I mentioned the other day that the Justice Department‘s secretive snooping on AP reporters was not just a personal violation of privacy, but in fact a threat to their ability to do their jobs and a threat to everyone’s ability to report on the Obama administration.

Gary Pruitt, AP’s CEO confirmed on CBS Face the Nation Sunday that in fact, his organization is already finding government sources are more reluctant to talk to them now because of what happened.

Yesterday, administration was involved in a cover-up. “If this was some effort on our part to try to downplay what had happened or tamp it down, that would be a pretty odd thing that three days later we end up putting out all the information,” Obama said.

“Who executes some sort of cover-up or effort to tamp things down for three days? So the whole thing defies logic.” Equally willing to defy logic was Obama’s MSNBC # Chris Matthews, who has been more than eager to carry water for the Obama administration. Indeed, Matthews’ coverage of the unrelenting Benghazi scandal has distinguished itself as being particularly loathsome.

Last Thursday, Matthews was in fine form. After acknowledging that Greg Hicks, former deputy chief of mission in Libya, had testified before the House that he had spoken with Hillary Clinton on the night of the attack and that Clinton’s Chief of Staff tried to intimidate him into silence, Matthews downplayed the egregiousness of the former secretary of State’s scandalous behavior.

I think the current controversy over immigration reform points to a larger issue in America today, which is that Americans are essentially split on the very idea of what America is and should be.

It used to be that Americans mostly agreed that in order to attain citizenship, immigrants had to not only come to this country legally but also demonstrate, after training and study in the American system, that they believed in the unique United States Constitution and embraced what it means to be an American.

Though that still occurs in the naturalization process, we seem to have abandoned it altogether in connection with the immigration debate.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings and the renewed push for “gun safety” (the current politically correct term) the rumor was all too believable. But was it true?

 

At the time the panic started, the answer was “no.” The U.N. had been working on an anti-gun treaty for years but had never actually produced a result. Last fall, Obama gave his support to the next step of the process. That was enough to set the rumor mill churning.

 

But as of April 2, 2013, the long-rumored treaty finally exists. All Second Amendment supporters should be aware of it — but need not panic. It’s dangerous of course. The Obama administration and long-time anti-gunners in the Senate would love to use it to curtail firearms. But whether this treaty will ever affect U.S. gun owners is up to us.

Michigan farmer Vern Verduin has won the right to display signs critical of Pres. Obama – on Verduin’s own truck and property – after Gaines Township officials took him to court in an effort to force him to remove them.

In response to First Amendment arguments raised by The Rutherford Institute, a state district court has dismissed charges against the Michigan cattle farmer who was cited and fined for displaying political banners critical of the Obama administration on a farming truck parked on his private 40-acre lot.

The National Rifle Association has obtained a Department of Justice memo calling for national gun registration and confiscation. The nine page “cursory summary” on current gun control initiatives was not officially released by the Obama administration.

 

The DOJ memo (downloadable here as a PDF) states the administration “believes that a gun ban will not work without mandatory gun confiscation,” according to the NRA, and thinks universal background checks “won’t work without requiring national gun registration.”

 

 

 

Obama has yet to publicly support national registration or firearms confiscation, although the memo reveals his administration is moving in that direction.

Not at all. Obama and his gaggle of leftists were actually floating the idea of nationalizing 401Ks and IRAs in 2010—and only were stopped in their tracks when they lost the House in the 2010 midterms.

 

 

Under the auspices of a “bailout” for Big Labor’s bankrupt pensions—the same Big Labor that has donated half a billion dollars to Obama’s endless campaign—Democrats were planning on confiscating Americans’ retirement accounts and funneling the money to their Big Labor backers.

 

The cover was the creation of what they called a Guaranteed Retirement Account—GRA—another government takeover that dwarves ObamaCare’s takeover of the healthcare industry.

 

Is this something a radicalized Obama administration floated, then rejected, in 2010?

 

Not at all. Obama’s just doing it, as always, via a Trojan Horse. Called “Automatic IRAs,” Obama’s budget proposals for 2013 include a preliminary government takeover of Americans’ retirement accounts by mandating employers contribute a certain amount to their employees’ retirement.

 

Of course, this employer mandate sounds oddly similar to ObamaCare’s mandate to buy health insurance, which is nothing more than a Trojan Horse for single-payer—that is, socialized healthcare.

Violence along the southern border has gotten so out of control that both Mexican and American journalists have stopped reporting it out of fear that drug cartels will retaliate against them and their families.

We certainly can’t expect the truth from the government. Remember that the nation’s Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, insists that the region is “as secure as it has ever been.” This delusional assessment has been repeated by Napolitano over and over again in a seemingly desperate effort to make people believe it.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division of DHS released nearly 2,400 criminal illegal aliens in February – including over 300 in a single county in Arizona. And the rationale given was that these were “necessary cuts” because of “looming” sequestration – a claim DHS Chief Napolitano made that we now know to be false. Napolitano lied when she insisted only “hundreds” were released, after the AP reported “over 2,000″ were set loose.

 

We also found out that DHS did not need to make these cuts to alien detention, given that the department is scheduled to have $8 billion in “surplus funds” available to it at the end of the fiscal year. And also that – while slashing funds for housing criminal aliens – DHS spent lavish amounts at the same time for brand new uniforms for TSA agents.

The little secret of sequestration is that the Obama administration could fix much of the problem pretty quickly. But it doesn’t want to.

 

Congress tells executive branch agencies how much money they can spend and how they should spend it. Sometimes the instructions are broad, and sometimes they are quite detailed. Cabinet secretaries and lower-downs are bound to work within those congressional directives.

 

But if Cabinet officers want to spend the money differently, there is a long-established process for doing so: They ask Congress for permission. It happens all the time, with lawmakers routinely giving the executive branch the OK to spend money in different ways than originally planned.

 

That could be happening now. All those Obama administration officials complaining about across-the-board cuts dictated by sequestration could come up with plans to make the same amount of cuts in ways that would create fewer problems for federal workers and services. Then they could ask Congress for permission to do so. Lawmakers would say yes, and things would be fine.

A follow up to this story, in which it was reported that “waves” of illegal immigrants were being released from jail buoyed by the excuse of budget cuts via the sequestration.

 

After that news came to light, an official from the Department of Homeland Security ‘resigned’, and the White House started claiming that it wasn’t waves of criminals being released, but rather “a few hundred”.
