Everybody knows a Walt Kowalski. He is the grizzled Korean War veteran Clint Eastwood played in the movie Gran Torino. A man who spends his days sitting on the porch, keeping his house and yard immaculate, satisfied to drink his cheap beer while watching his neighborhood and country go to hell around him.

America‘s forgotten black cowboys

Quentin Tarantino‘s Oscar-winning Western, Django Unchained, is one of relatively few Hollywood films depicting a black cowboy. In reality there were many, some of whose stories were borrowed for films starring white actors.

The most common image of the cowboy is a gun-toting, boot-wearing, white man – like John Wayne, or Clint Eastwood.

(Col Sellin) The PowerPoint rant that got a colonel fired – Army News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq – Army Times

November 14, 2012 49 comments

Army Col. Lawrence Sellin was fired two days after his sarcastic rant was published by the United Press International wire service.

Sellin was fired because he didn’t clear his remarks through public affairs and failed to clear “written or oral presentations to the media” through a designated public affairs officer. Here is what he wrote:

———

KABUL, Afghanistan — Throughout my career I have been known to walk that fine line between good taste and unemployment. I see no reason to change that now.

Consider the following therapeutic.

I have been assigned as a staff officer to a headquarters in Afghanistan for about two months. During that time, I have not done anything productive. Fortunately, little of substance is really done here, but that is a task we do well.

We are part of the operational arm of the International Security Assistance Force commanded by Army Gen. David Petraeus. It is composed of military representatives from all the NATO countries, several of which I cannot pronounce.

Officially, International Joint Command was founded in late 2009 to coordinate operations among all the regional commands in Afghanistan. More likely it was founded to provide some general a three-star command. Starting with a small group of dedicated and intelligent officers, IJC has successfully grown into a stove-piped and bloated organization, top-heavy in rank. Around here, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a colonel.

During last night’s debate, Barack Obama, the greatest man to have ever walked the face of the earth, went down in flames. Mitt Romney destroyed him in the first debate. As a political junkie, I have seen my share of debates; my favorite was Reagan/Carter in 1980, which Reagan won handily.

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI — An Ottawa County diversity group is claiming that a Grand Haven area man’s political statement — a lawn chair hangingfrom a tree — is racially insensitive and should be taken down.

Leaders of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance have scheduled a “community conversation” public meeting next Thursday at the Grand Haven Community Center to discuss the issue.

The lawn chair is suspended by a rope from a tree along Comstock Street near Peach Plain Elementary School and, according to the homeowner, is simply a take-off on Clint Eastwood‘s much-ballyhooed “empty chair rant” speech at the Republican National Convention where Eastwood was pretending to talk to President Barack Obama.

But Clint Eastwood’s 18-year-old daughter is on the receiving end of vicious public outcry after a photographic stunt with her artist boyfriend Tyler Shields backfired.

Eastwood and Shields – known for his work with video portraits and celebrity photography – decided to publicly demolish a $100,000 crocodile Hermès Birkin bag by setting it on fire before taking a chainsaw to it, all in the name of art.

J. Edgar Takes a Close Look at J. Edgar Hoover’s Career

November 13, 2011 1 comment

It is predictable that J. Edgar takes a less than favorable approach to J. Edgar Hoover, founder and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Hollywood never did embrace anti-communist stalwarts. However, this production’s treatment of Hoover is somewhat surprising seeing as it was directed by Clint Eastwood, typically a more conservative-minded presence in Hollywood. J. Edgar is expectedly an entertaining and engaging film, given the impeccable cast and direction, but its somewhat unfair depiction of Hoover undermines its overall quality.

‘J. Edgar Hoover Was NOT Gay!': FBI Warned Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio Not To Camp Up Portrayal of Bureau Chief in New Film by Paul Bentley

October 8, 2011 1 comment

Historians have for years speculated about the sexuality of the first FBI chief, J. Edgar Hoover, with some suggesting he was gay and enjoyed cross-dressing.

And with an upcoming movie about his life in the pipeline, it seems current bosses at the bureau were more than a little concerned about the whispers spreading.

When Clint Eastwood, who is directing the biopic, and Lionardo Dicaprio, who plays Hoover, met with bureau representatives to research the part, they were reportedly warned not to camp up the role.

The FBI’s assistant director Mike Kortan told them: ‘Vague rumours and fabrications have cropped up from time to time, but there is no evidence in the historical record on this issue.’

He added that he merely passed on his expertise and that ‘what they did with [the information], as with any production, has been entirely in their hands’.

The upcoming biopic about the first FBI director was written by Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote Milk, the Oscar-winning movie about the fight for gay rights in America……

J. Edgar Hoover Biopic Punts On Gay Question

September 21, 2011 Leave a comment

Clint Eastwood‘s new film about J. Edgar Hoover which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the storied FBI Director declines to expressly address his sexuality, and leaves it to viewers to draw their own conclusion about his relationship with Associate Director Clyde Tolson.

* * *

M. Wesley Swearingen, an agent from 1951 to 1977, writes in FBI Secrets about the long-standing rumors within the Bureau concerning Hoover and Tolson which include allegations that the FBI Director ignored the Mafia for decades because the wise guys had incriminating goods on the supposed lovers.

* * *

The allegations were fleshed out — so to speak — in Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summer. A review of the book (“Partners For Life”) by Sidney Urquhart for Time magazine summarizes one alleged incident as follows:

Perhaps Summers’ most bizarre revelation is an account provided by Susan Rosenstiel, the wife of a liquor distiller and gambling crony. Rosenstiel recalls attending what she thought would be an elegant private party at New York City’s Plaza Hotel in the company of lawyer Roy Cohn, Hoover and others. Instead, Cohn introduced Rosenstiel to a woman named “Mary,” dressed in a fluffy black dress, lace stockings and high heels. It was obvious Mary was no woman. “You could see where he shaved. It was Hoover,” said Rosenstiel. Joined by Cohn, Hoover stripped down to a tiny garter belt and proceeded to have sex with two young boys. Cohn later joked about the evening. “That was really something, wasn’t it, with Mary Hoover?”

The “two young boys” with whom Hoover allegedly had sex perhaps were provided by Ed “the Skull” Murphy who was a long-time Genovese associate involved in the crime family’s gay bar and boy prostitution rackets in New York City…………….

Once an Eagle

February 25, 2011 Leave a comment

Once An Eagle, a novel by Anton Myrer, was published in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. Nearly forty years later, this classic novel of soldiers and soldiering remains in print, having sold well over three million copies.

It remains a fixture on the Marine Corps Commandant’s Reading List, as well as other military professional reading lists. The novel also spawned, in 1976, an outstanding nine-hour television miniseries of the same name, starring Sam Elliot, Glen Ford, and Darlene Carr.

Once An Eagle is the epic tale of good versus evil. The good is embodied in protagonist Sam Damon, a soldier’s soldier and a consummate professional, noted for his bravery under fire and his dedication to the men who serve under him. Damon’s chief adversary, Courtney Massengale, is evil personified. His dedication is to the advancement of his career, without regard to the devastation it wreaks on his family and the blood shed by those affected by his command decisions.

Once An Eagle is also a remarkable study in leadership. It has become a touchstone for military professionals who aspire to emulate Sam Damon. This New York Times #1 bestseller, published in nineteen languages, is the sweeping story of America’s fighting men serving in World War I, the peacetime army between the world wars, World War II, and the Khotiane a fictional Vietnam War.

A Marine combat veteran himself, Myrer’s battle action scenes rank with the very best. His novel has been compared to Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage and Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front.

Mubarak: I Am an Arab Warrior, Not a Community Organizer

The Corner ^ | 10 February 2011 | Barry RubinPosted on Thursday, February 10, 2011 5:28:44 PM by SE Mom

This is a huge lesson in political culture. It also shows just how bad the media coverage has been. Mubarak is not resigning. He’s managing the “reform” process. He is appointing a committee to study constitutional changes. He will decide when there are elections. He is going to “consider” changing the emergency law.

He basically said: I am an Arab warrior, not a community organizer. That speech should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the Middle East. This is not over yet.

There has been no revolution so far, but the protesters are going to freak out. If Obama has been interpreted as applauding real and major change, either he didn’t know what Mubarak was going to say or he is going to look like a total fool. When Mubarak said he won’t accept outside advice, that was a direct slap at Obama.

Can you imagine the expression on Obama’s face as he watched the speech after being told by his intelligence that Mubarak resigned? After he made a speech about how the youth had forced change? If I had to summarize it, tabloid-style, I’d say: “Mubarak to Obama: Drop Dead!“The regime is not giving in — Mubarak will leave office, perhaps in September, but the regime will fight on.

The speech was the equivalent of Charles Bronson or Clint Eastwood saying: Come and get me!

course, we should not forget that this is a dictator refusing to step down. Mubarak and the army knew that this would inflame the crowd. The army would not have agreed to this unless it was willing to deal with the consequences.

AN OPEN LETTER TO CLINT EASTWOOD….by Dick Gaines

An Open Letter To Clint Eastwood

I see by recent news articles that you are to be involved in a new film regarding the raising of our flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. I have wondered if this is going to be yet another of the usual party line accounts, or if this one will finally be an in-depth full story and truth of that event in our history.

Since it is you involved this time, I expect the latter could be the case, and I think it’s worth a shot to attempt to bring the following information to your attention in hopes that the story of Marine Ray Jacobs, and others, might finally be brought to the attention of the American public in a way that is worthy of both the event and the men themselves.

Jacobs is one of the known remaining survivors, along with Chuck Lindberg, of Lt. Schrier’s 40-man combat patrol up Suribachi that day to raise our colors over the Japanese homeland. I am referring here to the earlier first (so-called) flag raising–not the later raising of a replacement flag that was photographed by Joe Rosenthal (and was also shot by Sgt Bill Genaust on motion-picture film as well)–and which quickly, and incorrectly, became famous as the Iwo Jima flag raising well-known to all. The actual flag raising was photographed earlier that same day by Marine S/Sgt Lou Lowery, and is not nearly so well-known. Even today, nearly sixty years after the battle for Iwo Jima, a number of facts are still in question, and the emphasis of the flag raising itself remains on the replacement flag and not the original flag raised.

Seeking Proof in Near-Death Claims 18 Hospitals to study mystery of near-death experiences

October 27, 2010 Leave a comment

At 18 hospitals in the U.S. and U.K., researchers have suspended pictures, face up, from the ceilings in emergency-care areas. The reason: to test whether patients brought back to life after cardiac arrest can recall seeing the images during an out-of-body experience.

People who have these near-death experiences often describe leaving their bodies and watching themselves being resuscitated from above, but verifying such accounts is difficult.

The images would be visible only to people who had done that.”We’ve added these images as objective markers,” says Sam Parnia, a critical-care physician and lead investigator of the study, which hopes to include 1,500 resuscitated patients. Dr. Parnia declined to say whether any have accurately described the images so far, but says he hopes to report preliminary results next year. The study, coordinated by Southampton University‘s School of Medicine in England, is one of the latest and largest scientific efforts to understand the mystery of near-death experiences. At least 15 million American adults say they have had a near-death experience, according to a 1997 survey—and the number is thought to be rising with increasingly sophisticated resuscitation techniques. In addition to floating above their bodies, people often describe moving down a dark tunnel toward a bright light, feeling intense peace and joy, reviewing life events and seeing long-deceased relatives—only to be told that it’s not time yet and land abruptly back in an ailing body.

The once-taboo topic is getting a lot of talk these days. In the new movie “Hereafter,” directed by Clint Eastwood, a French journalist is haunted by what she experienced while nearly drowning in a tsunami.

Yet the fundamental debate rages on: Are these glimpses of an afterlife, are they hallucinations or are they the random firings of an oxygen-starved brain?
