The Birth of American Imperialism by Thomas DiLorenzo

January 20, 2012 2 comments

In The Costs of War (edited by John Denson), historian Joseph Stromberg referred to the Spanish-American War of 1898 as a “trial run” for the American empire. The war had nothing to do with national defense and was purely an act of imperialism on the part of the U.S. government, which gained control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands.

It led the renowned late nineteenth-century libertarian scholar, William Graham Sumner of Yale, to compose a famous essay entitled “The Conquest of the United States by Spain.” The essay described how the war transformed America from a constitutional republic into an imperialist power, just like the old Spanish Empire it defeated in the war.

Sumner also forecast what was to come, and what America is today: the policeman of the world, with a military presence in over 100 countries, with endless meddling in the affairs of just about everyone on the planet. As he wrote in War and Other Essays, “We were told that we needed Hawaii in order to secure California. What shall we now take in order to secure the Philippines? . . . . We shall need to take China, Japan, and the East Indies . . . . in order to ‘secure’ what we have. Of course this means that . . . we must take the whole earth in order to be safe on any party of it, and the fallacy stands exposed.”

Stromberg’s analysis of the importance of the Spanish-American War as a “trial run” for American imperialism is an astute analysis, but the real trial run actually occurred more than thirty years earlier during what Stromberg called the U.S. government’s war against “internal independent nations,” i.e., the Plains Indians. That is where the real template of American imperialism was set, with its demonization of the Indians as inhuman “wild beasts”; the mass murder of everyone and everything, women, children, and animals included; and the policy of unconditional surrender. Indeed, it may even be argued that the War to Prevent Southern Independence was inself a “trial run” for the twenty-five year war on the Plains Indians.

Sherman’s War of Extermination

As soon as the War to Prevent Southern Independence was concluded the U.S. government commenced a new war against the Plains Indians. On June 27, 1865, barely two months after the end of the war, General William Tecumseh Sherman was given command of the Military District of the Missouri, which was one of five military divisions the government had divided the country into. There was never any attempt to hide the fact that the war against the Plains Indians was, first and foremost, an indirect subsidy to the government-subsidized transcontinental railroads. Railroad corporations were the financial backbone of the Republican Party, which essentially monopolized national politics from 1865 to 1913, beginning with the election of the first Republican President, the renowned railroad industry lawyer/lobbyist, Abraham Lincoln of the Illinois Central.

American Empire Before the Fall. By Bruce Fein. Campaign for Liberty, 2010. Vii + 219 pages.

Portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Rembrandt Peal...

Image via Wikipedia

It is hardly news that George Bush’s Iraq War has been a disastrous failure and that Barack Obama, learning nothing from his predecessor, has renewed and expanded our crusade in Afghanistan. Criticisms of recent American policy have not been slow in coming, and Bruce Fein, in this excellent book, has given us one of the best of these. But he does more than this. He embeds his criticism of our current military misadventures within a full-scale account of the history of American foreign policy.

As Fein sees matters, our country began well. Washington and Jefferson rejected empire and instead sought to limit military action to the defense of the United States. Unfortunately, the lesser lights who assumed control of American foreign policy in the nineteenth century proved unequal to the task of upholding the wisdom of the Founding Fathers. Fein sees an early portent of trouble in the Monroe Doctrine, which exceeds the bounds of strict self-defense. Matters really got out of hand with the Mexican War, clearly an imperialist venture; and since then our policy has abandoned restraint, culminating in the twentieth century with the pursuit of world mastery.

Fein raises a simple and devastating objection to the dominant thrust of our foreign policy. Why should we involve ourselves in foreign wars when victory for the party we oppose would pose no threat to us? Suppose, e.g., that the Taliban were to overthrow the Karzai government and regain power. Henry Kissinger, who evidently takes his sorry record under Nixon to qualify him to render further advice, warns of the dire danger posed by a Taliban victory. In a brilliant riposte, Fein says, “Kissinger is unable to articulate a single coherent national security interest of the United States that rides on the outcome of the Afghan war. He sermonizes that if [the] Taliban prevails, the fall-out will threaten Pakistan, India, Russia, China, and Indonesia — but the United States is omitted from the list.” (p.168, emphasis in original) Fein goes on to dispute Kissinger’s assessment of the threats to these other nations, but his fundamental point is that “enemy” control of other nations does not endanger the United States. Given the manifest costs of wars in death and destruction, not to mention their tendency to aggrandize the State and assault civil liberties, the case against our reckless policy of aggression is conclusive.

The Correct Definition of “Armageddon”

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

As of late, all we have been hearing from the hyper leftist propaganda news media – is that, “America is in a fiscal “Armageddon”. The media and ‘MarxistWashington D.C. has been pushing crisis after crisis in their never ending evil designs to seize more and more power and control over our Republic form of democracy.

The word “Armageddon” – which has been used continually by these fear mongers,- has been used by many in many different ways and in many different contexts to describe a situation of gloom or pending catastrophe, but sadly when this word (Armageddon) is used it is ALWAYS taken out of its original biblical context, thus clouding and distorting the seriousness of its meaning and watering down its horrific sobering realities of the godless world’s FINAL global battle against Almighty God (Rev. 16:13-16).”but sadly when this word is used it is ALWAYS taken out of its original biblical context, thus clouding and distorting the seriousness of its meaning and watering down its horrific sobering realities of the godless world’s “Final Global Battle” against Almighty God”

As far back as the pre-flood world, Almighty God has spoken of a Day when He would judge the world for their lawless and rebellious violations against the ETERNAL (spiritual and natural) absolutes of Almighty God(Jude 1:14-15). Mankind – who lives in his fallen darkened subjective world – has rejected the ETERNAL sovereignty of Almighty God – his Creator – and has been at continual war against Him since Adam’s fall (Gen.3, Rom. 1:18-32; 3, 5:12-21).

As mankind has spread out into all four corners of the earth since the judgment at the Tower of Babel, he has ONLY increasingly manifested and blossomed into the godless, lawless and violent individual that has ravished him since his fall (Gen 8:21, Rom. 1:18-32 ; 3). 6000 years of human history has overwhelmingly and exponentially demonstrated to all without any shadow of a doubt mankind’s absolute bankrupt condition when pertaining to the ETERNAL RIGHTEOUS ABSOLUTES of Almighty God.

The Che Guevara Democrat Party

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

Those who contribute to, vote for, or otherwise support today’s Democrat party need to catch up to the curve. These are not your father’s Democrats. George McGovern would be a moderate in this party.

This is the party that rejected Hillary Clinton because she was not left enough. Instead it literally took a Marxist street agitator from the Chicago political machine and put him in the White House. Barack Obama was actually teaching the social manipulation methods of openly communist revolutionary Saul Alinsky to other Marxist revolutionaries for the radical communist front group ACORN. His weird name reflects his personal rejection of American culture. This is the person today’s Democrat party wanted for President. But it is not just him. The leader of the House Democrats is former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, ultraleft San Francisco Democrat totem. She is virtually as far left as Obama, and her public statements make Sarah Palin seem like a Ph.D. in economics. She keeps telling us that unemployment insurance payments are the best way to restore booming economic growth and prosperity.

Secret Service investigating Jewish newspaper column that discussed Obama assassination

The Secret Service says it is looking into a recent op-ed from an Atlanta publisher that floated the idea of green-lighting Israeli Mossad agents to assassinate President Obama in order to improve Israel’s security against enemies like Iran.

The publisher and author, Andrew Adler, reportedly has apologized.

But Jewish advocacy groups condemned his comments as “outrageous,” and Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the agency is “aware” of the incident.

“We’re conducting the appropriate investigative steps,” he told FoxNews.com.

Ogilvie would not comment on whether Adler has been contacted or whether his column was deemed a potential threat to the president.

In the Jan. 13 column in the Atlanta Jewish Times, Adler floated three scenarios for how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would deal with a nuclear Iran and other threats in the region.

Who will win the Republican primary in South Carolina? (all predict a Newt win)

washingtonpost.com ^ | 1/20/2012 | PostOpinions staff

Will Newt Gingrich stop Mitt Romney in South Carolina, or will Romney rack up another victory? Can Rick Santorum maintain any momentum from his showing in Iowa? Will Ron Paul surprise critics who insist he can’t win? We asked PostOpinions columnists, bloggers and editors how the candidates will stack up in Saturday’s South Carolina Republican primary election.

JONATHAN BERNSTEIN

Predicted standings: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul

Newt has taken a real lead in the polls and should hold it through Saturday. Perhaps the bigger question right now is whether Santorum finishes strong enough to stay in the race a while longer, or whether his voters leave for the South Carolina frontrunners. My guess is that he revives a bit to finish in third place.

Newt and why have people lost their minds?

Blind Eye Jones | Blind Eye Jones

Have people lost their minds over Newt? Like Obama, Newt will say anything the public wants to hear — but look at his record. I think the ethic violations, the extra marital affairs on 2 of his 3 wives, the Washington insider parked at the trough of Fanny and Freddy, the Pelsoi engagement, social engineering remarks, etc. , make him anything but principled conservative. It’s just that he, like Obama, knows what buttons to push.

Added to that I think he is an old aged, fat, white haired egomaniac trying to be relevant touting his academic pretensions. Obama and the Democrats will eat him up like McCain.

Vote conservative, if you must, but rethink Newt.

The Center for Public Integrity released a new report on Obama’s 2012 bundlers yesterday:

Dozens of Obama’s elite donors — many of them wealthy business figures — have been appointed to advisory panels and commissions that can play a role in setting government policy. Others have been invited to a range of exclusive White House briefings, holiday parties and splashy social events.

And some have snagged lucrative government contracts that benefit their business interests or investment portfolios, a Center for Public Integrity investigation has found.

Here’s the breakdown:

At least 68 of 350 Obama bundlers for the 2012 election or their spouses have served in the administration, ranging from seats on advisory boards that tackle critical national issues such as economic growth, to ceremonial posts such as serving on the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Hackers Take Down DOJ and FBI Sites After Piracy Arrests

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

A coalition of hacker activists known as “Anonymous” — styling itself a “hacktivist” collective that fights for Internet freedom — took credit for bringing down websites belonging to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Copyright Office, and multiple heavy-hitting industry association sites. Most of the websites were back online by Friday morning.

The attack followed a major international piracy crackdown against the file-sharing firm Megaupload.com. American officials shut down the site — among the most trafficked in the world — and helped arrest at least four people in New Zealand accused of operating what the U.S. government called “an international organized criminal enterprise.” MegaUpload executives, none of whom are U.S. citizens, rejected the charges but remain in custody.

Internet activists and hackers, meanwhile, immediately sprang into action following news of the arrests. Anonymous used what is known as a “distributed denial of service” (DDoS) attack to target the U.S. government — including the White House — as well as top lobbying groups for Hollywood and the music industry. The well-known technique essentially floods a website with online traffic and eventually overloads its servers, causing it to temporarily shut down.

America’s Last Chance By Paul Craig Roberts…

America’s Last Chance
Global Research, January 15, 2012
America has one last chance, and it is a very slim one. Americans can elect Ron Paul President, or they can descend into tyranny.

Why is Ron Paul America’s last chance?

Because he is the only candidate who is not owned lock, stock, and barrel by the military-security complex, Wall Street, and the Israel Lobby.

All of the others, including President Obama, are owned by exactly the same interest groups. There are no differences between them. Every candidate except Ron Paul stands for war and a police state, and all have demonstrated their complete and total subservience to Israel. The fact that there is no difference between them is made perfectly clear by the absence of substantive issues in the campaigns of the Republican candidates.

Only Ron Paul deals with real issues, so he is excluded from “debates” in which the other Republican candidates throw mud at one another: “Gingrich voted $60 million to a UN program supporting abortion in China.” “Romney loves to fire people.”

The mindlessness repels.

The Day the Media Died…

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

When Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich took aim and fired at CNN’s John King last night, the shot was not only heard—but even celebrated—across the fruited plain. The long suffering peanut gallery known as We the People, steadfastly shut out by the crass mainstream media, exploded in millions of private front room television standing O’s.The whole of America is going to Hades in a Marxist-manufactured Hand-basket; drowning in debt, marshaled into Banana Republic status through massive loss of jobs and homes just one day after the Obama rejection of the job-providing Keystone Pipeline, and what does King open last night’s debate with? A question about the public linen washing of Newt Gingrich’s ex.Gingrich is Friday morning’s hero not because he’s a spousal saint but because his well-aimed shot at the mainstream media shattered their glass ceiling.

In effect, Newt set We the People free from the lies of Obama—the lies of Obama being trotted out daily by ‘journalists’ as the “news”.Sarah Palin told Sean Hannity she likes to call the media “dumbarses”. “Hours before the airing of a controversial ABC News interview with Gingrich’s ex-wife, Palin appeared on Thursday’s radio edition of the Sean Hannity Show. She noted that Marianne Gingrich’s claim that Newt wanted an “open marriage” will do anything but damage his 2012 hopes. newsmax.com, Jan. 19, 2012.“I call them dumbarses,” said Palin in the interview, referring to the media.

“They, thinking that by trotting out this old Gingrich divorce interview that’s old news—and it does feature a disgruntled ex, claiming that it would destroy his campaign—all this does, Sean, is incentivize conservatives and independents who are so sick of the politics of personal destruction, because it’s played so selectively by the media, that their target, in this case Newt, he’s now going to soar even more.

Auditing the FED’s Gold by Gary North

January 20, 2012 1 comment

I have posted a video of something I thought I would never see: all five of the Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate verbally demanding an audit of the Federal Reserve System. You can see it here.

Bernanke is facing what no Federal Reserve chairman has ever faced: public awareness of the Federal Reserve System. From late December 1913, when an almost deserted Senate voted for the Federal Reserve Act, until 2008, when the recession confirmed Ron Paul‘s warning in late 2007, there was almost no public awareness or even a vague understanding of the Federal Reserve System. The genie is now out of the bottle, where it had been corked since 1913. Ron Paul has uncorked it.

From the November 1910 secret meeting at Georgia’s Jekyll Island until Ron Paul’s 2007 candidacy for the Republican nomination for President, The Federal Reserve had received a free ride from Congress. There had never been much oversight. That’s because FED regulation was an oversight. (The same word is used to convey opposite meanings.)

Santorum: State Murder as a ‘Moral Enterprise’ by William Norman Grigg

January 20, 2012 1 comment

“God did not just give us rights,” pontificated His High Holiness Rick Santorum during a January 17 campaign stop in Lexington, South Carolina. “He gave us a moral code by which to exercise them. See, that’s what Ron Paul sort of leaves out. He leaves out [that the] rights and responsibilities that we have come from God…. And he says, `No, we just have rights, and then that’s it.’ No, we don’t. America is a moral enterprise.” And morality, Santorum believes, is best instilled through State coercion, including officially sanctioned murder.

Santorum presented that assessment just a few hours after a GOP debate in which Dr. Paul precipitated torrential booing from the pious Republican crowd by insisting that government is bound by the central tenet of the Christian moral code – the Golden Rule.

According to Newt Gingrich – whose General Urko act drove the assembled Republicans into a simian frenzy of bloodlust – it is “irrational” of Paul to insist that there are limits on the government’s powers of discretionary killing.

Elaborating on that idea in a January 18 interview with South Carolina pastor Kevin Boling, Gingrich asserted that Dr. Paul’s insistence on applying the Golden Rule to foreign policy demonstrated that he had absorbed the “anti-American, self-hating attitude of the American Left.”

How Much Economic Freedom Do We Have in the United States? by Andrew P. Napolitano

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

The root of economic freedom is the recognition of the right to own private property. That includes the right to utilize it unmolested, to dispose of it without anyone’s permission and to exclude anyone from it, even the government. Suffice it to say, no American president since the advent of the income tax and the Federal Reserve 100 years ago has fully accepted or meaningfully defended that right. The more the government extracts in taxes and the more it inflates the money supply, the more it rejects and assaults property rights.

Every president in the 20th century, even Ronald Reagan, signed legislation raising income taxes. The theory behind the income tax is that the government’s need for cash is so great, it can just take it from your employer after you earn it but before your employer pays you – before you even see the cash – and use it as it sees fit. This presumes that the federal government has a greater right to your income than you do. There really can be no rationale for income taxes without that belief.

Do you know anyone outside the government who believes this?

Why did the progressives have to steal our founding fathers away from us?

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

There are many reasons, of course, but here is a good illustration:

This would have resonated very well among Americans in 1912, because back in those days we knew full well who the founders were, it had been in the textbooks. Even a century after Washington’s passing, his star was so bright, he was such an incredible role model, that the point of this cartoon is impossible to miss – “Theodore Roosevelt, YOU are no George Washington!”

What the progressives had to do, is clear. Revise history. One of the first places that progressives established as a stronghold was academia, you may know that Woodrow Wilson was the president of Princeton for 6 years. Having complete control over the universities afforded progressives a great opportunity. Someone gets the bright idea about removing The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution from school books, give it a short time for people to forget, then they’ve given themselves a convenient way to now attack the Founders for being racists. Then they could remove from the textbooks that several of our Founders were dirt poor. Now the progressives can sneer at our Founders for being nothing but a bunch of rich white racist elitists. And finally, it’s put into motion to take the Founder’s faith out of the textbooks, now the Founders really aren’t even the Founders. Rich athiest racists, a bunch of white elitists who now only exist on a bunch of old dusty documents. Why on earth would you consider any of them a role model?

This was done so the progressives could rule over us.

Ayatollah Santorum the Sanctimonious ASS by Thomas DiLorenzo

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

In a January 18 interview with Glenn Beck Rick Santorum decided to compare his view of the Constitution with that of Ron Paul. His statements can only be described as delusional and totalitarian.Santorum first claimed to have read an eighteenth-century dictionary that defined happiness as “to do the morally right thing.” This is how the founding fathers defined happiness, he said.

This is Santorum’s definition of “happiness,” not the founding fathers. It’s a good bet he is lying when claiming to have read an eighteenth-century dictionary.

But I suppose anything is possible with a man who brought his deceased infant home who died two hours after birth and slept with it after showing it to his children, as Santorum admits to have done. The freedom to do whatever you want to do – as long as you do not harm anyone else or interfere in their equal freedom – would “lead to libertinism and lead to chaos” said Sanctimonious Santorum, who has also pledged to do what he can to put an end to contraception if elected president.

Contraception changes “the way things ought to be,” he says. Santorum is self assured that he, and he alone, understands “the way things ought to be” and pledges to use the powers of the state to forcefully impose his “understanding” on the entire country. But the founding fathers are known as champions of freedom, are they not?

But what kind of freedom? According to Santorum, who apparently fancies himself as an historian, freedom in America means “the freedom to do what you ought to do – what you are properly ordered to do [by a politician like himself] – as someone living a good, decent, and ordered life” emphasis added. “That’s the differentiation that I believe Ron Paul and I have with respect to what liberty is,” said Santorum.

Obama Will Give Missile Tech To Russia Despite Law

It appears that Barack Obama has again ignored the rule of law by signing a defense appropriations bill that prohibits him sharing vital United States leading-edge strategic US missile technology with Russia, yet he has told both houses of Congress that he plans to share the US missile technology anyway. Why is this important? Because it goes light-years beyond partisan politics and into an area where our national defense will be put at unreasonable risk. It is believed that the Russians will pass this technology onto China, Iran and North Korea.

(VIDEO AT LINK)

“One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a Libertarianish right.

They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues.

That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that I’m aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.”

- Rick Santorum

First off, the phrase “radical individualism” is something I expect to hear from a Saudi imam. Hell, I wouldn’t be too surprised to hear it from leftists in this country. When I hear it from a Republican candidate for president, I sit blinking for a couple of minutes and then curl up in a ball under my desk, crying softly.

As I watch the media circus surrounding Marianne Gingrich’s interview regarding her relationship with her ex-husband and GOP candidate, Newt Gingrich, I am once again reminded of the double standard afforded to the Democrats and Barack Obama in particular. Coming on the heels of the Herman Cain melee in which the press had a field day parading one accuser after another before video cameras, it is difficult not to repeat the question of why the Democrats get a free pass. Why are calls for Mitt Romney to release his tax return not met with calls for Barack Obama to release his college transcripts — something that is just as customary for presidential candidates?

Did Fox News try to censor Glenn Beck before the media giant left the cable network last year?

The answer is yes, according to Beck, who made the disclosure this week on his new television program on GBTV.com.

Beck was discussing comments made by longtime PBS news commentator Bill Moyers who was defending leftist billionaire George Soros.

Moyers had said Soros has “been the victim, of course, of Glenn Beck and the right-wing, the Fox News assassins.”

In response to Moyers’ comment, Beck explained that his own former network tried to get him to clam up about his constant reporting on what he felt was Soros’ fiendish agenda to harm the American way of life.

“Here’s the real reason why George Soros is worried about little old me and the assassins, because I know the truth about him,” said Beck.

Prison Planet.com » The Pentagon Admits An Elite US Commando Team Has Been Deployed Near Iran

January 20, 2012 Leave a comment

The SEAL Team that stormed Osama bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound last May put special forces commandos on the map.

Without SEAL Team 6′s exploits that day, there is little doubt reports of a new commando team in the Persian Gulf would have raised an eyebrow.

As it is, military blogs are buzzing about Spencer Ackerman’s story at Danger Room where he reports that a new “elite commando team” is operating in the Gulf region.

Ackerman spoke with military sources that say the team, called Joint Special Operations Task Force-Gulf Coordinating Council (JSOTF-GCC), is on the ground to instruct local troops in special operations. This is the first time the U.S. has acknowledged the existence of the team.

Ackerman admits there is no proven connection to the Iranian scientist who was assassinated several days ago, and says many special-ops guys dismiss the news, saying that the new task force is simply there to advise and any connection to Iran will be “indirect at most.”

Which doesn’t make it any less interesting to add to the pile of rumors and tensions piling out of the Persian Gulf, but there are special forces teams assigned to hot-spots all over the world, and the public generally has no clue at all.

There are 2,500 Navy SEALs, about half of which are based at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base and Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach, with 2,400 assigned to the Special Warfare Command (SWC).

Following action by a grand jury, the feds arrested four people and executed more than 20 search warrants in the United States and eight foreign countries. They seized 18 domain names and around $10 million in assets, including a number of servers.

The grand jury indictment accuses Megaupload of causing $500 million in damages to copyright owners and of making $175 million through selling ads and premium subscriptions, according to the New York Times.

Prison Planet.com » Debate Audience Protests CNN Attempts To Exclude Ron Paul

A remarkable scene unfolded during last night’s CNN hosted South Carolina debate when not once but twice, the audience had to intervene to ensure that Ron Paul be included in questions, as host John King attempted to skip over the Congressman following answers from the other three candidates.

Even more remarkable was the fact that both times the questions were related to medical issues and Ron Paul is the only qualified doctor among all the candidates.

Between the sideshow of Newt Gingrich’s infidelity and yet more mudslinging and circus like back and forths between Romney, Gingrich and Santorum, Ron Paul did his best to speak on real issues such as cutting foreign military spending, protecting the borders and the need to reform the government-run health care system.

However, when it came to two key questions it was left to the audience to remind the CNN anchors that Ron Paul was up on the stage and that voters wanted to hear him speak.
