It’s getting to be embarrassing to be a conservative

These days it’s getting increasingly embarrassing to publicly identify oneself as a conservative. It was bad enough when George Bush 43, the K Street Gang, and the neo-cons were running up spending, fighting an unnecessary war of choice in Iraq, incurring massive deficits, expanding entitlements, and all the rest of the nonsense I cataloged over the years in posts like Bush 43 has been a disaster for conservatives.
These days, however, the most prominent so-called conservatives are increasingly fit only to be cast for the next Dumb and Dumber sequel. They’re dumb and crazy.Conservative pundit David Kilnghoffer has a great op-ed in today’s LA Times that nicely captures what I’m on about:Once, the iconic figures on the political right were urbane visionaries and builders of institutions — like William F. Buckley Jr., Irving Kristol and Father Richard John Neuhaus, all dead now. Today, far more representative is potty-mouthed Internet entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart, whose news and opinion website, Breitbart.com, is read by millions. In his most recent triumph, Breitbart got a U.S. Department of Agriculture official pushed out of her job after he released a deceptively edited video clip of her supposedly endorsing racism against white people. What has become of conservatism? … With its descent to baiting blacks, Mexicans and Muslims, its accommodation of conspiracy theories and an increasing nastiness and vulgarity, the conservative movement has undergone a shift toward demagoguery and hucksterism. Once the talk was of “neocons” versus “paleocons.” Now we observe the rule of the crazy-cons. …Conservatism wasn’t just a policy agenda, a set of partisan gripes or a football team seeking victory on the electoral field. Above all, it was a satisfying, sophisticated critique of modern, materialist culture, pointing a way out and up from liberalism.Let’s tick off ten things that make this conservative embarrassed by the modern conservative movement:

Here is video of Sen. Jim DeMint during a Senate Floor speech against the nomination of Elena Kagan, where he he hammered Nancy Pelosi for her willful disregard of the her oath of office to the U.S. Constitution. DeMint cited Pelosi’s answer when asked where the U.S. Constitution gives her the right to mandate that people purchase Health Insurance. She responded, “You’ve got to be kidding.”DeMint said Pelosi does not see the Constitution as the document that limits what Government can do to the people.
Instead, she and Obama have created a “Yes We Can Congress” that does what it pleases, without any regard to what the Constitution says.Excerpt Read more at freedomslighthouse.net …

ABOUT THE WIND AND THE LION
By R.W. Gaines Gny Sgt USMC Ret.
November 21, 2004
I recently again viewed the film The Wind And The Lion, 1975, Sean Connery, Candice Bergen, and I noticed that although the story was set in the year 1904, the Marine Corps battle color shown was the one w/the scarlet background, not the battle color w/the blue background as would be correct for that time.
As you all know, the background color for the USMC battle color was changed from blue to scarlet in 1925, although it did not become completely effective till 1939. Also noticed the same error in another film, Shores Of Tripoli John Payne, Randolph Scott. in this case, the blue battle color vice the scarlet was shown on the occasion of the beginning of WW II and Pearl Harbor.
Decided to check into the events of the The Wind and The Lion plot to see whether or not the story line of this film had any basis in fact, and perhaps discover what else they had gotten wrong…
Here’s what I found.

Angle: Democrats want to ‘make government our God’LOS ANGELES AP – Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle sees her campaign as a battle to stop Democrats in Washington who want to expand entitlement programs and “make government our God.”
In an interview with a Christian radio network, Angle describes her effort to oust Majority Leader Harry Reid as a religious calling in “a war of ideology, it’s a war of thoughts and of faith.”Reid, President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have pushed “entitlement programs built to make government our God,” says Angle, who has called for privatizing Social Security and Medicare for younger workers. “What’s happening in this country is a violation of the First Commandment,” Angle told Trunews in the April interview, which is posted on the network’s website.”We have become a country entrenched in idolatry, and that idolatry is the dependency upon our government. We’re supposed to depend upon God for our protection and our provision and for our daily bread, not for our government,” she said. Reid’s campaign said in a statement Wednesday that Angle’s statements are “frightening.”Excerpt Read more at apnews.myway.com …

As we approach the anniversary August 6 of the employment of an atomic weapon against a wartime enemy, many will want to apologize for our first use without the knowledge of the bloodiness of the war or the consequences of not using it …
The news media covered the incredible brutality of the Japanese who had attacked us at Pearl Harbor without warning. The Bataan death march, a photo in Life Magazine of an Australian prisoner about to be beheaded and press reports and newsreels of the enormous casualties at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, did not leave Americans with a warm and fuzzy feeling about the Japanese.Wars are won by swift, decisive action. The comparison of WWI with its drawn out trench warfare and the German blitzkrieg in 1940 is an example.
Despite millions of deaths in WWI, Germans never got within 70 miles of Paris. In 1940 with surprise and overwhelming force, France fell in 38 days with minimal casualties on both sides.President Truman in 1945 was faced with the same realities of war. A ‘prairie fire’ sweeping the nation
American Thinker ^ | August 5, 2010 | Russ VaughnPosted on Thursday, August 05, 2010 2:14:13 PM by MtnClimber
I was inspired by a comment I heard on the tube in reference to the Missouri rejection of the ObamaCare mandates, where some politician referred to that overwhelming rejection of the over-reaching powers of a magisterial federal government as a prairie fire.
That man may very well have inadvertently given the definitive name to the so-far spotty, spontaneous and disorganized movement of rejection of the Obama Administration, the Pelosi/Reid Congress and their raid on the Constitution of the United States of America.
Respectfully borrowing from the lyrics of two of America’s musical icons, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, I do indeed believe that, “Something’s Burning.” There are small prairie fires springing up all over this country from coast to coast, Missouri being one of the two largest so far.
It is entirely appropriate that the first statewide challenge to Obama’s federal mandates should come from, where else, but the Show Me state.

Interviewing Nick Popaditch, the ‘Cigar Marine’

Nick Popaditch is an American hero who has spent his life in service to our country.
He first enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1986, serving with 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division. During Operation Desert Shield, he served as a tank commander before being honorably discharged in 1992. In 1996, he reenlisted with the Marine Corps, and once again served as a tank commander. From 1998 to 2002, he served as a drill instructor before returning to 1st Marine Division in 2002.
He rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and deployed to Iraq. The 1st Tank Battalion pulled down the statue of Saddam Hussein, and his face became known in April 2003, when an AP photographer took a photograph of Popaditch grinning, smoking a cigar, with the statue of falling in the background. He was serving in Fallujah as a tank commander when he was hit with a rocket propelled grenade in the head.
Miraculously, he survived, something he attributes to the actions of the Marines serving with him. Popaditch was blinded and temporarily deaf, he was treated in Fallujah and then medevaced to Germany. He lost his right eye, his sense of smell, and hearing in his right ear. His nose was also broken, and he had to undergo several surgeries to remove shrapnel from his head, eye, and face. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry, and the Purple Heart. He was medically retired as a Gunnery Sergeant.

National Guard Man Faces 16 Years In Jail For Videotaping Police Officer

Should Videotaping the Police Really Be a Crime?
Time Magazine
Thursday, August 5, 2010
Anthony Graber, a Maryland Air National Guard staff sergeant, faces up to 16 years in prison. His crime? He videotaped his March encounter with a state trooper who pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle. Then Graber put the video — which could put the officer in a bad light — up on YouTube.
It doesn’t sound like much. But Graber is not the only person being slapped down by the long arm of the law for the simple act of videotaping the police in a public place. Prosecutors across the U.S. claim the videotaping violates wiretap laws — a stretch, to put it mildly.
These days, it’s not hard to see why police are wary of being filmed. In 1991, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) beating of Rodney King was captured on video by a private citizen. It was shown repeatedly on television and caused a national uproar. As a result, four LAPD officers were put on trial, and when they were not convicted, riots broke out, leaving more than 50 people dead and thousands injured (two officers were later convicted on federal civil rights charges).

New documents point to Indonesian citizenship
Mother dropped Obama from U.S. passport when being American dangerous
Posted: August 04, 201010:57 pm EasternBy Jerome R. Corsi© 2010 WorldNetDaily
Ann Dunham with Barack Obama Jr.Documents released by the State Department in two separate Freedom of Information Act requests bolster evidence Barack Obama became a citizen of Indonesia when he moved to the Southeast Asian nation with his mother and stepfather in the late 1960s.
In a passport amendment submitted Aug. 13, 1968, Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, identified her son with an Indonesian surname and asked the State Department to drop him from her U.S. passport. The transaction could have been part of an effort by Dunham to obtain Indonesian citizenship for her son. It took place before the State Department began requiring all citizens traveling abroad, regardless of age, to obtain their own passport.
Several court cases challenging Obama’s presidential eligiblity have argued he gave up his U.S. citizenship in Indonesia and used an Indonesian passport to travel to Pakistan in the early 1980s. Indonesia does not allow dual citizenship. The amendment was submitted less than a year after Dunham joined her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, in Indonesia.
It requested “Barack Obama II Soebarkah” be removed from her U.S. passport, No. 777788.See the movie Obama does not want you to see: Own the DVD that probes this unprecedented presidential-eligibility mystery!Story continues below
A letter from Lolo Soetoro to immigration officials in Hawaii pleading for an extension of his student visa, because anti-American sentiments in Indonesia could endanger his family, offers a possible reason for seeking Indonesian citizenship for Obama.
Dems to keep Congress
vomit alertThe Hill ^ | 8/5/10 | BudowskyPosted on Thursday, August 05, 2010 10:59:03 AM by pabianice
I still believe Democrats will keep control of the Congress, for these reasons:
1. The publication of the book Decision Points by former President George W. Bush will have a bombshell impact in the closing hours of the campaign. The publication date is Nov. 9.
Here is what will happen:
The book will leak the week before the election. Probably the entire book. Certainly the most controversial revelations. The saturation media coverage will be intense. Karl Rove will be everywhere.
Voters will remember:
It was a Republican president who initiated the bailout. It was Republican economics, championed by a Republican Congress, that caused the recession and created the curse of devastating unemployment.
The bad memories will flow as details of the Bush book unfold in the days before the election.I am no apologist for the shortcomings of the Democratic Party, but analyzing major trends, the most likely outcome is that Democrats retain control of both houses of Congress.
Secession and Liberty
The presidential election of 2000 showed that America is now divided into two great political classes: the productive, taxpaying class and the parasitic, live-at-others’-expense class. The latter group includes millions of welfare bums, federal, state and local government bureaucrats and “contractors,” and their massive supporting propaganda apparatus in the universities, on television, and in print journalism. Now that the vast majority of what the central government does is unconstitutional, there is almost no restraint at all on the extent to which the latter class can use the coercive powers of the state to plunder the former class.
The federal system of government that was created by the founding fathers was designed explicitly to deter this outcome, but that system was overthrown in 1865. The founders understood that democracy would inevitably evolve into a system of legalized plunder unless the plundered were given numerous escape routes and constitutional protections such as the separation of powers, the Bill of Rights, election of senators by state legislators, the electoral college, no income taxation, most governmental functions performed at the state and local levels, and myriad other constitutional limitations on the powers of the central government.
The most important protection was the right of secession, which Peter Applebome of the New York Times suggests we should revive in light of the election returns. This was quite natural, for the United States were founded as the direct result of a war of secession waged against Great Britain. The very principle of the American Revolution was the right of secession against tyrannical government. The founders understood that even the threat of secession would hold would-be governmental tyrants in check…

Is Obama about to forgive billions in mortgage principal?
Hot Air ^ | 8/5/10 | Ed MorrisseyPosted on Thursday, August 05, 2010 9:39:02 AM by Daisyjane69
James Pethokoukis hears rumors of an August surprise coming from the White House, one that will attempt to win backs the hearts and minds of voters dismayed at the failing economic policies of the Obama administration.
With the government fully in control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Barack Obama may issue an order to forgive portions of underwater mortgages processed through the GSEs, where negative equity approaches $800 billion overall.
Some financial houses have begun quietly preparing for the possibility: Main Street may be about to get its own gigantic bailout. Rumors are running wild from Washington to Wall Street that the Obama administration is about to order government-controlled lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to forgive a portion of the mortgage debt of millions of Americans who owe more than what their homes are worth. An estimated 15 million U.S. mortgages – one in five – are underwater with negative equity of some $800 billion.
Recall that on Christmas Eve 2009, the Treasury Department waived a $400 billion limit on financial assistance to Fannie and Freddie, pledging unlimited help. The actual vehicle for the bailout could be the Bush-era Home Affordable Refinance Program, or HARP, a sister program to Obama’s loan modification effort. HARP was just extended through June 30, 2011. The move, if it happens, would be a stunning political and economic bombshell less than 100 days before a midterm election in which Democrats are currently expected to suffer massive, if not historic losses.
The key date to watch is August 17 when the Treasury Department holds a much-hyped meeting on the future of Fannie and Freddie. …Excerpt Read more at hotair.com …

For years I have admired Congressman Ron Paul’s principled stance on spending and the Constitution. That said, he really damaged himself when he blamed President Lincoln for the Civil War, saying, “Six hundred thousand Americans died in a senseless civil war… [President Abraham Lincoln] did this just to enhance and get rid of the original intent of the republic.”
This is historical revisionism of the worst order, and it must be addressed. For Congressman Paul’s benefit – and for his supporters who may not know – seven states illegally declared their “independence” from the United States before Lincoln was sworn in as President.
