What does Semper Fi mean?

Is it just an abbreviation for Semper Fidelis?

Where did it come from?

How?

Why?

A Little Clue: 

It’s sorta like the old “Sorry Bout Dat” that the hippies used to be so fond of using back in the sixties! Some of you old timers will remember that…and, like semper fi, it caught on and is again being used by, perhaps, millions of unknowing folks out there across the land.
