“Of all the people I interviewed in New Orleans regarding the Kennedy assassination, Carlos Bringuier was the one I trusted most. I could see in his eyes he was always telling me the complete truth.” (Oriana Fallaci, L, Europeo, 1969.)

“That weasel walked into my store and started looking around,” recalls Carlos Bringuier about the afternoon of August 5, 1963. “But I could sense he wasn’t a shopper. Sure enough, after a few minutes of browsing he came up and extended his hand. “Good afternoon,” he said. “I’m Lee Harvey Oswald.”

The telegenic Texan took two steps forward sitting in the “center chair” on Fox Monday evening. One step backward too alas, but more about that in a bit.

Gov Perry was relaxed and alert as he fielded a variety of questions. He smartly used his answers to remind conservatives why they should consider him.

This is a man who is a quick study and a formidable politician. Instead of just Texas this and Texas that he pointed out that the Lone Star state all by its lonesome is the 13th largest economy in the world. A nice way to pivot into what will be the big issue in 2012 without sounding provincial.

Zero-based foreign aid will not only warm conservative innards, it will play well as part of the spending argument. And he noted the UN can expect a zero-budget starting point. Long overdue and just hearing it made me smile. Asked about Pakistan’s aid Perry demonstrated…gasp..nuance. He noted Pakistan is a difficult problem not the least because it has nukes. Nice answer.

And most true, red-blooded Americans know of only one thing that can make this special American holiday time of year even more special: a much larger TV.

Since our friendly federal government has thoughtfully changed us all over to digital television, it means that our TVs can be larger, more life-like, more brilliant and far more likely to interfere with our ability to understand the English language as spoken by our spouses.

This year, in my house, this is important.

Over the past several months, the NAACP has launched a campaign against the Confederate Battle Flag by protesting its presence at the South Carolina statehouse. Governor Nikki Haley did not respond to the demands of the NAACP to remove it. In a similar matter, black protesters have called for the removal of the Battle Flag from a Georgian cemetery that happens to have interred the bones of Confederate soldiers. And now, most recently, Republican presidential candidate Governor Rick Perry of Texas has become the newest target of the NAACP over whether the Battle Flag should appear on license plates. In the end, Perry decided against the idea.

Hillary Clinton Fans Pat Caddell And Doug Schoen Are Living In A Fantasy World

Mediaite ^ | November 23, 2011 | Tommy Christopher

In a recent op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Fox News contributors Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen urged President Obama to “abandon his candidacy for re-election” in favor of “the one candidate who would become, by acclamation, the nominee of the Democratic Party: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.”

Their premise is that Sec. Clinton not only has a better chance to win, but “is the only leader capable of uniting the country around a bipartisan economic and foreign policy.”

Now, most liberals will take one look at that byline and say “Who cares what a couple of ‘Fox News Democrats’ have to say?”

That’s an excellent point, not because Schoen and Caddell are Fox News contributors, but because their idea is so laughably unserious, it really doesn’t merit any pushback. Aside from conservatives who already hate President Obama, there’s really only one audience for this: the remnants of disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters who still haven’t gotten over the bitter 2008 Democratic primary. It is out of affection for them that I even bother writing about this.

Let’s set aside the “merits” of Caddell and Schoen’s premise that the President could govern more effectively as a lame duck, or that President Obama has been the “overtly partisan” cause of ”two years of political gridlock at a time when we can ill afford it.”

Concede, even, that Hillary Clinton could win a Democratic primary. She was an excellent candidate in 2008, but she ran a disastrous campaign, overseen by Schoen partner Mark Penn. This time would hopefully be better. Schoen and Caddell labor under a fantasy that has overtaken many a Clintonista, and has been fueled by lots of conservative pro-Hillary talk since 2008:

Watts Up With That?

November 24, 2011

I just got a nauseating email release from The Daily Climate that said:

DailyClimate.org is pleased to offer two opinion pieces by notable climate scientists commenting on the recent release of the climate science emails.

Get a load of this headline:

Opinion: Snippets of stolen emails cannot make the Earth flat

Wow, make the earth flat? That has to be some sort award winning headline for the most stupid strawman argument ever. But then, look who is writing it –Supermandia

The first paragraph sets the nauseating tone:

Here is what we know: The Earth is round, smoking is linked to lung cancer, and humans are changing the climate by emitting massive amounts of heat-trapping carbon dioxide and other gases. Like extra blankets at night, those emissions are warming the planet. The physics of greenhouse gases has been understood for more than 100 years. It is not new science.

[Update: Hmmm, commenter John-X points out this reference from Mike Mann's PSU meteorology dept (shown below) which really throws a wet blanket on that statement.]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Supermandia and the most supersilly Climategate rebuttal ever bumpO Does the atmosphere (or any greenhouse gas) act a blanket?
At best, the reference to a blanket is a bad metaphor. Blankets act primarily to suppress convection; the atmosphere acts to enable convection. To claim that the atmosphere acts a blanket, is to admit that you don’t know how either one of them operates.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Of course, the rest of this is just a BS strawman argument, most skeptics (and certainly no skeptical scientists) don’t dispute the greenhouse effect, only the magnitude of the effect and confounding factors such as feedbacks and sensitivity.

What if the Constitution No Longer Applied?

Townhall.com ^ | November 24, 2011 | Judge Andrew Napolitano

What if the whole purpose of the Constitution was to limit the government? What if Congress’ enumerated powers in the Constitution no longer limited Congress, but were actually used as justification to extend Congress’ authority over every realm of human life? What if the president, meant to be an equal to Congress, has become a democratically elected, term-limited monarch? What if the president assumed everything he did was legal, just because he’s the president?

What if he could interrupt your regularly scheduled radio and TV programming for a special message from him? What if he could declare war on his own? What if he could read your emails and texts without a search warrant? What if he could kill you without warning?

What if the rights and principles guaranteed in the Constitution have been so distorted in the past 200 years as to be unrecognizable by the Founders? What if the states were mere provinces of a totally nationalized and fully centralized government? What if the Constitution was amended stealthily, not by constitutional amendments duly passed by the states, but by the constant and persistent expansion of the federal government‘s role in our lives? What if the federal government decided whether its own powers were proper and constitutional?

When will Obama crack in public?

by Mychal Massie

At a time when many Americans can barely afford Burger King and a movie, Obama boasts of spending a billion dollars on his re-election campaign.

Questioned at a recent appearance about the spiraling fuel costs, Obama said, “Get used to it” – and with an insouciant grin and chortle, he told another person at the event, who complained about the effect high fuel prices were having on his family, to “get a more fuel-efficient car.”

A friend of mine recently forwarded me a question a friend of his had posed: “If/when our Federal Government comes to pilfer, pillage, plunder our property and destroy our lives, what good can a handgun do against an army with advanced weaponry, tanks, missiles, planes, or whatever else they might have at their disposal to achieve their nefarious goals? (I’m not being facetious: I accept the possibility that what happened in Germany, or similar, could happen here; I’m just not sure that the potential good from an armed citizenry in such a situation outweighs the day-to-day problems caused by masses of idiots who own guns.)” If I may, I’d like to try to answer that question. I certainly do not think the writer facetious for asking it. The subject is a serious one that I have given much research and considerable thought to. I believe that upon the answer to this question depends the future of our Constitutional republic, our liberty and perhaps our lives. My friend Aaron Zelman, one of the founders of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, once told me:

“If every Jewish and anti-nazi family in Germany had owned a Mauser rifle and twenty rounds of ammunition AND THE WILL TO USE IT (emphasis supplied, MV), Adolf Hitler would be a little-known footnote to the history of the Weimar Republic.”

The Battle of Athens

2 AUGUST 1946

I. Introduction

On 2 August 1946, some Americans, brutalized by their county government, used armed force to overturn it. These Americans wanted honest, open elections. For years they had asked for state or Federal election monitors to prevent vote fraud — forged ballots, secret ballot counts, and intimidation by armed sheriff‘s deputies — by the local political boss. They got no help.

These Americans’ absolute refusal to knuckle-under had been hardened by service in World War II. Having fought to free other countries from murderous regimes, they rejected vicious abuse by their county government. These Americans had a choice. Their state’s Constitution – Article 1, Section 26 – recorded their right to keep and bear arms for the common defense. Few “gun control” laws had been enacted.

II. The Setting

These Americans were Tennesseeans of McMinn County, located between Chattanooga and Knoxville, in Eastern Tennessee. The two main towns were Athens and Etowah.

For example, can you name the country that is the number one oil producer in the world, the number one oil exporter in the world, the number one exporter of natural gas in the world and that also has the second most powerful military in the entire world? In case you need a hint, it is not Saudi Arabia, it is not China and it is not the United States. The correct answer is Russia. The Russian Bear is back in a big way. NEW HAMPSHIRE DEMOCRAT OFFICIALS HIDE FROM THOSE SEEKING THE TRUTH…AND FROM THE REAL ISSUE

New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election Declaration of Candidacy signed by Obama swearing “under penalties of perjury” that he is “qualified” to be a candidate for President of the United States

(Nov. 23, 2011) — New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney has reportedly asked the State police to investigate the “aggressive” behavior of several legislators following the November 18, 2011 decision of the New Hampshire Ballot Law Commission to maintain Barack Hussein Obama’s name on the state ballot.

Obama has sworn on his Declaration of Candidacy for the 2012 presidential election that he is “qualified to be a candidate for president of the United States pursuant to article II, section 1, clause 4 of the United States Constitution…” despite evidence that he was born in a foreign country or otherwise does not meet the definition of “natural born Citizen.” Many analysts have concluded that the documentation Obama has presented is fraudulent.

It is possible that Obama is a “natural born Citizen” but ran for all public offices he has held under an alias.

While Obama and his supporters have claimed that he was born in Hawaii, many constitutional scholars and attorneys have opined that being born on U.S. soil is not enough or even necessarily that which is required for a person to be considered “natural born.”

Customer service representatives from Butterball, one of America’s most popular Turkey brands, confirmed to WND that the company’s whole turkeys are – without being labeled as such – slaughtered according to Islamic “halal” standards.

Halal slaughter involves cutting the trachea, the esophagus and the jugular vein and letting the blood drain out while saying, ‘Bismillah allahu akbar’ – ‘in the name of Allah the greatest,’” explains Pamela Geller, author of “Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance.” “Many people refuse to eat it on religious grounds. Many Christians, Hindus or Sikhs and Jews find it offensive to eat meat slaughtered according to Islamic ritual.”

She continues on her blog, Atlas Shrugs, “I don’t want to eat halal. Not a bite – and yet this is being shoved down the throats of Americans without their knowledge.”

Multiple phone representatives at Butterball confirmed the turkeys are slaughtered according to halal standards, and one named Tracy (she declined to give her last name) further confirmed the words of Islamic dedication are spoken over the birds. None, however, could explain exactly how the slaughters are performed.

Yesterday we reported that the Arab League (with European and US support) are preparing to institute a no fly zone over Syria. Today, we get an escalation which confirms we may be on the edge. Just out from CBS: “The U.S. Embassy in Damascus urged its citizens in Syria to depart “immediately,” and Turkey‘s foreign ministry urged Turkish pilgrims to opt for flights to return home from Saudi Arabia to avoid traveling through Syria.” But probably the most damning evidence that the “western world” is about to do the unthinkable and invade Syria, and in the process force Iran to retaliate, is the weekly naval update from Stratfor, which always has some very interesting if always controversial view on geopolitics, where we find that for the first time in many months, CVN 77 George H.W. Bush has left its traditional theater of operations just off the Straits of Hormuz, a critical choke point, where it traditionally accompanies the Stennis, and has parked… right next to Syria.

The Obama administration on Wednesday backed off a draft policy to restrict target shooting on federal land near residential areas.

In a memo, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he would direct his agency to “take no further action to develop or implement” the draft. U.S. News & World Report posted a copy of the memo on its website.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, as Freud supposedly said, but when is a cigarette a cigarette?

The city filed suit last week against a “roll your own” cigarette shop in Chinatown and a related one on Staten Island, where a pack of cigarettes can cost less than $5, because the stores are not collecting cigarette taxes. The stores, both called Island Smokes, do not sell packs of Marlboros and Newports. Instead, they sell loose tobacco and cigarette papers, and have machines that let customers fabricate their own cigarettes.

Are we to thank God – or government – for the gifts we receive?

November 1621: Governor Obama of Plymouth Colony prepares for the first Thanksgiving with his scribe, the boy Jay.

“How are preparations for our Thanksgiving Day feast proceeding, young Jay? I am eager to share the blessings wrought by hope and change, and the bounty that I have brought to this needy land and its humble yet dignified people.”

“Yes, Governor, about the feast. I’m afraid we don’t have much in the way of food.”

“But I decreed a feast.”

“Yes, I remember the speech. One of your best.”

“And we have just been through Recovery Summer. Vice Governor Biden spoke at length about it.”

“At great length, yes, sir.”

Industrial Policy: Not only do taxpayers subsidize failing green energy here, they may soon be on the hook for a Department of Energy loan to a firm owned by a Russian billionaire. Just say nyet.

When a foreign firm wants to build a facility in the U.S. that hires American workers and pays American taxes, we welcome it. We’d prefer they do it with their own money, not rely on this administration’s failed industrial policy to provide them with a huge taxpayer-backed loan — especially when it’s owned by a billionaire who doesn’t need the help.

My wife and I just watched a History Channel show, “After Oil.” It is one of the most unintentionally funny shows we have seen in a long time.

The premise is that, one day, all the undrilled oil in the world vansihes. Not used up, just vanished. Perhaps it has a temper tantrum; perhaps it is just out of town on a trip. Perhaps it has been stolen by aliens. However, this fantasy is to be taken seriously.

In 2008, the NH Secretary of State and the Ballot Law Commission removed Presidential candidate Sal Mohammad because he was not a natural born citizen. Because President Obama is also not a natural born citizen, the NH legislature passed a law last year that required a statement that the candidate meets the qualifications under the Constitution to serve as President. Last Friday a hearing was conducted by the Ballot Law Commission for the complaint that Barack Obama is not a natural born citizen based on decided law in the US Supreme Court ruling Minor v Happersett and; documentary evidence that President Obama could not pass an e-verify check, the SSN he uses was issued in CT (SSA has now made the number assignments random so Americans can’t check them anymore) and failure of the SSNVS check. The complaint requested that Barack Obama should be removed from the ballot. The complaint was filed by Orly Taitz, esq and supported by NINE state representatives. The commission ruled that since Obama paid the $1,000 fee and he filled out the required form, his name could appear on the ballot.

What Does the GOP Really Want in 2012? by Karen Kwiatkowski

…..The GOP wants and needs four more years of Obamanation in order to continue its plan of corralling and branding intransigent and increasingly sophisticated state’s rights-asserting, small government freethinkers. But the GOP cowboys are long in the tooth, and their horses keep coming up lame.

Karen Kwiatkowski

The GOP establishment wants, and needs, more time to work the Republican herd. They’ll do this much as they did in 2008. Destroy electable candidates and run losing liberal nominees. Thus, we see the GOP leadership express great satisfaction with Romney and Perry, both big spending statists, while doing everything they can to destroy the reputations of the Republicans with more grass roots appeal, like Cain and Ron Paul. Cain’s crossover appeal to the neocon, progressive, and small government wings of the GOP was frightening – he might have actually won, and then try to change the status quo – and thus he had to be taken out. I doubt Cain would ever have attempted real change, but I’m not as paranoid as the GOP establishment.

Making the World Safe for Death and Destruction

World War I was the defining moment in the modern era, marking the death of monarchical Europe, the introduction of modern warfare to the global scene, the dawn of a frightening new system in war making and governance. For the United States, it was more transformative than any other event, other than perhaps Lincoln’s war or maybe World War II. It was an unspeakable tragedy, consuming almost 20 million lives and opening the door to the totalitarian takeover of Russia and later Germany. Nothing in history is more important to study, which is why it is particularly sad that in America’s government schools it tends to be poorly taught or deemphasized in comparison to its more popular sequel.

Raico calls World War I “The Turning Point” in the first chapter of his book. At just 52 pages, this chapter is the best World War I summary of its length I have read. For everyone very familiar with the war, this chapter is still worth reviewing, with many rich footnotes, containing nuggets that are bound to be new for almost anyone.

NWV News — Oregon Sheriff Gil Gilbertson Continues Stand Against U.S. Forest Service

November 23, 2011 1 comment

Josephine County, Ore. — Two months ago Gil Gilbertson, the sheriff of this rural county in southern Oregon, drafted a 10-page report exploring the origins and extent of federal power within a state and emailed his findings to various parties, asking for comment.

Since the report was in rough-draft form he was somewhat surprised that it went viral, but it shows there are a lot of people hungry for information about how much power (particularly law-enforcement power) the federal government actually wields within a state, where that power comes from, and the limits to that power.

Gilbertson continued his research and recently completed a 13-page revised and updated version, retitled: Unraveling Federal Jurisdiction within a State. It is highly footnoted with references to statutes and court decisions.

This a “must read” for anyone concerned about infringements against the 10th Amendment and federal encroachments in general – like road closures, Wild Lands and Monument designations, mining and other resource uses. In other words, this is for anyone and everybody with an interest – no matter how casual — in accessing the public lands, either as a “resource user” (a rancher or miner) or simply a casual vacationer who enjoys weekend camping.

The Doomsday Project and Deep Events: JFK, Watergate, Iran-Contra, and 9/11

November 23, 2011 Leave a comment

“I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency [the National Security Agency] and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision, so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.”

– Senator Frank Church (1975)

I would like to discuss four major and badly understood events – the John F. Kennedy assassination, Watergate, Iran-Contra, and 9/11. I will analyze these deep events as part of a deeper political process linking them, a process that has helped build up repressive power in America at the expense of democracy.

In recent years I have been talking about a dark force behind these events — a force which, for want of a better term, I have clumsily called a “deep state,” operating both within and outside the public state. Today for the first time I want to identify part of that dark force, a part which has operated for five decades or more at the edge of the public state. This part of the dark force has a name not invented by me: the Doomsday Project, the Pentagon’s name for the emergency planning “to keep the White House and Pentagon running during and after a nuclear war or some other major crisis.”1

My point is a simple and important one: to show that the Doomsday Project of the 1980s, and the earlier emergency planning that developed into it, have played a role in the background of all the deep events I shall discuss.

More significantly, it has been a factor behind all three of the disturbing events that now threaten American democracy. The first of these three is what has been called the conversion of our economy into a plutonomy – with the increasing separation of America into two classes, into the haves and the have-nots, the one percent and the 99 percent. The second is America’s increasing militarization, and above all its inclination, which has become more and more routine and predictable, to wage or provoke wars in remote regions of the globe. It is clear that the operations of this American war machine have served the one percent.2

“Do you see this soldier in this checkpoint?” Iraqi Wael al-Khafaji asked a Reuters reporter, pointing to a spot just a few feet from his Baghdad barbershop. “He can do whatever he wants to me right now and I can’t say a word. Is this democracy?”

Before the U.S. invasion, this businessman – like millions of other Iraqis – was ruled by a distant dictator who had little direct influence on his life. Today, everything he does takes place under the shadow cast by armed men who have given themselves permission to brutalize or kill anybody who refuses to obey them.

We know why you joined the force. You wanted to protect the weak and the innocent from the strong and vicious. You desired a society where justice is done, the guilty punished. You abhor the use of violence against women and children. You wanted to stand for good, protect those who need protection. Are you doing this now?

Setting himself far apart from his Republican colleagues, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul on Tuesday night suggested that the U.S. should have less involvement in Israel’s affairs.

“I think they’re quite capable of taking care of themselves,” he said.

The statement came in response to a question in a Tuesday night debate about whether the GOP candidates would, as president, support Israel in an attack against Iran.

Polls Show That They Are Absolutely Worthless

Most Iowans are familiar with the saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Iowa, just give it a few minuets because it is bound to change.” Rapid temperature changes are not the only thing that Iowa is known for these days. It could also be said that if you don’t like which presidential candidate is leading in the polls, just wait a few days, because it’s bound to change.

To date, five of the eight presidential candidates have led a poll of likely caucus goers in Iowa. To put that into perspective, at this time four years ago, only one candidate had led in the polls in Iowa – Mitt Romney. Mike Huckabee would go on to overtake Romney in the polls before he easily won the caucuses, but it shows just how volatile the support of the candidates is this year.

“All-American Muslim,” a new program on The Learning Channel that is being touted as a “powerful series” that carries viewers “inside the rarely seen world of American Muslims,” is being dropped by advertisers.

Critics say the program is nothing more than video jihad propaganda, and the Florida Family Association says it is contacting companies whose advertising appears on the show to ask them to quit. So far, 18 of 20 companies contacted have done so, the group said.

Obama is Running an Occupy Wall Street Campaign

Real Politics ^ | November 23, 2011 | Charles Krauthammer

“Everything he (Obama) does is about campaigning. He gave up the governance phase of this term about three months ago,” Charles Krauthammer said Tuesday evening on FOX News‘ “Special Report” program.

“This payroll tax cut and demanding that it be paid for by taxing the 1%. It’s part of an Occupy Wall Street campaign. That’s what he is running. It’s you and me, the president is saying, against the 1%. This is what everything he does has to do with. He doesn’t expect any of this ever to end up being enacted. It’s all a pose,” Krauthammer said.

Texas Couple Fined $7,000 for Posting Sign in Yard

November 23, 2011 Leave a comment

When Johnnie and Clara Russell posted a small yard sign on their own North Texas property outside Ft. Worth several years ago, they did not expect that they would have to seek government permission first. The sign, which promoted an event called “Wake Up America” for conservative pundit Glenn Beck’s “9/12 Project,” provoked the ire of one of their neighbors, who complained to authorities.

The Blaze reports:

Apparently the sign violated the rules of the Homeowners Association (HOA) that governed the subdivision where the Russells lived. And although Mr. & Mrs. Russell claim they never joined the association, never paid dues to the association, and never signed any papers acknowledging the association as a governing body with rules over their property, they were sued for violating the rules.

Congress and Secrecy by Andrew P. Napolitano

November 23, 2011 1 comment

Our representatives in the House and in the Senate have made a mockery of our Constitution. The secret supercommittee – around which have swirled all sorts of rumors about raising taxes and increasing regulations – has effectively become the Congress. Once it reports whatever it has agreed to, Congress cannot debate that report. Congress cannot publicly discuss that report. Congress cannot amend that report. Congress can only vote that report up or down. This modern-day Privy Council has robbed you of your representation in government and the transparency guaranteed by the Constitution.

What can we do about this? We can continue to challenge the government, and we can throw out of office any member of Congress who favors secrecy over freedom. Read more…

The Curse of Instigationism by Thomas DiLorenzo

November 23, 2011 2 comments

Of all the Republican presidential candidates, only Ron Paul believes in and adheres to the American foreign policy philosophy of Washington and Jefferson. For this he, and all other like-minded statesmen over the past seven decades, have been misleadingly smeared as “isolationists.” In this context, “isolationist” is truly Orwellian. By advocating peace and free trade, and only supporting just and defensive war, Ron Paul is advocating the maximum possible interaction between the peoples of the world.

(This was written by my friend which gave me permission to share.)

The current adminiatration and now the “Occupy” movement have been accused of leaning as far left as it is possible to do, which means Marxism aka Communism aka International or Global Socialism, or alternatively National Socialism or Anarchism. But how can anyone decide if there is any truth in that accusation, or even determine if it is good or bad for America, if they don’t know what those terms mean?

Gunny G: What Would Chesty Puller Do?

We live in extraordinary times. Often we hear people say, or write, what would so-and-so do in this or that case?

True, the Chesty Pullers, the George Pattons, MacArthurs, Smedley Butlers, Curt LeMays, Evans Carlsons, etc. are no longer with us. But are men of like courage now gone altogether? God knows, it would be very difficult for such men to even get a toe-hold in today’s pc world.

But, who knows, perhaps they are out there somewhere, just biding their time, waiting for the right time, the right place, the right situation–we’ll see won’t we.

The following article is about one of these non-pc individuals.

Police say a man wearing shorts and a tank top left a suitcase at Cafe Marco on Tuesday morning. Staff at first thought it might contain a bomb but it turned out to be stuffed with 50-dollar notes.

In Body’s Shield Against Cancer, a Culprit in Aging May Lurk

Until recently, few people gave much thought to senescent cells. They are cells that linger in the body even after they have lost the ability to divide.

But on Nov. 2, in what could be a landmark experiment in the study of aging, researchers at the Mayo Clinic reported that if you purge the body of its senescent cells, the tissues remain youthful and vigorous.

The experiment was just in mice, and it cleared the cells with a genetic technique that cannot be applied to people. Like all critical experiments, it needs to be repeated in other labs before it can be accepted with confidence.
