Buddhism and Psychology
Buddhism and psychology overlap in theory and in practice. Since the beginning of the 20th century, four strands of interplay have evolved:
- descriptive phenomenology: scholarshave found in Buddhist teachings a detailed introspectivephenomenologicalpsychology (particularly in theAbhidhammawhich outlines various traits, emotions andpersonality types).
- psychotherapeutic meaning:humanisticpsychotherapists have found in Buddhism’snon-dualisticapproach andenlightenmentexperiences (such as in Zenkensho) the potential for transformation, healing and finding existential meaning. This connection was explained by a modification ofPiaget’s theory of cognitive developmentintroducing the process of initiation.
- clinical utility: some contemporary mental-health practitioners increasingly find ancient Buddhist practices (such as the development ofmindfulness) of empirically proven therapeutic value.
- popular psychology and spirituality: psychology has been popularized, and has become blended withspiritualityin some forms ofmodern spirituality
