A Bridge Too Far is one of my favourite war movies. Pretty much the last of the Big Screen Epics, with an All Star Cast, it doesn’t try to do much except simply tell what happened. No romantic sub plots, no political commentary, it just goes all-out to bring us the story. There’s a scene near the beginning, where von Rundstedt and Model are discussing if they need to worry about stopping Patton or Montgomery.
“He’s their best. I’d prefer Montgomery, but Eisenhower isn’t that stupid” says von Rundstedt. The whole Monty/Patton argument in general is frequent, and shows up even in the Hatch forum (See the El Alamein thread).

This essay was originally published in Reassessing the Presidency: The Rise of the Executive State and the Decline of Freedom, edited by John V. Denson, pp. 667–696. An MP3 audio file of this article, read by Dr. Floy Lilley, is available for download.
In a recent survey, people of different nationalities were asked how proud they were to be American, German, French, etc., and whether or not they believed that the world would be a better place if other countries were just like their own. The countries ranking highest in terms of national pride were the United States and Austria. As interesting as it would be to consider the case of Austria, we shall concentrate here on the United States and the question of whether and to what extent the American claim can be justified.
In the following, we will identify three main sources of American national pride, the first two of which are justified sources of pride, while the third actually represents a fateful error. Finally, we will look at how this error might be repaired.
The Hitler Myth

Historic attachments to heroic leadership combined with a mastery of propaganda techniques to mesmerise Germany into acceptance of the charismatic authority offered by the Nazi ‘Fuhrer’.
For almost a decade after 1933, Hitler enjoyed a remarkable degree of popularity among the great majority of the German people. However dramatic and spectacular his political career, concentration on Hitler’s character and personality – in some respects bizarre, in others downright mediocre and wholly unpleasant – can nevertheless do little to explain the magnetism of his popular appeal. Nor can his extraordinary impact on the German people in these years be accounted for satisfactorily by seeing in Hitler’s personal Weltanschauung (notably in his obsessions with the ‘Jewish Question‘ and with Lebensraum) a mirror image of the motivation of Nazism‘s mass following. Recent research has done much to qualify such assumptions, suggesting too that even deep into the period of the dictatorship itself Hitler’s own ideological fixations had more of a symbolic than concrete meaning for most Nazi supporters.

First, a history lesson: Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. Hitler then moved quickly to marginalize and then dispense entirely with the German Legislature, the Reichstag, and to effectively eliminate all political parties other than the National Socialist (Nazi) Party.
The last step in Hitler’s quest for total, dictatorial power was the purging of the German military of any factions that were in any way autonomous and not 100% loyal to him, specifically the SA (Sturmabteilung, which means Storm Detachment).
The SA was run by Ernst Rohm, who, like most of the founding and high-level members of the Nazi Party and eventually the Third Reich, was a homosexual ephebophile (preferring teenaged boys). In fact, Rohm was a militant and vocal homosexual in the spirit of the ancient Greeks and musloids who believed that women were sub-human and that truly masculine men only had sex with other men and boys.

…..Apparently, Americans are the first people in history who are so idealistic, or so thoroughly brainwashed, that they prefer to pay for wars and bail out banks than to make their mortgage payments and help their children with student loan debt.
The federal court in Germany has ruled that Germans are to be just as idealistic as Americans. The federal court has produced a ruling that it is OK for the EU to require German citizens to provide $190 billion to pay off the private banks who lent too much money to Greece.
A d v e r t i s e m e n t
In exchange for paying off the banks for Greece, the Greek people are to be driven into poverty and hopelessness. Pensions are cut, taxes are raised, employment is cut, social services are curtailed, prices of utilities are raised. The Greek people are to be destroyed in order that the private European banks do not lose money on their bad loans.
Prelude to World War I by Ralph Raico
This article is excerpted from chapter 1 of Great Wars and Great Leaders: A Libertarian Rebuttal (2010).
This chapter is a much expanded version of an essay that originally appeared in The Costs of War: America’s Pyrrhic Victories (2001).
With the World War mankind got into a crisis with which nothing that happened before in history can be compared…. In the world crisis whose beginning we are experiencing, all peoples of the world are involved…. War has become more fearful because it is waged with all the means of the highly developed technique that the free economy has created…. Never was the individual more tyrannized than since the outbreak of the World War and especially of the world revolution. One cannot escape the police and administrative technique of the present day.

Gunny G: Marines History and Traditions: German Myth 13: Teufelshunde – Devil Dogs
…..A Bavarian Teufelshunde Legend?
Most German Web references to “Teufelshunde” are for computer games with a kind of hellhound beast called a Teufelshund in German, but it seems to be closer to Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Greek mythology who guarded the gates to Hades. I also found a German rockgroup called “Teufelshunde” and at least one lyric reference to a Teufelshund that ends with these lines: “Drum Mensch tu’ recht und sei nicht schlecht; sonst holt der Teufelshund Dich in den Hllenschlund. (“So do right and don’t be bad; otherwise the Devil Dog will drag you into the jaws of hell.”) And the poem seems to be related to Bavaria’s Chiemgau region around Bavaria’s Chiemsee. Another Sage is called “Der Teufelshund in der Sandwiese.” But did the Devil Dogs legend actually came about because German soldiers compared the Marines to “wild mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore”?

This is the censored Patton. Even I censor Patton as his words are now considered illegal, criminal acts in Germany, Canada, even America. They are true just the same.

Note the film is narrated by Reagan who personally took credit for liberating Auschwitz though Reagan did not serve in World War II. Patton would have used Reagan for pistol practice.

MEP Nigel Farage gave a rousing speech in the European Parliament yesterday during which he warned that the actions of the EU were setting the stage for the re-emergence of National Socialism and that the continent faced the prospect of mass civil unrest.
Comparing the eurozone crisis to the failure of Communism, Farage said the EU was a titanic which has hit an iceberg.
“It is a European Union of economic failure, of mass unemployment, of low growth; but worst of all it’s an EU with the economic prison of the Euro. This now poses huge dangers to the continent,” he stated.

War Comes to America – Psycho Politics
As a well known, controversial, publisher and broadcaster I have been demonized, labeled, libeled and slandered by a wide range of opposition. From the days of Rush Limbaugh mocking us as “Black Helicopter Types” and “Militia” to today’s attacks on activists in the Tea Parties, Ron Paul, his supporters and Veterans, this is merely history repeating itself. These attacks were once limited to high profile and loud activists, writers and publishers like Bill Cooper, John Kaminski and myself, today they are going after our readers, listeners or fans. Remember being considered to be a terrorist if you had a Constitution on your dash or a Ron Paul Sticker on your bumper? But I was labeled a “Conspiracy Theorist” when I tried to warn you of what was to come based on suppressed history.
I have always told you that you should consider me the canary in the coal mine. It is no theory that many of the things that I warned about 15 years ago are occurring right now in our country. It is not like it hasn’t happened before. John Kaminski sent me this a few minutes ago.
John will be on my show tomorrow. I urge you to tune in. I want you to do more than just listen. Another war is planned and imminent! We must prepare on the home front without relying on a government that is behind and profiting from millions of deaths and misery for millions.
“Just before World War I, Woodrow Wilson was the peace candidate, but later lit the fuse that killed 25 million people. Franklin Roosevelt said he’d keep us out of war just before he was elected to a third term, and history has long ago revealed how he engineered Pearl Harbor to get us into WW II, which killed 57 million.
Just before World War I, the sentiment in America was decidedly pro-German, and more the half of all the immigrants coming to this developing land WERE German. Nobody wanted to get involved in a European war. But the media, owned by the same people who were making the weapons, convinced us, apparently, by suddenly and savagely telling hair-raising false stories about the Germans.

In World War II’s final moments in Europe, Associated Press correspondent Edward Kennedy gave his news agency perhaps the biggest scoop in its history. He reported, a full day ahead of the competition, that the Germans had surrendered unconditionally at a former schoolhouse in Reims, France.
For this, he was publicly rebuked by the AP, and then quietly fired.

25 Signs That The Nazification Of America Is Almost Complete
The United States of America is becoming more like Nazi Germany every single day. In fact, the Nazification of America is almost complete.
The parallels between Nazi Germany and the United States of today are going to absolutely shock many of you. Most Americans simply have never learned what life was really like back in Nazi Germany.
Under Adolf Hitler, Germany was a Big Brother totalitarian police state that ruthlessly repressed freedom and individual liberty. Under Adolf Hitler, Germany adopted socialism, dramatically increased government spending and raised taxes to astronomical levels. Under Adolf Hitler, abortion became legal in Germany, the government took over health care and Christianity was pushed out of the public schools and out of public life.

L: Doug, a lot of readers have been asking for guidance on how to know when it’s time to exit center stage and hunker down in some safe place. Few people want to hide from the world in a cabin in the woods while life goes on in the mainstream, but nobody wants to get caught once the gates clang shut on the police state the US is becoming. How do you know when it’s time to go?
Doug: Well, the first thing to keep in mind is that it’s better to be a year too early than a minute too late. David Galland recently read They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45, by Milton Mayer. He quoted a passage in his column of last Friday. It goes a long way in explaining why Americans appear to be such whipped dogs today. They’re no different from the Germans of recent memory. For those who missed it, let me quote it:

Five thousand Irish soldiers who swapped uniforms to fight for the British against Hitler went on to suffer years of persecution.
One of them, 92-year-old Phil Farrington, took part in the D-Day landings and helped liberate the German death camp at Bergen-Belsen – but he wears his medals in secret.
Even to this day, he has nightmares that he will be arrested by the authorities and imprisoned for his wartime service.
“They would come and get me, yes they would,” he said in a frail voice at his home in the docks area of Dublin.
And his 25-year-old grandson, Patrick, confirmed: “I see the fear in him even today, even after 65 years.”
Mr Farrington’s fears are not groundless.
Soldiers Against War by John V. Denson
The Christmas Truce, which occurred primarily between the British and German soldiers along the Western Front in December 1914, is an event the official histories of the “Great War” leave out, and the Orwellian historians hide from the public. Stanley Weintraub has broken through this barrier of silence and written a moving account of this significant event by compiling letters sent home from the front, as well as diaries of the soldiers involved. His book is entitled Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce. The book contains many pictures of the actual events showing the opposing forces mixing and celebrating together that first Christmas of the war. This remarkable story begins to unfold, according to Weintraub, on the morning of December 19, 1914:

Jefferies strategist David Zervos is back again with new recommendations about how the U.S. could step in and save the global economy.
This week: threaten complete disaster if EU leaders don’t act right away.
Akin to what he said about the matter last week: The game in Europe is as we have described many times before – the Germans want budgetary control throughout all of Europe and the rest of EMU wants Eurobonds. Its a game a chicken with the entire global financial system on the line. The US should not allow itself to become a casualty in this Euro chicken game.
Zervos previously proposed that the Federal Reserve buy massive amounts of EU sovereign bonds, but acknowledged today that it engendered a “bailout culture” that Americans won’t be too happy about. Now he says there’s actually another way:

(Nov. 24, 2011) — It was called “Unlimited War” and the goal was “Unconditional Surrender” at any cost. It was designed to bring our boys home from Europe and the Pacific A.S.A.P. Everyone down the food chain was sick and tired of the “The Department of War is sorry to inform you that _____ was killed in action” forms that they had to send with a little note telling the mother or wife what a great guy he was and at least he died quickly. But he often didn’t die quickly. Sometimes a best buddy couldn’t take it anymore and ended it all.

Due Process With a Bullet
Due Process With a Bullet:
A GI in the hills of France takes aim through a rifle scope at a German soldier. Snow cakes the ground and a few bare trees cling to the ground like bony fingers. At the last moment, the German soldier sees his attacker. “Wait,” he cries out in a passable accent, “Ich bin an American citizen.”
The scenario isn’t a particularly implausible one. Any number of Germans did leave to fight on behalf of their country in the first and second world wars. And there was no question of due process on the battlefield. Members of enemy forces who fought against the United States were killed and any precedent set in that regard was set long ago.
Critics of drone attacks call them “assassinations”, but there is no difference whatsoever between a soldier sighting an enemy officer through a computer monitor or a rifle scope. There is also no legal distinction between firing a bullet or dropping a bomb or launching a missile. The nature of the projectile or delivery mechanism matters in the tactical and strategic sense, it doesn’t matter in any other way. War is war and dead is dead.
If knowing the identity of your target ahead of time is assassination…………….

DO AMERICANS SEE THE DANGERS OF AN OVERREACHING GOVERNMENT?
by Ron Ewart, ©2011
(Jul. 17, 2011) —“The essence of liberty is the freedom of thought without limits and the freedom of action and movement with limits, such that one person’s actions and movements do not interfere with the freedom of thought and actions of another.” — Ron Ewart
Hitler could not have terrorized the world that resulted in the deaths of millions of people without the willing participation and adoration of the German people. A president in America cannot become president without the vote of the majority of the people. A hero will not be recognized as a hero without a large number of people acknowledging his acts of heroism. It is the people who grant power and status to others, or those that lead them.
The other night we watched the 1962 black and white movie “Hitler,” with Richard Basehart playing the part. We were struck by the millions of Germans who hung on his every word and adored his persona even though his persona was deeply flawed. It got us to thinking about the qualities of a leader that would cause the people to throw away their good sense to follow one man, anywhere, even into oblivion. Lemmings come to mind, even though the story about lemmings being herded over a cliff is apparently a myth.
The German people, en masse, looked the other way when Hitler assumed the power of a dictator in 1933. In fact they cheered him. They shrugged when he instituted his Brown Shirts. They said nothing when their children were trotted off to propaganda schools in the form of Hitler’s youth. They cheered again and participated when Hitler chose the Jews to persecute and execute ….. by the millions. Many Germans participated with the Nazi Storm Troopers during “the Night of Broken Glass“ in November of 1938. The Germans called that night “Kristallnacht.”
And the Germans looked the other way when Hitler started violating the Versailles Treaty and building up his army and navy. They looked the other way when he annexed Austria and invaded Czechoslovakia, Poland, France and Russia and tried to obliterate London with buzz bombs and rockets in his diabolical quest to conquer the world. They looked the other way, that is, until Hell descended upon them in the humiliating defeat of the 2nd World War, at the hands of the determined allies.

German Myth 13: Teufelshunde – Devil Dogs
Did German soldiers give the U.S. Marines the nickname “Teufelshunde”?
Do the Marines Have It Right?
No one can question the bravery and valor of the U.S. Marines. But is the legend about their “Devil Dogs” nickname based on fact? Every Leatherneck is indocrinated with the tale of how Marines came to be called “Devil Dogs.” If you visit Marine recruiting sites on the Web you’ll find this World War I legend also used as a tool to encourage young people to join the Marine Corps today. There’s even an old recruiting poster (see photo) that was created by artist Charles B. Falls around 1918. Emblazoned with the words “Teufel Hunden, German Nickname for U.S. Marines – Devil Dog Recruiting Station,” the poster is one of the earliest known references to the legend, said to have come about as the result of fierce fighting in 1918 by the Marines in France’s Belleau Wood (Bois Belleau in French, “woods of beautful water”). But the poster commits the same error that almost all versions of the legend do: it gets the German wrong.
The first thing any good student of German should notice about the poster is that the German word for “Devil Dogs” is misspelled. In German the term would not be two words, but one. The plural of Hund is Hunde, not “Hunden.” So the poster and any Marine references to the German nickname should read Teufelshundeone word with a connecting s. Most of the references I have found on the Web have the German incorrect in one way or another. Even the Marine Corps’ own Parris Island Museum has it wrong. Since the museum’s founding in 1975, the sign on display there has read “Teuelhunden” rather than the correct “Teufelshunde.”
