Everybody knows a Walt Kowalski. He is the grizzled Korean War veteran Clint Eastwood played in the movie Gran Torino. A man who spends his days sitting on the porch, keeping his house and yard immaculate, satisfied to drink his cheap beer while watching his neighborhood and country go to hell around him.
He is an anachronism, a dinosaur — part of the old America where you worked hard, took pride in your work and where you lived, and fought for your country and what it stood for when called upon

‘Quentin Tarantino‘s Oscar-winning Western, Django Unchained, is one of relatively few Hollywood films depicting a black cowboy. In reality there were many, some of whose stories were borrowed for films starring white actors.
(Col Sellin) The PowerPoint rant that got a colonel fired – Army News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq – Army Times
Army Col. Lawrence Sellin was fired two days after his sarcastic rant was published by the United Press International wire service.
Sellin was fired because he didn’t clear his remarks through public affairs and failed to clear “written or oral presentations to the media” through a designated public affairs officer. Here is what he wrote:
KABUL, Afghanistan — Throughout my career I have been known to walk that fine line between good taste and unemployment. I see no reason to change that now.
Consider the following therapeutic.
I have been assigned as a staff officer to a headquarters in Afghanistan for about two months. During that time, I have not done anything productive. Fortunately, little of substance is really done here, but that is a task we do well.
We are part of the operational arm of the International Security Assistance Force commanded by Army Gen. David Petraeus. It is composed of military representatives from all the NATO countries, several of which I cannot pronounce.
Officially, International Joint Command was founded in late 2009 to coordinate operations among all the regional commands in Afghanistan. More likely it was founded to provide some general a three-star command. Starting with a small group of dedicated and intelligent officers, IJC has successfully grown into a stove-piped and bloated organization, top-heavy in rank. Around here, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a colonel.
Blog: Broken Barack… (“Obama made a lot of great points tonight. Unfortunately, most of them were for Romney,”)
William L. Gensert
During last night’s debate, Barack Obama, the greatest man to have ever walked the face of the earth, went down in flames. Mitt Romney destroyed him in the first debate. As a political junkie, I have seen my share of debates; my favorite was Reagan/Carter in 1980, which Reagan won handily.
GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI — An Ottawa County diversity group is claiming that a Grand Haven area man’s political statement — a lawn chair hangingfrom a tree — is racially insensitive and should be taken down.
Leaders of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance have scheduled a “community conversation” public meeting next Thursday at the Grand Haven Community Center to discuss the issue.
The lawn chair is suspended by a rope from a tree along Comstock Street near Peach Plain Elementary School and, according to the homeowner, is simply a take-off on Clint Eastwood‘s much-ballyhooed “empty chair rant” speech at the Republican National Convention where Eastwood was pretending to talk to President Barack Obama.
At least two recent incidents in which empty chairs were hung from trees by rope have critics decrying what they say are racially offensive displays meant to symbolize the “lynching” of President Barack Obama. In Austin, Texas, a homeowner hung an empty folding chair from a tree branch in front of his house and later attached an American flag to it.
The Clint Eastwood on gay marriage episode of Ellen DeGeneres‘ talk-show showed “Dirty Harry” again in the “raw.” The actor-director shared his views on same-sex-marriage and his role with the Libertarian Party. In the wake of the RNC, viewers got an even closer glimpse at the Hollywood legend.
