Shah Gilani writes: Rampant profiteering by Congress and greedy bankers is forcing us to weigh the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune against honesty and transparency – both of which are being trampled by crony capitalists in pursuit of the almighty dollar.
What’s at stake is whether gross criminal activity and reckless disregard for the public will continue to be whitewashed by regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the U.S. Federal Reserve, courts, and Congress, which encourage half-baked civil fraud charges followed by non-prosecution agreements and nickel-and-dime fines.
And even more galling, guilty parties end up neither admitting nor denying wrongdoing.
Let’s face it, we have allowed the SEC, the Fed, and Congress to be corralled as a matter of regulatory and legislative capture by the very crooks they are responsible for policing and protecting us from.
We are lying to ourselves if we do not believe that we are all part of this problem. It’s not that most of us aren’t honest. It’s that we venerate money and wealth too much.
Rather than being disgusted by dishonest manipulators, liars and cheats, we excuse the less-than-obvious perpetrators as if their example of cutting corners to get ahead, as far ahead as possible, might clear a path for some of our own pursuits.
What have we become? Are we a nation of people with liberty and justice for all, or just a bunch of money grabbers stepping on each other’s liberties to pursue self-centered happiness by becoming filthy rich?
Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with the profit motive driving business. And there’s nothing wrong with working hard and trying to make a lot of money. Those are honorable pursuits.
China’s march through the Caribbean continues
China is continuing its bold economic and geopolitical march through the Caribbean and Latin America, using its growing economic might to dole out grant aid and soft loans to win friends and influence governments, continuing its plans to displace the United States as the region’s major trading partner in the not-too-distant future.
For two days this week, a large Chinese delegation led by Vice-Premier Wang Qishan spent hours in talks with Caribbean leaders and business delegations. By the time the forum ended in Trinidad‘s capital of Port of Spain, Beijing had unveiled measures worth $6.3 billion aimed at sealing better relations with the 15-nation Caribbean trade bloc.
Among the measures Wang announced were the aforementioned concession loans to support regional economic development, a million-dollar donation to the Caribbean Development Fund, support for building a seismic tsunami warning center, increased training of doctors and nurses and a plan to woo Chinese tourists to the Caribbean.
This week’s activities centered around the third China-Caribbean forum and attracted more presidents and prime ministers than any of the previous forums, as well as cabinet ministers and business delegations from nearly every country.
For its part, China brought 13 ministers and 80 high-level officials, some of whom sauntered off with various countries to sign bilateral agreements.

Reality Dawning by Chris Sullivan:
Many years ago, a group of disgruntled patriots, nationalists or terrorists – depending on your perspective – went into the Capitol building in D.C. and shot five congressmen. The assailants were four Puerto Rican nationalists who unfurled a flag of Puerto Rico and then fired thirty shots into the floor of the chamber. This incident happened on March 1, 1954.
As far as I know, nobody tried to claim that these people committed this act for anything other than political reasons or that “they hate us for our freedom.” One of the shooters supposedly shouted “Free Puerto Rico.”
There was no talk of “3/1 changed everything.” Everybody probably understood that the shooters wanted the US out of Puerto Rico. If someone had inquired as to why the assailants shot the congressmen, they wouldn’t have been accused of “trying to justify the terrorists,” it would have been recognized as a simple inquiry as to motive.
The same thing is true of the World Trade Center/Pentagon caper, but the public is discouraged from believing the perpetrators. Soon after the attack, Osama Bin Laden appeared in a video tape wearing his US issued Goretex camouflage jacket saying that he had nothing to do with the attack, but that he…………………..

Tax breaks for all [in Puerto Rico]
After months of work and anticipation, [Puerto Rico] Gov. [Luis] Fortuño finally unveiled his administration’s comprehensive tax reform.
At the center of the measure is an across-the-board reduction in the individual tax bracket that would result in a 49-percent overall savings in six years. Corporate reductions are slated to reach 30 percent.
The cornerstone of the tax modification is the reduction of the income tax brackets.
People making less than $20,000 would not pay any tax.
The bracket of those making $20,001 to $30,000 would be taxed 7 percent.
From $30,001 to $70,000, the allocation would be 14 percent.
The upper part of the scale, generating between $70,001 and $125,000, would pay 25 percent. Those making above $125,000 would be taxed 30 percent.
“This is more than just a Tax Reform; this is a new platform to spearhead an economic revival.
Enclosed in this document is the most comprehensive tax modification in the history of Puerto Rico,” Fortuño said. The plan, which is called Más dinero para tu bolsillo More Money in Your Pocket would start in December and would last until fiscal 2016.
The announcement came during a special joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
