In a tweetstorm on Saturday morning, President Donald Trump alleged that the Obama administration wiretapped his residence and campaign in the final months of the election. These allegations have embroiled Capitol Hill and the media in recent days, and some form of an investigation will certainly follow.
Ever since Trump’s revelations, Democrats and liberal media elites have scrambled to deny, denounce, and discredit the idea that the Obama Administration spied on Trump’s campaign.
There’s just one little problem…
Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid admitted several times, both before and after the election, that some form of surveillance of the Trump campaign was ongoing, and that the intelligence community had told him this as fact.
In late October, just days before the election, Harry Reid sent a letter to FBI Director James Comey criticizing his decision to continue the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server. While Reid’s assertion that Director Comey violated federal law with this investigation dominated the headlines, a little-noticed passage in the letter is once again in the spotlight.
In late October, the time period at which the Obama administration sought a FISA warrant to monitor Trump, Reid wrote:
“In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisers, and the Russian Government… I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public.”
This statement makes it clear that Senator Reid, a high-ranking member of the Senate, was told of information gleaned from communications intercepted by the intelligence community, even when members of the intelligence community now categorically deny that the Obama administration ordered any form of wiretap operation.
There’s more, as the Washington Post wrote in October:
“Reid is saying that he has been told the FBI has evidence of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. And he’s not just saying this information came from mysterious and unnamed national security officials; he’s saying Comey himself has left him with this impression.”
In December, Harry Reid told the Huffington post that he had “no doubt” that “someone in the Trump campaign organization” was communicating with Russian operatives. He said that he was made aware of these relationships during “the last few months of the campaign.”
In the same interview, Reid cautioned members of the Electoral College based on “intelligence briefings he’s seen.”
What were these intelligence briefings? Did they contain material gleaned from some form of wiretap or surveillance operation?
Did Harry Reid know about a wiretap operation against Trump? His words, both before and after the election, make it seem like he did.
