To harness the power of social networking while protecting personal information, some people use fake information in their profiles. There are lots of reasons people provide fake info. Everything from using a fake birthday or city, to using a fake profile picture or name are used by people who fear stalkers, by Egyptian revolutionaries, and by average people to protect their privacy. Only the most dedicated snoops can glean good information from a false trail.

I would like to enlist the knowledge of my fellow freepers. My local rag the Journal News who doesn’t even allow excerpts to be posted has just changed their comments section to only allow Facebook postings. They give some lame excuse about some people are upset at the postings and it is not fair it is anonymous. Since you have to sign up with a valid e-mail address they are not really anonymous. Besides the attempt to stifle dissent through intimidation why would they do this? Is there something I am missing? Note this paper published the names and addresses of all the registered gun owners in the area.

FaceBook keeps suggesting I ‘friend’ someone whose only connection to me is that I have emailed him a couple times. How else would they know I even know this individual.

Like any technology, the Internet is a double-edged sword, but is the world wide web literally re-wiring our brains, dumbing us down by destroying our ability to think analytically and infantilizing our minds in the process?

Are we becoming a world of wireheads as the constant onslaught of new information reduces our attention span to nothing – eviscerating our ability to concentrate?

Some neuroscientists say the Internet is re-moulding brains to rely on associative thinking – which leaves us incapable of reading or writing at length.

But Oxford University’s Susan Greenfield goes further – warning that the likes of Facebook and Twitter are giving people what amounts to a lobotomy of empathy.

“We know how small babies need constant reassurance that they exist,” she told the UK’s Daily Mail. “My fear is that these technologies are infantilizing the brain into the state of small children who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights; who have a small attention span and who live for the moment.” Greenfield even fears that real conversation may give way to sanitized screen dialogues.

There are Facebook and Twitter obsessives who can barely visit the bathroom without posting a status update about it. To these people, privacy, individualism and merely the nagging voice of their own conscience are terrifying prospects. They constantly need to fill their environment with sound and fury, signifying nothing. To them, silence is torture – considered thought and peace of mind is anathema.

Civility is making the headlines lately, but if you dig a bit deeper, barbarism is the real story.To wit: Last month, MSNBC.com carried this story from Reno, NV: “Six girls arrested for Facebook ‘Attack a Teacher Day’ invite.”

One middle school girl was arrested for inviting 100 fellow middle schoolers on the social networking site to participate in something she called “attack a teacher day,” while five other girls were arrested for responding to the invitation with threats against specific teachers.<—snip—>

I hate to be the one to burst our national bubble about the potential for greater civility, but we’re rearing a generation that seems to have no concept that there are things you just don’t do or say.

Because unless you zealously guard the ideological purity of your Facebook friendlist, limiting it only to other people who also only limit to conservatives, you are bound to log on one day and find some spectacularly annoying and/or downright asinine comment posted to which you must respond. And I mean you MUST respond. (See #10, below.)

Now this can be bruising, because text-based arguments get nastier a whole lot quicker, in my experience, than face-to-face interactions. Most people are a whole lot more polite in person than when protected by the relative anonymity of their computer screen, and this goes double for Leftists. What’s more, it is often the friends of your friends to whom you will find yourself responding, and they may well be people you don’t know and will never meet, which can shove the nasty meter into overdrive. But armed with these tips, you can have a rewarding exchange, pound Leftism, and maintain your dignity:

Facebook apps providing information to advertisers: WSJ

WASHINGTON — Many popular applications on Facebook are violating the social network’s rules and transmitting identifying information about users to advertising and Internet tracking companies, The Wall Street Journal reported.The newspaper said it conducted an investigation and found that the issue affects tens of millions of Facebook application users, including people who set their profiles to be completely private.

It said the practice breaks Facebook’s rules and renews questions about its ability to keep secure identifiable information about the activities of its members.The Journal said applications were providing access to Facebook members’ names and, in some cases, their friends’ names, to companies that build detailed databases on people in order to track them online.

FACEBOOK PROBLEM Vanity

Maybe some of you high tech types can help me here. I have a Facebook account. I had one for several months, but all of a sudden, Facebook now requires me to verify my account before I can post anything. The only ways offered are to link the account to a mobile phone or to provide Facebook with a valid credit card.

Well, I don’t have a mobile phone and I don’t get why I would want to give Facebook a credit card number which it could use fraudulently. There should not be any charges for using Facebook.There is a tech support/help page, which provides me with little if any useable information on the subject. Nowhere is there a tech support telephone number I can call.So if any of you Facebook subscribers/techies can help — I would appreciate it. Thank you!
