAs (watch them below), part of Homeland Security’s “See Something Say Something snitch campaign, portray white middle class Americans as terrorists in almost all of the scenarios shown in the clips.

Far from representing some superficial nod to political correctness, this is in fact a deliberate effort by the feds to characterize predominantly white, middle class, politically engaged Americans as domestic extremists. It’s all part of the agenda to frame dissent against big government as dangerous radicalism……………………..

Costo Pulls The Plug On Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Back in the 1990s, when it seemed like electric vehicles were gaining traction with consumers, Costco did something unusual: the big-box retailer installed charging stations at many of its California locations. Now, however, those stations are being removed, and electric car fans aren’t happy.

According to Plug In America, Costco has offered no official explanation for removing the charging stations other than the Xeroxed signs taped to each that read, “Please be advised that this electric charger will be removed on August 15th, 2011. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Costco’s move seems curious for a couple of reasons. For starters, the California Energy Commission has launched a special grant program to fund the upgrade of older, AVCON charging stations to newer J1772 models that can accommodate modern electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. Costco would seem to be tailor-made for that initiative, so why not apply?

But apart from the fact that upgrading should be of minimal cost to Costco is the fact that sales of electric cars and plug-in hybrids are booming these days. At a time when other companies (even McDonald’s!) are rolling out the red carpet for electric vehicle owners, why would Costco yank the rug out from under them?

The Obama Administration today announced a virtual amnesty-by-decree for hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens, whose deportations will be “indefinitely delayed”. In addition, Obama finally announced a jobs program – but for ILLEGAL ALIENS, not citizens – as those 300,000 illegals will also become eligible for “work permits“.

This action represents an administrative end-run around Congress, which twice rejected the ‘DREAM Act’ in 2010. As disgraceful as is this usurpation of Congressional authority, this announcement is even worse than is being reported.

A Ron Paul supporter in Texas has taken out a full-page ad in a local alternative weekly newspaper seeking women who have slept with the presidential candidate.

“Have you ever had sex with Rick Perry?” asks the ad, which runs in this week’s Austin Chronicle. The ad was placed by Robert Morrow, who describes himself as a “self-employed investor and political activist” and a three-time delegate to the Texas state Republican convention.

We are an overextended empire and commonwealth facing strategic and fiscal bankruptcy. If Obama is to lead the nation out of the crisis it confronts, he has to preside over a downsizing of the welfare-warfare state – the same state that sustains his base.

Not to worry, we are told. When the lazy days of summer are over, Obama will present Congress with his big plan for resurrecting the economy and ensuring the long-term solvency of the nation.

Obama’s September program – indeed, any credible plan to revive the economy and bring our books into balance – has to include a rollback of U.S. commitments at home and abroad.

Yet, domestically, this cannot be done without reducing future Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits, and cutting and capping the social programs of the Great Society. Moreover, half the nation cannot freeload forever, as is the case today, contributing nary a dime in federal income taxes.

And such reforms must adversely impact most Obama’s political and personal base.

If he proposes new taxes, tea-party Republicans fix bayonets.

If he proposes downsizing the government and cutting and capping social programs, his most loyal constituents rise up against him.

When’s the Pump Gonna Plunge??

OK, with oil now trading at just a bit over $81.00 a barrel after today, when is the bottom going to fall out of these gas prices? In New Hampshire today, I just paid $3.65/gallon today.

According to NYMEX.com, the price of RBOB is $2.78/gallon. It seems to me that gas should be somewhere around $3.35/gallon, unless I am missing something.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Air Force discharging sergeant who doubts Obama – Boston.com

OMAHA, Neb.—The Air Force said Wednesday it is discharging a hero of the so-called birther movement who refused to report to duty in Germany for a few days earlier this month because he doubts President Barack Obama’s citizenship.

Staff Sgt. Daryn Moran expects to be discharged within the next week. Although the 41-year-old Nebraska man refused to report to duty and had called for Obama’s arrest in statements on websites, several other things contributed to his discharge, including his opposition to Obama’s decision to allow gays to serve openly in the military.

Moran, who has served nine years in the Air Force, drew the attention of the birther movement when he shared his views on Obama’s citizenship on websites of groups that believe Obama was not born in the U.S. and therefore is not eligible to serve as president or commander in chief.

Obama released a copy of his detailed birth certificate from Hawaii in April in an attempt to quell the questions about whether he was born outside the U.S. But many birthers contend Obama’s birth certificate must be a fake.

Moran was an ophthalmology technician with the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, where he had been stationed since October 2010. He was put on leave sometime earlier this year after some of his co-workers at the eye clinic were bothered by comments he made about the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” and about Muslim terrorists and how he thought Obama was connected to Muslims. One of the doctors at the clinic was Muslim.

It’s not clear whether Moran would have been prosecuted for refusing to report for duty because it appears his discharge was approved by his commander about a week beforehand.

Air Force spokesman Michael Kucharek said Wednesday that his commander approved the discharge on Aug. 4. Moran had refused to report for duty starting last Thursday.

Moran said he is receiving an honorable discharge, but the Air Force would only confirm that he is being discharged.

Moran said he didn’t consider his orders valid because he doesn’t consider Obama’s presidency valid. Even as he was waiting for the Air Force to decide what to do with him, Moran was calling for Obama’s arrest………….

Yesterday, the Washington Post asked me to comment on conservative concerns about Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry’s records.

Here is what I told them in full:

“The Gardasil debacle is just one of many concerns a wide range of grass-roots conservative activists have about Perry’s record as governor. He’s soft on illegal immigration despite a few recent nods to border enforcement. He’s prone to crony capitalism. And as the vaccine mandate scandal shows, he demonstrated Nanny State tendencies that are anathema to Tea Party core principles.

A clearer, more forthright apology about the Gardasil executive order would have helped. But in the end, I don’t think there’s anything he can do to ‘fix’ his political/ideological instincts. They are what they are.

The reaction to my criticism of Perry’s Gardasil mandate is mixed. Yeah, I’ve gotten heat for not falling in line with the latest GOP bandwagon. Many Perry backers will accuse detractors of being single-issue purists making mountains out of molehills. Some Texan readers will defend him to the death out of parochial loyalty. The majority of responses have been positive, though. If we demand that Obama answer for the glaring discrepancies between his rhetoric and his record, we must do the same for our candidates.

Is This A Second Great Depression – Or Could It Become Something Worse?

With the US and European economies having slowed markedly according to the latest data, and with global growth continuing to disappoint, a reasonable question increasingly arises: Are we in another Great Depression?

The easy answer is “no” – the main features of the Great Depression have not yet manifest themselves and still seem unlikely. But it is increasingly likely that we will find ourselves in the midst of something nearly as traumatic, a long slump of the kind seen with some regularity in the nineteenth century, particularly if presidential election-year politics continue to head in dangerous direction.

The Great Depression had three main characteristics, seen in the United States and most other countries that were severely affected. None of these have been part of our collective experience since 2007.

First, output dropped sharply after 1929, by over 25 percent in real terms in the US (using the Bureau of Economic Analysis data, from its website, for real GDP, using chained 1937 dollars). In contrast, in the U.S. we had a relatively small decline in GDP after the boom peaked. According to the BEA’s latest online data, GDP peaked in the 2nd quarter of 2008 at 14.4155 trillion and bottomed out in the 2nd quarter of 2009 at 13.8541 trillion; a decline of about 4 percent.

Second, unemployment rose above 20 percent in the US during the 1930s and stayed there. We experienced record job losses for the post-war US, with around 8 million jobs lost. But unemployment only briefly touched 10 percent (in the 4th quarter of 2009; see the Bureau of Labor Statistics website). Even if we include the highest estimates – which include people discouraged from looking for a job, thus not registered as unemployed – the jobless rate reached around 16-17 percent. It’s a jobs disaster, to be sure, but not the same scale as the Great Depression.

Democratic regimes also base their legitimacy on their ability to claim that their rule is “the will of the people.” They believe in democracy with all their will, they tell us, so much so that generations of American politicians have believed that it was legitimate to wage war on other nations and to kill thousands of their citizens to impose “democracy” on them. Lincoln’s armies killed some 300,000 fellow citizens and maimed for life an even greater number, supposedly so that “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” i.e., democracy, shall not perish from the earth.

This of course was pure B.S.: Had the South seceded peacefully, democracy would have still existed in the U.S., the Confederate States of America, Canada, England, France, etc., etc. Nevertheless, that was an official purpose of the war, and of numerous other American wars. Woodrow Wilson brought America into World War I to supposedly “make the world safe for democracy.” We are now supposedly bringing democracy to Iraq at bayonet point with numerous other Middle East countries in our sights.

But America was not founded as a democracy. It was a constitutional republic. The whole purpose of the Constitution, James Madison wrote in Federalist #10, was to control “the violence of faction,” by which he meant democracy. That’s why, until the Lincolnian “Civil War Amendments” were added to it, every part of the Constitution was a prohibition of some kind of governmental power or activity. Democracy was made into a “civil religion” by Lincoln and subsequent generations of Lincolnites who have successfully overthrown the constitutional republic of the founding fathers……………….

In response to a Freedom of Information Act Lawsuit, the Department of Homeland security, headed by ‘Big Sis’ Janet Napolitano, has released just a handful of pages of documents pertaining to the use of mobile naked body scanners, half of which are completely redacted.

The documents were obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) as part of it’s lawsuit to uncover details of a secretive program to install radiation firing naked body scanners in all manner of public places, beyond the nation’s airports, in surface transit and even street-roving vans.

The DHS wrote EPIC on August 8, stating “After further reviews we have determined that some documents that were originally withheld in full will be partially released to you.”

The new documents reveal nothing new at all, however, with entire pages having been blacked out by the agency.

The DHS invokes several FOIA exemption clauses, ironically including one that cites “invasion of personal privacy”.

“The privacy interests of the individuals in the records you have requested outweigh any minimal public interest in disclosure of the information.” the DHS writes.

Presidential candidate Ron Paul, who has long called for abolishing the Federal Reserve, said he now looks “like a moderate” compared with GOP rival and fellow Texan, Gov. Rick Perry, who said it would be “almost treacherous, or treasonous,” if the central bank increased the money supply before the 2012 election.

Referring to Mr. Perry, the Texas congressman told supporters at a campaign event in Concord, N.H., Wednesday that “He realizes that talking about the Fed is good, too. But I tell you what: He makes me look like a moderate.”

Obama’s New ‘Terrorists’: Well-Dressed White Women (New Big Sis PSA Ad)

Fresh off their portrayal of white, middle class Americans as the most likely terrorists, Barack Obama’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has outdone itself in a ridiculous ad to run on TV this month.

The PSA, shows a well-dressed attractive white woman exiting a taxi before walking into a train station. The taxi driver – a white man (what else?) – then makes a phone call and sets a timer on a device in the trunk of the car. The woman then leaves her designer handbag in the station, presumably with a bomb inside (I assume she removed her Chanel makeup first).

A passenger inside the train station is clearly shocked – SHOCKED – by a dressed-to-the-nines white woman leaving her leather Fendi bag on a bench and freaks out. Wouldn’t you, given how many thousands of Americans have been butchered by well-dressed white women?

DHS: It’s better to be politically-correct (and dead), then tell the truth and have Muslims be offended.

VIDEO: SEIU Mob Attacks Shopping Mall Security Guards in San Francisco

Once again, union members are up to their tiresome intimidation tactics.

In San Francisco, CA, a group of striking janitorial workers carrying SEIU signs at the Westfield Mall was caught on video taunting and scraping with security guards trying to open up the entrance.

This video adds to a string of surfacing union acts within the past couple of days. Recently, an Ohio business man was shot for being ‘non-union‘ and a Communication Workers of America (CWA) representative called for “open season” on “managers and scabs” of Verizon.

Philadelphia – A new video has surfaced showing a group of teen girls attacking a worker outside City Hall in Philadelphia, myfoxphilly.com reports.

The video, shot in May, shows a woman being attacked in broad daylight. The video shows the woman walking outside City Hall when a pack of teenage girls appears from behind her and slams her into the ground, hitting her repeatedly.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Daryn Moran is getting his wings clipped, presumably for insisting that President Obama wasn’t born in the U.S.

The U.S. Air Force in Europe said Moran “is currently outprocessing for discharge from the Air Force, which was previously approved by his commander on August 4th.” There was no statement explaining the reason for the discharge.

The final straw apparently came when Moran, a hero of the so-called “birther” movement, refused to report to duty in Germany where he was previously deployed.

Over the past week, Moran has taken to online forums and his Twitter account to denounce the commander in chief as “a criminal” and “the enemy” while claiming that Obama was not born in Hawaii, as his birth certificate has shown.

Moran has also been outspoken about his opposition to the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which will allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

More guns in bars, less crime

More guns less crime? John R. Lott‘s pithy summary describing the advantages of owning guns seems to be borne out in Virginia according to a report by Mark Bowes of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Last year the Virginia legislature passed a law allowing those with gun permits to carry concealed weapons into bars and restaurants serving alcohol. Opponents predicted Wild West shootings and bloody mayhem from drunken patrons; instead

The number of major crimes involving firearms at bars and restaurants statewide declined 5.2 percent from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011, compared with the fiscal year before the law went into effect, according to crime data compiled by Virginia State Police at the newspaper’s request. (snip)

“The numbers basically just confirm what we’ve said would happen if the General Assembly changed the law,” said Philip Van Cleave, president of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League, which strongly lobbied for the law’s change that made Virginia one of 43 states to allow concealed guns in restaurants that serve alcohol. “It’s sort of a big yawn. So from my point of view, none of this is surprising.”

Granted, Virginia has enjoyed an over all drop in crime and these figures may just reflect that.

“Keep in mind,” Van Cleave added, “what the other side was saying — that this was going to be a blood bath, that restaurants will be dangerous and people will stop going. But there was nothing to base the fear-mongering on.”

David Rittgers, an attorney and decorated former Army special forces officer who is now a legal policy analyst at the libertarian Cato Institute, said the growing number of states that are adopting concealed-carry measures like Virginia’s have seen no appreciable rise — and in some cases a decline — in violent crime.

‘Authorized Journalists’ show hostility of press toward ‘conservative’ views

Regular readers know I use the term “Authorized Journalists” to describe the establishment press, the folks who won’t cover Gunwalker but fall all over each other trying to get more gun laws passed as a result of it. This comes in from The Washington Times: At a Chicago press conference held by Sen. Dick Durbin of IL, himself one of the biggest enemies of the Second Amendment in government, conservative journalist William Kelly tried to ask him a question:

“Senator, you’ve blamed the tea party…but do you bear any responsibility for this downgrade crisis?”

The press went wild—the “Authorized Journalists,” that is, dismissing Kelly as a Tea Party organizer, telling him he wasn’t a reporter and couldn’t ask questions—the same thing happened to me at a Brady Campaign event at a public park in California, except my antagonist was an “Only One”—and the bottom line is they harassed Kelly for credentials—not anyone else, just him, and a law enforcement rep escorted him out.

The regressive left habitually and falsely accuses Second Amendment activists of not caring about the rest of the Bill of Rights, but this shows that’s just projection and deflection masking their own hostility to all freedom—remember John Kerry saying the press didn’t need to give Tea Partiers equal time because their opinions weren’t valid?

When the history of our time is written—as it always is, by the victors—let’s work toward making sure their shameful abdication of all semblance of ethics is what people remember about these wretched subversives, these Fourth Estate Fifth Columnists.

That means we need to be the ones who win.

Garofalo: Herman Cain “Being Paid To Run,” Has Stockholm Syndrome”

Liberal activist and actress Janeane Garofalo appeared on Keith Olbermann‘s “Countdown” show on the Current TV network Wednesday night. Garofalo went on several rants, one of which included accusing the Tea Party, which she calls a “fundamentalist” movement, of racism.

Garofalo also said successful businessman Herman Cain is either being paid to run or is suffering from Stockholm syndrome because he is a “person of color” running as a Republican in the party’s presidential primary.

“[He's] in this presidential race because he deflects the racism that is inherit in the Republican party, the conservative movement, the Tea Party certainly. [In] the last 30 years the Republican party has been moving more and more to the right, but also race-baiting more. Gay-baiting more. Religion-baiting more,” Garofalo said.

“But, Herman Cain, I feel like, is being paid by somebody to be involved and to run for president so that you go like ‘I love that, that can’t be racist. He’s a black guy, a black guy asking for Obama being impeached.’ Or ‘it’s a black guy whose anti-Muslim. It’s a black guy who is a Tea Party guy.’”

Garofalo also had some conspiracy theories as to who may be putting Cain up to this.

“And I feel like wouldn’t that suit the purposes of whomever astroturfs these things. Whether that be the Koch brothers or Grover Norquist or any anything. It could even be Karl Rove. ‘Let’s get Herman Cain involved so it deflects the obvious racism of our Republican party,’” Garofalo said.

Listening tours have become an obligatory stage of the early campaign, but their name is another degradation of meaning. Politicians don’t conduct listening tours in order to listen to voters, but to have those voters listen to them. The occasional town hall meeting with its exchanges is the verbal version of a Letters to the Editor column. But does anyone pretend that a newspaper exists to listen to the readers?…………………………….
