There is presently, and has been, a lotta bs going around online regarding the origin and history of "Devil Dog"...

Seems new age Marines dislike the term now. There has also been bs in the past with the terms  Semper Fi vs Semper Fidelis; Gung Ho, etc, etc...

When I joined the Corps in 1952 I had the honor, and pleasure of serving with many Old Corps Marines–ya can learn a lot from Old Corps, non-pc Marines! I recall one old T/Sgt (the gunny) of my 1952 experience clueing me in on the term “Jarhead“! No, it had nothing to do with square-headed Marines, the high and tight haircut, dress blue collars, etc. It was simply a carry-over from the days when Marines still used mules (the animal kind) and they were commonly called jugheads, and sometimes, jarheads, too. Wasn’t long before the jarhead term was applied to stubborn Marines also–and it stuck. Hopefully, this will clear up a coupla things for you thinking Marines still out there.
