At one time, it was popular for people to reload their own ammunition. In fact, at one time in American History, it was necessary.

It seems like this might be a hot topic for some people so that they can get enough ammunition for target practice, etc.

Last Christmas many Dick’s customers were sent one mean lump of coal in the form of a gift certificate. All customers who pre-ordered a Troy Carbine from Dick’s for their Black Friday special had their orders cancelled and their money returned.

Following the Newtown shooting spree, Dick’s Sporting Goods changed their policy and stopped selling AR-pattern and other semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles, even the guns they had already sold.

There are dozens of articles hyping government purchases of ammunition over the last nine months. After spending weeks researching this topic, this is a collection of commonly held myths that are based more on panic than fact.

With the recent release of a letter from the Department of Homeland Security to Senator Coburn, the numbers we calculated independently seem to corroborate the narrative coming from DHS. The concerns surrounding DHS stockpiling ammunition are nothing but more fear-mongering and largely unwarranted. For once, here are the facts to set the record straight:

MYTH: DHS purchased 750 million rounds of several different types of ammunition in August 2012.

FACT: The DHS contract never stated 750 million rounds at any time. It is a five year contract with a maximum purchase of 70 million rounds over the life of the contract. Military Times recently addressed this issue as well.

NEWTOWN, Conn –(Ammoland.com)- The latest Internet rumor has George Soros owning “most of the ammunition manufacturing companies and many arms manufacturers as well.”

It goes on to suggest that Soros and his few remaining competitors are selling new production only to the government, while the civilian market has been relegated to a fast-disappearing stock of old ammunition.

If you’re like me, you check the ammunition shelves in every retailer you visit, and we all have felt the sinking feeling of seeing nothing but empty shelves. The trend is especially acute at the “Big Box” stores where speculators check every day to see if new shipments have arrived overnight.

The gaps in the current ammunition supply are frustrating — but they are not a conspiracy.

A staple of American self-esteem is that we Yanks are brave, free, independent, self-reliant, ruggedly individual, and disinclined to accept abuse from anyone. This was largely true in, say, 1930. People lived, a great many of them, on farms where they planted their own crops, built their own barns, repaired their own trucks, and protected their own property. They were literate but not educated, knew little of the world beyond the local, but in their homes and fields they were supreme.

If they wanted to swim buck nekkid in the creek, they swam buck nekkid. If whistle pigs were eating the corn, the family teenager would get his rifle and solve the problem. Government left them alone.

Skeet [clay disks of bright colors] are thrown by a machine from two towers erected to the right and left of the shooter. (There are other set ups like ones used for “sporting clays” but that isn’t represented in the White House photo release.) Usually, the skeet is thrown about ten or more feet above the ground.

Delivered from behind a freshly charged and precisely aimed M-1 Garand to a trespassing Asian gang member rolling in Walt’s begonias’ one night…..it definitely got the point across.

As Walt would say later to three other wayward “utes” picking on a young girl as he calmly leveled his M1911 at them with a sneer…..”Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn’t have f#$ked with? That’s me.”

Such men really exist….we have all met them….hell there might even be a few among us that could be them. You never know……eh?

For some reason of late, my thoughts turned to an April morning in Massachusetts circa 1775….in various reading, I turned up another dangerous old man in American history that bested my previous favorite who was John Burns of Gettysburg fame.

WHY GOOD PEOPLE NEED SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARMS AND “HIGH CAPACITY” MAGAZINES … Part I

December 31, 2012 4 comments

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably had a conversation with someone in the last few days who asked, “Why do ordinary law-abiding people need those semiautomatic firearms with magazines that can hold more than ten cartridges?” There are lots of sound answers.

sgtstryker

sgtstryker (Photo credit: GunnyG1345)

For one thing, defensive firearms are meant to be “equalizers,” force multipliers that can allow one good person to defend against multiple evil people. To allow one good person to defend against a single evil person so much stronger and/or bigger and/or more violent than he or she, that the attacker’s potentially lethal assault can be stopped. History shows that it often takes many gunshots to stop even a single determined aggressor. Most police officers have seen the famous autopsy photo in the cops-only text book “Street Survival” of the armed robber who soaked up 33 police 9mm bullets before he stopped trying to kill the officers.

Consider Lance Thomas, the Los Angeles area watch shop owner who was in many shootouts with multiple gang bangers who tried to rob and murder him.

RPREVOLU

RPREVOLU (Photo credit: GunnyG1345)

He shot several of them, and discovered that it took so many hits to stop them that he placed multiple loaded handguns every few feet along his workbench. That’s not possible in a home, or when lawfully carrying concealed on the street: a semiautomatic pistol with a substantial cartridge capacity makes much more sense for that defensive application.

What is going on in the high-dollar world of automotive design? Since when did cars have to resemble snarling things that want to desecrate graves?

Not just headlights have taken on a fiendish aspect. The grills, when seen as mouths, underscore the malevolence. Many tail-lights reflect the trend as well, lighting up with reptilian slits reminiscent of the rape scene in Rosemary’s Baby. Quite a few hatchbacks sport rear-enders that resemble devils’ horns.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

GyGRet

GyGRet (Photo credit: GunnyG1345)

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The 5 Best Bourbon Beers – Yahoo! Voices – voices.yahoo.com

October 4, 2012 Leave a comment

One of the side benefits of the rising interest in premium bourbon is the invention of the bourbon barrel-aged beer. The idea is simple.

You take a barrel previously used for aging bourbon, fill it up with beer, and let it sit for a while, soaking up the bourbon flavors left as a residue in the wood. Thick, complex, sweet, and tasty, bourbon beers make for great drinking as the weather turns colder: say October to March, but especially over the winter months. Also, trying these ales out is a must for any lover of bourbon.

Aging other forms of alcohol in bourbon barrels is becoming increasingly popular with distillers, but compared to premium scotch or port, bourbon beer is inexpensive and readily available. The following list represents the five best bourbon ales around.

1. The District Chophouse’s Bourbon Stout

This was the first bourbon beer I ever tasted, years before I saw the stuff bottled and on shelves. Aged for six weeks in barrels procured from Old Grandad, it combines the best elements of a craft stout with sweet vanilla.

“Why are they keeping all this data?” says Mr. Katz-Lacabe, who obtained the photos of his car through a public-records request. “I’ve done nothing wrong.”

Until recently it was far too expensive for police to track the locations of innocent people such as Mr. Katz-Lacabe. But as surveillance technologies decline in cost and grow in sophistication, police are rapidly adopting them. Private companies are joining, too. At least two start-up companies, both founded by “repo men”—specialists in repossessing cars or property from deadbeats—are currently deploying camera-equipped cars nationwide to photograph people’s license plates, hoping to profit from the data they collect.

The rise of license-plate tracking is a case study in how storing and studying people’s everyday activities, even the seemingly mundane, has become the default rather than the exception. Cellphone-location data, online searches, credit-card purchases, social-network comments and more are gathered, mixed-and-matched, and stored in vast databases.

, and fast cars, an icon of modern American culture. That the white working class American male is stereotypically referred to as “Joe Six-pack” is but one example of the dominance of beer as lower and middle- class America’s preferred alcoholic beverage. The temperature inside your car can get insanely hot on sunny days, regardless of the temperature outside. When you get to your car and it’s boiling hot, what’s the first thing you do? You lower the windows and blast the air conditioner, right?

A convenient feature that’s been around for years, but remains unknown to many car owners, is the ability to lower the windows with the key remote. This allows you to begin cooling your car without having to get in first. Unless the car dealershiptold you about this trick or you happen to read manuals for fun, you may have been unaware of this ages-old trick.

First Long-distance Auto Trip – August 5, 1888 – a wonderful story

In 1886, Dr Carl Benz invented the automobile in Mannheim (Reich Patent No. 37435) – but nobody wanted to buy it.

But when Bertha Benz, his wife, went with her 13- and 15-year-old sons on a long-distance trip in 1888 from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back – without her husband’s knowledge – to prove that the horseless coach was absolutely suitable for daily use, it became a huge success with almost a billion drivers worldwide today!
