Veteran Director Ron Howard is scheduled to direct “Mena”, a film depicting the true story of pilot Barry Seal.

Born Adler Berriman Seal, the former U.S. Special Forces pilot was a gun runner and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel in the 1980s.

The tentative film title references Seal moving his smuggling operation from Baton Rouge, La. to Mena, Arkansas

Universal Pictures bid on the script, winning it for $1 million. Gary Spinelli is set to pen the screenplay. The film will be produced by Doug Davison.

Howard, who was born in Duncan, Okla.  is responsible for classic films such as, “Cocoon”, “Apollo 13”, and “A Beautiful Mind”.
