Desperate to empty the Guantanamo Bay prison by the end of his term, Obama quietly is giving “get out of jail free” cards for the flimsiest of excuses. One al Qaeda suspect captured in Afghanistan is considered reformed because he took up yoga and read a biography of the Dalai Lama.

For Barack Obama speeches are not just motivational instruments or representations of a desired state of affairs, but feats of political transubstantiation, where, if he utters them, words become reality. It is a behavior not dissimilar to Adolf Hitler maneuvering imaginary German divisions from his Berlin bunker while Russian troops rampage throughout the city above him.

Delusional is the only term that I can muster to describe the chasm that exists between the words Obama uses and the differing reality into which they are dispensed. In politics and foreign policy, words have power if they are truthful and followed by corresponding actions.

When they lack authenticity, however, words degenerate into the coarse tools of a con artist, receptive only to the cynical or the equally delusional. It is as if Obama is following the George Burns axiom, the key to success is sincerity, if you can fake that, then you’ve got it made.

Until now, Islamist rule has implied violence and dictatorship; can it evolve into something decent?

Put differently: if the brutality of Ruhollah Khomeini and Osama bin Laden marked them as yesterday’s men, and the autocracy of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Mohamed Morsi make them today’s men; can tomorrow’s Islamists – Muslims seeking a consistent and global application of Islamic law under the rule of a caliph – become democratic and humane?

I’ve wanted to make this piece for a couple of years now. The situation in Ukraine has finally put me over the edge.

On August 6, 2011, a military helicopter—Extortion 17, carrying thirty-eight men, including seventeen of the elite SEAL Team 6—was shot down over Taliban-controlled territory in eastern Afghanistan. It was the worst loss of life in a single day suffered since the Afghanistan war began.

Per a 1300-page military report, it was simply the result of a “lucky shot” by Taliban soldiers perched on top of a building.
