Last Christmas many Dick’s customers were sent one mean lump of coal in the form of a gift certificate. All customers who pre-ordered a Troy Carbine from Dick’s for their Black Friday special had their orders cancelled and their money returned.
Following the Newtown shooting spree, Dick’s Sporting Goods changed their policy and stopped selling AR-pattern and other semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles, even the guns they had already sold.
Who Is Winning the Gun War? by Patrick J. Buchanan
Attacks from abroad – Pearl Harbor, 9/11 – have united us.
Yet domestic atrocities lately seem only to deepen our divisions.
The bombing of the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City was seized upon to savage government critics like Rush Limbaugh.
After the murder of six innocents, including a 9-year-old girl, and the wounding of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and a dozen others in Tucson, Ariz., by a certifiable lunatic, Sarah Palin was charged with moral complicity.
The slaughter of 20 first-graders at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., put the National Rifle Association in the media cross hairs. With the massacres at Columbine, Virginia Tech and Ft. Hood, Tucson and Newtown are now the primary exhibits in the prosecution case for the disarming of America.

Cuomo MagIn its rapidly expanding role of protector of the people’s right to arms, Defense Distributed is offering copies of the “Cuomo” its revolutionary 3D printed AR15 30 round magazine.
The magazine is designed to accept either hardware store or standard AR15 magazine springs, which need to be bought separately to make the magazine functional. As a bit of political history, these magazines may prove to be a curio that either sparked the start of a revolution in 3D printer manufacturing, saved the Constitution by demonstrating the insanity of attempting to outlaw boxes with springs, or both.

Gun owners who can’t buy high capacity ammo magazines because of new laws have another option: Print them.
Gun control measures passed or proposed in the wake of the Sandy Hook school massacre have targeted magazines that can feed 30 rounds or more into the firing chambers of AR-15s and other semi-automatic guns. New York has banned magazines holding more than seven rounds, and a federal bill proposed by Sen.
Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., would ban magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Rahm Emmanuel to major banks: Stop serving gun manufacturers
In a letter sent Friday to the CEOs of TD Bank and Bank of America, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel urged the banks to stop serving gun manufacturers unless they support gun control measures, CBS Chicago reported.
According to CBS, Emmanuel wants the banks to “stop lines of credit, financing for acquisitions and expansions and financial advising” unless the manufacturers agree with him on issues like background checks and what he called “commonsense reforms.”
“In the past, the gun industry has stood in opposition to these safety measures.
They opposed a ban on assault weapons on America’s streets, opposed a ban on military-style clips, opposed a criminal background check on all gun purchases and opposed any effort to crack down on criminal gun traffickers,” he wrote.
Homeland Security hoarding ammo, depriving police
Cops scramble for bullets while DHS stockpiles 1.2 billion rounds
Will the U.S. soon face a critical situation in which the federal government– primarily the Department of Homeland Security – possesses an ammunition surplus while local and state authorities face ammunition shortages and backlogs in purchasing more rounds?
Current trends could find the federal government with a strong ammunition advantage over local police and sheriff departments.
There’s no reason to ban ‘assault’ rifles…
… For the purpose of this article, we’ll focus on AR-15s since it is what CBS calls “the most popular rifle in America” and one often designated an “assault” rifle. An AR-15 is the civilian equivalent to the military’s M-16. So what’s the difference?
Kelly Alwood, a firearms trainer and consultant, told TheBlaze the only difference is that one [the military AR-15] is fully automatic and the other is semi-automatic [the civilian AR-15]. It’s a small yet simultaneously big distinction. Firearms for use by the military are able to shoot continuously with one pull of the trigger, machine-gun style. Civilian firearms, on the other hand, only allow one shot per trigger pull.
… [Calling the civilian AR-15 an "assault rifle" is] “a way to demonize something for a political agenda and misconstrue [the guns] and the public on the Second Amendment,” Alwood said.

SEMINOLE, Fla. – As a pawn shop owner, Frank James was always a big believer in gun rights and the second amendment. After all, it was his bread and butter business. But after what he saw in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, he’s had a change of heart. “I basically broke into tears and looked up on the wall, seeing the types of firearms I am selling,” James said.
At the Loan Star Pawn store in Seminole, a glass display case that once housed several Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifles is now empty. The glass counters normally filled with handguns has been completely cleared.
“I’m not going to be part of it anymore,” James said. He has several copies of the exact rifle suspected in the massacre.
“The model, the brand, everything,” he said.
The father of four said he was especially touched knowing that his youngest child, a six-year old daughter, was the same age as many of those children who were shot to death.
“I dropped my daughter off at school this morning. That was enough for me,” James said. “Conscience wins over making money.”
The store manager came into the pawn shop Monday and saw James taking down signs advertising guns, and asked him what was going on.
“He said don’t take the guns out of the safe. We’re no longer selling them,” said Leia Thomas. “I was shocked.”
Armed task force to patrol streets (Paragould, Arkansas)
In response to a recent increase in crime, Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill and Police Chief Todd Stovall offered residents at a town hall meeting Thursday night at West View Baptist Church what could be considered an extreme solution — armed officers patrolling the streets on foot.
Stovall told the group of almost 40 residents that beginning in 2013, the department would deploy a new street crimes unit to high crime areas on foot to take back the streets.
“[Police are] going to be in SWAT gear and have AR-15s around their neck,” Stovall said. “If you’re out walking, we’re going to stop you, ask why you’re out walking, check for your ID.”

[Editor's Note: Dr. Jimmy T. "Gunny" LaBaume is a retired professor of economics. He struggled to survive almost 30 years as an imperial trooper in the Marines and finally 'up and quit' when, "I got tired of committing treason". He writes passionately about individual freedom from the perspective of an anarcho-capitalist of the von Mises school. In a bit of irony, LaBaume's question, "What will it take?", sounds much like what libertarian socialist, Mikhail Bakunin, was saying when he stated: "Anyone who makes (only) plans for after the revolution is a reactionary."
The point is: A lot of libertarians make (and write extensively about) bold designs for the world "after the state has been vanquished", but they are often murky on how to bring about the end of the state or even how to live as freely as possible while the state still exists.]

Americans Endorse Right to Bear Arms, But Half Call for Stricter Gun Laws
More than seven-in-ten respondents believe the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle should only be used by the police and other authorized persons.
Nine-in-ten Americans maintain their views on the Second Amendment, but a majority of gun owners and non-gun owners alike believe that the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle should only be used by the police and other authorized persons, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.
The online survey of a representative national sample of 1,010 American adults also found that support for the “shall-issue” prerogative to carry concealed weapons in public has increased over the past six months.
Outrage Is Not an Argument
Hours after last Friday’s massacre in Aurora, Colo., New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg demanded that the two major parties’ presidential candidates explain how they plan to prevent such senseless outbursts of violence.
“No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them concretely,” Bloomberg said in a radio interview. “What are they going to do about guns?”

SWAT team’s shooting of Marine causes outrage [Jose Guerena Ortiz]
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Jose Guerena Ortiz was sleeping after an exhausting 12-hour night shift at a copper mine. His wife, Vanessa, had begun breakfast. Their 4-year-old son, Joel, asked to watch cartoons.
An ordinary morning was unfolding in the middle-class Tucson neighborhood — until an armored vehicle pulled into the family’s driveway and men wearing heavy body armor and helmets climbed out, weapons ready.
They were a sheriff’s department SWAT team who had come to execute a search warrant. But Vanessa Guerena insisted she had no idea, when she heard a “boom” and saw a dark-suited man pass by a window, that it was police outside her home. She shook her husband awake and told him someone was firing a gun outside.
Leader of Pima County’s GOP faces removal effort (Criticizing botched SWAT raid that killed Guerena)
Pima County Republican Party leaders voted late Thursday to take party chairman Brian Miller’s keys to the GOP headquarters away and call a special meeting to try to remove him from his post.
Miller has been under fire from party stalwarts for the past month, with multiple meetings called in recent weeks after he criticized a SWAT raid in May that resulted in the shooting death of a man law enforcement officers said they suspected of involvement in drug dealing.
Several elected officials and party leaders have complained that his comments pitted the party against law enforcement at a time when city elections are looming and candidates are gearing up for bigger 2012 races.
After questions were raised about the amount of police force used in serving a search warrant Miller said he hoped the incident would foster community discussion of “the policies that routinely lead to heavily armed and militarized local police invading private homes and a renewed interest in the civil liberties codified in our Bill of Rights.”
After Miller refused to resign, the executive committee voted 10-2 to order Miller to cease and desist from acting as an agent of the county committee and return his keys.
Barney Brenner, a member of the committee who voted to seek Miller’s removal, said he wished Miller had resigned to help heal the party.
Brenner said the action doesn’t reflect a rift between more libertarian-leaning Republicans, like Miller, and other more traditional party members.
“This is solely about the best interests of the Pima County Republican Party,” Brenner said, adding regardless of whether Miller meant it to happen, his words damaged the party and the ability of its candidates to raise money and support.
Miller said it is the executive committee that has kept the controversy in the forefront, by continuing to call these meetings to complain about his leadership.
He said he’s been consistent in defending the constitution.
“This is a political witch hunt,” he said, adding, “If they wanted it dropped, they would have dropped it three weeks ago.”
The meeting has yet to be scheduled. A two-thirds vote of the elected precinct committeemen will be required to remove him from office.
Miller said if he survives, he will then call a special meeting of his own to ask the precinct committeemen to vote on the performance of each member of the executive committee.

The slaughter in Tucson earlier this month of Marine veteran Jose Guerena, shot down by Tucson SWAT officers, should lead to some long, hard looks at the militarization of law enforcement, no-knock raids, and the “War on Drugs” in general. From the Arizona Daily Star:
Jose Guerena, 26, a former Marine, was sleeping after the graveyard shift at Asarco Mission mine about 9:30 a.m. when his wife woke him saying she heard noises outside and a man was at their window. Guerena told his wife to hide in a closet with their 4-year-old son, his wife has said. He grabbed an AR-15 rifle and moments later was slumped in the kitchen, mortally wounded from a hail of gunfire.
A “hail of gunfire” is right–these “peace officers” fired over 70 rounds at Guerena, with 60 hitting him. “Why,” you might ask, “was that necessary?” Good question. ABC News provides the Pima County Sheriff’s Department‘s answer:
At first the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said that Guerena fired first . . .
But that turned out to be a bit of “crime drama” fiction, apparently:
. . . but on Wednesday officials backtracked and said he had not. “The safety was on and he could not fire,” according to the sheriff’s statement.
Hmm–”could not fire,” or had chosen not to? He was, after all, a Marine combat veteran, having served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan–how plausible is it that he forgot to disengage the safety? Additionally, writer “Ghost32″ points out in HubPages, the details we’ve gotten so far indicate a rather loose set of rules of engagement:

There has been some significant speculation that everything is less than on the “up and up” based on the fact that they fired 71 rounds in this incident, have changed their story a couple of times and have been refusing to release significant information.More complete background can be found at these links:

The wife of a Tucson man killed in a Pima County SWAT raid May 5 pleaded for five minutes with 911 dispatchers to send an ambulance for her mortally wounded husband, audio records show.
Often through tears and sometimes in broken English, Vanessa Guerena, tells 911 operators that her husband had been shot by a “bunch of people” who opened the door of their southwest-side home and “just shoot him.”
Meanwhile, dispatchers worked to determine if she was calling from a house where the SWAT team was serving a search warrant, audio released Friday by Drexel Heights Fire Department reveals. It takes about an hour for waiting medics to know what happened, and the man is dead before fire crews are allowed into the home.

He Served the Empire Abroad; The Regime Killed Him in His Home
By William Grigg
May 12, 2011 “LR” — Jose Guerena survived two combat tours of Iraq, only to become a casualty of the Regime’s longest war — the one waged against its domestic subjects in the name of drug prohibition. The former Marine was slaughtered by a SWAT team during a May 5 assault on his home in Arizona.
Guerena’s wife, Vanessa, heard a noise outside the couple’s home near Tucson at about 9 a.m. Jose, who had just gone to bed after pulling a 12-hour shift at the Asarco Mine, suspected — correctly, as it turned out — that his family was threatened by an armed criminal gang. Grabbing his AR-15, Guerena instructed his wife and four-year-old son to hide in the closet while he confronted the intruders. According to Mrs. Guerena, the stormtroopers from the Pima County Regional SWAT team never identified themselves as police; they simply stormed into the home and started shooting.
“I saw this guy pointing me at the window, Vanessa recalled in a television interview. “So, I got scared. And, I got like, ‘Please don’t shoot, I have a baby.’ I put my baby [down]. [And I] put bag in window. And, I yell ‘Jose! Jose! Wake up!’”
“A deputy’s bullet struck the side of the doorway, causing chips of wood to fall on his shield,” recounts the Arizona Daily Star, paraphrasing an account provided by Pima County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) functionary Michael O’Connor. “That prompted some members of the team to think the deputy had been shot.” Guerna never fired a shot; the marauders who invaded his home fired no fewer than seventy-one. As is standard procedure in such events, the invaders claimed that Guerna had fired on the officers, as he had every moral and legal right to.
Neither Jose nor his wife had a criminal history of any kind. The attack on their home was described as a narcotics enforcement operation, but there are no reports that narcotics were found at the residence – – even though the invaders reportedly “seized” (that is, stole) something that belonged to the victim.

Arizona Sheriff Scoffs at Suggestion to Tone Down Rhetoric
FOXnews ^Posted on Thursday, February 17, 2011 7:56:18 AM by fabrizio
An outspoken Arizona sheriff has responded to a letter from the mayors of three border cities who asked him to tone down his comments on border security problems, saying, “feel free to ‘drink the Kool-Aid‘” of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke and President Obama….”The threat from an unsecured border is real, where 241,000 illegals were apprehended last year by the border patrol and an additional 400,000 got away just in Arizona alone!” the letter reads.
“These are failing grades by anyone’s score card.”….If your intent was to establish dialogue with me, you would have called, or at least waited for your letter to arrive by mail at my office, prior to releasing it to the media,”…In an interview with FoxNews.com, Babeu said he has recently increased enforcement near the border with “constant patrols” by SWAT team officers armed with AR-15s and night vision goggles.
“I’m sending out deputies to meet these armed cartel members,” Babeu said Wednesday. “And we will not use less than lethal force.” …”They want us to sit and shut up,” he said. “Well, that’s not going to happen.
This isn’t a time to sit on our hands and ignore the issue. It’s a time for action.

Obama Bans More than 100,000 American-Made Rifles
Posted: 20 Aug 2010 03:17 AM PDT
According to The Korea Times, the Obama administration has blocked efforts by the South Korean government to sell over a hundred thousand surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market. These self-loading were rifles introduced in 1926 and 1941.
As rifles, they are especially well-suited to community defense in an emergency, as in the cases of community defense following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Along with AR-15 type rifles, the M1 rifles are the quintessential firearms of responsible citizenship, precisely the type of firearms which civic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project teach people how to use.
According to a South Korean official, “The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions.”
Regarding the second objection, any firearm lawfully imported into the United States would eventually be sold by a Federal Firearm Licensee who, pursuant to the background check system imposed by Congress (and endorsed by the NRA) would have to contact federal or state law enforcement to verify that the gun buyer is not prohibited from possessing firearms.
Accordingly, the risk that the South Korean surplus guns might fall into the hands of gangsters or other bad people is exactly the same as with the sale of any other retail firearm in the United States. Notably, neither the M1 Garand nor the M1 carbine are concealable, and the M1 Garand is long, heavy, and bulky. Accordingly, the criminal utility of such guns is relatively low.
The second Obama administration objection is accidents. But in fact, increasing gun density in the United States has been associated with steeply declining rates of gun accidents. In 1948 there were .36 guns per person. (That is, about one gun for every three Americans.) By 2004, there was nearly one gun for every American. In 1948, there were 1.6 fatal gun accidents per 100,000 persons. By 2004, the rate had fallen by 86%, so that there were .22 fatal accidents per 100,000 persons. (For underlying data, see Appendix B of my amicus brief in Heller.)
Legally, it is indisputable that the guns are importable. Being over 50 years old, the rifles are automatically “Curios and Relics” according to federal law. 27 CFR section 478.11. Accordingly, they are by statutory definition importable. 18 USC section 925 (e)(1). Notwithstanding the law, the Obama administration has the ability to pressure the South Korean government to block the sale of the guns.
