It’s getting to be embarrassing to be a conservative

These days it’s getting increasingly embarrassing to publicly identify oneself as a conservative. It was bad enough when George Bush 43, the K Street Gang, and the neo-cons were running up spending, fighting an unnecessary war of choice in Iraq, incurring massive deficits, expanding entitlements, and all the rest of the nonsense I cataloged over the years in posts like Bush 43 has been a disaster for conservatives.
These days, however, the most prominent so-called conservatives are increasingly fit only to be cast for the next Dumb and Dumber sequel. They’re dumb and crazy.Conservative pundit David Kilnghoffer has a great op-ed in today’s LA Times that nicely captures what I’m on about:Once, the iconic figures on the political right were urbane visionaries and builders of institutions — like William F. Buckley Jr., Irving Kristol and Father Richard John Neuhaus, all dead now. Today, far more representative is potty-mouthed Internet entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart, whose news and opinion website, Breitbart.com, is read by millions. In his most recent triumph, Breitbart got a U.S. Department of Agriculture official pushed out of her job after he released a deceptively edited video clip of her supposedly endorsing racism against white people. What has become of conservatism? … With its descent to baiting blacks, Mexicans and Muslims, its accommodation of conspiracy theories and an increasing nastiness and vulgarity, the conservative movement has undergone a shift toward demagoguery and hucksterism. Once the talk was of “neocons” versus “paleocons.” Now we observe the rule of the crazy-cons. …Conservatism wasn’t just a policy agenda, a set of partisan gripes or a football team seeking victory on the electoral field. Above all, it was a satisfying, sophisticated critique of modern, materialist culture, pointing a way out and up from liberalism.Let’s tick off ten things that make this conservative embarrassed by the modern conservative movement:

Here is video of Sen. Jim DeMint during a Senate Floor speech against the nomination of Elena Kagan, where he he hammered Nancy Pelosi for her willful disregard of the her oath of office to the U.S. Constitution. DeMint cited Pelosi’s answer when asked where the U.S. Constitution gives her the right to mandate that people purchase Health Insurance. She responded, “You’ve got to be kidding.”DeMint said Pelosi does not see the Constitution as the document that limits what Government can do to the people.
Instead, she and Obama have created a “Yes We Can Congress” that does what it pleases, without any regard to what the Constitution says.Excerpt Read more at freedomslighthouse.net …

ABOUT THE WIND AND THE LION
By R.W. Gaines Gny Sgt USMC Ret.

I recently again viewed the film The Wind And The Lion, 1975, Sean Connery, Candice Bergen, and I noticed that although the story was set in the year 1904, the Marine Corps battle color shown was the one w/the scarlet background, not the battle color w/the blue background as would be correct for that time.
As you all know, the background color for the USMC battle color was changed from blue to scarlet in 1925, although it did not become completely effective till 1939. Also noticed the same error in another film, Shores Of Tripoli John Payne, Randolph Scott. in this case, the blue battle color vice the scarlet was shown on the occasion of the beginning of WW II and Pearl Harbor.
Decided to check into the events of the The Wind and The Lion plot to see whether or not the story line of this film had any basis in fact, and perhaps discover what else they had gotten wrong…
Here’s what I found.

The bandit chieftain, Raisouli, kidnapped a naturalized American citizen, Ion Perdicaris, in Morocco. President Roosevelt informed the Moroccan government that we wanted “Perdicaris alive or Raisouli dead” and landed Captain J.T. Myers’s Marine detachment from the cruiser USS Brooklyn ACR 3 at Tangier.
Shortly thereafter, Raisouli released Pedicaris.”Ref

Angle: Democrats want to ‘make government our God’LOS ANGELES AP – Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle sees her campaign as a battle to stop Democrats in Washington who want to expand entitlement programs and “make government our God.”
In an interview with a Christian radio network, Angle describes her effort to oust Majority Leader Harry Reid as a religious calling in “a war of ideology, it’s a war of thoughts and of faith.”Reid, President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have pushed “entitlement programs built to make government our God,” says Angle, who has called for privatizing Social Security and Medicare for younger workers. “What’s happening in this country is a violation of the First Commandment,” Angle told Trunews in the April interview, which is posted on the network’s website.”We have become a country entrenched in idolatry, and that idolatry is the dependency upon our government. We’re supposed to depend upon God for our protection and our provision and for our daily bread, not for our government,” she said. Reid’s campaign said in a statement Wednesday that Angle’s statements are “frightening.”Excerpt Read more at apnews.myway.com …

.King Plantagenet 1167 – 1216, known as John of EnglandSome of his attributes and accomplishments:Lack of prowess in battlePenchant for treacheryRuthlessnessHeavy taxation
The first income taxConfiscation of all church possessionsLecherous behaviorSigning of the Magna Carta under duress, which he tried to break by starting a warSummaryKing John’s reign has traditionally been characterised as one of the most disastrous in English history, earning him the nickname “Bad King John”: it began with military defeats – he lost Normandy to Philip Augustus of France in his first five years on the throne – and ended with England torn by civil war and himself on the verge of being forced out of power. In 1213, he made England a papal fief to resolve a conflict with the Catholic Church, and his rebellious barons forced him to seal Magna Carta in 1215, the act for which he is best remembered.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_England
