Samuel Johnson declared that “men more frequently require to be reminded than informed.”
Perhaps Barry Goldwater had this injunction in mind in his famous nomination acceptance speech 50 years ago at the Republican National Convention
in San Francisco.
Like a liturgical litany, seven times in his speech Goldwater said either “I needn’t remind you” or “let me remind you,” but it was the final two reminders that sealed the speech as the most memorable convention oration since William Jennings Bryan denounced the “Cross of Gold” in 1896:

“Remarkably, they know they are ignorant, but their ignorance does not trouble them. On the contrary, when Jay’s questions expose it, they laugh, pleased with themselves, so they will do nothing to abate it.
Their ignorance is “cool,” which, where I come from, has always meant, “not so hot.” They are potential slaves, waiting for some dictator to corral them. They will still be giggling inanely about how, like, cool it is, man, as they are put aboard the cattle cars.”

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI — An Ottawa County diversity group is claiming that a Grand Haven area man’s political statement — a lawn chair hangingfrom a tree — is racially insensitive and should be taken down.
Leaders of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance have scheduled a “community conversation” public meeting next Thursday at the Grand Haven Community Center to discuss the issue.
The lawn chair is suspended by a rope from a tree along Comstock Street near Peach Plain Elementary School and, according to the homeowner, is simply a take-off on Clint Eastwood‘s much-ballyhooed “empty chair rant” speech at the Republican National Convention where Eastwood was pretending to talk to President Barack Obama.
The Clint Eastwood on gay marriage episode of Ellen DeGeneres‘ talk-show showed “Dirty Harry” again in the “raw.” The actor-director shared his views on same-sex-marriage and his role with the Libertarian Party. In the wake of the RNC, viewers got an even closer glimpse at the Hollywood legend.

further in the upcoming issue of Esquire, saying that despite his 2008 campaign promises, Obama is “doing anything he possibly can to keep power. There’s no way he’s going to give it up.”
At the RNC in August, Eastwood, a five-time Academy Award winner, criticized the president largely about the economy and the estimated 23 million Americans out of work, and also stressed that the American people “own this country,” not the politicians, the “politicians are employees of ours.”
